Interpreten: Liya Petrova, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Duncan Ward, Alexandre KantorowLabel: MirareEAN: 3760127226918Virtuose Geigenliteratur hat es diese Woche wieder zu besonderen Ehren auf radio klassik Stephansdom gebracht. Die neue CD Momentum 2 von Liya Petrova hat Michael Gmasz überzeugt! Was er daran so herausragend findet? Lesen Sie selbst! Please join me in welcoming my friends, Dr. Mary Reid Gaudio and Gino Gaudio, filmmakers and founders of the Tony Gaudio Foundation, who joined us today to discuss the magnificent film they will soon debut about Oscar-winning cinematographer, Gaetano Gaudio, the first Italian-born filmmaker from Italy to win an Academy Award. And his story is fascinating. In 1906, Gaetano “Tony” Gaudio, a young man from Calabria, set out for the American Dream, arriving in the United States with a passion for cinematography, which was just developing in the motion picture industry. His family ran a successful photography studio in Cosenza, Italy, so making pictures was in his DNA. Tony eventually made his way from New York to Hollywood, where he quickly grew to be one of the most prized cinematographers in the industry, working with Hollywood's elite such as Betty Davis, Errol Flynn, and dozens of others. He won an Academy Award for his work in 1937 for Anthony Adverse. His statuette is missing, just like his story was for decades, until Gino, Mary, and other descendants of the Gaudio family brought his story to life in this documentary, with the hope of also finding his prized Oscar. Please join my interview with Gino and Mary on all video and audio platforms of #littleItalyPodcast, #DeborahKobyltLIVE and the #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here.

EPISODE 16 - “Beginner's Luck” - 01/01/2024 To win an Oscar sometimes takes decades of hard work and dedication to your craft — just ask PAUL NEWMAN, GERALDINE PAGE, and JESSICA TANDY. In fact, when Newman finally won the Oscar in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” after being nominated six times previously, he didn't even bother to show up to the ceremony. “It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years,” he told the Associated Press. “Finally, she relents and you say, ‘I'm terribly sorry. I'm tired.'” However, there is a small group of actors who didn't have to chase that beautiful Oscar for 80 years. They won for their very first film. This week we take a look at this rarified group. [ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1934 and the nominees are: 1) Katharine Hepburn - Morning Glory 2) Diana Wynard - Cavalcade 3) May Robson - Lady for a Day - In 1934 Katharine Hepburn won her first of four Oscars playing Eva Lovelace, an aspiring actress who faces various career setbacks but ultimately makes it in show business. At this time in history there were only 3 nominees per category and there were was no category for supporting actor/actress. That did not happen until 1937 when Walter Brennan won for Come and Get It and Gale Sondergaard won for Anthony Adverse for supporting actor and actress (respectively). Diana Wynard and May Robson each give fantastic performances and frankly with 3 nominees it makes the Oscar race much more competitive. Frankly I think you could make an argument for any of these performances to win. I don't think there was a clear front runner. Have you seen these films? If so who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Dan Dillabough as they discuss.

We are missing Phil's episode this week, so I added Dennis Day's first show!

Never before have our hosts said, “But whatever,” as many times as in this episode (please do not turn this into a drinking game— you have been warned). Despite SToT favorite Frederic March giving it his all as the titular character, Anthony Adverse is a confusing and confused muddle devoid of character development and made worse by a middle third fraught with all kinds of racism. But it does have the distinction of being the lowest rated Best Picture nominee on Rotten Tomatoes, so at least it has that going for it.
