Interpreten: Liya Petrova, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Duncan Ward, Alexandre KantorowLabel: MirareEAN: 3760127226918Virtuose Geigenliteratur hat es diese Woche wieder zu besonderen Ehren auf radio klassik Stephansdom gebracht. Die neue CD Momentum 2 von Liya Petrova hat Michael Gmasz überzeugt! Was er daran so herausragend findet? Lesen Sie selbst!

SynopsisOn today's date in 1927, a landmark film title The Jazz Singer received its premiere showing at the Warner Theater in New York. The Jazz Singer starred Al Jolson and is usually credited with being the first “talkie”—the first motion picture to successfully incorporate prerecorded music and spoken dialogue. Both the music and dialogue were recorded using the Vitaphone process, essentially a set of disc recordings synchronized for playback with the film's projector. The previous year, the New York Philharmonic had participated in the first Vitaphone projects, recording Wagner's Tannhauser overture as the first-ever “music video,” and performing the soundtrack for an otherwise silent drama titled Don Juan, starring John Barrymore.Within a decade, Hollywood orchestras would be recording the classic film scores of European émigré composers like Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, and within two decades American composers like Aaron Copland and Bernard Herrmann would be writing their memorable film scores as well. But back in 1927, all of that was well in the future, and, as one of Al Jolson's lines in The Jazz Singer so prophetically put it, “You ain't heard nothin' yet.”Music Played in Today's ProgramFelix Arndt (1889 – 1918) An Operatic Nightmare (Desecration Rag No. 2) - Paragon Ragtime Orchestra; Rick Benjamin, cond. Noah Hynick of Minneapolis works at an escape room. He recommends a new play at Bryant Lake Bowl titled “The Assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand.” The play was written by Minnesota stand-up comic Joey Hamburger and is produced by Jackdonkey Productions. “It's all about the events leading up to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand,” Hynick explains. “It's sort of a tragic comedy and follows some real things that happen as well as some not quite true things.”  “Lots of places are still feeling the effects of COVID and everything. And now having new theaters come out, I think it's a really good chance to support smaller theaters and new art,” Hynick said. The show runs June 14-17, with an additional performance June 22. Amy Garretson of Rochester is the education and community outreach coordinator with the Rochester Art Center. She's excited that a new art house movie theater has opened in the Cooke Park neighborhood of Rochester, Pop's Art Theater. “The type of films they're showing are either films that are shown before the wider release at the big theaters, or they're just independent cinema that you're really just not going to see screened anywhere else in southeast Minnesota,” Garretson said. “After a long drought, there's finally a place where you can go to see interesting, innovative independent cinema here in Rochester.” Pop's Art Theater's screenings currently include “Dalíland,” a 2022 film about Salvador Dalí starring Ben Kingsley, and two classics of Hong Kong action cinema, “Police Story 2” with Jackie Chan and 1972's “Fist of Fury” with Bruce Lee. St. Paul's Christine Sweet is a former classical music broadcaster with Classical MPR and a current member of the Twin Cities theater community. “Ladyslipper Ensemble is one of my favorite local chamber music ensembles,” she says. “And that's because every time I've been to a Ladyslipper concert, I hear something wonderful that I've never heard before — whether it's brand new or just new to me.” She explains that Ladyslipper is “a group of four instrumentalists plus mezzo-soprano Sahar Hassan, who is its director. They typically don't perform as a quintet but in combinations of those instruments, or instruments and voice and sometimes they also have guest performers.” The next Ladyslipper performance will include music of Gabriel Fauré and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, as well as a premiere of a new piece by Minnesota composer Carol Barnett. The event will take place June 12 at MetroNOME Brewery in St. Paul.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, Nathan, Richard, Todd and Adrian Phoon leave the peasants of Worksop to their mud-eating and get together to ask themselves the questions Is the Doctor as big a hero as Robin Hood? and Is Robin Hood even real?, only to come up with some very surprising answers. It's Robot of Sherwood. Notes and links There have been any number of film versions of Robin Hood, which is part of the point, but Richard is mostly reminded of the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn as Robin, directed by Michael Curtiz, with an Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Errol Flynn didn't go to Scots College in Sydney, Nathan: it was Sydney Church of England Grammar School, commonly known as Shore. He claimed to have been expelled from Shore for having sex with one of the ladies who worked in the laundry. Star Trek: The Next Generation did its fantasy Robin Hood episode in its triumphant fourth season. It guest starred John DeLancie as Q and was called Qpid. Here is an article in The Guardian from 2014, reporting the cuts made to this episode because of the beheading of two American journalists by members of Islamic State. We spend some time talking about Ben Miller's career. He's one half of Armstrong and Miller, of course, as well as doing two series of Death in Paradise. Paul Cornell's Primeval episode which featured Miller hunting a dinosaur was called Traitor Revealed. When this was shot, Tom Riley was also playing a young Leonardo Da Vinci in Da Vinci's Demons. He was also in St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold (2009) with David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Todd is @toddbeilby, Richard is @RichardLStone, and Adrian is @the_iphoon. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. It's alive! The Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 has been brought back from the dead! The last time I did a show like this was back in 2018 when I presented my Favourite Western Tracks Of All Time. I wanted to make the Top 10 and ongoing series but only a short month later, I went on an 8-month hiatus. I never thought about resurrecting the Top 10 show when I returned, however, I did have one last show planned out, which I found in a playlist in my digital music collection. That was in January and was planning to premiere this show on Valentine's Day but I lost my voice and couldn't record the show in time for the February 14th deadline. Eventually, my voice came back to me and I managed to get this one upload eight days after the Hallmark Holiday. So, welcome back to the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 and I'm looking for suggestions on other Top 10 shows. I'm clear out of ideas right now. Post them in the comments below or send an emial. In the program today, I'm going to play for you my Ten Favourite Love Themes Of All Time and two honourable mentions. You'll hear selections from composers Jerry Goldsmith, Lee Holdridge, John Williams, Miklos Rozsa, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, James Horner, Brian Transeau and more. On Episode 92 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, returning guest host John Arminio joins Skye as they go back to the golden age of Hollywood, 85 years in fact, to discuss one of the all time classics, The Adventures of Robin Hood, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Haviland, Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone. Whilst not the first big screen adaptation of the Robin Hood legend, it set out a template for the innumerable adaptations that would follow. John and Skye discuss the three strip Technicolor process used to shoot the film, the magnificent score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the film's many superbly choreographed fight scenes and it's exemplary cast, all ingredients that come together to create a film that is widely regarded as one of the greatest swashbuckling adventures of all time.

Film music began as a solution to a problem. Early film projectors were really loud, therefore something was needed to cover up all the noise.  In addition, silent movies apparently seemed a bit awkward without any musical accompaniment.   Enter, usually, a pianist, who would improvise musical accompaniments to the events on the screen. None other than Dmitri Shostakovich got his first job as a cinema pianist, honing his improvisatory skills, and sometimes receiving cat calls and boos for his fantasy filled musings that tended to stray away from the action on the screen. Music in the silent film era had to help the audience in pointing out important moments to the audience,  enhancing the emotional effects of the story, and most importantly, it had to give a certain musical line to every character, giving to them the emotional depth that the audience couldn't get since they weren't going to hear their voice.  To do this, early film composers turned to the idea of the Leitmotif, an idea developed by the opera composer Richard Wagner. This idea would take hold even once "talkies" took over the screen, with composers such as Max Steiner, Charlie Chaplin, and others setting the stage for a century of brilliant music, by composers like Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Dmitri Shostakovich, Rachel Portman, Hans Zimmer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Christopher Willis, and dozens and dozens more. Today on the show we'll talk about this development of film music, and also hear some of the greatest and most recognizable film music ever written. We'll also talk about why film music is sometimes looked down upon in the classical music world, and how we might begin to change that perception. Join us!

Und vielleicht, dass die Feinde Richard Wagners (von Brahms bis Nietzsche) „ Carmen“ als willkommenes Gegengift zur Bayreuther Ästhetik Richard Wagners betrachtet haben.

Synopsis On today's date in 1942, Warner Brothers released a film entitled “King's Row,” which included in its cast a 31-year-old actor named Ronald Reagan, who claimed the film “made me a star.” The film's musical score was by someone already a star – the Austrian-born Erich Wolfgang Korngold, famous for his earlier work for Hollywood swashbucklers like “Captain Blood” and “Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn. Korngold's music for “King's Row” proved unusually popular, and Warner Brothers prepared a form letter politely declining inquiries for sheet music or recordings. Back then, film score recordings were not common, and the big studios were jealously protective of anything – including music – that they owned. It wasn't until 1979 – 37 years after the release of the movie – that a full soundtrack recording of “King's Row” was released, produced by the composer's son, George, who was responsible for a major revival of interest in his father's work. In fact, Korngold's main title music from “King's Row” may have provided the model for the American composer John Williams when he wrote his main title music for the 1977 sci-fi swashbuckler “Star Wars.” It's also curious to note that the main title music for “King's Row” was requested by the White House in 1981 for use at the inauguration of President Reagan, who, you may recall, later promoted a ballistic missile defense shield nicknamed by its critics – wait for it – “Star Wars.” Music Played in Today's Program Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897 -1957) — “Main Title,” fr “King's Row” (National Philharmonic; Charles Gerhardt, cond.) In this episode, I explore the rich, melodic and memorable film music of Hollywood Golden Age composer Franz Waxman. Born in Germany in 1906, Waxman was known by his peers as the consummate musician, having studied music in Berlin while supporting himself by performing and arranging pop music of the day in local cafes. Waxman emigrated from Germany to the United States in the early 1930's, along with many talented artists, and became part of that first generation of brilliant musicians who developed and perfected the art of film scoring, alongside giants such as Max Steiner, Alfred Newman and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. I discuss Waxman's place in the early days of the new art form of music for motion pictures (the famed "Golden Age"), plus its development overall for some context, and his evolving style through the highlights during his career, including REBECCA, SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS and TARAS BULBA.   Connect with the podcast on Facebook and Twitter... www.facebook.com/ascoretosettle twitter.com/score2settlepod   Feel free to email the show at ascoretosettlepodcast@gmail.com

In this episode, I talk about and present examples of the marvelous music of Elmer Bernstein, specifically his jazz-oriented scores, like THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, and those in the "Westerns" genre, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN for example. Bernstein was part of the unofficial "second generation" of film composers, along with Alex North, Franz Waxman and others, following on from the "godfathers" of Max Steiner, Alfred Newman and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. He tackled pretty much every genre but there were distinct periods of his career when he was considered the "go-to" guy for jazz scores, then Westerns, then comedies, amid others. This is part of my ongoing "Listening To..." series of the show in which I examine various composers, whether presenting attributes of their overall style, focusing on particular genres or even a certain year of their career. This is not a comprehensive biography of Elmer Bernstein or his entire career, but more of a brief introduction for anyone who might be curious to learn about what to listen for.
