It's understandable that, amid a flurry of pitch meetings and rejections, founders might find themselves mystified about what venture capital investors want. However, according to Bessemer Venture Partners operating partner Jeff Epstein, it's actually very simple: They want to see a business that has the potential to grow exponentially, some evidence of traction, and a concrete plan for further de-risking the enterprise. As you de-risk the enterprise, he explains, you create opportunities for larger fundraising rounds.
A self-professed “accidental venture capitalist” and entrepreneur with a background in engineering and solar cells, Homan Yuen is helping to make dreams come true for founders in Silicon Valley and beyond. CEOs in the deep tech space are deeply passionate about what they are building. But these brilliant technical minds tend to be less passionate about sales and marketing. So, how can a VC with a background in branding inspire his founders to invest in marketing material that reflects the power and beauty of what they're building technically? Greg Castle is the Founder and Managing Director of Anorak Ventures, a fund dedicated to early-stage, disruptive technologies like virtual reality, robotics, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, computer vision and internet of things. Greg believes that the next decade will be defined by the emerging technology of today, and he is passionate about investing in teams with the right mix of intellect, experience and integrity to succeed. Prior to Anorak, Greg worked in corporate marketing and served as the cofounder of Pure Food, a UK startup of fast casual restaurants. Today, Greg joins us to share his experience as a seed investor in Oculus, explaining how the experience inspired him to become a VC. He describes his value-add for the companies he works with in the realm of sales and marketing and discusses the importance branding that reflects the work you've put in on the technical side. Listen in to find out how Anorak has evolved since its inception in 2016 and learn why Greg is looking for founders who understand the ‘illogical' nature of running a venture-backed business. On this inaugural OG Crypto Series episode, I, Chris Groshong sit down with Managing Partner at Stillmark Capital, Alyse Killeen to discuss what it takes to have longevity in the Crypto and Blockchain industry. This is a new series we're launching called The "Crypto OG Series" where I tap into my rolodex of VIPs, movers and shakers from the Blockchain space that have been around the industry and share their knowledge, perspective and philosophies. In this one, we talk about Venture Capital in Crypto and Alyse’s philosophical approach to investing through Stillmark Capital. Are there any differences between LA and Silicon Valley approaches to investing? And what does she look for in founders and does emotional intelligence play a factor? Hear a story about the history of entrepreneurship in her family dating back several generations. Alyse and I first met at an afterparty in June of 2014 as part of a conference (no longer in existence) called Coin Congress. She said some very motivating words to me that helped me push through tough times. I point this out because this industry is small compared to other Technology categories. You never know how the words you speak will be received or the importance someone may give to them. The people you affect may become allies, liaisons or partners in the future. Be positive, genuine and spread goodwill. You will be rewarded many times over. About Alyse Killeen Founding Partner StillMark Co. Founder and Executive Director of City Fellows Consortium and Women in Venture. Mentor at Silicon Valley’s Plug and Play Tech Center and Alchemist Accelerator, and to NYFTL by the Partnership Fund for NYC and Springboard Enterprises. Fintech Fellow at Singapore University of Social Sciences in Singapore. Company Advisor contributing on issues of Strategy, Finance, Org and Ops, and more. First learned about company building alongside a successful entrepreneurial grandfather, catalyzing an affinity for and commitment to entrepreneurs. Rooting for Underdogs and Outsiders.

Show Highlights Terri answers Jacqueline’s questions about pitch events and demo days Terri talks about the Ada program in Berlin to encourage more women to be founders and entrepreneurs where she will be a mentor in their first cohort. Terri talks about the SwissNex event last year where she met Anne Cocquyt of The Guild where she had to ask to be on the all-male panel and the facilitator said they would be declaring the king of the evening. Terri had to shout out “or queen.” The winner ended up being a female founder. Terri comments on how she dislikes pitch events where winners are declared but there’s no actual financial reward. Terri attends events to learn about what is going on, the latest technology, and potentially find new startups to invest in. She also looks for founders/startups to help even if she doesn’t invest in the startups. Terri clarifies her understanding of an evergreen fund for her own investing. How long does it take a company to exit? Typically, 7-10 years. But it depends on the business and the exit strategy (IPO, acquisition). What is an accredited investor? Terri talks about the discussions around investing in startups and the SEC requirements and that the net worth and income requirements limit who can invest regardless of knowledge and experience. Terri shares what she is listening for at the various pitch events. It depends on which hat she is wearing. In addition to the standard pitch elements, she is looking for ability to communicate. Is Terri looking for leadership style in the pitches? Indirectly, yes. The point of the pitch is to pique interest for follow up conversations. In early stage startups, you are generally investing in the team. Terri is excited about one of her investments, Zum, that just announced their $19M Series B raise. Zum is on demand and scheduled rides for kids ages 5-15. They have a female co-founder/CEO. At what point do big VCs invest in startups? What are the various rounds? Seed, Series A, Series B, etc. Terri talks about the current landscape with more money coming into startups earlier and VCs investing earlier in the startups. Geography impacts this as well. Terri talks about when she invests in convertible notes versus priced rounds. Terri is excited about the first deal, Sendaride, she is syndicating on AngelList. (This is not a solicitation for funds). Terri is sharing out to folks in her network who she knows are accredited investors to get them onto the AngelList platform. Terri found getting onto the platform a bit confusing without a specific deal to invest in. Terri and Jacqueline were saved by the bell when Terri’s neighbor, Sean, came over with a cocktail to discuss cryptocurrency, blockchain and ICO’s. Many consumer-facing startups like Tinder and Snapchat soak up all the publicity and media attention while many of the Industrial startups that are truly transforming our world are deemed not "sexy" and fall under the radar. As a result, many of these startups also do not receive adequate support from corporate investors and venture capital firms that are critical to growing their businesses. In the eighth installment of the "Ventures in Industrial IoT series" brought to you by GE Ventures, we are excited to have with us Ravi Belani, Managing Partner of Alchemist Accelerator who will be sharing with us about how his accelerator works with the companies in their portfolio and with corporates to develop the competence of these "unsexy" startups through collaboration. Can you raise venture capital too easily? Nagarjun "Nag" Palavalli, my guest on this episode, thinks you can. Nag's journey from dropping out of college in India to the fast paced start-up culture at the Alchemist Accelerator in Silicon Valley illustrates the pitfalls of quick success. Nag also discusses why the romantic notion of the lone entrepreneur building a start-up can actually kill a great idea. And Nag identifies the one person he wishes he'd talked to before launching. My Guest Nag Palavalli is that guy in your dorm that not only talks about dropping out and starting a tech company, but actually goes through with it. As a student Nag was frustrated that his school lacked a decent learning management platform. So he quit and started Eduora. After doing initial development work in his hometown of Bangalore, India, Nag moved to Silicon Valley to participate in the Alchemist Accelerator. Nag shares his experiences launching on a shoe string and then swimming in deep end of the venture capital pool. The Take Home Lessons Raising capital quickly and easily isn’t necessarily the best thing for a start-up. Nag believes pretty strongly that he would have benefited from the objective feedback off experienced investors. Getting critiques from investors with very broad experience would have helped Nag avoid a number of mistakes. Talk to customers before you design a product. The urge to build something based on your assumptions must be suppressed. Nag was selling to large universities without understanding how they made decisions about purchasing. Never underestimate how complicated sales is when there’s a group decision involved. “Be a frolicking deer.” Don’t hunt the venture capitalists, make them hunt you. The solo entrepreneur is a myth. “When you’re on your own your mind will let you agree with whatever you want to agree to.” Resources & Links Nag's email: me AT nagarjun DOT co Nag's Blog: Nagarjun.co Twitter - @Palavalli Linkedin Facebook Alchemist Accelerator Subscribe With Your Favorite App Share With Entrepreneurial Colleagues & Friends Connect With Me Why a Venture Capital Podcast About Failure? From early childhood you've always heard the saying “Learn from your mistakes.” In the venture capital industry you frequently hear “Fail fast” to learn and get to the right idea. Great advice. So, for this venture capital podcast I interview venture capital backed entrepreneurs about what they learned when their start-up didn't go as planned. I hope you can learn from their valuable experience. The post Not So Fast! Nag Palavalli on the Perils of Easy Capital Raising appeared first on Venture Capital Coroner's Report.
