Jenny Hagel Gives Great Advice (That I Asked For)

Parenting is a Joke

Jenny Hagel joins Ophira Eisenberg to talk about parenting through big feelings, awkward questions, creative careers, and the strange emotional math of raising boys while working in comedy. Jenny shares how her now-12-year-old son transformed from a tiny Brooklyn tornado she once carried out of donut shops “like a sack of potatoes” into a “fun, chill roommate,” and explains how one preschool meltdown led to the line “my mad is too big for my body,” which completely changed the way she thought about tantrums and emotional regulation. The conversation moves from Mad Libs ruined by the phrase “diarrhea juice” to surprisingly thoughtful discussions about kids' emotional language, including Jenny's son describing a crush as “a string” connecting two hearts. Ophira and Jenny also compare notes on parenting boys with huge emotions, the pressure put on working mothers, and the exhausting flood of parenting advice from strangers who assume every family has the same structure and flexibility. Jenny talks about building her live comedy show Advice Nobody Asked For during the writers strike, where audience members anonymously submit questions into buckets labeled “family,” “love,” and “job,” before a real therapist comes onstage to grade the advice — including the time Jenny recommended secretly vaccinating a relative's baby while babysitting. Along the way they talk about single parenting, Late Night with Seth Meyers, queer parenting, American work culture, and therapy as an emotional toolbox.

Why People Ignore Great Advice And How Leaders Create Action

Send us Fan MailYou can give someone a genuinely great answer and still watch nothing change. That gap between “I understand” and “I did it” is where leadership and coaching either level up or break down. I'm Mark, and I'm digging into why advice so often fails, what's really happening in people's minds, and how to lead in a way that creates action without making everyone dependent on you. We start with a familiar high-stakes leadership moment: one person is underperforming, the whole team knows it, and nobody wants to say the hard thing. Avoiding it creates a culture. Coming in aggressive creates fear. I walk through a calmer third approach built on curiosity, standards, and better questions, plus why these challenging conversations create the biggest results in work and in life. Then we get to the core framework: technical solutions versus adaptive challenges. Most people hunt for tactics, steps, and strategy, but the real blocker is often belief, shame, and self-protection. That's why “just follow the plan” falls flat, even for high performers. I share how leaders accidentally train dependence by always providing answers, and how to flip the script by becoming the person people come to for questions, using prompts that clarify the best of the past, the present, and the potential future. We also bring it home with parenting and relationship examples, including the simple habit of asking whether someone wants advice, listening, or coaching. If you want to lead high-stakes conversations with more trust and less guessing, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a leader who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Want to show up as the best version of you in the moments that matter most?Start by taking our 2-minute quiz at modernleadership.us/quiz!

The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

It's Friday. My wife's been out of town for a whole week. I spent the quiet time digging into famous quotes — the kind you've heard a thousand times but never sat with. Woody Allen. Yogi Berra. Will Rogers. Thomas Edison. The old voices still hit if you sit with them for a minute. Today, I ran seven of their best lines through Scott Logic. You'll leave with a simple way to show up, move when you're stuck, and stop rehearsing the life you're supposed to be living. Press play. Bring coffee. Featured Story My wife has scales everywhere. Kitchen scales. Bathroom scale. She weighs her food like a chemist measuring compounds. Twice a week, she hands me a perfectly measured bowl of ice cream. Four ounces, maybe five. It's good stuff. This week she's out of town. I found the half-gallon in the freezer and went to work. Night one. Night two. Night three. Somewhere around night three, I gave myself too much and realized exactly why she measures. Now I have a problem. Do I eat the rest and pretend it was never there? Do I buy a replacement and slide it onto the shelf? I'll tell you what I'm going to do. Important Points Your competition is mostly imaginary. Most never started or already quit, so showing up 70% puts you ahead of the pack. A wrong turn can always be fixed. Standing frozen at the intersection is where life actually runs you over for good. Figure out what you do naturally, without anyone pushing you, and you'll find the thing you should be doing for real. Memorable Quotes The competition is mostly imaginary. Half never started, the other half quit. Show up and the math takes care of itself. A wrong turn, you can fix. Standing at the intersection, you get honked at and hit by a truck. Life runs you over. Failure is just data. If you pay attention and collect enough of it, you accidentally become an expert in the room. Scott's Three-Step Approach Show up and pick a direction. Most of your competition never started or already quit, so being there puts you ahead. Keep moving when you stumble. Each mistake is just data that stacks until you accidentally become an expert in the room. Handle the unfinished business tonight. Don't let it fester until morning, or it will wear you out by tomorrow. Chapters 0:02 - Wife out of town, and the neighbors keep checking on me 0:41 - Half a gallon of ice cream becomes a real dilemma 3:18 - Why Woody Allen was right about showing up 80% 5:07 - Yogi Berra's fork in the road and how to pick 7:54 - Thomas Edison and 10,000 ways that don't work 9:35 - Why going to bed mad wears you out tomorrow 12:22 - Mae West's truth about living once, done right Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify If you enjoy the Daily Boost, you might like Notes From Scott. Dr. Kate Lund has spent much of her career as a psychologist studying children and parenting.  She's distilled much of what she's learned in her most recent book, Step Away: The Keys to Resilient Parenting.  In this episode, she describes who she persevered during her own childhood challenges and offers great advice for how we can all remain resilient during these difficult times.    Chapters: 00:00 Overcoming Childhood Challenges  Dr. Kate Lund, a clinical psychologist and author, shares her personal journey of growing up with hydrocephalus, including multiple surgeries and feeling different from her peers. Despite these difficulties, her family's support and their focus on 'what you can do' fostered an early sense of optimism and resilience within her.  03:32 Optimism and Parental Influence  Dr. Lund discusses whether optimism is innate or learned, attributing her own glass-half-full perspective to her upbringing and her parents' positive attitudes. She shares a touching anecdote about her father, who, despite battling Parkinson's disease, taught her the importance of participation over perfection.  09:02 Journey to Psychology and Career Shift  Kate reflects on her early interest in people and medical situations, which eventually led her to pursue psychology in college. After a White House internship, she realized that the fast-paced media world was not for her, solidifying her path toward a career in psychology where she could truly flourish.  11:58 The Pillars of Resilient Children  Dr. Lund explains how her focus on parenting and resilience originated from her fellowship at Schreiner's Hospital, where she studied the impact of serious medical situations on children and their parents. She introduces her 'seven pillars of the resilient child,' emphasizing resilience as a foundational lifestyle for overall well-being.  15:00 Creating Optimism in Kids  Discussing the societal trend of 'bubble wrapping' children, Dr. Lund advocates for building resilience to empower kids from the inside out. She emphasizes creating optimism by intentionally focusing on daily positive experiences, a practice she believes helps shift perspectives from negative self-talk to a more positive outlook.  19:22 Social Media's Impact on Parenting  Dr. Lund addresses the significant impact of social media on parenting and children's well-being, particularly in exacerbating comparison and anxiety, using the college admissions process as an example. She stresses the importance of teaching children to understand their unique context and the curated reality often presented on social platforms.  25:49 Resilient Parenting and Authenticity  Dr. Lund introduces her book, 'Step Away,' which focuses on parents creating space for their own well-being to better support their families. She discusses developing a resilient mindset by managing stress responses and fostering authentic human connections with children, emphasizing the importance of sharing personal challenges in a developmentally appropriate way.  33:40 Grit, Perseverance, and Letting Kids Learn  Dr. Lund acknowledges the importance of grit, as popularized by Angela Duckworth, as a crucial component of resilience. She discusses the tough parental dilemma of when to intervene versus when to let children face consequences to foster learning and self-advocacy.  38:50 Fostering Optimism and Future Projects  Dr. Lund reiterates the importance of the 'daily wins' exercise and helping children see possibilities beyond challenges to build lasting optimism. She concludes by discussing her new podcast, 'Resilient Parenting with Dr. Kate,' which complements her latest book and offers insights for parents.

From early development through the high school years, we unpack what “pushing” really means—and where the line exists between healthy accountability and harmful pressure.Through honest stories and personal experiences, we explore the tension between wanting the best for your kids and knowing when to step back. We talk about effort vs. results, preparation vs. performance, and why pushing for attitude, consistency, and work ethic matters far more than stats or outcomes. You'll hear real-life examples of getting it right—and getting it wrong—and how those moments shape not just athletes, but young adults. We also break down how pushing should evolve as kids grow, why middle school years are so critical, and how parents can shift from hands-on guidance to helping their athletes take ownership. Whether you're a parent in the thick of it or a coach trying to lead the right way, this episode will challenge your perspective and give you a clearer framework for developing resilient, motivated athletes—without sacrificing the relationship that matters most.

On today's program, Michael Rogers talks with Cheryl Tallman, CEO & Founder of Fresh Baby in Petoskey, recently named to the 2026 list of Michigan 50 Companies to Watch. Founded in 2002, Fresh Baby provides nutrition education for public health agencies. What kinds of actions does she recommend to small business owners if they want to stay healthy? "Obviously, the focus is to avoid processed foods," Tallman says. "A second thing that people can do is physical activity. We all know that we need to get up and move throughout the day. The goal should be 60 minutes of activity. And you can kind of divide that 60 minutes up into ten minute increments of getting yourself moving, get up from your desk, take a walk, go out at lunch, move around a little bit, dance, things like that. So eat real food, be active for 60 minutes a day, and then it is extremely important for us to get good sleep. Good sleep reduces stress." The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own.  Our 32,000 members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! We started by unpacking one of Indu's powerful statements: "The goal of yoga is yoga. Everything else is a side benefit." This conversation invites teachers to look beyond flexibility, strength, and stress relief — and into yoga as a state of realization. Indu draws from classical teachings and the commentary on the Yoga Sutras to clarify that yoga is not simply a practice — it is a state of samadhi, a realization of the unchanging self beneath the ever-changing body, mind, and emotions. We take a deep dive into one of Indu's main areas of wisdom, Yoga Nidra and then finish the conversation with some salient pieces of wisdom for all yoga teachers.  In this episode you'll hear: why modern practitioners and teachers get stuck focusing on the "fix" why Yoga Nidra is both powerful and accessible how to keep Yoga Nidra from becoming robotic why you should make nature your guru the power of unlearning how to choose a teacher why we both love confusion and doubt Learn More From Indu www.yogsadhna.com https://www.instagram.com/induaroraofficial/ This episode is brought to you by OfferingTree, an easy-to-use, all-in-one online platform for yoga teachers that provides a personal website, booking, payment, blogging, and many other great features. Most advisors genuinely want to help. But the industry's compensation structures and "hat switching" can create incentives that unintentionally pull advice away from the client's best interest. In this episode, Adam Koós breaks down the most common red flags that show up in sales-driven advice, especially when fee explanations are vague, product recommendations come too early, or clients feel pressured. Then, Adam flips the script and outlines what good advice looks like in practice: planning-first discovery, transparent compensation, clear pros and cons, and a relationship that builds client confidence instead of dependence. This is a practical checklist advisors can use to tighten their own process and investors can use to protect themselves. This week, I will be speaking with a solo RVer who has found tremendous purpose as a volunteer Workamper for seven years, while starting an online platform to share his adventures. My guest today is Sam Gennawey, an urban planner turned full-time RVer who has been living on the road for more than seven years. What began as a search for a more intentional future quickly became a lifestyle that allowed Sam to explore America's most remarkable places while keeping his expenses manageable. Sam travels in a 2012 Airstream Interstate, which is a black Mercedes-based touring van he affectionately calls Darlene. He has put nearly 200,000 miles on the vehicle, boondocking across the country, sleeping in unexpected places, such as minor league ballparks, and navigating everything from flat plains to rugged mountain passes. Along the way, he has lived and worked in some of America's most iconic national parks as a volunteer interpreter and campground host. Big Bend, Death Valley, the Redwoods, North Cascades, Aztec Ruins and Sequoia National Park are just a few of the places that have become temporary “home.” Sam's experiences offer a valuable look at the realities, challenges and joys of long-term RV travel, and how volunteering can make the lifestyle more sustainable, meaningful and affordable. Sam offered terrific advice for anyone considering the RV lifestyle, especially those people over 60 who want to travel with purpose. He encouraged people to take an honest assessment of their personalities to determine whether they enjoy long stretches of solitude or if they'd thrive working alongside other people. Whichever the case, he said the lifestyle requires flexibility, resilience and the willingness to work through unexpected weather, repairs and delays. He noted that RVing is often more difficult and more expensive than people expect, which is why maintaining a realistic mindset is essential. Something will always need attention or  break, and the weather will not always cooperate. Yet the rewards are immense. Living inside national parks, hiking trails before the gates open, seeing landscapes without crowds and learning from park rangers are opportunities that don't come with any other lifestyle. Sam also urged newcomers to travel like a bison by walking into challenges rather than running from them, because persistence helps you reach the other side faster. For him, volunteering has been the key to keeping expenses low, preserving his van's lifespan, and experiencing America's popular places more deeply. People can follow Sam's ongoing travels, photos and stories on Facebook. He posts regularly about the parks he lives in, the routes he takes and the adventures that shape his life on the road. You can also buy Sam's book, “Sacred Landscapes,” on Amazon and in other bookstores. If you'd like to be inspired by someone who is squeezing every drop out of life, you'll enjoy connecting with Sam and following his remarkable journey. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Luke 17:20-25 - Asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, "The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, 'Look, here it is,' or, 'There it is.' For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you." Then He said to His disciples, "The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. There will be those who will say to you, 'Look, there He is,' or 'Look, here He is.' Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in His day.But first He must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation." Raveling passed away early this month at 88 after living a life shaped by being in the right place at the right time — and knowing what to do when he got there. As a boy, after losing his father and seeing his mother institutionalized, he found stability at a Catholic boarding school. That path led him to become the first African-American basketball player at Villanova … to meet coaching legend Bobby Knight … to join the U.S. Olympic coaching staff in 1984, where he met a young Michael Jordan's and helped guide Jordan toward a Nike contract that would change sports, culture, and business forever. But Raveling's greatest “right place, right time” moment? Standing at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had just finished speaking. Raveling asked for a copy of the speech — and King handed him the original “I Have a Dream” manuscript. A lesson to all of us on how to get the most out of our moments.

The poll reveals overwhelming approval for requiring voter ID at the polls and proof of citizenship when registering to vote—two common-sense solutions that Democrats continue to oppose.Next, they applaud GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance for offering excellent advice on political divisions. Vance urged people at a town hall not to let political differences destroy friendships and family relationships. Jim and Greg emphasize that elections do matter and they matter a lot, but allowing our political differences to radically impact our personal lives is not healthy. Finally, they react to a Politico story revealing that a lot of Washington, DC, residents intentionally made travel plans to avoid being in the nation's capital on Election Day and in the days after. They fear post-election violence. Jim and Greg shake their heads at that and also push back against the narrative that right-wing activists are the primary threat, calling out the bias in the story. Please visit our great sponsors:BetterHelphttps://betterhelp.com/3MLVisit the 3ML website for 10% of your first month.  Zbioticshttps://zbiotics.com/3MLUse code 3ML at checkout to save 15% off your first order.

In this engaging podcast episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mama B, also known as JacQ Becker, a talented children's music creator, writer, and producer. Mama B recently released her first solo album, "Imagineology," a delightful blend of pop, jazz, and hip hop designed to appeal to both children and parents. Mama B's Background in Music and Transition to Children's Music Mama B's love for music began at a young age, influenced by legends like Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. She pursued her passion by working in various roles within the music industry, including marketing, film and TV licensing, and publishing. Her transition to children's music was a natural progression, inspired by her experiences as a parent. She aimed to create music that both children and parents could enjoy, especially since parents often play these songs on repeat. The Making of "Imagineology" "Imagineology" is the result of Mama B's collaboration with talented producers and musicians who were new to the children's music space but excited about the project. The album's first single, "Unicorn," (just released) was an experiment in blending child-friendly themes with production styles typically intended for adult audiences. JacQ's Advice for Aspiring Artists JacQ emphasizes the importance of authenticity and songwriting skills for aspiring artists. She encourages creators to focus on their strengths and not to get overwhelmed by the need to be perfect or to excel in areas outside their core talent. She also advises artists to release their work into the world and not to be overly self-critical. In her experience, many great songs never get released because artists are too self-critical. Conclusion This podcast offers a fascinating glimpse into Mama B's journey in the music industry and her passion for creating children's music. Her advice for aspiring artists is both practical and inspiring, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in music and creativity.  Please checkout all things MAMA B:  Listen to UNICORN - https://open.spotify.com/album/76aMKaGdIVcOual3X2ovpG?uid=718d2941eb68b15e9f93&uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A69gcXDnbkDi4TtIXhWhoiW www.youtube.com/@mamabsongs +  Instagraminstagram.com/mamabsongs  TikToktiktok.com/@mamabsongs  Facebookfacebook.com/MamaBSongs  Spotifyopen.spotify.com/artist/0yFdwmRwiMLMnuvQ6XmRQX  Apple Musicmusic.apple.com/us/artist/mama-b/1581199873   Thanks for listening in, and thanks to our sponsors, and behind the scene crew that makes this podcast happen :) Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris is sponsored by Kathy Ireland Worldwide & with support from Music Crowns in London, and Nigel John Farmer.~ my co-producer and voice over talent from his studio @VoiceWrapStudio.com Our thanks to Rodney Hall FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for our intro and outro backing music clip.    A Big Shout and thanks to our friends at #AudioGeer , @sullenfamily and the awesome support! #Shure #MV7 #podcast mic!  Please check out our Music Matters podcast on @spotifypodcasts Hey, also check out the New Music Matters Podcast Website-  Please, support, LIKE and help us grow - check out our Social Media pages: #music #love #hiphop #rap #art #musician #artist #musica #instagood #singer #instagram #rock #like #dance #guitar #photography #song #bhfyp  #newmusic #life #producer #fashion #rapper #viral #songwriter #creative #podcast
