DECADES-OLD MYSTERY OF SOMERTON MAN SOLVED - A TRUE CRIME AND COKE QUICKIE The Tamám Shud case, also known as the Mystery of the Somerton Man, is a partially solved case of an unidentified man found dead on 1 December 1948 on The Somerton Park beach, just south of Adelaide South Australia. The case is named after the Persian  phrase tamám shud, meaning "is over" or "is finished", which was printed on a scrap of paper found months later in the fob pocket of the man's trousers. The scrap had been torn from the final page of a copy of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, authored by 12th century poet Omar Khayyam Tamám was misspelt as Tamán in many early reports, and this error has often been repeated, leading to confusion about the name in the media. Following a public appeal by police, the book from which the page had been torn was located. On the inside back cover, detectives read through indentations left from previous handwriting – a local telephone number, another unidentified number, and text that resembled a coded message. The text has not been deciphered or interpreted in a way that satisfies authorities on the case. The case has been considered, since the early stages of the police investigation, "one of Australia's most profound mysteries". There has been intense speculation ever since regarding the identity of the victim, the cause of his death, and the events leading up to it. Public interest in the case remains significant for several reasons: the death occurred at a time of heightened international tensions following the beginning of the Cold War; the apparent involvement of a secret code; the possible use of an undetectable poison; and the inability of authorities to identify the dead man. In addition to intense public interest in Australia during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the case also attracted international attention. South Australia Police consulted their counterparts overseas and distributed information about the dead man internationally, in an effort to identify him. International circulation of a photograph of the man and details of his fingerprints yielded no positive identification. For example, in the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was unable to match the dead man's fingerprint with prints taken from files of domestic criminals. Scotland Yard was also asked to assist with the case, but could not offer any insights. In recent years, additional evidence has emerged, including an old identification card possibly identifying the Somerton Man as one H. C. Reynolds and an ongoing DNA analysis of hair roots found on the plaster bust. On 19 May 2021, after a series of requests, the body was exhumed for analysis. Police stated that the remains were in "reasonable" condition and were optimistic about the prospect of DNA recovery. On 26 July 2022, Adelaide University professor Derek Abbott claimed that DNA evidence from hair samples removed from his death mask had proven the man to be Carl "Charles" Webb, born on November 16, 1905, in Footscray, in Melbourne, to Richard August Webb and Eliza Amelia Morris Grace; however, SA Police have not yet verified this claim. Welcome back! Danielle talks about the mysterious and still unknown identity of the Somerton Man. He was found deceased, propped up in front of a wall at Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia in 1948. There was no identification found on the body. A note was discovered sewn into his pants pocket which read, "Tamam Shud", Persian for it's finished. So many suspicious details were found that it made investigators believe his death was a homicide, likely a result of being poisoned. His body was exhumed last year to run DNA tests in an attempt to uncover new evidence. In this week's episode Sandra talks about the Ancient Ram Inn. Located in Gloucestershire UK the Ancient Ram Inn was built in 1145. It was first used to house masons, slaves and workers who were constructing the St. Mary's Church located directly across the street. Today it is used as an inn and is home to several spirits. One of them is supposedly a witch who was burned at the stake in the 1500's. You can actually request the room that she supposedly stayed in before being killed. That room is known as the "Witch's Room." The Somerton Man case is one that has confounded Australia for almost 75 years now. It all started when an unidentifiable man was found dead on Somerton Beach. The man had no wallet, no form of ID, there was no name written inside of his clothing as would have been typical for the time. And it seemed like all of this was on purpose. Things in the case only got stranger when a tiny rolled up piece of paper was found in a hidden fob pocket in the man's jacket. The words on the paper read “Tamam Shud” and were later determined to have been ripped out of a book of poetry written in the 11th century: The Rubaiyat. In part one we'll dip our toes into the mystery and in part two Ash will be taking everyone to the deep end of the pool for a serious dive into who the heck this man could possibly be and what the heck happened to him. On December 1, 1948, in Adelaide, Australia, a young jockey, Neil Day, was riding his horse on Somerton beach. It was around 6:30 a.m. when he and his riding mate discovered the body of a clean-shaven man wearing a brown suit. Although the person was clearly dead, he was laying on his back against a wall and seemed to be staring at the sky. There was no identification on the body. Thus, officials never identified the man or the cause of death. Then four months later they found a clue. It was a piece of paper with the words “Tamam Shud ,” meaning the end. This is the case of the Somerton Man, also known as the Taman Shud case. On the night of November 30, 1948, at least two groups of passersby saw a man who looked like the dead man the jockeys found the following morning. He had also sat in the same place that the Somerton Man lay. The witnesses said that they did not get a very good look at him, but it was the same man from what they could tell. Passersby saw him around 7:00 p.m. By 7:30-8:00, there was no discernible movement. One witness said he had wondered if the man was alive, but assumed he was drunk. Evidence Found at the Scene The Somerton man wore a nice suit, which pointed to at least a marginal amount of prosperity. An expensive British cigarette, not from Australia, lay behind his ear. Another half-smoked cigarette of the same brand nestled between his cheek and collar. Interestingly, a pack of those cigarettes placed in the case of a cheaper brand was in his pocket. Additionally, investigators found a few more items in his pockets: a book of matches, a used bus ticket to Glenelg, and an unused train ticket to Henley Beach.
