Cheers to Episode 30! Like most people in the social media world, Sara, Shona, and Chrissy discuss gratitude surrounding the holidays…. but with a twist. We tried our best to stay away from the “sappy gratitude” that many people talk about (which is important) and instead we focused on how gratitude can help us grow and learn. Excited to finally bring out this conversation I had a few months ago with Jeffrey Scott Gould. You may already know the name if you've seen his documentary Quiet Please… The film did a lot to raise awareness for misophonia and help people with misophonia understand what they're feeling and most importantly that they're not alone. In this conversation we talk about why Jeffrey made the documentary, how he decided what to put in the film, the reactions for misophones, dealing with haters, infighting in the misophonia community, and of course his own life story, his coping tips, and what he's been up to since the film. This was every bit as awesome as I was hoping and actually even exceeded that. She has become extremely passionate about the cause of misophonia awareness, to the point where she is working on a powerful book about it.Sophie is Mary's 87 years old mother-in-law, and has misophonia. So we get her perspective on misophonia going back obviously many, many decades right up to today. Sophie has a daughter who also has misophonia. So lots of complex perspectives here and some we've never discussed before, like what's it like to date a man in his 90s who eats with dentures.Support the podcast on Patreon!Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. This week I bring my conversation with Liz, yet another Canadian living up in Toronto. We walk about being a misanthrope, someone who doesn't necessarily like a lot of humans, we talk about post partum depression, other comorbidities, raising a lively son during a pandemic, as well as dialectical behavior therapy.Links:Dialectical behavior therapy Support the podcast on Patreon!Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. This week I'm talking to Elektra, a clothing designer and mother, recently moved to LA, although at the time of this interview she was living in Philadelphia. She talks about being a child of divorced parents, with one of them being particularly dismissive of her misophonia, putting off having her own child for a while due to misophonia, working on anger, eating disorders, using mimicking, and the importance of being taken seriously.I encourage everyone to check out the online shop of her brand Unknown Apparel at unknownapparelshop.com. I am a big advocate for supporting other misophones in their businesses and creative projects. We discuss how Megan landed at Heidi Riggs' Vocal Studio, our plans for 2022, and our NEW PODCAST partnership, Real Music Talk with The Professor & The Diva! We're here to hype Musicians, Educators, Teaching Artists, Performers, and Young Artists, and discuss what REAL professional opportunities await musicians after college. Let's leave our collective limiting beliefs about “starving artists” in the 20th century, shall we? Thanks for listening!
It's the annual family episode! Last year around this time I had two episodes back to back of a mother and a daughter who both have misophonia. I decided to continue the family theme every year around the holidays and I am happy to bring this incredible episode featuring the Denburg family. It started as an interview with Alexandra, but then her parents were interested in talking about their experience with having a child with misophonia. Alexandra grew up in North Jersey, had a pretty typical misophonia onset story, was actually bullied from an early age up even through college, and now has a successful, award-winning interior design firm. When she found out the misophonia had a name it was a revelation, as it was to her parents who just became even more supportive to the point of wanting to help others who are dealing with miso. This is a conversation I've been thinking about lot since I recorded it. Nick lives with his wife and family, and works as a software developer, but his sound and sensory sensitivities have led to some really intense reactions and situations. There's a lot here that's unlike anything you've probably heard about misophonia but there's a lot to relate to. We talk about his sound sensitivities, visuals, movement, spatial, different therapies, CBT, medication, trauma, issues his dad had, and a lot more. If you're like me your jaw will drop in some places, tear up in others, and laugh with Nick in yet others.Support the podcast on Patreon!Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. Bryan is in software consulting and is a dad with a family in Colorado. This was a special conversation for me, all my interviews are special because we all have this thing in common, but this was kind of crazy because our life situations are even more similar. We really get into some of my favorite topics like, the distance that builds up between family members when you're growing up with Misophonia. If there's just one thing that comes out of all these conversations is that this thing hurts and that hurt sticks a lot longer than people realize. Lots of laughs along the way to go with the raw stuff so enjoy this one! Julia is a senior in high school and as we spoke back when this 2021 school year began, it was interesting getting her thoughts on the past 18 months. Julia is also very into advocacy for Misophonia and runs the misophonoiamindfulness Instagram account. We talk about art therapy and her hopes to pursue neuroscience after she graduates. It's really promising to see young people with Misophonia pursue their educations and careers with Misophonia in mind as something they want to work on.Support the podcast on Patreon!Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. It's the second anniversary of this podcast! Few people have had as big of an impact on Misophonia awareness as Dr. Jennifer Brout. She is a psychologist and misophonia sufferer, and parent of a misophonia sufferer, who has been pushing very hard for misophonia awareness and research since the 90s. She co-founded the Duke Misophonia Research center, and is co-director of Misophonia Education and the International Misophonia Research Network. She has written a number articles about misophonia over the years and books, including her latest: Regulate, Reason, Reassure: A Parent's Guide to Understanding and Managing Misophonia. Jennifer is especially interested in understanding and helping children and families with misophonia. This week it's back to a UK episode, with Rachael. We talk a lot about family, friends and relationships, and work, common themes, as well as traumatic experiences growing up, which honestly is also a common theme in my conversations. And of course we talk about shifting situations with work before COVID, during COVID and post-COVID.Support via Patreon!Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. This week I have Michael, from down in New Zealand, where he lives in a place with I think about 7 other people. This one's really interesting because though Michael definitely deals with misophonia regularly with all the usual tools, he also tries to consciously not run away immediately from the trigger. Sort of like facing it head on as much as possible to maybe build some resistance. It reminds me of the debate that goes on around exposure therapy, and here we hear Michael's take.Download the official Misophonia Podcast app!For iOS and Android Podcast episodes, background sounds, a trigger journal, a panic button, and tons of resources on all things miso. This week I have another conversation with a Canadian. Tia is a single mother of two boys. She has misophonia, and one of her sons has it too. Between Tia's own misophonia, PTSD and the brother who sometimes triggering the other boy on purpose, it can be quite a lively scene at home. We get into how Tia deal's with her misophonia, how it informs how she tries to help her son, especially in the context of other parallel issues. Welcome to an exciting season 5! Mary-Rachel is a casting director and producer in LA who had a miso-related breakdown following an MRI a few months ago. This conversation is a hilarious rollercoaster talking about miso and much more... growing up with miso in a well-known British family, being a single parent, life in LA, explaining it to parents, children, co-workers, and the often profanity-infused outbursts that come with the territory. This is a long one but worth it as I start the new season with a bang.
