Bride of Frankenstein (1935):  Directed by James Whale, this classic horror film stars Boris Karloff as the Monster and Colin Clive as Dr. Henry Frankenstein. The story follows Henry Frankenstein, who is coerced by his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (played by Ernest Thesiger), and his original creation, the Monster, to create a mate for the Monster. Despite his initial reluctance, Henry eventually constructs the Bride (portrayed by Elsa Lanchester). However, the Bride rejects the Monster, leading to a tragic and fiery conclusion. The Bride (1985):  Directed by Franc Roddam, this film reimagines the Frankenstein story and stars Sting as Baron Charles Frankenstein and Jennifer Beals as Eva. Unlike the original Monster, Eva is physically perfect and human-like. However, she is repulsed by the Monster (played by Clancy Brown) and rejects him, leading to a series of dramatic events. The cast also includes Geraldine Page and David Rappaport. This week Justin Henson of THE MOVIE WIRE and I tackle THE BRIDE from 1985. The Bride is a 1985 period horror film directed by Franc Roddam, and starring Sting, Jennifer Beals, Geraldine Page, and Clancy Brown. Based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the film follows Baron Charles Frankenstein who creates a woman, Eva, while his original monster—believed to have been killed in a laboratory accident—escapes into the countryside. The film, an international co-production between the United Kingdom and the United States, was released theatrically on August 16, 1985 by Columbia Pictures to generally negative reviews from critics. It was a commercial failure, grossing only $3.6 million. We analyze the film - which we desperately wanted to love - but both realize we are only in love with half of it. Now while we enjoyed it more than our respected critics - we agree with many of their complaints...HOWEVER - This did not belong on the WORST OF THE YEAR LIST!! EPISODE 16 - “Beginner's Luck” - 01/01/2024 To win an Oscar sometimes takes decades of hard work and dedication to your craft — just ask PAUL NEWMAN, GERALDINE PAGE, and JESSICA TANDY. In fact, when Newman finally won the Oscar in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” after being nominated six times previously, he didn't even bother to show up to the ceremony. “It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years,” he told the Associated Press. “Finally, she relents and you say, ‘I'm terribly sorry. I'm tired.'” However, there is a small group of actors who didn't have to chase that beautiful Oscar for 80 years. They won for their very first film. This week we take a look at this rarified group. Interiors is the 7th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 1978. Diane Keaton, Mary Beth Hurt and Kristin Griffith play three sisters who barely get along. Their parents (father Arthur played by E.G. Marshall and mother Eve, played by Geraldine Page) have recently separated, leaving the daughters to deal with their family, their partners, their ambitions and their lives. Interiors is Woody Allen's first serious work – a quiet drama about a family. It's not only his first dramatic film – it's his first dramatic ANYTHING. Years of stand up, playwriting, acting and writing comic short stories was put aside for 100 minutes. Not in a bad way- but there is nothing funny about ‘Interiors‘. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast. This week we look at 1978's Interiors. How it was conceived, how it was made, and how it's so unlike any of Allen's other work. Katharine Hepburn - Long Day's Journey into Night Geraldine Page - Sweet Bird of Youth Lee Remick - Days of Wine and Roses - In 1963 Bette Davis was odds on favourite to win her third Oscar and become the first actor to have three for her performance in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. However on Oscar night Davis famously lost to Anne Bancroft for her physically demanding role playing Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker. To add salt in the wounds her on-screen (and allegedly off-screen) enemy Joan Crawford took to the podium to accept the award on Bancroft's behalf. It was viewed as a petty act of revenge toward Davis and to the Academy for not being nominated for Jane. Crawford also allegedly actively campaigned against Davis to ensure her loss. This was definitively a juicy year! You can't really talk about Bancroft's win without talking about the infamous feud between Davis and Crawford. Others nominated were Katharine Hepburn, Geraldine Page, and Lee Remick. This year really came down to Davis vs. Bancroft in our opinion. Listen to our new episode as we discuss! Two Women is the story of a widow (Loren) and her lonely daughter seeking distance between them and the horror of WWII. This was a very stacked year. Audrey Hepburn's performance in Breakfast at Tiffany's is arguably one of the most iconic films in movie history. Piper Laurie gives a devastating performance playing opposite Paul Newman in The Husler as an alcoholic struggling with mental health issues. Geraldine Page plays the very-conservative-girl-next-door in Summer and Smoke. Finally Natalie Wood is “obsessed” with Warren Beatty and her “urges” that eventually cause her to go insane (was a bit confused by this) in Splendor in the Grass. Wood gives a fine performance I just found the ultra-conservative plot/circumstance a bit confusing. Either way! Amazing year with amazing performances! Who do you think should have won? The year is 1986 and the nominees are: 1. Whoopi Goldberg - The Color Purple 2. Meryl Streep - Out of Africa 3. Jessica Lange - Sweet Dreams 4. Geraldine Page - The Trip to Bountiful 5. Anne Bancroft - Agnes of God - In 1986 Geraldine Page finally won her Oscar after being nominated 8 times over the course of 3 decades (similar to Glenn Close - 8 nominations over the course of 4 decades). When she won she was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The industry felt she was overdue and wanted to celebrate her big moment, which is great, but was she the best actress that year? The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 0 and Steven Spielberg was even snubbed as Best Director. Many people thought Whoopi should have won for playing Celie -a black southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father and others over four decades. You also have Meryl Streep at her finest in the cinematic epic (and best Picture Winner) Out of Africa. This is a very stacked year. Jessica Lange gave an amazing performance as country singer Patsy Cline. Anne Bancroft played Mother Miriam Ruth in Agnes of God defending the possibility of an immaculate conception of one of her nuns (a role which Geraldine Page originated on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony). The release of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane in 1962 was followed by a decade of so-called Hagsploitation movies, in which former female Hollywood stars went at each others' throats as hair-raising psycho biddies. The genre has been highly controversial for its depiction of older women and therefore exposing ageism in Hollywood, but Andy and Sam have also found much cult potential and camp in the examples they have watched for this episode: Besides the Bette Davis/Joan Crawford classic, they discuss Tallulah Bankhead's turn in Fanatic! (1965), Debbie Reyolds and Shelley Winters in What's the Matter with Helen? (1971), as well as Ruth Gordon and Geraldine Page battling it out in Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1968). Join our latest episode for some full-throated enthusiasm about the power of old ladies in 60s Hollywood and their legacy in cinema until today.

The daughter of legendary Hollywood actress Shirley MacLaine and Steve Parker, Sachi had a tumultuous childhood and a fractured relationship with her mother, which culminated in her writing a tell-all book about the two of them called "Lucky Me: My Life With – and Without – My Mom, Shirley MacLaine." Fast forward to almost a decade after Sachi wrote that book, and her perspective has changed in a big way. We discuss growing up in Japan and her eventual arrival in LA to reconnect with her mom, who in turn helped her daughter discover her talent for acting, what she learned under the tutelage of Peggy Feury, her first professional gig on "Riders to the Sea" with Geraldine Page and Amanda Plummer in Ireland, "Back to the Future" with Michael J. The year is 1991 and the nominees are: 1. Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost 2. Lorraine Bracco - Goodfellas 3. Annette Bening - The Grifters 4. Mary McDonnell - Dances With Wolves 5. Diane Ladd - Wild at Heart - In 1991 Whoopi Goldberg became the first black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in nearly 50 years, and the second black woman to win an Academy Award for acting (the first being Hattie McDaniel for Gone with the Wind in 1940). Many argued she should have won for The Colour Purple losing out to Geraldine Page in 1986. In 2002 Whoopi sent her Oscar statue to be replated only to have it intercepted and go missing. It was later found in a trash can in a Los Angeles airport and Whoopi has since said she will never part with Oscar again. Her competition included Lorraine Bracco for Goodfellas who frankly should have been a lead but category fraud means nothing to the Academy (as I've learned with this podcast). Annette Bening gave one of her best and funniest performances in The Grifters. Mary McDonnell was in mourning in Dances with Wolves opposite Kevin Costner. Finally, Diane Ladd was nominated for one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, Wild at Heart. A film that I think you either love or you hate. In 1979 Jane Fonda, aka Hanoi Jane (at the time (or maybe to some still)), took home her second Oscar for Coming Home. This was a monumental win not only for Fonda but also her career. Much of America believed her to be a traitor to her own country due to bad selfie stick moments in Vietnam #oops. As a result, she didn’t work in any major motion pictures for years after the incident and her movie career kind of tanked… I really have so much respect for this woman, not just as an actress but also as a brand reinvigorator. She completely remedied her public image over time and won an Oscar, not bad. Other nominees that year included Geraldine Page for Interiors, Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata, Ellen Burstyn in Same Time, Next Year, and Jill Clayburgh for An Unmarried Woman. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Dan Dillabough as they discuss.

Sanokfa.org started five years ago, activating fully after the Trayvon Martin murder and verdict along with many other organizations like Black Lives Matter, Movement 4 Black Lives, The Justice League.Growing up with two parents, Harry and Julie Belafonte, who were and are today, deeply rooted in the Civil Rights Movement having the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Shirley Chisolm and others around her kitchen table inspiring, shaping, and developing her artivist roots and way she moves in the world.A discussion of many social justice issues and organizations that are making a change in the world, looking at how we are only as good in our society as the most marginalized citizens. And a look into how movements are built, strategized and the responsibility we have as human beings being beneficiaries of the legacy and work of those that came before us.How one dinner with her friend Stacy Lynch, daughter of East Coast political strategist, Bill Lynch, became more dinners and has developed into a group of women, working, dreaming, and activating together. The group is calling themselves Daughters of the Movement, taking their stories to a broader audience through panel discussions, speaker series and an upcoming new podcast. To follow Gina Belafonte: LinkedIn | Instagram | TwitterGina Belafonte Bio:Born and raised in New York City, Gina Belafonte has spent her life in the arenas of entertainment and activism where her professional work thrives today. As the youngest child of Julie and Harry Belafonte, whose impact in these fields is among the most influential and progressive in the world, Gina’s passions come as no surprise. Gina was the lead producer on the internationally acclaimed documentary film, SING YOUR SONG, exploring the extraordinary life and legacy of Harry Belafonte that was selected as the opening film for the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.After many years working as actress in NYC, with several off broadway and touring companies like The National Shakespeare Company and The Mirror Reparatory Company in NYC, under the Artistic Direction of John Strasberg, alongside greats such as Geraldine Page, F. Murray Abraham, Anne Jackson and Elisabeth Franz, a series of opportunities to work in film and television moved her to Hollywood, where she appeared in several guest-starring roles, and landed a television series called THE COMMISH. After two formative years on screen with the series, her lifelong passion for stage production ultimately led her to produce theater in Los Angeles. Gina’s technical expertise and insight into the world of film and television production were developed while working with Paula Weinstein and Barry Levinson at Baltimore Spring Creek/Warner Brothers. After becoming a mother, Gina followed her early childhood environment by immersing herself in activism. Collaborating with leading gang interventionist, Bo Taylor, Gina developed a deeper understanding of gang culture by working in the California prison system and co-founded a non-profit organization called The Gathering For Justice. This multi-cultural, multi-generational organization focuses on youth incarceration and the criminalization of poverty. She currently sits on the Board of 2nd Call a community-based organization designed to save lives, by reducing violence and assisting in the personal development of high-risk individuals, proven offenders, ex-felons, parolees and others who society disregards and the internationally acclaimed Actors Gang Theatre founded by Tim Robbins. After dedicating over a decade to addressing gang intervention and incarceration, Gina traveled around the world with her father to bring together two inspiring generations of art and activism with the critically acclaimed HBO film SING YOUR SONG.Today, Gina lives in LA and New York and is working with diverse artists, activists, and organizations worldwide to promote cultural and civic engagement in the 21st century. Ms. Belafonte is currently involved in many artistic ventures, such as producing a documentary film titled Another Night In The Free World that explores the lives of three young women activists, their struggles and challenges and the difference they are making in the world, developing alongside her father with Martin Scorsese on a television mini-series about the colonization of the Congo by King Leopold the 2nd, and the staged version of the Grammy nominated 6 CD box set anthology of black music The Long Road To Freedom. She and her father are the executive producers of Lyrics from Lockdown - a hip-hop theater, multimedia production addressing the impact of wrongful imprisonment and mass incarceration. Driven by her passion for the arts and activism, Gina reflects: "After we finished Sing Your Song, I knew then as long as my dad had an idea, I would do whatever I could to help bring those ideas to fruition, continue the best of my elders’ traditions, and preserve our family’s legacy."Organizations:Sankofa.org: Founded by Harry Belafonte, Sankofa.org educates, motivates, and activates artists and allies in service of grassroots movements and equitable change. Coming Home                                                                           Luke 7:36-50                          A Sermon preached by Rev. Malcolm Frazier, Foundry United Methodist Church August 5, 2018 One of our most endearing sentiments is that of “Coming Home.”  It has a universal appeal and touches us in a special way.  Some of our most popular movies are about coming home.  You might recall some of these:  Movies: Argo – Ben Affleck plays a CIA agent who launches a plan to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the US hostage crisis in Iran in 1979. Lion – starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. The story of a 5-year old Indian boy who gets lost in the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home.  He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia.  25 years later he sets out to find his lost family. The Martian – Matt Damon and Jessica Chastian.. Matt plays an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars after his team assumed he was dead. The Trip to Bountiful – stars the late Geraldine Page as a woman who wants to return to her home during the post-World War II 1940s. When she gets there she finds that the town is deserted. She is moved to tears as she surveys her father’s land and the remains of the family home. Accepting this reality she is at peace – she had gone back home before she died. Lassie Come Home – starring Roddy McDowall, Elizabeth Taylor, and the canine actor, Pal. The movie is set in Depression-era Yorkshire, England.  Lassie’s owners are poor, so they sell their dog to a rich Duke.  His granddaughter knows that the dog is unhappy so arranges for her to escape. Lassie sets off to go home and escapes many dangers before returning to her home. 12 Years A Slave – Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Solomon Northrup, a free African-American man who is 1841 is kidnapped in Saratoga Springs, New York and enslaved again. After some intervention by key people, he is restored to freedom and returns to his family after 12 years. As he walks into his home, he sees his wife with their son and daughter (fully grown) and her husband, who present him with his grandson and namesake, Solomon Northrup Staunton.  Northrup apologizes for his long absence while his family comforts him. Rabbit-Proof Fence – an Australian film set in 1931, about 3 mixed-race Aboriginal young girls who are kidnapped and placed in a camp where they are to be trained to be servants to white families. The three girls escape, one is captured again, and the other two follow a rabbit-proof fence and walk 1500 miles in nine weeks to get back home.  Personal stories of coming home When I came home from college Coming home from England as a first-year student Homecoming in the Black Church Homecoming on Howard’s campus 50-year high school reunion Whenever I came home for the holidays I would drive through my hometown.  Sharon Daloz Parks writes in Big Questions Worthy Dreams that it has been said that home is the most powerful word in the English language.  It is where we start from.  It is what we aspire to.  To be at home is to have a place where we are comfortable; know that we belong, can be who we are; and can honor, protect, and create what we truly love.  To be home within one’s self, place, community, and the cosmos is to feel whole and centered in a way that yields a sense of power and participation.  (To be at home is to be in a special rhythm of life, engaging in patterns of work, play, and diverse relationships.  We have a support system, etc)  Diana Butler Bass in Grounded writes that home happens in numerous geographies and in a number of different dwellings. Home is more than a house. It is a sacred location, a place of aspiration and dreams, of learning and habit, of relationships and heart. People are out of place.  Transient moderns make their homes in new places.  I have been a transient.  When I accepted a position with Global Ministries in New York, I sat in an empty apartment in Maryland the day before and cried and cried and cried.  When the Board moved its headquarters from New York to Atlanta, I moved with it and sat in an empty apartment prior to leaving and cried and cried and cried.  When I was informed that my appointment with the Board was ending, I accepted an appointment in Washington, DC.  The day before I left Atlanta, I sat in an empty apartment and cried and cried and cried.  I cried because I had established a strong relationship in each place and the people had made me feel at home.   TRANSITION  Diana reminds us that home can be a place of horror as well. Too many people have experiences of a home that shelters sickness and addiction, of homes that deteriorate from carelessness and neglect, or homes broken apart through willful violations of the relationships in them, resulting in reports of domestic violence.  I would add reports of incest.  Some social scientists refer to home-centered violence as intimate terrorism.   Those who have no home: The homeless in our midst – mention the ID ministry Those kids kicked out of their homes because they are LGBQT Those who are part of the global migration crisis A recent report from the GBCS share that an estimated 65.3 million people were displaced from their homes by conflict and persecution. Tens of thousands of unaccompanied children are annually apprehended at U. S. borders. For refugees Church World Service reports that the wait in a refugee camp is at least 10 years. Church World Service reports that the vetting process for refugees can take up to two years. Only the most vulnerable are referred, accounting for less than 1% of refugees worldwide being resettled.  TRANSITION  Now let’s look at the Lucan passage that was read this morning. Explore with me how this text informs our theme of Coming Home. While the themes of sin and forgiveness are important, I will focus on how the three main characters relate to each other. This story is set in Galilee early in Jesus’ ministry. Simon the Pharisee – a member of the group of Jewish people who followed a strict code of religious laws. They play the role of Jesus’ opponents, practicing a lifestyle of separation from unbelievers or Jews outside of their own group. The word Pharisee means “separated.” They consider themselves more holy and righteous than ordinary men. In fact, Luke reports in the 30th verse that the Pharisees refused to be baptized by John and rejected God’s purpose for themselves. So why did the Pharisee invite Jesus to his house for dinner? Let’s begin with the fact he could. He had the wealth and thus the power to do so. And he could be selective about who he invited. His attitude is ambivalent – he addresses Jesus as Teacher but did not show hospitality. Why not? Perhaps because he was busy hosting his other guests that he was trying to impress. Simon was perhaps giving Jesus an assessment, trying to determine his credentials. The Pharisee, with his arrogance, represents those who look down on others. (talk about the scene in “Philadelphia” when the librarian looks with disdain on Tom Hanks’ character) The woman – who is referred to as a sinner Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza in an essay from In Memory of Her points out that the story does not say what kind of sinner the woman was. A sinner could be a criminal, a ritually unclean or a morally bad person, a prostitute, or simply the “wife of a notorious sinner.”  (Jesus was always in the company of people like her and others) Look at her actions – she enters the dinner scene uninvited, ignoring the boundaries of class and patriarchy. She washes Jesus’ feet and dries them with her hair. Touching or caressing a man’s feet could have sexual implications, as did letting one’s hair down in public. She created quite a scene. Jesus – so what does he do? Jesus challenges us to confront the Pharisees in our society. He exposes Simon’s lack of hospitality (he did not greet him with a kiss, offer him water to wash his feet, or offer to put oil on his head) In the Middle East the importance of honor and shame is very high. Jesus showed bad table manners by insulting his host and in doing so becomes the host, as evidenced by his encounter with the woman. I would like to suggest that Jesus presents a model for how we should confront people and structures that prevent everyone from being included, feel wanted, affirmed and protected. We say NO to immigration policies that prevent us from welcoming the neighbor. We say NO to the Book of Discipline that would deny T. C. Morrow the privilege of serving as an elder. We say NO to institutions that tolerate the abuse of the elderly, the mentally challenged or other vulnerable We say NO to the racism in our penal system, causing a disproportional number of black and brown persons in mass incarceration. We say NO to sexism in Corporate America and our churches. We say NO to white supremacists, participating in love rallies. We say NO to racial profiling. We say NO to schools that pass kids through who cannot read.  TRANSITION  As I approach my conclusion, let’s look at the importance of the scene being one of a dinner. I frame this again around the work of Diana Butler Bass, who writes in Grounded about John Wesley’s emphasis on holy habits and declares: Home is a training ground for spiritual and ethical habits that we take out into the world, with the door and table being the school for holy habits. It is around tables where we learn what to eat and how, ways to set a table for special meals or guests, how to share customs and traditions, and how to serve others. (share personal story about Cambodia or China) The table is the earthly manifestation of God’s presence, the “heavenly feast,” where all are fed and sustained and no one suffers from the lack of anything. This closely aligns with the Pacific Islanders practices of reciprocity and mutuality. Times of fellowships and meals are inherently spiritual as they promote the body’s growth by making the mundane sacred. Meals are never just a time of eating, it is always a time of sharing the journey. Meal times are times of celebration and feasting. The abundant display of food affirms the bountiful providence of God, a celebration of what God is able to do in the midst of scarcity. (share about my meals with them)  As I reflect on this text, I marvel at how Jesus, by assuming the role as host, transforms this home into a sacred place where all are welcome. All means all. Larry Stookey writes in Eucharist that Jesus’ fellowship is a manifestation of a new creation, which embraces all who are discriminated against in the course of human activity. To this feast, all are invited by God on equal terms. No one approaches the feast by means of merit, but all are invited by grace. There no one can boast or dominate or exclude, for this is Christ’s feast.  Christ is the host and the one who sets the rules (of acceptance, mutuality, and inclusion). Maya Angelou writes that the ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned. Foundry UMC, as I come home to my annual conference, I will partner with you to welcome anyone who wants to join our family – anyone who wants to make Foundry UMC their home.  No one will be excluded.

She also explains why she considers her every appearance on stage to be a rehearsal, not a performance; her attraction to the groundbreaking play "Dutchman" by LeRoi Jones (now Amiri Baraka), which she did in Los Angeles and on film; how she shifted from a planned career in music to acting and her trek out west to the Pasadena Playhouse to pursue that new goal; the extraordinary experience of appearing as Irina in "The Three Sisters" in her Broadway debut, with Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley as her siblings under the direction of Lee Strasberg -- and why she chose that role over playing Ophelia to Richard Burton's "Hamlet"; her years working in England, notably in plays by her husband John Hopkins, which she continued to perform upon their return to the U.S.; her memorable role in Robert Patrick's "Kennedy's Children"; what it was like to have Tennessee Williams write a role expressly for her in "A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur"; her affinity for the plays of fellow Kansan William Inge and her role in creating the ongoing Inge Festival; and her affection for the work of Horton Foote, which marked her most recent Broadway appearance, in the Pulitzer-winning "The Young Man from Atlanta". Original air date - April 28, 2010.
