At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band'   There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mold - the missing reel was probably thrown away.. The missing segment here, starting with 'China Cat' is from a Dick Latvala cassette.    The fire marshall was apparently giving the band a hard time and threatening to shut the show down, which accounts for some of the warnings about keeping the aisle clear..      Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/22/1973 - Thursday   One [1:43:22]    The Promised Land [2:58]  Sugaree [7:34]  Mexicali Blues [3:23]  They Love Each Other [5:09]  Looks Like Rain [7:11]  Deal [4:32]  Beat It On Down The Line [3:07]  Bird Song [11:26]  Jack Straw [4:32]  Box Of Rain [4:38]  You Ain't Woman Enough [3:00]  The Race Is On [2:54]  Row Jimmy [7:44]  El Paso [4:15]  China Cat Sunflower [6:02] > Jam [1:48] > I Know You Rider [5:08]  Playing In The Band [15:01]    You can listen to this week's Dead here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032125.mp3     As always thanks for your kind support.

Happy New Year! ... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025... This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night'). The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great..  All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week..    Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday One      Dancing In The Street [#8:29]   Mr. Charlie [3:38]   Brown Eyed Women [4:22]   Beat It On Down The Line [2:56]   You Win Again [3:36]   Jack Straw [4:31]   Sugaree [7:01]   El Paso [4:14]>   Chinatown Shuffle [2:35]   Tennessee Jed [6:41]   Mexicali Blues [3:16]   China Cat Sunflower [4:40] > I Know You Rider [5:18]   Next Time You See Me [4:30]   Playing In The Band [6:09]   Loser [6:15]   One More Saturday Night (1) [4:23#]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122724.mp3  Thanks for your support this year.. it means alot..  Happy New Year.

This week's Deadpod takes us down south to Atlanta Georgia, where the Dead played the first of 36 shows at the Omni back on December 12, 1973. This long and very tasty first set features many of the classics, all played quite well. It features only the second time that 'Peggy-O' was played, great sound throughout, and a very long and spacey 'Playin' In the Band' to end this first set.  Next week we'll play both set 2 and the soundchecks which are amazing in themselves.. Howdy! I figured it was about time to get back in the saddle and get another Deadpod out to my wonderful audience.. First off thanks for your kind get well wishes! They all have meant so much..forgive me for not answering each of them, but I'm having some serious trouble typing with alot of numbness in my right hand since my operation.. This week I thought it appropriate to listen to a fine show from the great state of North Carolina, I could only wish that I could help the folks there who have been ravaged by the terrible storms..  This is a well played show from the fall of '89.. a nice Foolish Heart starts things, and frankly I enjoyed every song in this first set. The highlight might be 'Bird Song' where Jerry  uses a number of ineresting MIDI effects...  The Johnny B Goode encore is also a nice touch..      Grateful Dead Charlotte Coliseum Charlotte, NC 10/22/1989 - Sunday One       Foolish Heart [8:03]   New Minglewood Blues [7:28]   Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [5:56]   Queen Jane Approximately [6:00]   Ramble On Rose [6:47]   Beat It On Down The Line [3:13]   Bird Song [14:12]   Johnny B. This week we conclude the band's performance on July 26, 1972 at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon.  Clearly the 'Dark Star' we open with is the highlight of this set, if not the show. It traverses the heavens for over half and hour and features some excellent improvisational displays (see the Dark Star map below). It leads into a lovely and soulful 'Comes A Time'. 'Sugar Mag' follows to get things rockin' again, and that leads into a 'Brown Eyed Women' which is unfortunately cut on the tape. Another Jerry ballad  - 'Stella Blue' follows and then the band revs it up for a fine 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' conclusion to this epic set.  'One More Saturday Night' is the encore, although this one was played on Wednesday :)   Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 7/26/1972 - Wednesday Two (con't): Dark Star [31:13] (5) > Comes A Time [7:03] Sugar Magnolia [7:56] Brown Eyed Women [3#:38] Beat It On Down The Line [3:06] Stella Blue [8:06] Not Fade Away [5:15] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:20] > Not Fade Away [3:22] Encore      One More Saturday Night [5:32] (5) Dark Star Map: Dark Star theme/Jam [9:22] > theme/Verse one [1:49] > Spacy Jam [1:08] > Bass and Drums [1:05] > Bass, Drums and Piano [1:10] > All but Jerry Jam [0:30] > Jam [3:45] > Spacier [1:15] > Space [4:05] > tiger [1:00] > Uptempo Spacy Jam [2:50] > theme/Verse 2 [2:53] > Comes a time.   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080224.mp3  hard to believe it's time for another 'Days Between'.... hope you are well and thanks  for your kind support.

This week the Deadpod goes back 51 years to February 15, 1973 when the Grateful Dead played a massive show in Madison Wisconsin. this first set clocks in at about 100 minute... it starts with a song they debuted about a week earlier 'Loose Lucy'. They are still warming up when they then 'Beat It On Down The Line'. Several favorites follow, but things really get rolling with a fine, up tempo 'Row Jimmy'. The highlights of the set follow, with a wonderful 'China Cat >I Know You Rider' and a jamming 'Playing In The Band'. We're stepping it up this week.. yes! believe it or not, this week's Deadpod is probably even hotter than last week's show from 1973! This one comes from May 25, 1974 at Santa Barbra California. A beautiful afternoon show that must have seemed to go on forever...  The first set starts with a U.S. Blues.. a great way to start a show and start this 13 song first set! The entire set is smoking hot, and it has a pedigree - as it comes from Dick Latvala's cassette, so the sound is great.  Some of the highlights include a wonderful 'Jack Straw', a stand alone 'Scarlet', Weir 'takes a bottle, cracks him in the jaw' on 'Me & My Uncle', but the true highlight of the set and probably the show is the mind-bending 'China Cat>I Know Your Rider' , in particular the great jamming in the transition - not to be missed. Billy K is on it..      Grateful Dead Campus Stadium - University Of California Santa Barbara, CA 5/25/1974 - Saturday     One     U.S. Blues [5:30] Mexicali Blues [3:22] Deal [4:14] Jack Straw [4:43] Scarlet Begonias [4:34] Beat It On Down The Line [3:02] Brown Eyed Women [4:29] Me And My Uncle [2:45] Sugaree [6:34] El Paso [4:03] China Cat Sunflower [8:20] > I Know You Rider [4:19] Around And Around [4:36]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051923.mp3  Thank you for your kind support - I couldn't publish the Deadpod without your help!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat,  'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May.  This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of  prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles!   Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set..    Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/21/1973 - Wednesday One     [1:39:37] Bertha [5:32] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Wave That Flag [5:30] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Tennessee Jed [7:34] Box Of Rain [4:46] You Ain't Woman Enough [2:59] Jack Straw [4:37] Row Jimmy [7:38] Beat It On Down The Line [2:58] Here Comes Sunshine [8:05] The Race Is On [2:44] Loser [6:33] El Paso [4:09] China Cat Sunflower [7:18] > I Know You Rider [4:31] Playing In The Band [15:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050523.mp3  We'll enjoy set 2 next week...  " "Well hop in the hack turn on the key Pop in the clutch let the wheels roll free Come on honey, let me sing them away Come on honey, let me sing them away Oh, honey, let me sing your blues away"

This week's Deadpod features another fabulous show from 1973. This week's show comes shortly after the death of Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan on the 8th of February 1973, and is the 2nd night of a three night run at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY, on March 16, 1973.  Folks this is a massive 14 song first set, and the come out of the gate flying with a high energy 'China>Rider', complete with a great, perhaps the first, 'feelin' groovy' jam in the transition. The new 'Wave That Flag' follows with some nice keyboard work from Keith. A fine version of 'Looks Like Rain' follows, introduced with a nice intro from Phil. There are highlights throughout the rest of this set, including an early version of 'They Love Each Other' but the closing 'Playin' In the Band' is sure to bring some smiles....      Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 3/16/1973 - Friday One China Cat Sunflower [6:09] > Jam [1:51] > I Know You Rider [4:33] Jack Straw [4:32] Wave That Flag [5:35] Looks Like Rain [7:01] Ramble On Rose [6:23] Box Of Rain [4:43] Beat It On Down The Line [3:17] They Love Each Other [5:28] El Paso [4:34] Row Jimmy [7:58] Mexicali Blues [3:23] Bird Song Playing In The Band  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030323.mp3  Keep on rollin' just a mile to go...

Think that a show from 56 years ago doesn't rock? If so I challenge you to listen to this week's Deadpod... from November 19, 1966 in San Francisco, this primal Dead will surely knock your socks off... Such amazing energy and emotion on display here. The boys are spreading their wings while still exploring the legacy of the blues in the midst of Beatle mania.  There are many highlights here, but I have to call out 'Cream Puff War', and 'Dancin' In The Streets' (despite the tragic cut at the end) as virtuoso examples of primal Grateful Dead.  The entire second set (what we have of it) is a testament to the power and presence of Pigpen. Enough said.      Grateful Dead Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco, CA 11/19/1966 - Saturday One     Cold Rain And Snow [3:05] Hi-Heel Sneakers [4:07] Pain In My Heart [2:52] Beat It On Down The Line [2:24] Cream Puff War [7:27] Same Thing [9:59] He Was A Friend Of Mine [4:32] Dancin' In The Street [5:59#] Two     Smokestack Lightning [8:41] > King Bee [5:23] Midnight Hour [18:09]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120222.mp3 Thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!

Grateful Dead concerts in the month of January are rather sparse, however one exception is the west coast run that took place in January of 1978.  This week's show took place on January 13, 1978 in Santa Barbara California. It starts out with a nicely played 'Mississippi Half-Step' - while Jerry's voice is suffering a bit from the laryngitis he fought through on this tour - his playing more than makes up for it I think throughout. A rather unusual 'Mexicali Blues'>'Big River' follows, with some jump in it! There is an unfortunate patch in the 'Brown Eyed Women' however it is still quite well played. Lesh is well represented on this soundboard. Another highlight here is the fine version of 'Candyman'.      Grateful Dead Arlington Theatre Santa Barbara, CA 1/13/78 - Friday     One     Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [8:49] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] > Big River [5:55] ; Candyman [6:59] ; It's All Over Now [7:15] ; Brown Eyed Women [3:00#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:31] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:47] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:31] > Supplication [6:06]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012122.mp3  Thank you for your kind support!

This week we stay on the Continent for a show that took place on October 12, 1981 at the Olympia Halle in Munich, West Germany during the band's Fall European Tour. For the most part this is quite an excellent recording, although it does have a couple patches..  They come out firing on an up-tempo 'Jack Straw', then Garcia delivers a more laid back selection with a pretty 'Candyman'. The 'Little Red Rooster' that follows is one of my favorite versions of this tune they delivered - check it out! Brent is all over these songs, if you are a fan you're going to enjoy this set. Some other highlights include an insane 'Passenger' and the set closing 'China>Rider' .. don't miss this one.      Grateful Dead Olympia Halle Munich, West Germany 10/12/81 - Monday One     Jack Straw [6:02] ; Candyman [6:33] > Little Red Rooster [8:21] ; Cumberland Blues [5:17] ; Beat It On Down The Line [2:57] ; Ramble On Rose [7:32] ; (1) Mama Tried [2:30] > Mexicali Blues [2:50#] ; Althea [9:12] ; Passenger [5:09] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:46] > I Know You Rider [5:59]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092421.mp3    Thanks so much for your kind support!  Be well and keep on..

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful recording of the band's performance in Paris France on September 20, 1974. This is a splendid recording, and a very interesting performance. The band opens with a spirited 'Cumberland Blues' followed by a nice 'Jack Straw'. The first-set 'Scarlet Begonias' features some very nice Phil leads. Bobby's vocals are top-notch on the 'Black Throated Wind' that follows. The 'Friend of the Devil' that is performed afterwards, is one of the last 'fast' versions the band played. We get to hear a full 'Weather Report Suite' highlighted by some nice keyboard work by Keith. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Stella Blue'. The 'Around and Around that closes the set has a unique feel to it..    Grateful Dead Palais des Sports Paris, France 9/20/74 - Friday     One     Cumberland Blues [5:45]   Jack Straw [5:10]   It Must Have Been The Roses [5:26]   Beat It On Down The Line [3:15]   Scarlet Begonias [9:52]   Black Throated Wind [6:22]   Friend Of The Devil [3:58]   El Paso [4:30]   Row Jimmy [8:55]   Weather Report Suite Prelude [1:15] > Weather Report Suite Part 1 [3:50] > Let It Grow [10:35] > Stella Blue [8:15]   Around And Around [4:50]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091021.mp3  As always, a big thank you for your support of the Deadpod!  I'll be in Clarkston tonight for Dead & Co. - looking forward to it!

This week we bring you a fine recording of an often overlooked gem from the Summer of 1973. This comes to us from RFK Stadium in Washington DC on Saturday, June 9, 1973. This date is often overlooked in favor of the next day (which we played back in '08). On both dates, the band shared the bill with the Allman Brothers. On this very hot day, the Dead opened, and played two excellent sets.  The first set, which we'll hear this week, while not featuring any extended jams, nevertheless delivers some fantastic versions of many of their favorites. As with most shows from '73 there are too many treats to mention here, however I would advise you to listen in particular to the 'Loose Lucy'. With a flub on the last verse, Garcia leads the boys on an excellent blues flavored jam, which for me is the highlight  of the set. Phil delivers a wonderful vocal performance on 'Box of Rain' as well.   Grateful Dead RFK Stadium Washington, DC 6/9/73 - Saturday  One      The Promised Land ; Deal ; Looks Like Rain ; They Love Each Other ; Jack Straw ; Loose Lucy ; Mexicali Blues ; Row Jimmy ; El Paso ; Box Of Rain ; Sugaree ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Tennessee Jed  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061121.mp3  A great example of the wonders of the Wall of Sound!  thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod. itu

Spring has sprung a bit earlier than usual here in the north, and it's a perfect time to break out the sweet, silky sounds of the Grateful Dead from 1977.. Here's a beauty from March 20, 1977 at the Winterland in San Francisco.  As usual its marked by the extremely smooth and intricate ensemble playing that characterize the year. The band is clearly paying attention to and responding to each other. I'd argue that every song in this first set has its moments - there's even a fun little Jerry run in El Paso. Deal builds and builds to a rousing climax. Cassidy shows off a beautiful arrangement highlighting every member's contribution to the whole. Peggy-O is slow and sweet, love Keith's piano here and Jerry has some runs I've not heard before.  It seems unfair not to single out each of these songs for their beauty..this is a remarkably nice recording as well,  but I just want to also point to the stand-alone Scarlet Begonias that ends this first set.   Never miss a Sunday show )      Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 3/20/77 - Sunday     One     New Minglewood Blues [4:46] ; Ramble On Rose [7:35] ; El Paso [4:12] ; Deal [5:32] ; Cassidy [4:29] ; Peggy-O [7:15] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:41] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:18] ; Estimated Prophet [8:01] ; Scarlet Begonias [12:45]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032621.mp3  Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!  "Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine"

Notable moments include a 22 beat start to 'Beat It On Down The Line', some great Keith throughout, a lovely 'It Must Have Been The Roses', the elusive 'Loose Lucy' and to top everything off, a very long and spacy 'Playin' In the Band' which closes the set and is punctuated with Garcia teasing the 'Slipknot!' jam in several spots.      Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 2/22/74 - Friday     One   U.S. Blues [5:27] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:22] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:52] ; Mexicali Blues [3:36] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [4:43] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; They Love Each Other [5:39] ; Big River [5:08] ; Loose Lucy [6:35] ; El Paso [4:33] ; Row Jimmy [8:30] ; Playing In The Band [20:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022621.mp3    thanks for your kind support

It's a new year but I've decided to go *way* back for some primal Dead on this week's Deadpod.  This comes to us from January 17th, 1968 at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. What a treasure of early/classic tunes we have here! Now I'll admit, the sound is sometimes muddy and the vocals are at times less than clear.. however give the age and provinance of this recording I thought it very worth listening to and hope you enjoy it as well.  Some of the highlights of course are Pigpen on the Lovelight, and check out the fast pacing throughout. Jerry sounds so different on China Cat! I always love hearing the old 'New Potato Caboose' and 'Born Cross-eyed', but what is probably the highlight is the great almost 16 minute 'Spanish Jam'.  The sound is psychedelic throughout, and if you can overlook the flaws I think you will enjoy this return to some of the roots of our favorite band!    Grateful Dead Carousel Ballroom San Francisco, CA 1/17/68 - Wednesday     One     Turn On Your Love Light [15:22] % Dark Star [#4:48] > China Cat Sunflower [4:04] > The Eleven [10:01] > New Potato Caboose [8:30] > Born Cross-Eyed [2:34] > Spanish Jam [15:47]   Two      Beat It On Down The Line [2:52] ; Morning Dew [7:43] ; Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment [10:05] ; Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [13:49]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012221.mp3   Thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!  ... and leave it on!

For your Christmas week enjoyment.. a stunner from very late Fall, 1971..  Pig and Keith were both in fine form on this night at the Fabulous Fox.. This first set is a fine, uptempo collection highlighted, I think with the two Pig tunes, 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Next Time You See Me', as well as a great 'Loser' and 'Jack Straw'. Jerry kind of misses some of the lyrics on 'Tennesee Jed' but makes up for that with some great guitar work on that one.  I'll present the second set for your enjoyment Christmas morning..      Grateful Dead Fox Theatre St. Louis, MO 12/10/71 - Friday One      Bertha [5:52] ; Me And My Uncle [3:01] ; Mr. Charlie [3:46] ; Loser [6:30] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:04] ; Sugaree [7:16] ; Jack Straw [4:54] ; Next Time You See Me [4:06] ; Tennessee Jed [7:08] ; El Paso [4:21] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:46] ; Casey Jones [5:33]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121820.mp3  Thank you for all the kindness and love.

Long considered a classic show, I decided to start off our November here on the Deadpod with this gem from 1972.. from November 19th in Houston Texas. While this tape does have some faults I think overall it is well worth a listen.. The band was originally scheduled to play this show with the Allman Brothers, but the tragic death of bassist Barry Oakley the prior week left them to fill the evening alone - and they more than did..  The opening 'Bertha' suffers from poor mixing but that clears up in time.. nice versions of Uncle, Sugaree and BIODTL follow but things heat up with a wonderful 'Bird Song'. A still relatively new 'Black-Throated Wind' is quite entertaining. Another highlight is one of the best versions of both 'Box of Rain' and 'Tomorrow is Forever'.. Of course the 20 minute long 'Playin' In The Band' is a highlight for any of us who enjoy the spaces the band explores..      Grateful Dead Hofheinz Pavilion - University of Houston Houston, TX 11/19/72 - Sunday     One     Bertha ; Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree [6:47] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:02] ; Bird Song [10:44] ; Black Throated Wind [6:28] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:10] ; Mexicali Blues [3:20] ; Box Of Rain [4:40] ; Tomorrow Is Forever [5:21] ; Big River [4:07] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:04] > I Know You Rider [4:46] ; Playing In The Band [20:12] ; Casey Jones [5:48]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110620.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod !

This week the Deadpod presents the second set from the band's performance back on September 23, 1972 at Waterbury CT. Another quite long, very interesting set awaits as the band starts out rockin' with a trifecta of Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story to get the place going. After a nice 'Brown-Eyed Women' they break out Chuck Berry's 'Around and Around' for the first time in 105 shows (4/18/71). They follow that breakout with the first rendition of 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' in 156 shows (11/8/70). Perhaps the highlight of this follows with the last 'Crytpical Envelopment' performed until June of 1985. A massive 'Other One' flows out of drums and leads into the post-drum segment which would have made a quite respectable second set of its' own. Just listen to the incredible energy on that 'Sugar Magnolia'!     Grateful Dead Palace Theatre Waterbury, CT 9/23/72 - Saturday Two The Promised Land [2:52] > Bertha [5:43] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:55] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:53] (2) ; Around And Around [4:28] ; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [7:28] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:59] > Drums [3:25] > The Other One [22:44] > Wharf Rat [9:38] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:17] ; Ramble On Rose [6:27] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:05] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:00] > Not Fade Away [5:#34] > One More Saturday Night [4:42]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092520.mp3  Enjoy and thanks for your kind support.

August flies... and we are favored this week with a second set from August 12, 1972 in Sacramento California. While most of the band's performances are quite good from this time, each are unique and this second set contains some very good and unique moments.  The recording unfortunately has a short cut in the opening of the first selection, 'Greatest Story Ever Told', but it, and the following 'Ramble On Rose, and 'Beat It On Down The Line' are rocking, and this is quite a fine recording in my opinion. Jerry's guitar has that sweet twangy tone that sounds, to me so western.. A nice 'He's Gone' follows, leading into the real meat of this set. Following a sort 'Drums' Phil thunders us into 'The Other One'. While I've long since given up rating these, I think its safe to say this one is a keeper. This one really gets rolling and after some outstanding extraterritorial  exploration leads into an unexpected, but poignant 'Black Peter'. The band returns to 'The Other One' for a short reprise with some wonderful piano work by Keith. They come to a stop before returning to a smokin' 'Truckin'.  The set closes with 'Mississipi Half-Step' into 'Sugar Magnolia' (again with a unfortunate cut).  'One More Saturday Night' closes what was surely quite an evening...      Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/72 - Saturday Two     Greatest Story Ever Told [#5:10] ; Ramble On Rose [5:51] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:07] ; He's Gone [8:53] > Drums [2:48] > The Other One [16:45] > Black Peter [8:54] > The Other One [3:45] ; Truckin' [11:44] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:05] > Sugar Magnolia [3:21#] Encore     One More Saturday Night    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082120.mp3  Thank you for your support of the Deadpod, which allows us to continue these shows weekly!

Might you need some energy after some time cooped up with 'social distancing'? Well I think this show will have you covered.. true primal Dead here.. the frantic scorching solos from Garcia on most of these might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this is a great presentation of where the band came from and what the sound was like back in 1967. This was the third time they had played Winterland and the day after their first album had been released. The Pigpen tunes here are real gems. He sounds on top of his game. Chuck Berry was also on this bill, and played between the 1st and 2nd Dead sets.  The second set in particular is fascinating. Check out the great electric versions of 'Cream Puff War' and 'Viola Lee Blues' they practically blow the roof off the place !   There are some understandable flaws in this recording and a couple cuts.. still I hope it brings a smile and gives you a respite from our dystopian present.   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA 3/18/67 Set 1 1.  Me And My Uncle 2.  Next Time You See Me 3.  He Was A Friend Of Mine 4.  Smokestack Lightnin' 5.  Morning Dew 6.  It Hurts Me Too 7.  Beat It On Down The Line 8.  Banter 9.  Dancin' In The Streets Set 2 1. This week brings a *huge* first set Deadpod for you, from the famous run of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City on March 23, 1972. This set runs over 2 hours and contains 18 songs!  The band was gearing up for the upcoming Europe tour and I think this is one of the best shows of that run. Some of the many highlights include a great 'I Know You Rider' , Pigpen's 'Chinatown Shuffle', the third ever 'Looks Like Rain' with Jerry on the pedal steel, Keith does some great work on 'You Win Again'. The 'Jack Straw' is spot on, and 'Me & Bobby McGee' is one of their best.  I'm sure in these two hours you'll find some favorites of your own!    Grateful Dead Academy of Music New York, NY 3/23/72 - Thursday One     China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Black Throated Wind ; Chinatown Shuffle ; Brown Eyed Women ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Cumberland Blues ; Looks Like Rain ; Mr. Charlie ; Tennessee Jed ; El Paso ; You Win Again ; Jack Straw ; Next Time You See Me ; Playing In The Band ; Comes A Time [7:30] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:53] ; CaseyJones [5:44]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031320.mp3   Finally, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Phil Lesh who turns 80 on Sunday!!

Mexicalli follows then one of the highlights of this first set is a strong 'Here Comes Sunshine'. They 'Beat it Down the Line', then a 1st set 'Ship of Fools'. 'Jack Straw' and 'Deal' follows, then a great rocking trifecta of 'Promised Land', 'Bertha', and 'Greatest Story Ever Told' to end this first set.  We will get to hear the second set next week..    Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 2/23/74 - Saturday     One     Around And Around [4:46] ; Dire Wolf [4:15] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:34] ; Sugaree [7:01] ; Mexicali Blues [3:17] ; Here Comes Sunshine [9:#17] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:25] ; Ship Of Fools [5:16] ; Jack Straw [4:33] ; Deal [4:18] ; The Promised Land [3:00] > Bertha [5:51] > Greatest Story Ever Told [5:06]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021320.mp3   So appreciate you listening and  your kind support!    Be kind ;)

On this week's Deadpod we feature a somewhat rare 'ish' show from November 24, 1972 Dallas Texas.  Quite a well-played show, it has  a few hiccups here and there, but overall a nice recording as well. Bobby tells us that Pigpen isn't here, at the end of Don't Ease, as he is home sick. I think Jerry throughout is quite on it. That today marks 24 years since Jerry Garcia died, strikes me as a sobering reminder of my own mortality, of how quickly our lives pass, but also as a reminder that I was fortunate to get to see him perform and experience the magic that was in this music. Like every edition of the Deadpod, this week we again celebrate that music, this time with one of their earlier performances, when they were all young and full of boundless energy and enthusiasm. Let the music carry them, and us as we go along on this ride, to places words don't describe. This week we have an intimate performance, and the very first Rex Benefit show which happened to be the first show performed in 1984. This comes from the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael, CA on March 28th, 1984. Even at this time, this was one of the smallest venues the band would preform in, and since it was a Rex Benefit show, you get the feeling that they were trying to put on a special show for family and friends. While the first set doesn't contain the surprises of set 2, its still a very nice and relaxing hour of music. As we roll into Thanksgiving week, here is an outstanding first set from a great tour that took place during the Fall of 1971. This is from November 14th, 1971 at Fort Worth Texas. They open with a fine 'Bertha' with Keith's piano leading the way.. they follow with a 25-beat 'Beat It On Down the Line', but Billy stops at 24 so they reset with Garcia calling for '3'...it crackles. 'China Cat' follows with some wonderful soaring Garcia leads. the train starts rollin' in the fine transition into 'I Know You Rider' and I can just imagine the dancing! Don't overlook the fine 'El Paso' that follows, it has some beautiful Garcia throughout.. I won't try and describe each of these standards - some were new at the time others not, but this is a great recording of a period when the band was transitioning from its earlier more 'primal' sound to a bit slower tempo, '72 pace.     Grateful Dead Texas Christian University Fort Worth, TX 11/14/71 - Sunday One Bertha [5:54] Beat It On Down The Line [3:00] China Cat Sunflower [5:24] > I Know You Rider [5:18] El Paso [4:34] > Sugaree [6:27] Jack Straw [4:52] Big Railroad Blues [3:20] Me And Bobby McGee [5:31] Loser [6:24] Playing In The Band [5:59] Tennessee Jed [6:47] You Win Again [2:17] Mexicali Blues [3:18] Casey Jones [5:25] One More Saturday Night [4:30]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111618.mp3     I hope you all have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving! I don't often feature audience recordings on the Deadpod but this one is so clean and of such a great show that I decided to share it this week.. this comes to us from October 9th, 1982 at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto, CA. This was by all reports, a fun, sunny day on which both band and audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves and each other. You can hear it in the songs.. some favorites of mine 'On The Road Again' with a nice transition into 'Beat It On Down The Line'.. a great version of 'West L.A. Fadeaway' a song I usually don't much care for.. 'Dupree's' is fun as well.. and the ending 'Music Never Stops' into 'Deal' is smoking.. This was supposed to be from Rango Keshavan's Master recording, as mastered by Charlie Miller.. wonderfully sounding tape.. I hope you enjoy it!     Grateful Dead Frost Amphitheatre - Stanford University Palo Alto, CA 10/9/82 - Saturday   One Alabama Getaway [4:58] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:02] They Love Each Other [7:34] On The Road Again [3:32] > Beat It On Down The Line [3:22] West L.A. This week's Deadpod features a show from 46 years ago at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley CA. This run, which lead up to the famous show at Veneta Oregon on the 27th, often is overlooked, but is a stellar example of why the band were at the top of their game during this period. While I previously featured the next night of this run, this may well be the better of those two. While the playing is wonderful throughout (and perhaps even more spacy and exciting in set 2) the jam between 'China->Rider', the 'Bird Song' and of course 'Playin in the Band' make this a memorable first set.         Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 8/24/72 - Thursday   One The Promised Land [2:58] Sugaree [6:43] Jack Straw [5:51]  China Cat Sunflower [7:09] > I Know You Rider [4:49] Me And My Uncle [3:02] Bird Song [9:12] Beat It On Down The Line [3:05] Tennessee Jed [7:31] Playing In The Band [15:04] Casey Jones [5:47]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082418.mp3   My thanks to those able to support the Deadpod with their kind contributions.   Be kind.

As summer flies, it seems this might be a good choice to wrap up the 'days between' and lead us into the rest of August; a true classic from August 6th, 1974 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey. The band is full on throughout this fabulous first set clocks in at over 90 minutes with some of the best versions of some of these standards that you'll find during 1974. You can feel the energy pumping out from them from Bertha onwards.. the Jack Straw is great, and you wonder how Eyes found its way into set 1, then when they hit Deal you think this set is over only to be treated to a fabulous Playin>Scarlet>Playin' sandwich..      Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/6/74 - Tuesday One Bertha [5:25] ; Mexicali Blues [3:28] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:24] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:20] ; Sugaree [7:29] ; Jack Straw [5:12] ; Eyes Of The World [18:56] ; The Promised Land [3:13] ; Deal [4:50] ; Playing In The Band [22:52] > Scarlet Begonias [8:04] > Playing In The Band [5:43]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081018.mp3   thanks for your kind support..    "Gave the best we had to give

This wasn't the show I'd planned on presenting this week.. I thought oh this was too long.. but after listening to what I had prepared, and listening to this again, well, it was no choice.. so from the great year of 1973, we bring you the band's performance from May 20th, 1973 at Santa Barbra California.. Now this isn't your typical 2 1/2 hour show.. this one is going to stretch out for probably 3 weeks, as this was a *full* three set show. There are a few imperfections in the recording but overall for its age it is remarkable and I'm certain you'll enjoy it....   Grateful Dead Campus Stadium - University Of California Santa Barbara, CA 5/20/73 - Sunday One Bertha [5:39] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57] ; Box Of Rain [4:51] ; Deal [4:34] ; Looks Like Rain [6:33] ; Tennessee Jed [7:33] ; The Race Is On [2:56] ; China Cat Sunflower [6:05] > Jam [1:26] > I Know You Rider [5:14] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:01] ; They Love Each Other [5:14] ; Playing In The Band [18:#38]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051118.mp3   Excuse my brevity, this one was put together under some deadline pressure... :)   thanks for your support, I couldn't bring you the Deadpod without it...

This week's Deadpod features a rather historic show in the band's history - this was the very first show with Keith Godchaux, on October 19th, 1971 in Minneapolis Minnesota. Not only was this Keith's first show it features the premier of six songs that would all become staples in the band's repertoire, Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Mexicali Blues, Comes a Time, One More Saturday Night and Ramble On Rose. There's plenty of energy in this set, and the new tunes and the addition of Keith mark a turning point in the band's trajectory, as the sound begins its transition to the characteristic sound of 1972.   Its also a nice coincidence that I received an email this week from the author of a new blog, all about 'Comes A Time' .. it has a nice writeup about this show as well as other great versions. You can find it here: https://gotanemptycup.wordpress.com/, check it out!     Grateful Dead Northrup Auditorium Minneapolis, MN 10/19/71 - Tuesday One Bertha [5:46] ; Me And My Uncle [3:01] ; Sugaree [6:14] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:29] ; Cumberland Blues [5:01] ; Tennessee Jed [5:59] ; Black Peter [8:43] ; Jack Straw [5:02] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:14] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:15] ; Mexicali Blues [3:22] ; Comes A Time [7:01] ; Playing In The Band [5:42] ; One More Saturday Night [4:22] ; Casey Jones [5:47]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102017.mp3   for some reason the number of listeners seems to have gone down a bit lately.. if you have any suggestions please let me know!   have a great week and thank you for your support!!

Happy Autumnal Equinox!  While it still feels like summer here, we have a wonderful show from 1982 to celebrate the arrival of Autumn. This comes to us from September 21st, 1982 at Madison Square Garden, N.Y., N.Y. This first set  has been called the best of the year and while I'm not quite certain I'm willing to crown it that I will say I found it very enjoyable and hope you do as well. This is one of those shows where they delighted the crowd with an unusual opening.. a wonderful Playin' in the Band. Right away you are swept up with Garcia's fluid playing.. then to add to our delight a delicious Crazy Fingers follows. The rest of the set follows a more traditional pattern but is highlighted by a early West LA Fadeaway, a great Looks Like Rain (Garcia's second lead here is sweet) and a great China-Rider closer.. I also admit a fondness for Brent's playing on this set which is easily heard.      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/21/82 - Tuesday One Playing In The Band [9:56] > Crazy Fingers [9:47] > Me And My Uncle [2:48] > Big River [5:52] ; West L.A. As we approach what would have been Jerry Garcia's 75th birthday on Tuesday, I always struggle with finding the appropriate show to feature. I settled on a classic show from the summer of 1972 which showcases the band during one of their best periods. This comes to us from July 25th, 1972 at the Paramount Theater in Portland Oregon. It is surely not the 'best' show of this year, perhaps not even the best show of the run, but it is surely a good show; the band is listening to each other and playing together well. Jerry soars. This is a long first set (especially compared to later years). I hope you enjoy it as we take some time to reflect on what could have been.    Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR Date 7/25/72 - Tuesday One   The Promised Land [3:06] (1) ; Sugaree [7:06] ; (2) Me And My Uncle [2:53] ; Bird Song [8:49] ; Black Throated Wind [5:20] ; Cumberland Blues [5:05] ; Jack Straw [4:41] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:41] ; El Paso [4:36] (3) ; Tennessee Jed [7:20] ; Playing In The Band [13:24] ; Loser [6:36] ; (4) Beat It On Down The Line [3:09] ; Casey Jones [#5:27] (5)   (1) Weir: Why thank you. This month's episode focuses in on four shows in the Middle of April of 1978. Working their way out of the South, the Grateful Dead played Duke University on 4/12, VPI (now commonly referred to as Virginia Tech) on 4/14, William & Mary on 4/15, and Huntington Civic Center on 4/16. These four shows display a tidy cross-section of the band at the time and, fortunately for us, some quality tapes circulate.   The band is working into the layout of the modern Grateful Dead, with song oriented first sets and second set jamming but the jams aren't only in set two. In the episode, we talk a little about each show and then we've assembled a pair of 'sets' from highlights of the four nights. As we head into December I decided to bring you one of the classic December '71 shows from the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY. This week's show comes from 12/7/71 ... While I featured the classic from 12/5 a few years back I think you'll enjoy this one as well. This is an early Keith show, but Pigpen is here as well and does a fine rendition of 'Run Rudolph, Run' to get you in that Holiday spirit :) While none of these songs may go off into extended jams I am certain you'll appreciate the musicianship they show in each and every one..       Grateful Dead Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden New York, NY 12/7/71 - Tuesday   One   Cold Rain And Snow ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Mr. Charlie ; Sugaree ; Jack Straw ; Next Time You See Me ; Tennessee Jed ; El Paso ; Brokedown Palace ; Run Rudolph Run ; You Win Again ; Cumberland Blues ; Casey Jones   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120916.mp3   Finally I decided to play a wonderful piece from a brand new release that just came out from Holly Bowling. Here's a top-notch show from the Fall of 1972 to start off your Thanksgiving week right.. this is from 11/14/72, Oklahoma City Oklahoma.. I consider this a very well played 16 song first set.. After an opening 'Promised Land' Garcia gives us a slow, rolling 'Sugaree'.  After the 'El Paso' that follows we get 'Loser' - a personal favorite of mine and a perfect song for the western setting.. the set is full of favorites from the GD catalog.. Bertha, Tennessee Jed, and a smart China->Rider with a smoking transition. Garcia's notes lift us up as we move into that Rider. Box of Rain follows, then he band rocks it out with a quadruple serving of rocking standards - Beat It on Down the Line, a bouncy up-tempo 'Friend of the Devil', 'Around and Around' and the archetypical warning to Casey to watch his speed...     Grateful Dead Oklahoma City Music Hall Oklahoma City, OK Date11/14/72 - Tuesday One   The Promised Land [2:56] ; Sugaree [7:41] ; El Paso [4:18] ; Loser [5:#58] ; Black Throated Wind [6:52] ; Bertha [5:49] ; Mexicali Blues [3:#10] ; Tennessee Jed [7:28] ; Big River [4:16] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:09] > I Know You Rider [5:05] Box Of Rain [4:50] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:12] Friend Of The Devil [3:26] ; Around And Around [3:#09] ; Casey Jones [6:21]   There are some occasional sonic imperfections here, and a few cuts, but I hope you find this a pleasure to listen to as you get ready for the big holiday next week.   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111816.mp3   Be kind to yourself - Be kind to each other   I am blessed to be able to bring you this music. A quintessential 1972 Grateful Dead second set is on the docket for this week's Deadpod. This set from July 26th, 1972, at Portland's Paramont Theater clocks in at a little over two hours.. It features a number of wonderful highlights, including one of the last performances of 'You Win Again', and early  'He's Gone', and to top it all off, a 30 minute+ Dark Star. This is such a great show that I'm astounded that I've not played it on the Deadpod until today.. as the 40th anniversary of this great show approaches I will right that oversight. One of the greatest first sets ever.. from Dijon France, September 18th, 1974. It opens with a warm, delightful Uncle John's Band.. then the great songs roll on, Jack Straw, Friend of the Devil, Black Throated Wind, Scarlet Begonias (!).. its an insane first set and the recording is magnificent as well. There's no reason to enumerate every great song here, but the 'To Lay Me Down' is clearly one of the most powerful ever.,    I hope you enjoy this masterpiece.      Grateful Dead Parc des Expositions Dijon, France Wednesday   One Uncle John's Band [8:39] ; Jack Straw [5:11] ; Friend Of The Devil [4:20] ; Black Throated Wind [6:53] ; Scarlet Begonias [8:34] ; Mexicali Blues [3:09] ; Row Jimmy [7:26#] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:14] ; Deal [4:29] ; The Race Is On [3:08] ; To Lay Me Down [8:08] ; Playing In The Band [23:31]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091214.mp3     Thank you for listening and for your support, which makes it possible to publish this music each week..

Here's a show that was recently requested over on the Deadpod's Facebook page.. since this is an excellent recording, I decided this would be a good time to play it. It comes to us from October 29th, 1971 from teh old Allen Theater in Cleveland Ohio. While I never saw the Dead at this venue it was an old movie house that saw lots and lots of rock shows around this time. The band was going through a period of transition and I think you can hear that in the music and arrangements in some of these songs which are still growing and changing. Pigpen was missing as well and his absence is surely felt here. Nevertheless I enjoy early 70s Dead especially around this time of year for some reason so I hope you 'll enjoy this week's first set. As they often did around this time, they open with a nice Truckin' .. the Sugaree is quite good as well. While many of these songs are lacking in long jams, they are all well played and I hope you enjoy hearing them this week.  Grateful Dead Allen Theatre Cleveland, OH 10/29/71 - Friday Set One Truckin' [8:54] ; Sugaree [6:27] ; El Paso [4:21] ; Loser [6:07] ; Playing In The Band [5:43] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:19] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:19] ; Brokedown Palace [5:14] ; Jack Straw [4:56] ; Tennessee Jed [6:16] ; Mexicali Blues [3:00] ; Big Railroad Blues [2:55] ; Casey Jones [5:35] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011014.mp3 I hope its warmed up a bit where you are, and that the New Year has started out well for you!  As always, my most sincere thanks to those of you able to support the Deadpod - I really appreciate it!

I'm afraid that when I think of an iconic year for Grateful Dead music in the month of November that 1973 always pops into my mind. This, combined with a long-time request for this show on my request list, led to this week's show. Yes, this is only a day before the show released as Road Trips vol 4 no. 3, and that release does contain a few songs from this set 2, nevertheless, this music is far too wonderful not to be heard and treasured. In this week of Thanksgiving I can think of no better way to be grateful than to celebrate a great show like this one.. I hope you enjoy it as well my friends.. Another fine suggestion by a friend of the Deadpod sets the stage for this week's show - July 14th, 1984 from the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. It seems to fit right in with the last few weeks' and the boys do not disappoint on this one.. From our correspondent's email: "The first set features really high energy versions of Jack Straw and Big Railroad Blues. I'm not normally a big fan of Little Red Rooster, but this is a truly great version" I can second that recommendation and hope you enjoy this set as much as I do.. This was quite a week in the Dead community, some fine Furthur shows, Phil's 71st birthday, but overshadowing everything, for me, was the loss of Augustus Owsley Stanley. Owsley was of course instrumental in the formation and development of the Grateful Dead, of the 'big sound' that really defined the concert experience for the Dead, and of course, as a world renowned chemist. This week, thanks to the efforts of Jamie over at Lossless Legs, I'm playing one of Bear's recordings, from the famous Winterland run of October 74. Fare thee well, Bear - give Jerry our love... This week's Deadpod was a request from a brother who just lost a brother - one of his best memories of his late friend was a roadtrip to see this show, and what a show it was! This was the 'comeback' show where Jerry made his return after the coma that nearly took his life in 1986 - no one knew what was going to happen, and what a great choice for a opener in Touch of Grey! The entire show really sparkles, with a newfound energy and some great new MIDI sounds. To me, the energy of renewal present in this show fits perfectly at this time of year, besides I couldn't turn down a grieving friend.. I hope you enjoy it.... Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!! I've had a request for this show for almost a year and for one reason or another never got around to playing it.. but some recent requests for Pigpen and a stroke of good fortune caused me not to overlook it any longer.. This piece of primal Dead has some wonderful versions of some classic early songs; I particularly like the Pigpen numbers and 'Sittin On Top of the World'.. 'Doin' That Rag' is always a favorite of mine as well.
