In this episode, Jamie speaks with Arlin Sorensen, multiple time company founder, entrepreneur, and current Vice President Ecosystem Evangelism at ConnectWise. Arlin was a farmer turned tech entrepreneur having founded 22 companies or business units. Arlin shares how bringing the “Go Giver” philosophy into his businesses helped him create deeper relationships with customers and employees. Arlin is a man of deep faith and touts the importance of living authentically, bringing your whole self to work, which for him included incorporating Biblical principles into his business practices and speaking about his faith in the workplace. His passion for helping others master both business and legacy planning led to his creation of a Peer Groups business, a way to help leaders grow and support one another both on their business journeys and their pursuit of “success to significance.” Arlin describes great leadership as an upside-down triangle where leaders are at the bottom; “leadership is not about you.” Arlin's exceptional leadership and, in particular, his conviction about sharing his faith with others impacted me enormously in this discussion and I invite you to experience it as well. Richard speaks to Arlin Sorensen, Founder of a wildly-successful USA-based MSP as well as Heartland Technology Group, a peer mentoring network.
Arlin Sorensen is the founder and CEO of HTG Peer Groups, a consulting, coaching, and legacy planning company. Arlin began his life on his family farm in rural Iowa. After learning how to maintain computers and accounting software, in the early days of the technology, Arlin founded Sorensen’s Computer Connection in 1985. After a rocky early 2000s, Arlin pivoted the company through M&A creating Heartland Technology Solutions. HTG or Heartland Tech Groups began around the same time. In December 2012, Arlin sold his IT company to West Iowa Telephone and in January 2018 sold HTG Peer Groups to ConnectWise. Arlin's journey to a sale was a long and complicated one. Arlin tells me how he filled talent gaps in his team on the road to company growth. He explains how his mindset changed as the team changed. HTG has completed ten successful mergers and acquisitions over the years. He walks me through the process of an acquisition and shares why planning is a key part of any successful business. You will learn about: Arlin's background in farming and IT management. How Y2K changed Arlin's business. The mindset change that caused Arlin to try M&A. The first company acquisition and the awesome team that developed after it. The second company acquisition and the shift into peer group consulting. How the new team helped get Arlin and his business become more financially disciplined. What is a platform and how to use it effectively? The factors Arlin and his team consider during an acquisition. The changes Arlin made to the company with every acquisition. Why HTS was sold. Arlin's non-negotiable conditions to a sale and why they were important. Arlin's advice to the listeners. Planning is key. Takeaways: It takes a lot of hard work to plan a company exit. Know what you want from a business sale before you even start looking for a buyer. Have some non-negotiables to vet the right candidate. Have a legacy goal, a life after business plan, leadership plan, and business plan, when you plan the path is straight and decision making is a lot easier. I recently went to Omaha, NE to spend two days with my guest to create my Life Plan. Her dad, and my dear friend, Arlin Sorensen felt I had lost my purpose after my mom passed away. He was right in that I lost my ability to see it, having pushed me aside to be with my mom for the last six years. Those two days have transformed me on the inside. I feel lit up again with possibility. Including the possibility that taking care of me is a part of my plan. So what is a life plan and how does several years in China as a missionary set one up to help others connect to and define their life's purpose? Laurie Sorensen shares the 5 domains critical to a Life Plan, what happens when one or more is out of alignment and she even shares a few exercises you can do on your own to begin creating your own life plan. If you cannot verbalize your purpose in this world, or if you want to get clear how what you need to do next, you will want to listen to this interview. Laurie Sorensen serves as a Learning Architect with HTG Peer Groups where she is energized by thinking, planning, speaking and writing on topics to help leaders grow. Laurie is the author of the Planning for Success workbook which guides people through Business, Leadership, Life, and Legacy planning the HTG Way. She blends her intuitive ability to connect with people and her passion for learning as she designs experiences that help people to grow personally and go home equipped to make a difference for others. Laurie’s favorite part of her job is walking with leaders as a facilitator of the LifePlan process, a 2-day guided journey. Outside of work hours you can find Laurie spending time with international students or volunteering with Safe Families, a ministry that helps to stabilize families in need.
Do you know there are not just one or two types of success plans but four? Do you know that each one is integral to each other? Have you ever thought that you really could have it all in your business and your personal life? There is much talk about balance between our business and personal lives but how many people do you know that really are able to achieve it? I know I struggle with it. My guest has successfully built and sold two business and is still running a few others while maintaining a life outside work and inside work that he is proud to talk about to others. In the process, he discovered the four key success plans everyone should complete. On this episode Arlin shares how he created his strategy towards growth, what the four success plans are and how you can create your plans and what he feels is the most important think you can do to achieve your dreams.
