Harijs Witolinsch hat eine bemerkenswerte Biografie: Als Junior wurde er vom legendären russischen Trainer Wladimir Jursinow geprägt. Elle a déjà fait trois fois le tour du monde. Tara, une goélette polaire dédiée à l'océanographie, spécialisée dans l'échantillonnage du plancton, participe à une étude inédite menée par le Laboratoire européen de Biologie moléculaire qui vise à analyser, à l'échelle microscopique, l'impact des activités humaines sur les écosystèmes marins. Le voilier navigue en ce moment le long du littoral suédois, dans la Baltique, une mer qui se meure. Reportage à Stockholm où l'équipage a fait escale.  C'est la première fois qu'Antoine Quiblier, le capitaine de Tara s'aventure dans les eaux saumâtres et peu profondes de la Baltique : « Ce qu'on remarque c'est qu'il n'y a pas beaucoup d'oiseaux marins, très peu de gros mammifères, quelques phoques en baie de Riga, mais c'est différent de la Baltique, et pas de bateaux de pêche, c'est la première mer où je navigue où il y a si peu d'activités halieutiques, de pêche quoi. » Harengs, cabillauds, saumons se font de plus en plus rares dans cette mer considérée par endroits comme morte. En cause, un phénomène microscopique, que les scientifiques de Tara ont immédiatement constaté dans les échantillons d'eau qu'ils ont prélevés : l'eutrophisation.« Il n'y a plus d'oxygène dans l'eau… »« La première chose qui nous a marqués, ce sont ces efflorescences algales de cyanobactéries qui arrivent à la surface, encore plus les journées chaudes. ». Hugo Berthelot est chef scientifique à bord : « Le développement de ces algues est favorisé par une trop grande concentration d'azotes, en nutriments en général, qui fait dysfonctionner les écosystèmes. Quand les phytoplanctons sont en trop grand nombre, ils consomment trop d'oxygène en se dégradant, et ça provoque des phénomènes d'anoxie, il n'y a plus d'oxygène dans l'eau, donc toute la biodiversité marine, les poissons, les organismes qui vivent dans les fonds sous-marins meurent. »Principale source de ce trop-plein de phytoplancton, les engrais et fertilisants utilisés dans l'agriculture qui ruissellent dans cette mer presque fermée, où l'eau peine à se renouveler. « C'est le labo humide où l'on fait la majorité des filtrations, on amène l'eau sur le pont avec la Rosette que tu vois – c'est un espèce de vaisseau plongeur de bouteilles. » L'océanographe Charlotte Begouen Demeaux constate que ces proliférations de planctons, favorisées par les pollutions, se multiplient partout sur la planète : « C'est un vrai problème depuis plusieurs années dans les lacs, on va fermer les lacs parce que y plus d'oxygène, les poissons meurent et en plus ça fait un développement d'algues toxiques, et ça commence à être de plus en plus présent dans les zones côtières des océans. » À lire aussiLa goélette «Tara» repart explorer l'impact des pollutions sur les côtes européennesUne future base de données inéditePour étudier les interactions moléculaires entre la terre et la mer, une autre équipe de chercheurs prélève en parallèle de Tara des échantillons sur la côte, dans les champs, sur les bords de rivière, le long des plages. Donc là, on voit la carte de la mission actuelle ? : « Oui, on va toucher mi-août la Norvège, on fait une escale à Édimbourg, on passe par le nord, on revient à Lorient faire le plein de beurre, vin, pain, préparer le navire à rejoindre la Méditerranée, pour passer l'hiver à Lyon, pour aller expliquer aux gens du centre de la France, que toutes les activités humaines qui se passent sur le Rhône sont connectées par le fleuve à la Méditerranée, qui est comme la Baltique, une mer fermée, mais on a les mêmes problématiques. »200 sites vont être sondés en deux ans d'expédition. Una landa inedita, in buona parte inesplorata.Nel dicembre del 1968 Natalia Ginzburg scrisse un breve saggio intitolato La vecchiaia. Ginzburg a quei tempi aveva 52 anni e tutto il testo è attraversato da un doppio tono: quello profetico, una sorta di manualistica sentimentale su come salvarsi, su come provare a non diventare vecchi dentro un percorso ineluttabile, e quello legato all'accettazione dolorosa della propria decadenza connessa al tempo: un tempo implacabile, che sarà uguale per tutti. Le parole della scrittrice rimangono parole del secolo scorso, fuori da qualsiasi schema digitale, e il digitale è invece la grammatica di questo tempo. Lette oggi restano intatte nella loro bellezza e profondità ma reclamano alcuni aggiustamenti e qualche nuova domanda. Come si diventa vecchi oggi?
