• Audio Podcast of this Rosary is Available Here Now! Friends of the Rosary: Today, we are praying the Holy Rosary in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, an area avoided by tourists due to its reputation for drug dealing and violent crime. The Tenderloin is bordered by Geary to the north, Market Street to the south, Taylor Street to the east, and Van Ness to the west. Despite being advised against it, we felt compelled to see firsthand what was happening in this area. We prayed the Joyful Mysteries, asking the Blessed Mother for help and guidance for these poor people, abandoned by society. As you'll observe, we went unnoticed while praying with the Rosary in one hand and a cellphone camera in the other. These individuals are not criminals or dangerous; many are struggling with the effects of fentanyl and other harmful opioids, simply trying to survive while homeless. We recited a heartbreaking Rosary, reflecting on our collective failure to care for our fellow human beings. The homeless and drug addicts in the Tenderloin are enduring an agonizing struggle during their time on earth, suffering an extreme purgatory. We hope and pray that they come first in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Lord Jesus and His Mother Mary watch over us, saddened by the situation, urging us to respond with merciful love, as the human family we are. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Could you imagine the classic jazz scene without its late-night ambiance? This week, we're grappling with this very thought as we explore the changes at San Francisco's illustrious Black Cat Jazz Supper Club. With street crime shaking up the Tenderloin District, the club is shifting its business hours to protect its patrons - a decision that has the jazz community buzzing. Operations director Jason Moore shares with us an insider's perspective on the daily struggles they face, the rash of thefts and assaults, and the difficult choice to alter their opening hours. The second half of our conversation takes us to Philadelphia, the city facing a unique challenge as the pandemic ebbs. The difficulty of returning to work, the potential tax burden on employees, and the decrease in summer tours has many reconsidering their options. As we discuss the Black Cat's bold move to change hours, we can't ignore that it's merely a Band-Aid solution for the underlying issue - the surge in crime. This raises a pressing question for businesses across the city: Should they brave their return, or is it safer to stay put? Strap in for a deep-dive into the realities of running a business in our current climate.Support the show

If you thought the city by the Bay was on a highway to heaven, think again. San Francisco seems to be taking a detour through the valleys of Sodom and Gomorrah, according to this columnist from Hot Air. Shockingly, it seems that the residents of this once-proud city are more concerned about the plight of their "unhoused" drug addicts than they are about the hardscrabble taxpayers who are footing the bill for this tragic social experiment.Despite the soul-tugging weepy articles from the San Francisco Standard about the hard-luck stories of the tent-dwelling denizens, the reality is quite different. According to a recent report from the San Francisco Police Department, just a meager 7% of the individuals arrested on drug-related charges actually hail from the city itself. It's as though San Francisco has turned into a hot tourist destination for drug-addicted transients, eager to take advantage of the city's lenient drug policies and the plentiful supply of cheap narcotics. Unfortunately for the law-abiding citizens, the city's lax approach to crime seems to have turned it into a free-for-all for thieves and burglars, forcing more businesses to go cashless and exacerbating the problem. What's more, it's not just the crime that's turning people's stomachs - it's the literal filth. The city streets are now home to an interactive 'poop map', a truly modern marvel illustrating the locations of reported incidents of human defecation. Yes, you read that correctly - the sidewalks of San Francisco have been turned into an open-air lavatory by the city's 'unhoused' residents. If that isn't a wake-up call, I don't know what is. So next time you're reading another teary-eyed puff piece about the tough times facing the homeless, remember: in San Francisco, the only thing going down the drain faster than the city itself is its residents' sense of decorum and decency.#SanFrancisco #UnhousedReality #UrbanDeclineSupport the show

In a hilarious surprise act at San Francisco's Masonic Auditorium, Dave Chappelle didn't hold back his thoughts on the City by the Bay.And boy, were they far from flattering."What the heck happened to this place?" Chappelle exclaimed to the bewildered crowd. He went on to tear into the city's homeless crisis, sharing a rather "crappy" incident he witnessed at an Indian restaurant a few nights earlier—apparently, a gentleman decided it was the perfect time and place for a public restroom break. Classy!San Francisco's Tenderloin District has always had a reputation for homelessness and drug use, but according to Chappelle, the entire city has transformed into a Tenderloin paradise. He hilariously described San Francisco as a mashup of the TV show "Glee" and a zombie movie, envisioning a city in desperate need of a superhero. "Y'all need a Batman!" he jokingly exclaimed.Once upon a time, Chappelle considered San Francisco his second home, even using it as his personal ATM when he needed some quick cash during the early days of his career. But alas, it seems his love affair with the city has fizzled out.And he's not alone.According to a recent poll by The San Francisco Chronicle, a whopping 70 percent of the city's residents agree that homelessness is among the top three problems plaguing the Bay Area. Ouch!Homelessness in San Francisco has skyrocketed by 35 percent since 2019, making it the hotspot for wandering souls. With approximately 38,000 individuals homeless on any given night, California seems to be a magnet for the roofless population. But fear not! Mayor London Breed has unveiled a master plan, backed by a jaw-dropping $600 million proposal, to tackle this pressing issue. Though, where all that money is mysteriously disappearing to is still a question for the ages. It's like the city's own magic trick!Support the show

San Francisco's in the Tenderloin District has closed less than a year after opening to the public. The site, opened by San Francisco Mayor London Breed earlier this year as a way to tackle the city's ongoing drug crisis, cost about $22million to operate. The Tenderloin Center, an addiction services site was often referred to as a 'safe place' for addicts to 'get high without getting robbed,' according to one person who used the center. In the first four months of the center's opening, the open-air drug market also referred just 18 people of the more than 23,000 it welcomed.Overall less than ended in a 'completed linkage' to behavioral health programs.City leaders, including Breed, now say the site was a 'temporary solution' offered up as a way to avoid the more than 640 overdose deaths San Francisco saw in 2021.Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople

Do we REALLY have to pray for Hunter and Ashley Biden?Episode 201 - Hour 2 Pray For Hunter And Ashley Biden

THE THESIS: Hunter and Ashley Biden have been broken and we must pray for them. The Biden siblings share some serious problems, apparent sex addiction (which Ashley appears to have discussed in therapy) and the strange habit of leaving their darkest life secrets laying around where people can find them. That Hunter Biden has been selling White House access to fuel his twin addictions is a clear and vital national security crisis, that these two humans have these twin set of issues is the sign of a deeply sick family life that is also a national security concern, but also a call for us to pray for them. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Matthew 5:43-48 Love for Enemies 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Acts 9: 1-19 Saul's Conversion 9 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. THE NEWS & COMMENT: Some good news, perhaps?  EXCLUSIVE: Judge rules to unseal dozens of documents about Ghislaine Maxwell's personal affairs, including those that reveal her and Jeffrey Epstein's relationship with the Clinton. But, what about Hunter Biden?  [AUDIO] - Senator Ron Johnson: Hunter Biden's laptop is a treasure trove of info that must be investigated. But unfortunately we don't have equal justice in our country. Instead, we have a two-tiered justice system – one for Democrats and their powerful friends (and family) and one for the rest of America. This is just so horrific to read. We must pray for Hunter and Ashlely Biden--that God will call them to Himself--and we need to understand the pure Hell that is in the White House.  Bidens are as dysfunctional as the Kennedys — and protected by the press Hunter Biden reportedly called Jill an ‘entitled c–t' in texts [AUDIO] -  Poor Biden: Morning Joe Crew Whines That Dems Are Not Touting Biden Enough Doesn't it make sense, then, that a Party who chooses that man is Figurehead, has groups like this threatening Supreme Court justices everywhere they go? God loves His creation but loves His children with a fatherly eternal love. Remember Jesus owns words to Nicodemus…. Jesus loves us but only if we repent and believe upon Him. John 3:18-21 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On a hot weekend night in August 1966 trans women fought back against police harassment at Compton's Cafeteria in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. Although the Compton's riot didn't spark a national movement the way Stonewall would three years later, it did have an effect, leading to the creation of support services for transgender people in San Francisco, and a reduction in police brutality against the trans community. Joining me to discuss the riot, its causes, and its aftermath, is historian Dr. Susan Stryker, co-writer and co-director of the Emmy-winning 2005 documentary, Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria, and author of several books, including Transgender History: The Roots of Today's Revolution. A California appeals court ruled against an effort by San Francisco to ban four suspected drug dealers from a 50-square-block area in a city neighborhood rife with drug dealing and drug use.The ruling issued Friday is part of a case that started in 2020 when San Francisco sued 28 alleged drug dealers who frequent the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods to try and clean up the area that has seen the city's largest number of overdose deaths. Then San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said the lawsuits, if approved in California Superior Court, would prevent the alleged dealers from entering that area of downtown.LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos everyday. https://bit.ly/3KBUDSK

It's an election year in California, and conservative Democrats are working to distance themselves from progressive movements with a renewed vigor for tough-on-crime policies. As a result, they're finding themselves with some far-right bedfellows. In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed has issued yet another police occupation of the Tenderloin District. After a high-profile looting of high-end retail spaces in Union Square last November, the mayor flooded the space with officers for three weeks, to the tune of $2.4 million in police overtime expenses. As Chronicle columnist Justin Phillips noted, officials didn't respond with anywhere near the same fire just days before, when shootings took place in the city's poor neighborhoods.   Rather than fund statistically promising initiatives to curb gun violence--such as Oakland's Operation Ceasefire--conservative Democrats facing reelection throughout the state are bending to the will of affluent donors and working to bolster police forces. This comes after two years of George Floyd demonstrations urging politicians to rethink public safety.   These same Democrats find themselves in concert with far-right organizations pushing a national initiative to recall progressive officials (such as San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin) who dare to rethink public safety in the most incarcerated nation on the planet.   The result of California Democrats siphoning funds from poor, predominantly Black and brown communities, then using that money to further militarize the police force and incarcerate more impoverished people, is simple:   The contradictions of capitalism drive deeper into California, and fascists throughout the state are emboldened to make increasingly audacious plays for power.   "Third Way" Republicans like the Lincoln Project's Mike Madrid can write all the op-eds they want about the dangers of the fascist creep in California. But when they push to increase funding for a police force known widely to work alongside white supremacists, they are very much part of the problem.   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am. CalCare is dead; May establishment Dems fall with it

On Monday California's Assembly was slated to vote on AB1400, which would have paved the way for the Golden State to become the first in the union to adopt single-payer healthcare. Progressives this week hinted that they weren't messing around on CalCare, and would block any state party endorsement for legislators who vote against it. This meant they would not be able to use state party money in their 2022 campaigns. But in a devastating turn of events, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, who authored the bill, decided not to bring it to a vote. This devastated advocates such as California's nurses and the state party's progressive caucus, forcing them to ask how they might make the establishment Democrats pay for this horrific about-face on the people of California. Will this be a much needed moment showing progressives and moderates within the party just how little they have in common? Speaking of campaigns: Despite the California GOP crowing on Fox 40 about their grand intentions in 2022, last year's failed governor recall election shattered any dreams they may have had for the state's executive office. With that said, we've got two very interesting statewide races to watch. First, a Dem-on-Dem battle for the state's commissioner seat between incumbent Ricardo Lara and challenger Marc Levine.   We've also got an interesting race bringing the "tough on crime" issue into view: Attorney General Rob Bonta, considered more progressive than most in the capital as the state's top cop, will be challenged by Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, a Republican-turned-No-Party-Preference candidate known for her draconian measures against Sacramento residents during her reign.   Also along the "tough on crime" vein, Democratic mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, has called a state of emergency for her city's Tenderloin District. Is it making a difference? Or is this simply a pivot to the right for a mayor currying favor with her city's millionaires and billionaires who are fed up with progressive approaches to crime?   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am. Today we take this illustrious train to the land of Rice A Roni, the Golden Gate Bridge and those son of bitch basketball Warriors...San Francisco, California. Considered the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. San Francisco is the 16th most populous city in the United States, and the fourth most populous in California, with 881,549 residents as of 2019.    Between January 1974 and September 1975, the LGBTQ community of the Castro District and surrounding city of San Francisco were terrorized by yet, another serial murderer. Still trembling in fear from the previous horrors of the Zodiac killer, tentatively responsible for over 30 deaths and the Zebra murders, which were a string of racially motivated murders committed by a small group of black Muslims that took the lives of at least 15 people. Needless to say, citizens of the area were locking their doors and looking over their shoulders, knowing that evil could be behind every corner or hiding in every shadow.   The gay community already faced plenty of unfortunate danger without the added prospect of being targeted by a fucking serial killer. Even in the comparatively welcoming environment of the city’s Castro neighborhood, being outed in the mid-1970s meant risking stigmatization, injury, and even death, owing to antigay sentiments prevalent across the United States. (Harvey Milk’s election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was four years away. If you’re unaware, Harvey Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay elected official in the history of California who was assassinated on November 27th, 1978 along with Mayor George Mascone by a piece of shit former San Francisco board of supervisors member who I won’t mention his name because fuck that guy! He did commit suicide in 1985 after serving only 5 years in prison. Dickhead.)   Fear of such repercussions led three men who survived encounters with the Doodler to refuse to cooperate with police. One, reportedly, was a European diplomat (according to the Chronicle, he was stabbed six times before fleeing). Published reports about survivors also mention a “nationally known” entertainer and an individual who quickly skipped town and declined further contact with law enforcement. Four decades later, the identities of these men still remain unknown.   While the Doodler is thought to have been active between January 1974 and June 1975, there has been some confusion over his total number of victims. In 1976, reporter Maitland Zane made blunt reference to the number of unsolved homicides of gay men at the time—17 had occurred in 1975 alone—in an article for the San Francisco Chronicle titled “The Gay Killers.” Owing to this tragically large number, some reports have suggested that the Doodler’s true body count may be as high as 14.   In the five cases officially tied to the Doodler, the victims died from numerous stab wounds. Each body was found in a park or by the beach. Following the discovery of the Doodler’s fifth victim, Harald Gullberg, in June 1975, the killings seemed to stop.   During the mid-1970s, the overall homicide rate in San Francisco was more than double what it is today. In 1974, there were 129 homicides in the city. The following year, there were 132. Needless to say, the SFPD’s homicide detectives were busy, and the Doodler wasn’t even the only serial killer on their radar. At the time of Cavanaugh’s death, the city was enduring the infamous Zebra murders, and arrests were still three months from being carried out. A murderer that would draw a sketch or doodle of men in order to entice them to lower their guard, was seemingly hunting homosexual men from the area. This prolific killer ended the lives of 5 confirmed men with up to 14 potential deaths under their belt, in total. All of the victims were found within 4 miles of one another and all within 18 months. So who was the Doodler, aka The Black Doodler? No one knows for sure and may never. This is what makes this story one of the most horrific.    THE VICTIMS   January 27th, 1974  On the morning of January 27, 1974, at approximately 1:25 a.m., police dispatch received a phone call reporting the discovery of a corpse at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach.   “I believe there might be a dead person,” the caller said in a calm, male-sounding voice before declining to give their name and hanging up.   When officers arrived on the scene 30 minutes later, they found the body of 50-year-old Gerald Cavanaugh. He’d been stabbed 16 times.   Over the course of the next year and a half, five victims—all white gay men—would be linked to the serial killer dubbed the Doodler. Despite its childish quality, the Doodler’s nickname is a haunting reference to the killer’s reported fondness for sketching cartoons of the men he’d meet at bars in San Francisco’s Castro district, then lure somewhere more remote with the promise of sex. June 25th 1974 A woman walking by Spreckles Lake happened upon the body of 27 year old female impersonator and local area comedian, Joseph “Jae” Stevens. Stevens worked at Finnochios, a club and bar that was started as a speakeasy in 1929 and was located on Stockton Street. Authorities believe that Stevens had possibly driven his killer to the lake area and one report claims that the murder had taken the car to flee crime scene, only to crash the vehicle into the side of a house, forcing the them to abscond from the accident by foot. Stevens was stabbed 5 times and was presumably dragged roughly ten feet into the brush.   July 7th, 1974 Walking her dog “Moondance” around the foot of Lincoln Bay at Ocean Beach, Tauba Weiss noticed what seemed to be the lifeless body of a man, 31 year old Claus A. Christmann, a German citizen who had worked for the tire company Michelin. Christmann was married with children, though they did not accompany him to America. When his body was found, he was wearing a tan leather jacket, heeled ankle boots, a white Italian shirt and orange bikini briefs, with his pants unzipped and pockets emptied, other than a single tube of makeup. He was left wearing three rings on his hands, including a gold wedding band. Christmann was stabbed at least 15 times with three of the wounds slashing his throat. The coroner report states that it was “ In a manner which seemed as though the assailant had attempted to decapitate the deceased.” Inspector David Toschi, a 20 year veteran of the department, described to the Sentinel, that the murder was “one of the most vicious stabbings he has ever seen. (Toschi also investigated the Zodiac murders, which are also still unsolved.)   May 12th, 1975 Nearly a year after the murder of Claus Christmann, the body of 32 year old registered nurse and former Navy medical corpsman in the Vietnam War, Frederick Elmer Capin, was found.  His corpse was discovered by a hiker, walking by a sand dune, not far from a highway that runs parallel to Ocean Beach. Capin was a tall, thin man approximately 6 foot tall and at 148 pounds. The coroner's report states that he had been stabbed in the aorta and heart and that he had blood smeared on his shoes, hands and torso. It was also noted that there were marks in the sand leading to the body that “indicating that he had been dragged approximately 20 feet.” Notably, Capin had received a commendation medal for saving four men under fire while serving in Vietnam.   June 4th, 1975 While hiking by the Lincoln Park Golf course, the body of 66 year old Swedish immigrant, Harald Gullberg was found ten yards from a nearby trail. Gullberg was a sailor who had travelled to numerous harbors, including Boston, Puerto Vita, Cuba, Shanghai, Melbourne, San Luis Obispo, Yokohama and Liverpool, according to immigration records. When the body was found, Gullberg’s pants were unzipped and he was not wearing undergarments. Some speculate they were taken by the killer. He had been slashed across the throat and due to bug activity, the coroner indicated that the body had been deceased for approximately 2 weeks. This was the oldest and assumably, the Doodler’s last victim.   In the time around the murders, three men had come forward claiming that they too had been assaulted by the supposed Doodler. Reports claim that one of these men was a “well known entertainer”, with speculations of news outlets pointing to actor Richard Chamberlain, singer and pianist Johnnie Ray and actor Rock Hudson although police have confirmed that it was, in fact, NOT Rock Hudson and that the entertainer is indeed still alive. Of the three, Chamberlain would be the only surviving person. Due to the victims understandably wanting to keep their sexuality private, none of the men would come forward, publicly, nor assist the police in their investigation. LGBTQ rights activist and politician Harvey Milk had defended their refusals by saying “I understand their position. I respect the pressure society has put on them.”    THE SUSPECTS 5 months after Harald Gullberg’s body was found, the San Francisco Police Department released a sketch composite of an african/american male between the ages of 19 and 22 standing between 5’10” and 6 foot tall, with a slim build, wearing a Navy style watch cap. The profile of the man was of a quiet man, possibly an art student, from an upper middle class background.    In Jan 1976, a man had been arrested at a Tenderloin District bar after a patron had called the police claiming that a man was inside that matched the composite and he was offering to draw sketches of other patrons. New reports claimed that when the police arrived and arrested him, that he was carrying a butcher knife and a sketch pad. Police questioned him, however they did not have evidence and without the assistance of the witnesses they could not prosecute him. He was booked for carrying a concealed weapon and, after he attacked homicide inspectors during an interrogation, charged with aggravated assault. Police came under fire because the community didn’t think that they were helping. As Gay sex was illegal until Jan of 1976 which lead to complete mistrust of the police department    In the last few years the case has had a resurgence. Police are looking at it with fresh eyes and have been able to locate the European diplomate, however they cannot find the entertainer  DNA has been submitted – no word in results yet  In Feb 2019 police offered a $100,000 reward in info that leads to the identification and prosecution of the killer  They have also released an age progression composite sketch of what the man would likely look like today.  They are also looking for a man who called into dispatch about one of the bodies found. Here is the audio from that phone call.    (*audio?*)    Police think that the killer may have been seeing a psychiatrist in the East Bay area with the name Priest and are currently seeking information about that doctor as well.  Anyone with information can call the San Francisco police at 1-415-575-4444.     Ace’s Depot http://www.aces-depot.com   BECOME A PRODUCER! http://www.patreon.com/themidnighttrainpodcast   Find The Midnight Train Podcast: www.themidnighttrainpodcast.com www.facebook.com/themidnighttrainpodcast www.twitter.com/themidnighttrainpc www.instagram.com/themidnighttrainpodcast www.discord.com/themidnighttrainpodcast www.tiktok.com/themidnighttrainp   And wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.   Subscribe to our official YouTube channel: OUR YOUTUBE

Welcome to the 100th episode of Giving Back Insights!  Insights is our solo show to celebrate how our guests and their charities serve others, explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and connect. Today we're talking about Miracle Messages in San Francisco –  amazing work, amazing people!  Enjoy today’s episode and keep your comments and feedback coming.ent. Enjoy! Key Takeaways: To start off, thank you for being with me on Insights.  We always have great guests on our Monday shows, people who are doing amazing things for people in their communities.  The Giving Back Insights episodes are a way to share what I’m learning along the way in the hope of continuing the conversation about how you and I can make a difference in people’s lives.  Sometimes the Insights shows veer toward my own journey of creating a life of purpose and meaning, and I appreciate you hanging with me and the terrific comments I’ve received. Much mahalo to everyone. The impact of an emergency or terrible circumstances is always felt most deeply when it’s close to home.  When it’s personal, it’s our own story. It’s also when we’re most likely to jump in and get busy ourselves, whether it’s donating, volunteering, or participating in some way that will help solve the problem. On Thursday I joined Kevin Adler and some members of the Miracle Messages crew on a Street Walk through San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.  It’s a weekly event to hand out food, engage in conversations, and help people reconnect with their loved ones. That happy fella on today’s cover is Brian, and his t shirt is the slogan of Miracle Messages: Everyone is someone’s somebody. #StreetWalks @MiracleMessages The Tenderloin is a rough area; there are lots of homeless people, lots of drug use, and lots of mental health issues.  It is also, as Kevin reminded us, one of MANY neighborhoods across the US struggling with homelessness. Over 536,000 people in America went to sleep that night without a shelter.  The challenge is to move beyond the number and the stereotypes and to remember that each of our unsheltered neighbors is a mother, father, son, daughter, niece, nephew, uncle and aunt.  That’s what makes an issue, a problem, a cause --- important to us personally and keeps us engaged. All of us came to Street Walk on Thursday to remember that “they” are us.  Each of us came in from different backgrounds and for different reasons to serve where those in need are at.  Some of us were challenged by the harsh reality of life on the streets, some us challenged in our beliefs. All of us came with the conviction that everyone is someone’s somebody. Brian and Kevin did a fine job keeping us all safe, helped as much by people on the street who know them and Miracle Messages’ mission as their own presence and direction.  We passed out food, engaged in conversations, played some music, and recorded videos for a couple of people who want to reconnect with their loved ones. Imagine being apart from family for 10, 20, even 30 years.  Miracle Messages has fostered 150+ reconnections and are going strong with over 80% positive reunions. Listening to each of the night’s crew talk about their experience at our debrief after our walk, I felt a deep gratitude for what I have in my life.  That I have an abundance and can share SOMETHING with someone who needs a hand up is a blessing. I also felt a profound sense of appreciation for each person who came out that night to support Miracle Messages.  Each of them came to serve and make a difference in someone’s somebody. I wanted to connect them to the impact they have so I shared a short text between my brother Tom and me that we exchanged that very night.  A simple “Hello” and setting up a breakfast get together. So normal, so absolutely mundane, right? I hadn’t seen Tom in over 20 years until Miracle Messages reconnected us.  I missed him terribly, and I cherish every moment we’re together. Brett, Nim, Brian, Katie Beverly, Emme, Nancy, Fernanda, Jen Kelly, Kevin and all the staff, volunteers and supporters of Miracle Messages: Thank you for giving me my brother back.  He’s my somebody. Special thanks to Salesforce for providing a wonderful venue for Miracle Messages’ first annual Un-gala!  Special shout out to Kevin Adler for kicking off the donations by raising his paddle to fully support reuniting a family.  Major kudos to Union Square for their new partnership with Miracle Messages to reunite our unsheltered neighbors with their loved ones.  HUGE thanks and love to Nancy for putting me and my bro back together. To Kevin, Jessica and all the staff, volunteers, Detectives, Ambassadors and supporters of Miracle Messages, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness. Sometimes life without a kitchen leads to the most unexpected hidden kitchen of all—the George Foreman Grill. How immigrants and homeless people without official kitchens use the George Foreman Grill, hidden crock pots, and secret hot plates to make a meal and a home. Featuring an interview with boxing champion and grill-master, George Foreman. So many immigrants, homeless people and others of limited means living in single-room occupancies (SROs) have no kitchens, no legal or official place to cook. To get a hot meal, or eat traditional foods from the countries they’ve left behind, they have to sneak a kind of kitchen into their places. Crock pots, hot plates, microwaves and toaster ovens hidden under the bed. And now, the appliance that comes in so many colors it looks like a modern piece of furniture: the George Foreman Grill. We had never considered such a hidden kitchen. So we called him. George Foreman talks about growing up hungry and violent, about his his time in the Job Corps, about cooking for his friends and his work with kids. “Feed them,” he says. “Hunger makes you angry.” And we contacted the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. They put us in touch with Jeffrey Newton who has been homeless or in shelters most all his life, from boy’s homes, to reformatories, to prison by age 17. Then he moved out on the streets, where every day he goes “trailblazing” — looking for food, shelter, work, the resources he needs to make it through the day. Jeffry learned to cook from his grandmother. He feels an urge to cook, especially for other people — under the overpass on Chicago’s Wacker Drive; on a George Foreman Grill plugged into a power pole; with a hot clothing iron to toast a grilled cheese sandwich. Pat Sherman lived for quite some time in SROs with no kitchen, where cooking was forbidden. She now has a home and works in Glide’s Memorial Church in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Sherman was quite ingenious when it came to cooking. Her Crock-Pot doubled as a flower pot — nothing that would arouse suspicion. When nobody was around to check, she would slow-cook her beans while she went to school, then come home to a hot meal.

Who are your avatars? What would they expect of you? In what ways are the decisions you’re making today leading you closer to earning support tomorrow?   Chapter 3: Transition from Federal Prison to a Halfway House By 3:00 am, on August 12, 2012, I was up and ready to start my exercise inside the federal prison in Atwater, California. It would be my last day locked inside of a prison. I had 9,135 days of imprisonment behind me, just over 25 years. Carole was scheduled to pick me up at 9:00 am. Together we’d drive to a halfway house in the Tenderloin District of downtown San Francisco, where I’d serve the next 365 days—completing my 9,500-day journey as a federal prisoner. I walked through gates that separated the minimum-security camp from the penitentiary so officers could process me out. A staff member handed me a few hundred dollars in cash from my account and indicated that I’d receive a check for the remainder. That was it. I walked outside and met Carole. She wore a yellow dress with a yellow ribbon tied around her waist. With tears of joy in her eyes she hugged me and we drove off the penitentiary grounds, eager to start our journey together. Although we were together for the first time, we weren’t really free. Within three hours I had to be in the San Francisco halfway house. Since it would take three hours to make the drive, we wouldn’t have time for diversions. We wanted to be together, of course. The time crunch, however, dictated that we needed to get on the road. I didn’t want to jeopardize possibilities for home visits or weekend passes that I knew the halfway house could issue. So we resisted the urge to stop for alone time and drove straight to the halfway house.   iPhone: Once we got in the car, Carole passed me an iPhone. When I went to prison, this advanced technology didn’t exist. I’d never sent an email, never watched a YouTube video, never accessed the Internet. Everything about technology fascinated me. While in prison, I frequently dreamed about the Internet, wondering what it was all about. I read many books and articles so that I could understand the power of this communication tool. I even took the initiative to participate indirectly. Since the late 1990s I had a web presence. I persuaded people in my expanding support network to build websites for me. They published my articles and they’d send me screen shots. But there wasn’t any real way to experience the web without computer access. Reading about the Internet was like reading about playing tennis. Until an individual could access the Internet, he really didn’t know how to appreciate technology. When Carole gave me my iPhone, I got my first chance. As Carole drove, I played around with the phone and made some calls to family and friends. Carole and I spoke about our plans. Goals had carried me through the 25 years inside and I pledged to continue living a values-based, goal-oriented life. During the final year in the halfway house, I pledged to sow seeds that would allow us to start my career. I intended to: Create products and services that would help more people who experienced the criminal justice system emerge successfully. Create a business model that would help more formerly incarcerated people transition into the job market. Create campaigns that would spread more awareness on why it made sense to reform our criminal justice system. I wanted to think innovatively, in ways that would inspire more people to pursue paths that would lead to success upon release. But first things first. During my year in the halfway house, I needed to establish myself. Fortunately, I had begun making plans long before I left prison. I had a job waiting. I had money in the bank. I had an extensive support network. Further, with the different books that I wrote while I served my sentence, I had a product line to launch. My books included: Inside: Life Behind Bars in AmericaEarning Freedom: Conquering a 45-Year TermPrison! My 8,344th DayTriumph! The Straight-A Guide For Conquering Imprisonment and Preparing for ReentrySuccess! The Straight-A Guide for At-Risk Youth I didn’t write books that were masterpieces of English literature. Rather, they served the purpose. They would help people understand prisons, the people they hold, and strategies for growing through prison successfully. I hoped they would build credibility for me as I ventured into the world to start my career. My intentions were to use the books as tools. I could build a business, or income streams showing all that masterminds taught me. Anyone could use those same strategies to reject negativity or overcome challenges. The message was universal, valuable to anyone and everyone. If those strategies could empower me through decades in prison, others could use them to achieve more as well. If you’re in prison, I urge you to think about steps you can take now. Think about options that exist to influence the people you’re going to meet in the future.   The Halfway House: The halfway house in San Francisco was easy to navigate. After decades in federal prison, everything seemed easy. I was assigned to a two-man room and I could use the iPhone to connect with the world. I arrived on a Monday and met with Charles, my case manager on a Thursday. While doing his intake paperwork, Charles commented on the length of time that I’d served. He suggested that I participate in counseling sessions to help me acclimate. I was prepared. I brought all of the books that I’d written in prison, showed him support letters that I’d received, a resume I wrote, and presented him with a letter showing that I had a job waiting. The letter confirmed I could start working as soon as the halfway house authorized me to begin. “How did you get all of this done while you were in prison?” As Charles flipped through the books, I could sense that the tangible work I presented influenced his perception. Instead of seeing me as the ex-convict who served a quarter century and needed counseling, he treated me as a man. He said that he would give me as much liberty as I needed. I was excused from having to waste time in the counseling classes. Instead, I could continue executing a plan for success that I was able to articulate to my case manager.
