Chair: Clare Sawyer Romance is a popular genre in Australian YA fiction, reflecting the age that the characters first begin to express their love and sexuality. There are added layers of complexity for characters from non-Western cultures, as they balance the usual growing pains of adolescence and young romance with a sense of being different from the dominant culture. Join authors Sarah Ayoub and Randa Abdel-Fattah as they discuss realistic characters, romantic tropes, feelings of being 'Other' and the importance of self-love. On the show today… In news that will thrill elder millennials, Netflix has released the first trailer for Heartbreak High, the highly anticipated reimagining of the 90s Australian YA series and you must take a look at it. And in an interesting turn of events, Joe Jonas has given an interview about his partnership with a cosmetic injectable brand, saying he's attempting to break the taboo around men's beauty routines. Yes, it's all hooked on sponsored content, but his words have opened up an interesting conversation about men's faces. Plus, after many years of speculation, the subjects of an anonymous 2016 lawsuit where a woman said she was assaulted by her “then-husband” on a private plane have been revealed as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The FBI reports about the famous couple contain some very disturbing allegations of assault, so once again we have to discuss why the world refuses to have a negative conversation about Brad Pitt. Even as the evidence continues to pile up against him. Joining me for this episode's online chat is award-winning Young Adult crime author, Ellie Marney. Ellie has been involved in the creation of the national campaign #LoveOzYA to promote and advocate for Australian YA literature, she has contributed to the critically-acclaimed Begin End Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology and she co-runs the popular #LoveOzYAbookclub online. Ellie's books include the Circus Hearts series, White Night, the Every trilogy which begins with Every Breath and was her first young adult book published in 2013. Her latest book is None Shall Sleep which was released in September 2020 and is a dark and chilling read following two teenagers unfortunately familiar with the violence of serial killers who are drawn into an FBI case and become the conduit between the FBI and an incarcerated teenage serial killer, who seems to have insight into the current case. We chat about writing crime for young adults, the question at the heart of crime fiction, sociopaths and geniuses and how difficult they are to write when they are teenagers! The pairings: The Erasure Initiative by Lili Wilkinson A girl wakes up on a self-driving bus. She has no memory of how she got there or who she is. Her nametag reads CECILY. The six other people on the bus are just like her: no memories, only nametags. There's a screen on each seatback that gives them instructions. A series of tests begin, with simulations projected onto the front window of the bus. The passengers must each choose an outcome; majority wins. But as the testing progresses, deadly secrets are revealed, and the stakes get higher and higher. Soon Cecily is no longer just fighting for her freedom - she's fighting for her life. Ellie loves this book for its fast-paced storytelling and its mystery meat sandwiches so to pair with it she recommends Peck's Paste sandwiches and a Long Island Iced Tea cause you'll need a stiff drink before you're done! Circe by Madeline Miller In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love. Ellie found this a completely engrossing read, the kind of book you neglect your family over, beautifully written, refreshing, it left a profound impression. She suggests the only appropriate pairing is a platter of delicious feta cheese, dolmades, crusty bread and oil with a delicious chilled wine and I quite agree :) Justine's book was The last days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp. Creepy yet funny this book requires coffee to keep you alert then chamomile tea to calm your nerves!

Alison Evans is the award winning author of Ida and Highway Bodies. They are a spectacular author of Australian YA and with so many high schoolers being home schooled at the moment, you could do worse than grabbing a copy of Alison’s catalogue. Especially the brilliant Euphoria KidsThe story centres on Iris and Babs. They both go to the same school but they don’t know each other. In fact nobody really notices Babs, not since a witch cursed her and she periodically becomes invisible.Iris has friends but not the human kind. Iris grew from a seed in the garden and has always had more kinship with the fairies and dryads that live in the bush. Until one day when Babs appears to Iris on the Bus.As their friendship blossoms they meet the boy. The boy is new at school and is on a journey discovering who he is; including his name. With their friendship connecting them to the magic around them, Iris, Babs and the boy start to experience true companionship and happiness. That is until the fairies warn Iris that the witch who cursed Babs has returned to the forest...Euphoria Kids explores what it means to be young and queer and finding out about yourself. It delves into the loneliness of not being understood, but also the joys of meeting your people. It’s a wonderful story that blends the supernatural with the everyday and shows what real magic can look like in the world. It’s a pretty strange and scary time right now and I don’t mind saying that having a little magic injected into my world is often just what I need. It’s also a book that reminds us how powerful connection is. I don’t think many people could watch Iris, Babs and the boy build their friendship without wanting to look up an old mate and see what they're up to...

Amelia Westlake meets My Favorite Murder in this debut from a terrific new voice in Australian YA. Combines a realistic story about high school drama and toxic friendship with true crime - the endlessly fascinating Somerton Man or Tamam Shud mystery. 15-year-old Lara Laylor feels like supporting character in her own life. She's Ashley's best friend, she's Hannah's sister-she's never just Lara. When new history teacher Mr. Grant gives her an unusual assignment: investigating the mystery of the Somerton Man. Found dead in on an Adelaide beach in 1948, a half-smoked cigarette still in his mouth and the labels cut out of his clothes, the Somerton Man has intrigued people for years. Was he a spy? A criminal? Year 10 has plenty of mysteries of its own: boys, drama queen friends, and enigmatic new students. When they seem just as unsolvable as a 60-year-old cold case, Lara finds herself spending more and more time on the assignment. But Mr Grant himself may be the biggest mystery of all... Interspersed with fictionalised snapshots of the Somerton Man investigation, ALL THAT IMPOSSIBLE SPACE is a coming of age novel exploring toxic friendships and the balance of power between teacher and student.
