Steve Rhode, the old Get Out of Debt Guy, and Damon Day, the new Get Out of Debt Guy, dig into one of the biggest money mysteries out there: why do so many people with decent incomes still feel completely broke? This episode starts with the honest truth that debt problems can feel like financial Groundhog Day. The details change, but the panic, pressure, and confusion are often the same. Steve and Damon talk about why people in debt crisis can get pushed into quick decisions, how debt relief companies and financial “solutions” may have their own agenda, and why it is so hard to know who to trust when you are scared and trying to survive. They also get into the reality of rising costs, housing, food, transportation, kids' activities, lifestyle expectations, budgeting, emergency savings, credit cards, debt settlement, bankruptcy, and the simple but painful rule of holes: when you are in one, stop digging. The big takeaway is this: getting out of debt is not just about cutting expenses. It is about creating breathing room, understanding your real numbers, making better decisions, and finding a way to get on the asset train before it leaves the station. You can find more debt help, articles, and resources at GetOutOfDebt.orgDamon Day offers free consultations and can be reached at DamonDay.com

Good Money: A Framework for Human Flourishing Through Your Finances What if the way you relate to money is quietly undermining everything you're working toward? Host Justin Forman sits down with investor, author, and Harvard Business Review contributor John Coleman for a candid conversation about money, meaning, and what it actually means to flourish. Drawing on 15 years of writing on purpose and leadership — and a front-row seat to both great wealth creation and its casualties — John has written Good Money, a framework for entrepreneurs who want their finances to serve their lives, not consume them. Together they unpack the psychology of money, the danger of the hedonic treadmill, and why setting a financial finish line isn't giving up — it's the turbocharge entrepreneurs didn't know they needed. John connects rigorous mainstream research with ancient wisdom, showing that what Scripture has always said about money is now being confirmed by Harvard, Baylor, and Gallup. Key Topics: Why only 17% of Americans find meaning and purpose at work — and what entrepreneurs can do about it The six areas of money every entrepreneur must master: earning, spending, giving, investing, and saving Hedonic adaptation: the psychological trap keeping you on a financial treadmill that never ends What a financial finish line actually is — and why setting one isn't quitting, it's liberating The research-backed case for generosity: reductions in mortality, dementia, heart attack, and stroke Why wealthy societies score lower on human flourishing — and what that means for faith-driven entrepreneurs Building accountability communities around money: spouses, advisors, kids, and close friends Notable Quotes: “The Bible mentions money over 2,300 times. It never says money is evil, but it says the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” — John Coleman “I believe firmly there is no success without significance.” — John Coleman “100% of the time is easier than 98% of the time.” — Clayton Christensen, as quoted by John Coleman About John Coleman: John Coleman is an investor at Sovereign's Capital, a longtime Harvard Business Review contributor, and author of Good Money. A two-time class president (high school and college), former speech team competitor, and management consultant, John has spent 15 years writing about purpose, meaning, and human flourishing in the workplace. His work bridges rigorous academic research with the ancient wisdom of Christian tradition.

Here at MinistryWatch, I read a lot of books about money, stewardship, philanthropy, and related topics. That's probably not a surprise. After all, that's what we do here. These topics are our “beat.” But I don't often run across a book like John Coleman's new book Good Money: Six Steps to Building a Financial Life with Purpose. I can honestly say that this is the best book I've read on this topic in a very long time. That's why I'm excited to have John on the program today. What makes this book different is that it starts by talking about such ideas as purpose, calling, happiness, and flourishing – both individual flourishing and human flourishing generally. How can money, and our approach to money, contribute to what God is doing in the world? Along the way, John takes a hard look at work and retirement. Why do we work, and is retirement even a biblical category? We'll discuss these questions and more in today's podcast. John Coleman is an investor, writer, and speaker. He is the co-CEO of Sovereign's Capital, which invests in public equities, private equity, and venture capital. He has prior experience at McKinsey & Company, Invesco, and Bridgewater Associates. As I mentioned in today's program, we are offering John's book Good Money as our thank you gift for the month of April. Seven years ago I did something people thought was crazy. I walked away from a residual income in the life insurance business — a career I had spent years building — because I had a book to write, a message to share, and a compliance department that wouldn't let me be who I was meant to be. I had no plan. No guarantee. Just a belief that what I knew was worth something. In this episode I share what that leap taught me about the most powerful business model available to anyone today — turning your knowledge, your story, and your experience into real income. Good income. Good Money. If you've ever told yourself "nobody would pay me for what I know" — this episode is for you.

You say, here I am, send me — and then you wait and see where he's gonna send you." — Matt Monson About the Guests: Matt Monson leads Public Equities Investing at Sovereign's Capital, bringing deep analytical rigor to faith-aligned portfolio construction across small, mid, and large cap markets.
