Barry Minkow Exposes Multifamily Syndication Fraud: Insights From A Convicted Felon Now Working With the FBI!The multifamily syndication market is booming, but beneath the glossy marketing materials and promises of high returns lurks a darker side: widespread fraud. Today's podcast features Barry Minkow, a reformed businessman, preacher, and former convict, who brings a unique perspective to the world of distressed debt and real estate investing. He shares his insights into the often-hidden dangers of multifamily syndication schemes.Barry isn't your typical real estate expert. His experiences, including a stint in federal prison for fraud, give him a firsthand understanding of the deceptive tactics used by some promoters. His perspective is invaluable for investors looking to avoid costly mistakes. He warns against the hype surrounding Reg D offerings, emphasizing the importance of independent verification and due diligence. He says, "Don't rely on glossy marketing materials alone. Dig deeper. Verify everything. Because what looks too good to be true, usually is."Here are five key takeaways from Barry's insights:Beware of Overly High Returns: Multifamily syndications often promise unrealistic returns. Barry cautions investors to be wary of deals offering unusually high yields, as these may be indicators of fraudulent schemes. (He humorously calls this kind of promising "the lipstick on a pig" approach.)Independent Verification is Crucial: Don't blindly trust the information provided by promoters. Conduct thorough due diligence, including obtaining independent appraisals and reviewing financial statements, before investing. Barry's own experiences highlight the consequences of neglecting this crucial step. “Trust, but verify,” he says, a lesson he learned the hard way.Understand the Numbers: Analyze financial statements closely to avoid being misled by inflated numbers. Barry stresses the importance of understanding key metrics like LTV (loan-to-value ratio), occupancy rates, and debt service coverage ratios. “If the numbers don't add up, they're probably lying,” he warns, with a wink.Look for Red Flags: Barry points out several red flags to watch out for, including unrealistic projections, lack of transparency, and aggressive marketing tactics. He recommends paying close attention to the details; if something feels off, it probably is.Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions: Barry emphasizes the importance of asking tough questions and challenging the information presented by promoters. Don't be afraid to ask follow up questions; if the promoter is trying to obfuscate information, it's a major red flag.Barry's insights offer a much-needed dose of reality in an otherwise overly hyped market. He urges investors to exercise caution, perform thorough due diligence, and prioritize financial literacy. The consequences of fraud can be devastating – financial ruin, legal battles, and even criminal charges. It's far more prudent to protect your investment by asking questions, performing due diligence, and making informed decisions. You can find Barry Minkow on Instagram (@MinkoBarry) and TikTok (@OneMinuteFraud). Remember, in the world of real estate investing, knowledge is power – and due diligence is your best defense.Watch the original VIDEO HERE!Book a call with SCOTT HERE!Love the show? Barry Minkow is one of the most infamous financial scam artists in American History. By the age of 21 he was running a ponzi scheme worth a billion dollars. He made history by being the youngest person to take a company public with his carpet cleaning business. But what people didn't know was that Barry was using money from the mafia to help fund this business. He ran bank and wire fraud, embezzled money from investors, and much more. Barry was so committed to running scams that he's been convicted more than once- one of these convictions came down WHILE he was helping the feds in fraud cases. He ended serving time in federal prison and turned his life around. He works now with the federal government go after companies that are committing fraud just like he used to. I often find myself wanting to hear personal, human stories from fellow therapists. And I'm also curious what the experience of being a therapist is like when we're sometimes going through tough times ourselves. Today I'm sharing my story of growing up in a narcissistic household and the experience of unpacking that as a 30-year-old while seeing clients in my therapy practice. The ”I hung up on Warren Buffett” Podcast by Wolfpack Research
This week The Pack is joined by a man who needs no introductions to anyone in the world of finance. Barry Jay Minkow, former American businessman, pastor, and 2x convicted felon, is now turned, fraud hunter. At 16, Minkow founded ZZZZ Best, an immensely successful carpet cleaning and restoration company. However, it was a front to attract investment for a massive mafia-funded Ponzi scheme. ZZZZ Best collapsed in 1987, costing investors and lenders $100 million in one of the largest investment frauds ever perpetrated by a single person and one of the largest accounting frauds in history. It is often used as a case study of accounting fraud. After being released from jail, Minkow became a pastor and fraud investigator in San Diego and spoke at churches and schools about ethics. This ended in 2011 when he admitted to helping deliberately drive down the stock price of homebuilder Lennar and was ordered back to prison for five years. Three years later, Minkow admitted to defrauding his church and was sentenced to an additional five years in prison. He is subject to restitution requirements totaling $612 million. With his sidekick from prison, "The Big Homie," Minkow now uses his abilities to expose fraud and launches a new podcast called “Fraud Factor” Sit back and enjoy some tales from a HOF of financial scams and a bad guy turned good.

Back to the story of the Most Devious Pole in America, Barry Minkow! After his initial stint in prison, Barry gets some good optics for the second time and... continues to take advantage of them! More movie recommendations, random bullshit, and Collin unsuccessfully trying to make me edit things out of the episode! Take that, Collin!
This week we finish up our story of Barry Minkow and his numerous frauds. Along the way we find time to discuss the Cheesecake Factory, Nina being a virgin, all white men thinking they are comedians, and how Barry Minkow moved on from carpet cleaning to being a pastor, abusing his wives and in general being a terrible person as he continues to lie and steal his way to new places including Hollywood!
After a week break to sort out ourselves, we return with the first in a two part series about youthful entrepreneur and financial crime prodigy, Barry Minkow! After a too-long discussion on whether or not he's Polish (maybe), Barry's early start and rookie seasons in white color crime are brought up and discussed, and Collin won't shut the hell up about Saving Private Ryan. This week we had so much information we had to split it into two episodes, in part 1 we discuss odd jobs, why you don't take loans from your drug dealer, making your dad call you mister(somehow not sexual), who used to own the Seattle Mariners, and the story of Barry Minkow, the entrepreneurial prodigy that landed a spot on Oprah after starting a multimillion dollar carpet cleaning company at the age of 16. The only problem was that the company did almost no actual business and Barry Minkow was a bit of an a$$hole.
In this episode of Fact and Suspicion, Ben and Dan discuss three prolific conmen: Billy McFarland, Kyle Sandler, and Barry Minkow.
Rick chats with author and former CIA agent Ric Prado about his new book "Black Ops: The Life of a CIA Shadow Warrior," former conman and subject of the new documentary "King of Con" Barry Minkow, and top defense attorney and author David S. Rudolf about his new book "American Injustice: Inside Stories from the Underbelly of the Criminal Justice System."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Barry Minkow on Breaking it Down with Frank MacKay - King Of The Con by Frank MacKay
Barry Minkow came to America's attention in the early/mid 80s, when he became a teenage millionaire when he founded ZZZZ Best Carpet Cleaning, which appeared to be an immensely successful carpet-cleaning and restoration company. However, it was actually a front to attract investment for a massive Ponzi scheme. It collapsed in 1987, costing investors and lenders $100 million: one of the largest investment frauds ever perpetrated by a single person, as well as one of the largest accounting frauds in history...he was convicted and went to jail...but that is in NO WAY where the story ends...and you can find out the whole story in the new Discovery Plus docu-series, King of the Con.

Meet Barry, he started a multi-million dollar carpet cleaning business while still in high school, he was a pastor, a fraud investigator, owes over 600 million dollars, and is completely full of shit.Do you want to hear a story?
The ”I hung up on Warren Buffett” Podcast by Wolfpack Research
This week, The Pack takes a trip back to the early days of short selling only to find out that, sadly, not much has changed. In 1970, Kurt Feshbach (@Kurt_Feshbach on Twitter) was a high school dropout, described in one article as a “typical SoCal surfer” sporting long hair, flipflops and a tank top. Based on appearance alone, nobody could have known that his small company in California, Feshbach Bros., was actually one of the most feared Activist Short Sellers in the world. Kurt takes us through his first trade (which netted him $5k) and through some of the biggest hits that, in 9 years, had Feshbach Bros. managing a billion dollars - for those keeping score, that's an annualized return (IRR) of 232.4% - not bad for high school dropout. Kurt went to war with journalists and banks while balancing a complicated relationship with the SEC and other regulators. He was criticized at the time for using what many considered to be unorthodox investigation techniques but has now become standard practice for top-tier Activist Shorts. Kurt now runs https://bindlepaper.com. The Bindle Paper is an independent boutique research firm which produces deep dive, single-stock short research for a discrete and limited group of institutional clients. bin·dle pa·per: A clean piece of standard-size, folded paper used to contain trace evidence. Sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy the trip through time, knowledge, and experience that Kurt imparts during our fascinating conversation. “We're doomed to repeat the past no matter what. That's what it is to be alive. It's pretty dense kids who haven't figured that out by the time they're ten.... Most kids can't afford to go to Harvard and be misinformed.” ― Kurt Vonnegut 1:05 Kurt talks about how he got started and the help he had from his partners and his father. 2:42 Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Hear the long list of companies whose executives ended up in prison after dealing with the Feshbach Bros. 6:05 Kurt working on the sell side of Wall St, and meets a man that showed him the light, which led him to his first short idea. 12:26 A business is born; Kurt brings in his brothers and gets some seed money from a partner to start Feshbach Brothers. 15:03 Green energy was booming in the 1980's - the problem was that most of them were frauds. Kurt made a killing exposing them, including one that claimed to create "clean" energy from human waste… turns out they were full of shit. 17:40 Kurt takes us through the process that they employed to obtain SEC filings via 1980's technology. 28:06 Kurt talks about ZZZBest and Barry Minkow, one of the biggest and best shorts on his impressive track record, as well as a few others that were absolutely amazing finds. 34:55 All that swag, congressional hearings, and Robert Flaherty. 41:19 Picking through the trash, putting the puzzle together, and working with reporters to get your story out before the internet was invented. 48:48 How the market is essentially the same 40 years later, well except for the valuations... 58:57 Kurt addresses the "rumors" that Wells Fargo killed his business 1:06:38 The SEC and 20,000 pages of thermal paper. 1:19:39 The next big thing for Kurt: The Bindle Paper.

In the 1990s, California native Barry Minkow was finally released from jail. Determined to prove his redemption to the world, the ex-con became a born-again Christian and even got a job as a local pastor. However, it wasn’t long before the new version of Barry went back to his old tricks.
We are thrilled to bring you a brand new episode of Con Artists today and for the foreseeable future. We thank you for your patience during this unprecedented time. In the 1980s, 16-year-old Barry Minkow established himself as a boy-genius after opening a chain of successful carpet cleaning stores in California. However, unbeknownst to his family and the journalists who covered him, Barry was running a ponzi scheme.

The guys recount the incredible true story of Barry Minkow, a California teen who parlayed his charisma, ambition and reckless disregard for the law into a 200-million-dollar carpet-cleaning empire in the 1980s. Music: Cover of Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)" by The Flying Lizards
By now we are all familiar with crimes and criminals on Wall Street. Bernie Madoff, Enron, Ivan Boesky, Barry Minkow and many others that have become household names. On the West Coast, the startup world of Silicon Valley had been somewhat spared from this taint. The world of “insanely great products,” “do no evil,” and “bringing friends together,” has, at least until recently, kept it’s patina. Yet in a world where people want to see the future and want to be a part of it, it certainly was a fertile ground for fraud. And no one perpetrated a greater fraud than Elizabeth Holes and her company Theranos. The story of a company whose mission was to tell you everything about your blood, with a simple finger prick, seemed too good to be true. And like most thing that seem too good to be true, it was. John Carreyrou is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter at The Wall Street Journal. He has, from the beginning, been the leader in telling the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. His book, soon to be a major motion picture, is Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup My conversation with John Carreyrou:
Paper Moon, The Sting, American Hustle, The Grifters, House of Games, The Matchstick Men; just a few of the movies we love about con men and hustlers. Yet in real life, we don’t love the likes of Bernie Madoff, or Barry Minkow, or Steven Kunes or Charles Ponzi. So why the disconnect? Why do we feel joy in being taken in by movie con men, but not so much by the real thing? The answer may very well lie in what a con man does and what he or she is. How they appear and how they try and manipulate us. Unfortunately the line between con men and salesmen and politicians is fine one. Maria Konnikova shows us the tricks in The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for It . . . Every Time.My conversation with Maria Konnikova:

Barry Minkow, the former con artist turned pastor and fraud expositor, saw success in the carpet cleaning business but later turned to fraud, including insurance fraud and a Ponzi scheme, landing him a 25-year prison sentence in 1987. After finding religion in prison, he emerged as a reformed figure, but a decade later, he returned to his fraudulent ways, manipulating stocks and extortion, resulting in more charges and a further five-year prison sentence in 2011. Despite this, he continues to run a fraud exposure platform, maintaining a social media presence under the name "Fraud Minute."Our Sponsors:* Check out Earnin and use my code Housewives for a great deal: https://www.earnin.com/* Check out Rakuten: https://www.rakuten.com* Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.com/* Check out The Honey Pot Company and use my code FALL23 for a great deal: https://thehoneypot.co/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/housewives-of-true-crime/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
