Today on Post-Progressive Inquiries I explore the contours of the next stage of human development with psychiatrist and futurist Charles M. Johnston. Charles has just released two new books exploring an emerging way of thinking that he calls the “integrative meta-perspective”. Mckinsey Global Institute found that data-driven organizations are 23 times more likely to acquire customers, six times more likely to retain customers, and 19 times more likely to be profitable. Charles Davis is a data analytics expert. He is Vice President and a partner at Blast Analytics & Marketing, a strategic analytics consulting company. Blast solves clients' data challenges to help optimize marketing campaigns, improve customer experience, increase competitive advantage, and, ultimately, EVOLVE organizations. Blast has been named one of Inc. magazine's top 5000 fastest-growing private companies. In this episode, Charles Davis shares strategies to use data analytics to make data-driven decisions that drive growth. Charles' Journey to Become an Analytics Expert In college, Charles' wife had an incredible idea to start a meal preparation business. Charles was studying biology and computer science at the time, but when he graduated, he and his wife focused on growing this meal preparation business for about five to six years. Their business had so much growth they expanded to about 20-25 different locations. As Charles was growing his meal preparation business, he was a client of Blast Analytics and worked very closely with the CEO of Blast Analytics. After selling the meal preparation business, Blast offered Charles a job, and Charles joined their team. Blast now provides a great place to work for about 65 teammates across the country. Making Data-Driven Decisions and Using Intuition: Putting the Two Together Insight-driven businesses are growing at an average of 30% each year; by 2021, they are predicted to take $1.8 trillion annually from their less-informed industry competitors. (source: Keboola) While I worked at Deseret Digital Media with Clark Gilbert, one of his core strategies was making data-driven decisions. He taught me that it doesn't matter what my opinion is or somebody else's opinion is, test them both, and let's find out what actually works. Then, let's make our decisions based on the data. That was an enlightening perspective that changed my view about business decision-making. Too often, business decisions are made based on “who” is right, and we end up making less-effective decisions than when we collect great data and make decisions based on that data. Data-driven decisions can often make us look really smart. Charles and Blast help their clients do more of what works and less of what doesn't by leveraging data analytics and intuition. Charles said, “As a good business person or a good human, we have good intuition in the details. We can also use data to drive that intuition forward and make sure that our business decisions are as informed as they can be. I worry sometimes that people think making data-driven decisions means we're not using our business sense or intuition.” He followed up by explaining that our intuition doesn't work if we are using bad data to make a decision. We should consider being more data-driven. “Making good data-driven decisions means we're making that decision with all the right information we need in order to make the best decisions we can.” How to Build Credibility Through Industry Associations In the book I'm writing, I focus on credibility as one of the most important tectonic shifts today. Credibility can come in many different ways, such as through participating with associations and tradeshows. Charles described two of the biggest factors that have helped Blast build credibility through industry associations and events. Serving as part of the Digital Analytics Association. Charles has been a member of the Digital Analytics Association and volunteered his time on different initiatives. He recently joined the board of directors. He has also helped lead the local Bay Area Chapter for seven to eight years. The opportunity to serve and help the digital analytics industry move forward through educational events and other initiatives has helped build credibility for Charles and Blast while working with peers from different companies. The longevity of going to conferences and events. These events and conferences have all gone online during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Charles is still able to connect with those he has seen every year from various conferences and summits. “I've presented at different conferences as well, and those give you the opportunity to build credibility. One of the great things about our industry is that it is a very supportive industry,” Charles said. There is a Slack channel that has also been set up within the digital analytics industry, which allows people to connect, ask questions, and receive responses to their questions. “It's things like that: the sharing of knowledge, the participating in the community, etc. that ultimately builds credibility. Almost every industry has some kind of community associated with it, and if you go into that community looking to serve, you will gain a good reputation. It will give you an opportunity to grow and progress your career.” The Most Important Pieces of Data: Quantitative & Qualitative Charles explains that there are two types of data every entrepreneur should be looking for, and how we can use those types of data to learn about our customers and business. “When we talk about data, we often only think of what we would call quantifiable data. This includes how many visitors come to our website, how many sales we have, etc. What's often missing with this data is the qualitative side, such as why were those people coming to our website, and why did they make purchases,” Charles said. If he were to give advice to any entrepreneur, it would be to understand the difference between quantitative data and qualitative data and then collect both. Charles described a curse of knowledge that we entrepreneurs sometimes have. “We know our business really well and how everything works. Then we get blind spots when somebody from the outside comes in, uses our product or service, and then tells us they don't know how to get from ‘Step A' to ‘Step B.' However, we think it's obvious how to go from step A to B.” Blast was working with a client by conducting a quantitative test. This company had enough traffic, so they decided to do A/B testing. In this case, they discovered results they weren't expecting. Luckily, they also had qualitative data on top of that test, and they were able to survey a small percentage of the customers. What they found was that a set of customers were coming to specific website pages who had a completely different purpose for being there than what was expected. They never would have discovered this if they just relied on the A/B test. “As entrepreneurs, if we can understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative data, and incorporate both as inputs to our learning, that's my best advice.” - Charles Davis Digital Analytics Tools Some great tools in the digital analytics world that Charles recommends are Google Analytics, Google Data Studio, Sessioncam, and Hotjar. Google Analytics Google provides Google Analytics which is free to customers up to a certain amount of traffic. “Probably 95% of the websites in the world are using Google Analytics because it's free,” Charles said. This is probably the most well-known free tool. Google Data Studio Another tool by Google, Google Data Studio, is not as well-known, but it is a great visualization tool that is pretty simple to use by pulling data from a spreadsheet. Charles said that even relative novices can use the tool to connect a visualization tool to a spreadsheet in order to analyze data better. We can analyze year-to-year trends, segment customers, and more by using Google Data Studio. Sessioncam and Hotjar Sessioncam and Hotjar are great tools for gathering qualitative data, and they are fairly inexpensive. We can put them on our websites which will allow us to ask questions or survey customers in order to gather better data. Analytics to Measure Charles suggests we always segment our data, and segment specifically our customer base. No customer has the same needs, nor is any customer the same type. As entrepreneurs, it's good to understand who our best customers are, what they're doing, and how often they're re-purchasing from us. It's also important to recognize our average customers and worst customers. “This segmentation of our customer base is probably the most powerful thing that business owners should be doing with their data,” Charles said. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Charles for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Do more of what works, and less of what doesn't work. Conduct tests to discover what actually works. Then make decisions based upon the data. We can make data-driven decisions together with our intuition to improve the success of our decisions. Sharing knowledge, being involved, and serving within the community create opportunities to grow our careers and gain credibility. Look for ways to gather quantitative and qualitative data. There are great, free, and inexpensive tools out there to gather and analyze data such as the Google tools, Sessioncam, and Hotjar. Segment data, specifically to a customer base. As Charles the Bold spent the final years of his life campaigning, two women became integral parts of Burgundian society and politics - his daughter, Mary of Burgundy, and his wife, Margaret of York. Mary, whose mother Isabella of Bourbon died when she was young, is often portrayed as little more than a pawn in her father’s machinations. Those machinations sent him to an icy demise when Mary was just nineteen years old, however, and she was thrust into the centre of the political upheavals which rocked the Low Countries. But Mary did not face this turmoil alone, because in 1468 her father had married Margaret of York, an English princess who directly linked the political tumult of England during the War of the Roses, with that of Burgundy. These two, step-mother and step-daughter, formed a particular bond which they would need to rely on after Charles’ death in order to protect the Burgundian state from the threats it faced. In this episode we are going to rewind-in-time a little and explore the lives, characters, connections and actions of Mary of Burgundy and Margaret of York before Charles the Bold’s death. Curious about one of the newest discoveries in the nature of viruses? This discussion explores an exciting find in virus behavior and their ability to communicate: quorum sensing by bacteriophages. Listen and learn What a team in Israel discovered in 2017 about viral communication that set the groundwork for Charles Bernard's research, How the importance of virus and host balance dictates virus survival and therefore initiates this communication regarding density, and What therapeutic applications might develop from viruses using quorum sensing to control bacteria life cycles. Charles Bernard is a PhD student at Sorbonne Université in Paris, working on microbiome communication. He says that quorum sensing means the "minimal number of bacteria or viruses to be present for a collective behavior to be efficient and therefore triggered." But what is viral communication? An important discovery was made in Israel in 2017 when a lab found that a temperate bacteriophage communicates by taking over the cellular machinery of their host bacteria. It signals to other viral particles in a way that determines the host-to-bacteriophage density. In other words, the virus must decide whether to replicate quickly via a lytic cycle or slow down and keep its host alive through a lysogenic cycle, which protects the host. That decision is determined by the ratio of bacteria to bacteriophage: the more bacteria, the better the lytic tradeoff works. The less bacteria, the more host the virus needs to preserve to be able to survive. The genome of the bacteriophage contains genes that produce a signal and a receptor. They use this back-and-forth from within the bacteria to discover the ratio. In other words, they're assessing their odds to determine which replication cycle they should enter. Charles has continued looking at other bacteriophage communications and has been the first to find a bacteriophage with two different communication signals. These findings can translate to therapies by using bacteriophages to control bacteria. For example, if phages can signal in such a way to prevent bacteria from producing spores, scientists could control certain bacterial infection rates. As Charles says, "who gets to decide when it is time to sporulate? We used to think it was the bacteria, but, in fact, maybe it is the phages manipulating its host's biology . . . like a puppet master. " For more, see his lab's website: Team AIRE. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1472 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: One Big Pill Charles was working hard outside building a new sidewalk with large cement paver bricks. He was making good headway but was growing very weary as he goes back to his pickup truck to carry the final 100-pound paver to put in in place. As Charles picks up the paver from the bed of the truck is slips from his hands and falls on his right foot. He was sure that it was probably broken, and as he took his shoe off, he noticed that his foot was swelling up quickly. Sally, his wife, was not home at the time, so Charles hobbles to the driver seat of his pickup truck and heads to the Emergency Room. After waiting for 30 minutes, the pain was almost more than Charles could stand. Finally, he was called back to a room where Doctor Smith carefully examines Charles's foot and then took an Xray. Dr. Smith checks the Xray, and there were no broken bones. Dr. Smith came back and said, well Charles, the good news is that the foot is not broken, but there is damage to some muscles and ligaments. Dr. Smith hands Charles a pill big enough to choke a horse. He turned to Charles and said, “I'll send the nurse in with some water.” Charles waited another 30 minutes with his foot hurting more all the time. He finally loses patience. Charles hobbles out to a nearby drinking fountain, forces the pill down his throat, and slurps down an abundance of water until the pill clears his throat. He hobbles back into the examining room. Just then, the nurse comes in with a large bucket of warm water, she looks at Charles and says, “Okay, after the tablet dissolves, soak that foot for about 20 minutes.”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “I tripped over a box of Kleenex this morning and thought I had broken my ankle. Thankfully, it was just soft tissue damage.” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2010%3A15&version=NLT (Romans 10:15) And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1471 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at...
This episode is guaranteed to leave you feeling motivated! This conversation was definitely in my top 3 of the year, and I think you may agree! Charles is an incredible speaker who was once the 6th fastest man on Earth until a 99% tear of his quad sent him packing his bags to move back home to live with his mom, unsure of what life would look like next. He went from feeling like he went from the top of the world to the bottom, to reframing that perspective and starting to share his story and help others through that journey. As Charles became more vulnerable in sharing his story, others began to open themselves up to him as well, and he has now spoke on several stages, founded Thrive events, and created the Thrive planner! As Charles joined this team, all seemed to be working perfectly. The team really got Agile, and they were following the ceremonies and producing high-quality software. But something was off. With time it became clear that there was a gap between the team and the stakeholders. Finally, the team realized that their project was about to be canceled. What happened? How could this team’s amazing work be canceled? The lessons Charles learned from that story are a critical warning for all of us. Listen in to learn what happened, and why you should start looking at your own team (even if successful) to look for possible early signals of the same pattern. I get asked this question quite often: How do I find my passion? I answer this using some philosophies by Jay Shetty, Charles Cooley and Simon Sinek. Some of the answers lie within the amount of noise that surrounds us and how much we are capable of hearing our own inner voice. I speak of the echo chambers that we are stuck in and how we are surrounded by like-minded people that feed us the same information every day, making us question what we are passionate about every single day. As Charles cooley says "I am not what I think I am, I am not what you think I am, I am what I think you think I am". This I believe summarizes how we believe and how we think, and how we should give our lives an objective look to be able to make change.

If you’re wary of attending the latest splatter fest at your local multiplex and seeking a kinder, gentler Halloween season entertainment, Napa’s Lucky Penny Productions brings you Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, running through November 4. It’s an old-fashioned ghost story laden with Coward’s acerbic wit and charm. Author Charles Condomine (Tim Kniffin) is researching the occult world for his next novel. He’s invited a local medium, Madame Arcati (Karen Pinomaki), to conduct a séance in his home. Charles is convinced she’s a charlatan, but Arcati manages to call forth the spectral presence of his late first wife Elvira (Sydney Schwindt). As Charles is the only one who can see or hear Elvira, Charles’ current wife Ruth (Kirstin Pieschke) thinks he’s going quite mad. Soon convinced of Elvira’s presence, Ruth finds herself in a battle with Elvira over their husband. At first terrified with the situation, Charles actually begins to take some delight in the circumstances and starts to adapt to living with two wives – even if one is dead. Elvira goes about scheming to get Charles to join her on the ‘other side’ while Ruth seeks out Madame Arcati to help rid her of the troublesome spirit. That’s easier said than done. Director Barry Martin brings a light touch and a good cast to this production. Kniffin is solid as the initially flustered but soon rolling-with-the-punches Charles who, after closer examination, is really quite a cad. He’s the perfect vehicle to deliver some classic Coward lines in a classic Coward manner. Schwindt is a lot of fun as the devilish Elvira and gets a major assist from makeup designer Brette Bartolucci. Small, intimate spaces like Lucky Penny can be a test for makeup designs as the audience’s proximity to the stage can make the artificiality abundantly clear. In this case, Bartolucci’s makeup and April George’s lighting design work really well together. As Madame Arcati, Pinomaki has the showiest role (it won Angela Lansbury her fourth Tony for the 2009 revival) and garners big laughs with her physicality. Festooned in costume designer Barbara McFadden’s colorful accoutrements, Pinomaki earns those laughs by playing the character straight. Her visual outlandishness and other spectral bits are nice counterparts to the dry verbal humor for which Coward is best known and that this cast delivers well. The play creaks a bit, but in a day when stage pyrotechnics often overwhelm a show, it’s nice to be reminded that the words are what really matter. ‘Blithe Spirit’ plays through November 4 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. The Thursday performance is at 7pm; Friday and Saturday’s are at 8pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to luckypennynapa.com

Today I'm joined by Charles Jennings from the 702010 Institute. As Charles tells us, he is passionate about performance, through learning. I've been a fan-boy of the 702010 model for quite some time, and it has really made a profound impact on the way that I boost my performance, and they way I am able to help others - in particular, you the valued listener. In fact, 702010 is a cornerstone design input to Safety on Tap Connected - which is our way of supporting you not just to grow, but to accelerate your growth. I'll tell you more about that after the chat with Charles, along with my special offer to you. Before we begin - what does 702010 actually mean? It represents the research that suggests we learn most of what we learn in real life - 70% through experience, 20% through social exposure, and only a measly 10% of what we learn comes from education. We'll dig deeper on that in the discussion, so let's go! Here's the links Charles mentioned, you should check these out! Who are your avatars? What would they expect of you? In what ways are the decisions you’re making today leading you closer to earning support tomorrow? Chapter 3: Transition from Federal Prison to a Halfway House By 3:00 am, on August 12, 2012, I was up and ready to start my exercise inside the federal prison in Atwater, California. It would be my last day locked inside of a prison. I had 9,135 days of imprisonment behind me, just over 25 years. Carole was scheduled to pick me up at 9:00 am. Together we’d drive to a halfway house in the Tenderloin District of downtown San Francisco, where I’d serve the next 365 days—completing my 9,500-day journey as a federal prisoner. I walked through gates that separated the minimum-security camp from the penitentiary so officers could process me out. A staff member handed me a few hundred dollars in cash from my account and indicated that I’d receive a check for the remainder. That was it. I walked outside and met Carole. She wore a yellow dress with a yellow ribbon tied around her waist. With tears of joy in her eyes she hugged me and we drove off the penitentiary grounds, eager to start our journey together. Although we were together for the first time, we weren’t really free. Within three hours I had to be in the San Francisco halfway house. Since it would take three hours to make the drive, we wouldn’t have time for diversions. We wanted to be together, of course. The time crunch, however, dictated that we needed to get on the road. I didn’t want to jeopardize possibilities for home visits or weekend passes that I knew the halfway house could issue. So we resisted the urge to stop for alone time and drove straight to the halfway house. iPhone: Once we got in the car, Carole passed me an iPhone. When I went to prison, this advanced technology didn’t exist. I’d never sent an email, never watched a YouTube video, never accessed the Internet. Everything about technology fascinated me. While in prison, I frequently dreamed about the Internet, wondering what it was all about. I read many books and articles so that I could understand the power of this communication tool. I even took the initiative to participate indirectly. Since the late 1990s I had a web presence. I persuaded people in my expanding support network to build websites for me. They published my articles and they’d send me screen shots. But there wasn’t any real way to experience the web without computer access. Reading about the Internet was like reading about playing tennis. Until an individual could access the Internet, he really didn’t know how to appreciate technology. When Carole gave me my iPhone, I got my first chance. As Carole drove, I played around with the phone and made some calls to family and friends. Carole and I spoke about our plans. Goals had carried me through the 25 years inside and I pledged to continue living a values-based, goal-oriented life. During the final year in the halfway house, I pledged to sow seeds that would allow us to start my career. I intended to: Create products and services that would help more people who experienced the criminal justice system emerge successfully. Create a business model that would help more formerly incarcerated people transition into the job market. Create campaigns that would spread more awareness on why it made sense to reform our criminal justice system. I wanted to think innovatively, in ways that would inspire more people to pursue paths that would lead to success upon release. But first things first. During my year in the halfway house, I needed to establish myself. Fortunately, I had begun making plans long before I left prison. I had a job waiting. I had money in the bank. I had an extensive support network. Further, with the different books that I wrote while I served my sentence, I had a product line to launch. My books included: Inside: Life Behind Bars in AmericaEarning Freedom: Conquering a 45-Year TermPrison! My 8,344th DayTriumph! The Straight-A Guide For Conquering Imprisonment and Preparing for ReentrySuccess! The Straight-A Guide for At-Risk Youth I didn’t write books that were masterpieces of English literature. Rather, they served the purpose. They would help people understand prisons, the people they hold, and strategies for growing through prison successfully. I hoped they would build credibility for me as I ventured into the world to start my career. My intentions were to use the books as tools. I could build a business, or income streams showing all that masterminds taught me. Anyone could use those same strategies to reject negativity or overcome challenges. The message was universal, valuable to anyone and everyone. If those strategies could empower me through decades in prison, others could use them to achieve more as well. If you’re in prison, I urge you to think about steps you can take now. Think about options that exist to influence the people you’re going to meet in the future. The Halfway House: The halfway house in San Francisco was easy to navigate. After decades in federal prison, everything seemed easy. I was assigned to a two-man room and I could use the iPhone to connect with the world. I arrived on a Monday and met with Charles, my case manager on a Thursday. While doing his intake paperwork, Charles commented on the length of time that I’d served. He suggested that I participate in counseling sessions to help me acclimate. I was prepared. I brought all of the books that I’d written in prison, showed him support letters that I’d received, a resume I wrote, and presented him with a letter showing that I had a job waiting. The letter confirmed I could start working as soon as the halfway house authorized me to begin. “How did you get all of this done while you were in prison?” As Charles flipped through the books, I could sense that the tangible work I presented influenced his perception. Instead of seeing me as the ex-convict who served a quarter century and needed counseling, he treated me as a man. He said that he would give me as much liberty as I needed. I was excused from having to waste time in the counseling classes. Instead, I could continue executing a plan for success that I was able to articulate to my case manager.
