In the final episode of her short series on the Habsburg dynasty, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb turns to one of the most fascinating and misunderstood rulers of early modern Europe: Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor. Often remembered—if at all—as the "mad emperor" who withdrew from politics and lost his grip on power, Rudolf's story is far richer than the stereotype. Instead of governing from Vienna or Madrid, he relocated his imperial court to Prague, transforming it into a dazzling hub of art, science, alchemy, and astrology. Was he truly unfit to rule, or has history been unfair? Suzannah is joined by Professor Thomas Kaufmann to re-examine Rudolf II's reign not as decline, but as a bold, eccentric vision of imperial rule during a turbulent age of religious wars, Protestant uprisings, Ottoman expansion, and dynastic rivalries.MORE:Rise of the HabsburgsChales V, Habsburg Holy Roman EmperorPresented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. Semsei Rudolf nevéhez több népszerű budapesti étterem is kapcsolódik. A kezdeményezés jótékony célt is szolgál, hiszen minden, a séf ajánlatából választott fogással rászorulókat támogatnak. A Sláger FM-en minden este 22 órakor a kultúráé a főszerep S. After pushing the envelope on labels like Optimo Music and Höga Nord, Berlin-based duo Rudolf Abramov return with their latest outing “High Japan,” which launches Aquasonic Records, the new label founded by the duo. “High Japan” captures a late-night drift through neon-lit streets, combining broken funk, modular synths, and hypnotic melodies into something that defies easy categorization. The track introduces Aquasonic Records, a Berlin-based imprint focused on music that “operates outside conventional genre boundaries and algorithmic listening patterns.” Curating artists working across subaquatic kraut-dub to post-club sounds, celebrating musicians who don't fit traditional moulds. Aquasonic connects music with marine life through collaborations with divers, pairing releases with underwater footage while supporting ocean conservation efforts.

From wagon crashes to mob justice, Barovia trades one fallen paladin for a halfling with a grudge — and nothing is ever as simple as it seems.Barovia wastes nothing. Not even grief. Barely half an hour after Sören Ironwood, our radiant paladin, was executed by Vallaki's Reeve, the survivors were forced to stagger forward without him. Traxidor the Cleric, Radley the Eldritch Knight, and Daermon the Arcane Trickster retreated to the Blue Water Inn, once a lively place but now silent under Lady Wachter's curfew. They tried to distract themselves by debating Madam Eva's fortune-telling. The cards — the Tax Collector, the Bishop, the Executioner, the Mercenary, the Seer — dangled in memory, half-cryptic, half-ominous. Traxidor obsessed over the Amber Temple, Radley mocked fate, Daermon played catch-up. But amid their grief, Daermon had a rogue's realization: the Reeve's men were hauling Vallakovich possessions by wagon. Maybe the Abbot's wedding dress was already on one. Why storm another fortress when you could steal a cart?Daermon sprinted after a passing wagon, vaulted onto the tailgate, and wedged himself underneath. To panic the teamster, he cast Minor Illusion, conjuring the roar of a bear. The horses bolted. A spectral Mage Hand released the brake, and suddenly the cart careened through Vallaki's streets, bouncing furniture and paintings into the mud.For a few glorious seconds, the trick worked. Then Daermon miscalculated. He locked the wheels too hard, and the wagon jackknifed. Horses tumbled and broke bones. Daermon rolled out battered but intact. Amid the wreckage, lying improbably untouched, was Lady Vallakovich's wedding dress. He grabbed it and vanished before the townsfolk could swarm. A grim prize, bought with shattered animals. While Daermon played daredevil, another soul entered the stage: Urihorn Tenpenny, a halfling Beastmaster ranger from Falkovnia, accompanied by his loyal beast. Halflings are often underestimated — hobbit-sized, quick-footed, more grit than glory. Urihorn had no illusions about Barovia. He bribed his way through Vallaki's gates, ignored mockery, and walked into the Blue Water Inn.There he met Rictavio, the eccentric entertainer. Except Rictavio shimmered into his true form: Rudolf van Richten, the legendary vampire hunter. Van Richten warned Urihorn that Strahd was no ordinary vampire — he was bound to the land, necromancer and tyrant both, aided by beasts and Vistani alike. He handed Urihorn a potion of greater healing and one warning: avoid a band of adventurers suspected of serving Strahd. Of course, those adventurers were Radley, Traxidor, and Daermon. Fate laughs loudest in Barovia. While Daermon slinked back with the dress and Urihorn sized up new allies, Radley and Traxidor drew too much attention. Townsfolk spotted them and shouted: “Those are the strangers Lady Wachter wants!” A mob surged, guards in tow. This was not a duel against monsters but a nightmare of pitchforks and fists. Radley fought with steel and firebolts, Traxidor blasted Thunderwave to scatter attackers and poured healing magic to keep them standing. They even flung coins into the dirt as bribes. Nothing worked. Every guard cut down was replaced by half a dozen zealots. Numbers crushed them. The mob swarmed, bodies pressed in, and the two heroes were beaten into submission. Captured, trophies for Vallaki's new order.Back at the inn, Daermon and Urihorn shook hands, unaware their friends were already in chains. If Session Sixteen was gothic tragedy, Session Seventeen was chaos wrapped in cruelty. Daermon's runaway wagon gambit gave us comedy; the mob gave us horror. The party lost Sören but gained Urihorn. They recovered the wedding dress but lost Radley and Traxidor. They met Van Richten, but under suspicion of being Strahd's spies. In Barovia, victory is always poisoned.

Rudolf IV of Habsburg (1339–1365), son of Albrecht “the Wise,” reigned as Duke of Austria for just seven years but left a lasting mark. Born when the dynasty seemed close to extinction, Rudolf secured Austria's survival and prestige. Politically, he sought to elevate Vienna by founding the University of Vienna (1365) and beginning construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral. Though he fulfilled his father's ambition to gain the Tyrol, the family fell behind their rivals, namely the Luxemburgs.Rudolf's most audacious act was the Privilegium Maius, a set of forged charters claiming ancient Roman emperors had granted Austria near-sovereign status, primogeniture, and the unique title of Archduke. Though denounced by Petrarch as absurd, the documents shaped Habsburg identity for centuries and underpinned later power.By creating myths of divine and heroic origins, Rudolf forged a sense of Habsburg exceptionalism. Though dying young without heirs, he truly was “the Founder.”The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. The Habsburg dynasty, originating from Radobot's castle in 11th-century Switzerland, rose from obscurity to European prominence. In 1273 Rudolf of Habsburg was elected King of the Romans. Far from the later myth of a poor, humble count, Rudolf was wealthy, shrewd, and ruthless. He expanded his family's holdings through inheritance, war, and diplomacy, eventually securing Austria and Styria after defeating Ottokar II of Bohemia—an acquisition that became the dynasty's heartland.Rudolf's hopes to found a hereditary imperial dynasty failed, and his son Albrecht I was murdered in 1308. For decades, the Habsburgs teetered on decline. Friedrich “the Handsome” briefly contended for the throne but left little mark. His brother Albrecht II “the Wise” revived the family, gaining Carinthia and Carniola in 1335 and shifting focus to Austria. Near extinction due to lack of heirs, the dynasty was saved when Albrecht's wife Joan miraculously bore sons, including Rudolf IV, who would secure the Habsburg future. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Rudolf Steiner is a famous author and mystic, but one of his most infamous lines about medicine sounds more like prophecy. Steiner said in 1917: “I have told you that the spirits of darkness are going to inspire their human hosts, in whom they will be dwelling, to find a vaccine that will drive all inclination towards spirituality out of people's souls when they are still very young, and this will happen in a roundabout way through the living body.” Although vaccines have been around since 1798 with Edward Jenner, they were not then nor during Steiner's time anything like they are today. While RFK Jr. has been credited with the CDC ACIP recommendation for the HHS to remove thirmerosal from all U.S. influenza vaccines, and the cutting of mRNA funding, he has also launched a universal vaccine platform, allowed certain mRNA programs to proceed, and freed up money for gene-therapy cancer vaccines. Kennedy's MAHA reports have also been riddled with AI, typos, and no action on pesticides. Furthermore, he wrote in his book, The Real Anthony Fauci, about a Bill Gates and Google plan to develop a Fauci-favorite universal influenza vaccine, and yet he expanded the research, protected it, and now backs it? Is he the victim of Steiner's “spirits of darkness”?*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Rudolf Stingel talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Stingel was born in 1956 in Merano, South Tyrol, Italy, and lives in New York. He explores myriad ways of making paintings and extending the idea of what painting might be. With both a love of his medium and skepticism about the possibility of creating something new from such a time-honoured discipline, Rudolf explores a range of forms of painting, from abstraction to photorealism. He emerged in the 1980s, a period in which painting was condemned to obsolescence by some prominent critics, but he met this dismissal with a tangible sense of liberation, pushing painting beyond its traditional formats and contexts into the realms of sculpture and installation, while also engaging with historical genres and with key figures and objects in art history. The result is a body of work that is simultaneously weighty in the seriousness with which it questions painting and fleet-footed in the way that it relentlessly shifts, doubles-back and invents. Stingel reflects on his constant irreverence for convention, his attempts to “crank up the volume” in his groups of paintings and installation, the subtle strain of autobiography through his work. He discusses the early influence of Pablo Picasso, the enduring impact of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the energy given to him by close friendships with artists including Urs Fischer and Maurizio Cattelan. He talks about the impact of films by Marguerite Duras and the music of Brian Eno. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including those about the art he would like to live with and the rituals of studio life.Rudolf Stingel: Vineyard Paintings, Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London, until 20 September; Les yeux dans les yeux: portraits from the Pinault Collection, Couvent des Jacobins, Rennes, France, until 14 September Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Limitless. Today we're joined by Luke Drago and Rudolf, authors of the powerful essay series "The Intelligence Curse." Together, we explore a future where artificial general intelligence (AGI) threatens to upend the economic and social contracts that underpin modern civilization. Will AI empower us or make us obsolete? We unpack how labor-replacing AI could dismantle the very incentives that once gave rise to liberal democracies, social mobility, and human-centered innovation—and what it might take to build a future worth living in. ------

During the 15th-century, citizens of Nuremberg, Germany, experienced spectacular Carnival parades highlighted by the appearance of floats known as "hells." Featuring immense figures, including dragons, ogres, and man-eating giants, these hells were also peopled with costumed performers and enhanced with mechanized effects and pyrotechnics. In this episode, adapted from a chapter of Mr. Ridenour's new book, A Season of Madness: Fools, Monsters and Marvels of the Old-World Carnival, we examine the Nuremberg parade, the Schembartlauf, as it evolves from costumed dance performances staged by the local Butcher's Guild in the mid-1 4th-century into a procession of fantastic and elaborately costumed figures, and finally -- in 1475 - into a showcase for the rolling hells. We begin, however, with an examination of a historical anecdotes sometimes presented as forerunners of the Carnival parades, and of the Schembartlauf in particular, including two sometimes put forward to support a "pagan survival" theory. The first involves a ceremonial wagon housing a figure of the putative fertility goddess, Nerthus, hauled about by Germanic peoples in the first century and mentioned in Tacitus' Germania. The second, also involving a wagon with fertility figure, is described by Gregory of Tours as being hauled through farmers' fields in the 6th-century. Period illustration of costumed figure from a Schembartbuch. Period illustration of costumed figure from a Schembartbuch. A third case involves the mysterious "land-ship," a full-scale wheeled ship hauled from Germany into Belgium, and the Netherlands in 1135. Mentioned exclusively by the Flemish abbot, composer, and chronicler Rudolf of St. Trond in his Gesta Abbatum Trudonensium (Deeds of the Abbots of Trond), it's characterized by the abbot as a sort of pagan temple on wheels and locus of orgiastic behavior, the precise purpose and nature of this peculiar incident remains largely a mystery. We then hear a comic incident imagined in the early 13th-century story of the knight Parzival as told by Wolfram von Eschenbach. By way of analogy to the character's ludicrous behavior, Carnival is mentioned for the first time, or more specifically von Eschenbach use the German word for Carnival, specifically the Carnival of Germany's southwest called "Fastnacht." Our story of the Schembartlauf concludes the show with a description of its ironic downfall through local intrigues fired by the Protestant Reformation. Worth mentioning also, in our Schembart segment, is the heated scholarly debate around objects depicted in period illustrations, which look for all the world like oversized pyrotechnic artichokes. New Patreon rewards related to Mr. Ridenour's Carnival book are also announced in this episode, along with related Carnival-themed merch in our Etsy shop, including our "Party Like it's 1598" shirts featuring Schembart figures.
In this episode, Brody dives into the chilling story of Eric Robert Rudolf, the notorious fugitive who spent five years hiding in the small town of Andrews, NC, after committing multiple bombings. Brody recounts his own experiences with the manhunt and explores Rudolf's twisted belief that he was carrying out God's will. The conversation shifts to the deeper spiritual implications, as Brody and JB reflect on the importance of authentic Christian representation, addressing how poor examples of faith can challenge others' belief while emphasizing the power of living out Christ's love. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion on faith, hypocrisy, and personal responsibility.- Respond Women's RetreatSend us a textPlease leave a review on Apple or Spotify to help improve No Sanity Required and help others grow in their faith. In a cinema in south-west Germany, an audience is gathered to watch an Oscar-winning film, The Zone of Interest, about the life of Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz. Those present comprise Jewish people from around the world, and the special guest is Rudolf's grandson, Kai.The topic was rarely visited during Kai's childhood. It was only after a school history lesson that he began to comprehend Rudolf's role as head of the largest mass murder site in history. Journalist Shiroma Silva talks to Pastor Kai Höss as he seeks to disabuse congregations of the thinking that has all too often blamed Jewish people for all the world's ills, and describes himself as a Gentile who has been saved by Jewish leaders.
