Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. MICHELLE BIRSKY AND KEVIN HENTHORN Most recently known for scoring The Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, The Lesbian Bar Project (documentary series, Roku) and Mother/Android (feature film, Hulu), Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn are a married, composing duo based in Los Angeles. Their music is contemporary and emotional, often incorporating found sounds and vocals with a strong electro-acoustic pull. With years spent in the New York indie music scene, Michelle and Kevin bring a unique perspective to composition, drawing inspiration from composers like Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Mica Levi. Michelle, a vocalist, producer, and electronic musician, and Kevin, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, bridge their talents into a cohesive, well-rounded entity that creates emotionally-driven, electro-acoustic music. The two have always had a strong interest in film scoring, but they came to it from different backgrounds. Michelle graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in music. Kevin graduated from the Film Conservatory at Purchase College. Michelle and Kevin met in Brooklyn in 2014 and for the majority of their 20's they pursued their own musical projects: Michelle, a synth-pop artist project called Birch, and Kevin, a folk-rock project called Cape Francis. During that time, Michelle also focused on film composing, writing for sync and working under esteemed composer Elliot Goldenthal. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the pair decided to take the leap and move from NY to LA to focus on film composing, and soon were brought on to score Mother/Android, which premiered on Hulu in December, 2021. Together, through their music, Michelle and Kevin seek to help tell stories that broaden minds, and find truth and beauty in human life. Their latest project is Terminator Zero, the anime series, and latest in the Terminator franchise, which is coming soon to Netflix. This week, Henry Bruce-Jones joins us to run down the best music of 2024 so far. With the caveat that we didn't think it was worth revisiting the albums we've already discussed (and Brat summer's over anyway, babes), we start with the gaseous moods of Naemi, Bianca Scout and Chanel Beads. Are we in the midst of a brave new wave of shoegaze, or has the NTS early morning schedule pumped one too many Cocteau Twins songs into the water supply? We compare and contrast Erika de Casier and Clara La San's throwback R&B styles, and dive into some of the year's most interesting hip-hop records with both feet: They Hate Change, Jawnino, and Cooper B. Handy & Surf Gang.In club corner we celebrate recent releases by Facta, Parris, Emma dj, Verraco, Less-O, Jabes, SOPHIE and Actress (his best album in years?). We get into the various sides of Mica Levi and Henry goes deep on recent efforts by Nudo, Hafeez and NMNL.Finally, we close on some of our most bonkers Bandcamp discoveries of the year. Unfamiliar with Lust$ickPuppy, FIN and Phil Geraldi? No matter – these are the sort of discoveries that, in Chal's words, are a reminder that we love music. Jaded insiders? Us? Back from our break, this week we kick off our yearly Oscar's series with The Zone of Interest! Directed by Jonathan Glazer and loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name written by Martin Amis, this film follows Rudolf Höss, a German Nazi commandant who dreams of building a life right next to the Auschwitz concentration camp. With masterful performances by Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller and a truly haunting soundscape crafted by Johnnie Burn and Mica Levi, this film is truly unique. It was awarded the Grand Prix at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for 3 Golden Globes Awards, 9 BAFTAs, and 5 Academy Awards.... One of the most enduring exponents of weird and wonderful music, Tirzah has released a string of acclaimed albums, and works in close collaboration with other musicians, namely school friend Mica Levi. In this episode Flo and Tirzah are planting onion seeds and broad beans into seed trays to be grown inside, until they're ready to be planted out on the allotment. Whilst they set about this task they discuss the delicate business of karaoke, the musical impact of exiting Jehovah's Witnesses, motherhood, and the art of collaboration. In this episode of INSIGHTS, I have the utter pleasure of sitting down with one of the most extraordinary and well-respected percussionists and composers of our era. Valentina Magaletti's singular hypnotic rhythms are the driving force behind a staggering amount of musical projects, including Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, Tomaga and, most recently, V/Z and CZN. She has also worked with the likes of Lafawndah, upsammy, Mica Levi, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and Nicolas Jaar, as well as stalwarts of the experimental underground scene like Gnod's Marlene Ribeiro and Wire's Graham Lewis, even participating in The Can Project at London's Barbican Centre in 2017.Over the course of this interview, Valentina discusses using the drums as a vehicle for self-expression, the importance of channeling varied conversations via different musical projects, her musical influences ranging from Velvet Underground and Art Blakey to J Dilla and Sonia Pottinger, writing and performing with Vanishing Twin, Moin, Holy Tongue, V/Z, CZN and what the future has in store for each project. To finish, Valentina discuss her and her partner's new label and micro-publisher Permanent Draft and their forthcoming book documenting over two thousand female, trans and non-binary artists in experimental music, pursuing a career as a full time musician and some current favourite Bandcamp picks!Clips of 'Habadash' by V/Z featuring Cathy Lucas and 'Born To Snap' by CZN are used at the beginning and end of this podcast.SUPPORT VALENTINA MAGALETTI:Buy Music Club: https://www.buymusic.club/list/awakeallhours-insights-024-valentina-magaletti-Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/valentina_magaletti/

Phil Selway, Hannah Peel, Valentina Magaletti, and Errollyn Wallen discuss how to progress from a blank page to a room full of musicians, navigating barriers to development, and balancing the various demands of being a musician. Phil Selway grew up in Oxfordshire and met his Radiohead bandmates at school. They formed the band in 1985 and released their debut album Pablo Honey in 1993. They've released nine studio albums to date. Phil's debut solo album, Familial, came out in 2010, and he recently released his third solo album Strange Dance. Hannah Peel is a Mercury Prize and Emmy-nominated composer, musician, artist and broadcaster. Her music is primarily electronic and often includes classical scoring and sound design, with references to the links between science, nature and music. As well as solo releases, she has also composed soundtracks and collaborated with artists such as Paul Weller, John Foxx and Phil Selway. Valentina Magaletti is a drummer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, with an inventive approach to drums and percussion. She moves effortlessly between the seemingly disparate worlds of alternative and mainstream music. She's played with artists such as Jandek, Mica Levi, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and Nicolas Jaar. Errollyn Wallen is a multi award-winning Belize-born British composer and performer. Her output includes 22 operas and a large catalogue of orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. She composed for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games and for the climate change conference COP26. In 2020, she was awarded a CBE for services to music.

In this episode we invite Emmy award-winning screenwriter David Quantick to relive his days as a budding pop scribe on the NME – and to share his memories of Paul Weller, Lloyd Cole & the ignominious Morrissey. As someone who's written with Chris Morris, Armando Iannucci and Harrys Hill & Enfield, David is predictably hilarious about '80s pop – as well as about Simon Cowell & many other things. He also offers his tuppenceworth on the week's featured act Teenage Fanclub, and on our 1998 Marianne Faithfull audio interview, clips from which we hear and discuss in this episode.Mark then talks us through new library pieces about John Lennon's dad, Led Zeppelin and Earth, Wind & Fire; Barney cites Mat Snow's 2009 interview with Mike Oldfield, triggering a Quantick memory of theTubular Bells dude being quizzed by the late Steven Wells; and finally Jasper wraps up the episode with reflections on pieces about the 2001 BRIT Awards, soundtrack composer Mica Levi & jazz titan Kamasi Washington. Many thanks to special guest David Quantick.
