Your health plan might be robbing you blind. The fun part? You may be paying someone to let it happen. Healthcare benefits are one of the biggest expenses for small business owners, and most employers are stuck playing a game where the rules are hidden, the prices move, and somehow the bill always gets worse. In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, hosts Matthew R. Meehan and Luigi Rosabianca sit down with Donovan Ryckis, CEO of Ethos Benefits, to rip the lid off employer-sponsored healthcare. Donovan breaks down why insurance costs keep rising, how brokers can create conflicts of interest, why pharmacy benefit managers deserve a long side-eye, and how small businesses can start asking much better questions before renewal season punches them in the face.

In this episode of Join the Docs, our ever-curious hosts, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest, take a deep dive into the labyrinthine world of medical research. With their signature blend of wit and wisdom, they aim to demystify the intricate processes behind drug discovery and clinical trials, making it as clear as a well-written prescription minus the totally illegible doctor's handwriting of course! How does Professor Sackier set the tone for the discussion? He compares drug discovery to dating. You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince—or in this case, your blockbuster drug! Dr. Guest, not to be outdone, quips back, "And just like dating, it can cost you an arm and a leg, but hopefully not your liver!"The Docs delve into the various types of research, from basic science to clinical studies with a nod to the ridiculous. Ethical considerations are next on the menu, and Dr. Guest serves up a hearty helping of humour. The Docs discuss the importance of informed consent, patient safety, and the moral dilemmas that can arise, all while keeping the tone light and engaging. However, sometimes people go astray and medics are not immune; The Docs explore cases where some very naughty people did rather terrible things with publications - you won't want to miss these stories! The episode emphasises the role of curiosity and the unwavering commitment to improving patient care as the key motivators for doctors. Curiosity didn't just kill the cat, says Sackier, it also cured it! Well, metaphorically speaking, of course. They share heartwarming and hilarious anecdotes about their own experiences in the field, making the complex topic relatable and entertaining. With their infectious humour and deep knowledge, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest make this episode of Join the Docs a must-listen for anyone curious about the world of medical research. So grab your lab coat and stethoscope, and get ready for a rollercoaster ride through the fascinating, funny, and sometimes downright bizarre world of drug discovery and clinical trials!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Episode 22:27 Side-Effects May Include… Most people know that EVERY drug carries with it the potential for negative side effects. Even aspirin. Unfortunately, what most people DON'T know is that severe illness and/or death is oftentimes one of these side effects. In fact, more Americans die each year from pharmaceutical drugs than from ANY other condition other than heart disease and cancer. Sad, but true. What's even sadder is that many conditions can be treated WITHOUT pharmaceutical drugs and, therefore, WITHOUT the corresponding side effects. It's called Holistic Medicine and it is an approach that focuses on using NATURAL remedies to restore a person's health. Unfortunately, most medical doctors, and the medical profession as a whole, ignore all things “natural' and limit their treatment options to “a pill for every ill.” WHY they do this is a subject for another time. For now, just know that the use of pharmaceutical drugs is VERY profitable which is why you see these pills advertised on TV commercials, magazines… and all across the internet. You also see, at the end of these advertisements, a warning stating “side effects may include…” Listening to the list of side effects is scary as they are oftentimes WORSE than the actual condition they are supposed to be treating! On this episode we talk about the use, and misuse, of pharmaceutical drugs with an emphasis on how harmful many of them can be… even when used properly. We also discuss one particular drug that is marketed specifically as a treatment for the side effects of other drugs. (Yes, there is a drug that is promoted as a treatment for the side effects of other drugs!) Be sure to give this episode a good listen. Then, share it with a friend. In addition, check the potential side effects of every drug YOU are taking. Thanks! ————— Want to learn more? In this episode we explore the 1997 disappearance of Lori Ceci Bova. Lori went for a 2am walk one summer morning following an argument with her husband. Lori would never be seen again alive or dead. Law enforcement has their suspicions, but their person of interest, and possibly the only one that knows what happened to Lori, died in their own tragic fashion. Multiple missing person cases in the area mimic the events of Lori's disappearance and it is speculated that it was all the doing of an individual called "The Chautauqua County Serial Killer". We also hear the story of Autumn Klein, who's desire to have a child led her to follow the ill advice of her husband. Autumn started taking a very popular health store supplement, but the side effects of this particular one for her included DEATH. Her husband was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for his wife's untimely passing. This week, we're excited to have the opportunity to welcome E.A. Aymar to the show to celebrate the release of his latest novel writing as E.A. Barres, They're Gone, which is out now through Crooked Lane Books! They're Gone is a novel where two women's husbands are murdered on the same night. The men have different backgrounds, but they are killed in an identical way with two bullet wounds: one in the head and another in the heart. The women each begin their own search for answers, leading to a web of dark secrets and shocking discoveries that lead them to eventually find each other. As they dig deeper into the clues surrounding the death of their husbands, it put them and those they love in danger. They're Gone is packed with plenty of surprises, great characters and Aymar ratchets up the tension to create a gripping read that is sure to satisfy fans of crime fiction and thrillers. We loved this book at Ink Heist and the deeper you plunge into the mystery weaved throughout They're Gone, it becomes almost impossible to put down. Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about Noir at the Bar, THEY'RE GONE, working with Crooked Lane, writing under a pseudonym, notes from editors, writing violence, his story in Tough, upcoming works, and so much more. We had a lot of fun recording this episode and hanging out with Aymar, who is incredibly funny and a great guest. We hope you guys enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

"Thanksgiving for the past, gives us hope in the present for the future."
This episode is guaranteed to leave you feeling motivated! This conversation was definitely in my top 3 of the year, and I think you may agree! Charles is an incredible speaker who was once the 6th fastest man on Earth until a 99% tear of his quad sent him packing his bags to move back home to live with his mom, unsure of what life would look like next. He went from feeling like he went from the top of the world to the bottom, to reframing that perspective and starting to share his story and help others through that journey. As Charles became more vulnerable in sharing his story, others began to open themselves up to him as well, and he has now spoke on several stages, founded Thrive events, and created the Thrive planner!
