THE MIGHTY MEZ OF THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS ASKS THE I CHING: "HOW CAN I OVERCOME RESENTMENTS DURING PTSD?" THE ANSWER, THOUGH OBSCURE, POINTS THE WAY... MEZ MULLS IT OVER, ALONG WITH DREAMS AND SONGS.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a pervasive topic of conversation these days, and recently it's been on my mind a lot as I endeavor to move past grief. It's been over 5 years since my life partner departed suddenly - so suddenly that when it was happening, and for a long time after, I completely denied its reality. We know that death comes for us all, and no matter what age you are it's probably best to prepare yourself, to make friends with the Reaper, and get ready to surrender to his scythe - (I heard that George Harrison used to rehearse his passing); Sarah Bernhardt slept in a coffin… but, very few of us are truly prepared, even at some pretty advanced ages - my father wasn't reconciled to his fate even when it came at 96. The last phone conversation we had as he waited to be seen at the emergency room was fraught with annoyed bewilderment at being held there against his will.It seems to be the primary topic of conversation that Rich and I are apt to discuss on any given day, and he has expressed frustration at my reticence to volunteer the dour details of my slide towards the inevitable, but really, why harp on it? Why dwell on the depressing aspects of life while you can still laugh ironically at those same concerns? Eat, drink, and be merry, I say. Of course, if you have to constantly watch your sodium and cholesterol while considering the lethal effects of the cocktail you're sipping, your options for fun will be limited. Anyway, back to PTSD… This week it's been front and center of my consciousness because I recently consumed two items of popular culture that feature it - one 60 years old, the other recently released - namely, Rod Serling's short lived 1965 television series, The Loner, starring Lloyd Bridges, and Christopher Nolan's freshly minted sword and sandal epic, The Odyssey. In both, the main character struggles with PTSD - Bridges' character in the aftermath of the Civil War, and Odysseus from his part in the atrocities recounted in the Iliad. Both men have experienced horrific and emotionally crippling events; they roam vistas rife with unremitting violence, and long to find home. Rod Serling transplanted his WW2 experiences to the Western genre, and audiences weren't ready for it's moral meditations, ill suited to an escapist medium. Regarding the Odyssey, Jon Stewart has reflected that it seems like a sequel to Oppenheimer, Nolan's rueful depiction of that protagonist's bequest of a doomsday weapon to arm mankind with the power to destroy itself. Echoes of PTSD resound everywhere - inside each of us, in the chaos all around, and throughout our popular culture. And, today I asked the oracle how to find peace with it. QUESTION: HOW CAN I OVERCOME RESENTMENT?The Oracle answered with Hexagrams 51  (Provoking), and 31 (Cutting)Let's examine those, along with  a dream diary passage, and  a song, “Cairns” composed during that time…Chemayne used to collect stones that appealed to her. She would then cover them in varnish to make them glisten. After she died there were tons of them, and I started giving them away as gifts. One friend was so taken with them that he took a bunch and built some amazing cairns, a term which I hadn't been familiar with, but which filled me with hope and pride for their future home. The following song “Cairns” evokes that appreciation. CAIRNS (Bill Mesnik)Stones banded by layers of timeStacking stone upon stone upon stoneCreates a monumentA tower sublimeMarking timeThese cairns of stoneChorus:Fly away through Arches in the desertTo a windswept morning beachWhere the sun glistens on the pebblesAs you soarSwiftlyOut of reach You left no lost communicationBefore your flight to the unknownJust some orphansWith no destinationLying lonely in our homeI'll stack stone upon stone upon stoneAnd mark the trail of timeFor some wanderer To wonder onWho left this cairn behind?

(PATREON EXCLUSIVE)First things first, Loner is more than the average "man lost in woods with camera" movie; the cinematography looks beautiful.Wishing there was more horror in this horror movie, but accepting it as the horror-lite psychological drama that it is.Melvin confesses that his general bitterness toward "male loneliness epidemic" characters prevented him from enjoying the film as much as he could have, and also finds it convicting.Kathryn observed a dichotomy between fantasy and truth, and explores how the film portrayed these things.Melvin, however, approaches it a little differently. He compares the film's portrayal of technology against nature, and how that's explored through manhood; or patriarchy.Melvin, "No person has lived well alone."The ending leaves Melvin a little confused. Send us Fan MailSingle can feel like one big label, but I don't buy that. I'm Julius Marquise, and I'm pulling apart a question that hits your dating life harder than most people admit: what “type” of single are you, and how does that shape who you attract, who you frustrate, and who you actually build with?We start with four single archetypes from a research-inspired article: the Professional (ambitious, structured, achievement-focused), the Carefree (adventure-driven, laid-back, flexible), the Heartless (emotionally detached, no-strings energy), and the Loner (solitude-loving, slow to connect). I talk through the best traits and the potential downsides of each, plus the real-world compatibility landmines like scheduling vs spontaneity, commitment vs freedom, and connection vs distance. If you're into alternative relationships, kink, or nontraditional dating, this kind of self-knowledge makes communication cleaner and consent clearer. Then I add six more “types of singles” from another self-report study: Happy-Go-Lucky, Where's My Social Life, Quiet Sufferer, It's Not Me It's You, Maybe I'm The Problem, and Mixed Bag. I'm honest about the limitations of self-reporting, but I also show how these categories can help you spot patterns in self-esteem, stress, health, friendships, and family ties so you can date with more intention.Listen, share it with a friend who needs a reality check, and subscribe, rate, and review Around the Kinky Kampfire. Today's episode is about a song that was written just up the hill from where I was born and in the same town where my wife and and I were wed. So it most definitely “strikes close to home.” Neil Young had emerged from the great north woods of Canada into the public limelight in the mid–1960s. He joined up with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay to create the Buffalo Springfield, an LA-based band that asked the musical question “Stop, hey, what's that sound” before disintegrating – but not before Young himself had quit and rejoined the band several times. Then, in 1969, he made a self-titled solo album that had great songs, including “The Loner,” (one of my personal favorites) but which didn't sell well. And then Young really came into his own. His second solo album got him some much needed publicity, and he hit a creative chord with an ensemble of garage musicians that he dubbed Crazy Horse. His next stop was to sign on with Crosby, Stills, and Nash (wherein he added his own last name to the group) and played the Woodstock festival with them. His participation in the CSNY album Deja Vu brought him both acclaim and paychecks, which he used to purchase a sprawling ranch in the mountains of the San Francisco Bay Area.  One day, Young took a ride around his newly purchased estate with the property's caretaker, who was at least forty years older than Young at the time. The two men had a long conversation, and the result of that little open-air chat became the basis of one of Young's most enduring acoustic songs. Let's find out how the song came together, who played on it, and how the listening public took to it.

Warning: This episode accidentally turned into The Tuddle Therapy Hour. What started as a normal podcast quickly spiraled into Tuddle trauma-dumping while Colton moonlights as an unlicensed therapist (probably violating several HIPAA laws). From reliving their chaotic weekend to unpacking Tuddle's very awkward run-in with his ex-wife, it's messy, it's dramatic, and it's weirdly therapeutic.
