The lights go out at McKinley High, but much comes to light.Jenna & Kevin are not mincing words - they think one of the cringiest, worst moments of the entire show happens in this episode. Kevin shares how he felt saying certain lines and tried to protest it, but ultimately, he had no say in changing it. On a more light-hearted note ... the return of a glowing SJP, Sue Sylvester's brilliant singing, and fun numbers, like "Longest Time," where everyone was being silly, especially Melissa Benoist, who had Kevin in stitches the entire time.Plus, fun memories of the cast going to see Jane Lynch make her Broadway debut in "Annie" and the unintentional chaos they caused with their arrival! Don't wait until 'Tomorrow' to listen to this one!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this week's edition of the News Man Weekly podcast, Richland Source City Editor Carl Hunnell is joined by Source reporters Katie Ellington Serrao, Grace McCormick and Mariah Thomas. The discussion revolves around the massive reporting project "Tomorrow's Talent" that the trio recently concluded. It was a series of two dozen stories that explored north central Ohio's workforce trends and how different organizations, including businesses and schools, are adapting to meet new challenges. Hunnell even gets the three reporters to engage in a game of "On the Record" in which secrets are revealed!Hunnell is also joined by executive producer Zac Hiser and video producer Grant Ritchey as they riff on the news of the week -- including a Springfield Township house explosion on Friday that killed one person and injured two others; the search by the Richland County Republican Party to replace outgoing At-large Councilwoman Stephanie Zader; a new partnership between the Oasis of Love Church and the City of Mansfield to rejuvenate Cyclops Field on the city's north side; the ongoing demolition of former Westinghouse properties on the city's east side that may be near an end after nearly two years of work; and the announcement that the City of Mansfield Trick-or-Treat will be conducted on Halloween Night this year.Relevant Links:Tomorrow's Talent storiesSpringfield Township house explosionRichland County Republicans seek applicants to fill Zader seatOasis of Love Church and the City of Mansfield to rejuvenate Cyclops FieldWestinghouse update: Site might be completed by NovemberCity of Mansfield Trick-or-TreatIntro song credit: Smoke And Drink, by Luke Watson.Be a Source Member for unlimited access to local, independent journalism.Support the show: https://richlandsource.com/membersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The fourth-most-popular entertainment news podcast in The Gambia returns this week with a great dog days of summer episode. First up, host Neal Pollack welcomes Sharyn Vane for another important eat-your-veggies segment. Apparently, the literary world has decided that apolitical writer Gabrielle Zevin, author of the bestselling 'Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow' is a "Zionist" because her novel features an Israel character and she once gave an interview to Hadassah magazine. This is annoying at the least, and quite dangerous at the most, and Book and Film Globe will continue to stand strong against forces in the literary world that insist on marginalizing and discriminating against Jewish authors. We should be long past this as a society. But we are not long past M. Night Shyamalan movies, and JonPaul Guinn joins our Rotten Tomatoes-approved editor-in-chief to discuss M. Night's wacky new locked-room serial-killer movie 'Trap,' which is almost a comedy, and is quite a lot of fun. JP way prefers Trap to Longlegs, and both he and Neal way prefer it to the previous Shyamalan movie A Knock At The Cabin, which collapsed under the weight of its own pretentiousness. There's nothing pretentious about Trap, it's fun. You will have fun. Have fun at it.There's also nothing pretentious about the Apple+ TV adaptation of Time Bandits, though Scott Gold, our resident Time Bandits effort, admits that showrunners Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement lack the artistry of Terry Gilliam, who made the original Time Bandits. But for men of a certain age, which Scott and Neal most definitely are, a Time Bandits reboot is nostalgic catnip. Scott says the show is funny, if not a surrealist masterpiece like the original. A little warm glow of time-traveling nostalgia. No pop-culture product ever really dies, and the new Time Bandits is no exception.Enjoy the show!

With a 50% new intake and 40% female representation, the latest parliamentary group promises exciting new talent. Renowned journalist and 'Tomorrow's MPs' watcher Michael Crick shares his insights on the standout figures to watch in the coming years. The general election results will reshape the parliamentary dynamics. How will this affect the Government and Opposition parties? Can the rules governing the rights and responsibilities of Opposition, designed for an era of two-party dominance, survive much longer in our multi-party system?Key cabinet positions have been filled, with further junior ministerial appointments on the way. Notably, Sir Patrick Vallance and James Timpson have been appointed to the House of Lords to serve as Minister for Science and Minster for Prisons respectively. But how easy is it for external appointees to navigate not just a new Government department but also the experience of being a new member of the House of Lords? With the loss of many key figures, how will the Conservative Party structure its top team to shadow the Government temporarily, pending the leadership contest? And thousands of students nationwide participated in the Hansard Society's Mock Elections programme. Which party emerged victorious in the schools' poll, and what do the results reveal about young people's political interests and engagement?

“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” is a New York Times best-selling book about love, art and video games. The author, Gabrielle Zevin, will be in Minneapolis on Friday to promote the paperback launch of her book two years after release. MPR News reporter Kyra Miles spoke with Zevin ahead of the event. For those who might not know, can you give a quick synopsis in your own words?Zevin: I'm already laughing at that because I've been promoting the book for two years. And it's kind of embarrassing to say that I still find “Tomorrow” somewhat hard to synopsis. So I'll add to that “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” is the story of Sam Mazur and Sadie Green, who have a three-decade-long friendship and artistic collaboration. And for me, the crux of the story is maybe how difficult it is to connect even though we have ever-increasing means to do so — but the real possibility of making meaningful connections in virtual spaces. So I've recommended this book to a lot of people. But I think something that I always disclaim to people when I recommend it is how perfectly imperfect the characters are. How do you go about creating these flawed but realistic characters? You know, I don't know if I'm trying to create people that are imperfect, but I am trying to create people and people are imperfect. I think there are some people that want to read characters that are maybe better than us in some way, but I am not that reader. I think the thing that moves me most in fiction is the sort of gap between the way we perceive ourselves and the way we perceive others. So what's exciting for you about this paperback launch? It's been two years in hardcover. And it's been great to just see it kind of sell and sell and sell. But with a lower price point, I'm excited that it gets to even more readers, readers who maybe felt resistant to the idea [of] a literary novel about video games, will think, “Hey, now that the price is lower, maybe I'll try a novel about video games.”I read lit-fic, but I am really a romance reader. And while I don't see this book as a romance, would you consider it a love story?I mean, I think all stories are love stories or lack-of-love stories. I think, in a sense, you can find it in even the most like ostensibly just esoteric literary fiction. At core, we're talking about: Were you loved enough? Did you love enough? And so I see all stories as love stories, even as somebody who writes literary fiction. But that said, I think the word romance has a burden that it doesn't need to have, you know. I think the book is not a romance, not in the way people think of romance. But I do think it is about two people who have a romance of the mind, but not a romance of the body. This book originally came out as the world was emerging from a pandemic. And now this paperback is emerging into a world where we have lots of major international conflicts going on. How do you think that will affect first time readers of this book?I think the worlds that my characters find themselves in in the book is the world. It has all of the things in it, not necessarily the particularity of 2024, you know, but it doesn't exist in a world that doesn't have conflict. When the book came out in 2022, there's a little bit that has to do with gun violence in the book, or maybe not a little bit, maybe a significant part of the book. And at the time I was doing interviews, journalists would ask me, “How did you know there would be another gun crime in the U.S. when you wrote this book?” I'm like, “because there's always another gun crime in the U.S.” And so if you write books that are, again, more in the world, I think they they feel more maybe naturally continuous with the way we live right now.I want to ask you what's next. But I also know that the book has been optioned as a movie. How are you thinking everything's gonna fit into a two-hour movie? When we went out with the book, it sold in manuscript — actually, it had its first film offers before we even sold the book — they actually kind of happened at the same time. But I said to my agents that I really thought it should be a limited series. And so of course, the best offers that came back were for movies. I don't feel desperately sad. There are some authors who are very eager to see their characters come to life on screen. But I never felt that way. Even though obviously it would be meaningful, probably financially, it would bring your books to a broader audience, and there are advantages to that happening, but I also just love the way a book can just exist as a book.

ConfessionOfficiant: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.People: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.Officiant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. Christ our PassoverPascha Nostrum - BCP p. 83Alleluia.Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; *therefore let us keep the feast,Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, *but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia.Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; *death no longer has dominion over him.The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; *but the life he lives, he lives to God.So also consider yourselves dead to sin, *and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia.Christ has been raised from the dead, *the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, *by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, *so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia. Psalm 16Conserva me, DomineProtect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; *I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord,my good above all other.”All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, *upon those who are noble among the people. But those who run after other gods *shall have their troubles multiplied.Their libations of blood I will not offer, *nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; *it is you who uphold my lot.My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *indeed, I have a goodly heritage.I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; *my heart teaches me, night after night.I have set the Lord always before me; *because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; *my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, *nor let your holy one see the Pit.You will show me the path of life; *in your presence there is fullness of joy,and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 17Exaudi, DomineHear my plea of innocence, O Lord;give heed to my cry; *listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.Let my vindication come forth from your presence; *let your eyes be fixed on justice.Weigh my heart, summon me by night, *melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.I give no offense with my mouth as others do; *I have heeded the words of your lips.My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *in your paths my feet shall not stumble.I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; *incline your ear to me and hear my words.Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, *O Savior of those who take refuge at your right handfrom those who rise up against them.Keep me as the apple of your eye; *hide me under the shadow of your wings,From the wicked who assault me, *from my deadly enemies who surround me.They have closed their heart to pity, *and their mouth speaks proud things. They press me hard, now they surround me, *watching how they may cast me to the ground,Like a lion, greedy for its prey, *and like a young lion lurking in secret places.Arise, O Lord; confront them and bring them down; *deliver me from the wicked by your sword.Deliver me, O Lord, by your hand *from those whose portion in life is this world;Whose bellies you fill with your treasure, *who are well supplied with childrenand leave their wealth to their little ones. But at my vindication I shall see your face; *when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The LessonsExod. 16:23-36he said to them, "This is what the Lord has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord; bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.'" So they put it aside until morning, as Moses commanded them; and it did not become foul, and there were no worms in it. Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is a sabbath, there will be none." On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none. The Lord said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and instructions? See! The Lord has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you food for two days; each of you stay where you are; do not leave your place on the seventh day." So the people rested on the seventh day. The house of Israel called it manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. Moses said, "This is what the Lord has commanded: 'Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, in order that they may see the food with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord, to be kept throughout your generations." As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the covenant, for safekeeping. The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a habitable land; they ate manna, until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. An omer is a tenth of an ephah.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. 21. You are GodTe Deum laudamusYou are God: we praise you;You are the Lord; we acclaim you;You are the eternal Father:All creation worships you.To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you.The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us freeyou did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of deathand opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge.Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saintsto glory everlasting. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. 1 Pet. 3:13-4:6Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same intention (for whoever has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin), so as to live for the rest of your earthly life no longer by human desires but by the will of God. You have already spent enough time in doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry. They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme. But they will have to give an accounting to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead, so that, though they had been judged in the flesh as everyone is judged, they might live in the spirit as God does.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. 16. The Song of ZechariahBenedictus Dominus Deus - Luke 1: 68-79Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *he has come to his people and set them free.He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *born of the house of his servant David.Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, *from the hands of all who hate us.He promised to show mercy to our fathers *and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *to set us free from the hands of our enemies,Free to worship him without fear, *holy and righteous in his sightall the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,To give his people knowledge of salvation *by the forgiveness of their sins.In the tender compassion of our God *the dawn from on high shall break upon us,To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The PrayersOfficiant: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you.Officiant: Let us pray The Lord's PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The SuffragesShow us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your salvation.Clothe your ministers with righteousness;Let your people sing with joy.Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; Nor the hope of the poor be taken away. Create in us clean hearts, O God; And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.Take a moment at this time to reflect and pray for the needs of others. Second Sunday in EasterAlmighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.A Collect for PeaceO God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.A Collect for GraceLord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. For MissionAlmighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. ThanksgivingsThe General ThanksgivingAlmighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.A Prayer of St. ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. ConclusionLet us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia. Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Around The World In 80 Days by Jules Gabriel Verne词汇提示1.poverty 贫穷原文Chapter 9: When it is better to travel east20 DecemberPhileas Fogg was free and he knew exactly what to do.He looked at Inspector Fix and then he hit him: first with one hand, then with the other.Fix fell to the floor.Passepartout was very happy.'Good!'he told his master. Then he turned to Inspector Fix.'That's what happens to people who behave like you,' he shouted at the confused detective. They left the police station and went towards the railway station immediately. They were in time for the train, but the train was late and when they arrived in London they looked up at the clock in Euston Station to see that it was ten to nine.Phileas Fogg lost his bet - by five minutes!Phileas Fogg accepted this in his usual way, without showing any particular emotion.Mrs. Aouda, on the other hand, was very emotional. She continued to cry. She did not know what to do.Passepartout was also worried for his master, and his job.It was his master's choice to spend all his money on the bet, but he was such a good, honest person. It was not good to see him like this.He still could not stop thinking that it was his fault. The next day, Passepartout followed the same routine, except for one thing. When they heard the sound of Big Ben at half past eleven the next day, Phileas Fogg did not go to the Reform Club. The house felt strange. It was like no one lived there. At about half past seven that evening, Phileas Fogg asked Mrs. Aouda if he could come to her room to speak to her.'Madam', he began sadly. 'I wanted to take you back to England with me because I thought I could offer you a good life here. Now I am a poor man... and I have nothing to offer you.'It was the first time Mrs. Aouda saw Phileas Fogg looking really sad.'I know, Mr. Fogg, and I'm so sorry. You saved my life. You took time to rescue me, and you lost your bet because of me.''Madam,I couldn't let you die that terrible death, but now you are here, and you need a way to live.I have my house and my possessions...''Maybe your friends could...''I have no friends,' he said sadly.'Well, what about your relatives?''I have no relatives.''I tis easier to live in poverty when there are two of us to share it,' said Mrs. Aouda taking his arm. 'I want to be your wife.'Mr. Fogg got up.Mrs. Aouda saw that there was a small tear in his eye.'I love you,' he said, 'And I want to spend my life with you.''Oh...!'said Mrs. Aouda with a surprised cry.She was so happy that she put her hand to her heart.Passepartout came into the room and saw his master standing close to Mrs. Aouda. He understood immediately.'This is wonderful news!' he said. 'We all need some good news.''Yes', said Phileas Fogg. 'If you agree Mrs. Aouda, wecan get married immediately. Passepartout, do you know where Reverend Wilson lives?'Passepartout ran to Reverend Wilson's house, but five minutes later, at twenty-five to eight he was already back at the house.'Tomorrow morning... he said out of breath. 'You can't get married.''Why?'asked Phileas Fogg.'Because today is Saturday and tomorrow is Sunday!' he said excitedly.'Saturday?Impossible!' replied Phileas Fogg.'Yes,yes, it is. Do you remember? We went around the world and we traveled east and time changes as you go around the world and we're now twenty-four hours ahead. It's Saturday! Hurry, Mr. Fogg! We only have ten minutes. You can still win your bet.'They took Phileas Fogg's carriage to go to the Reform Club.Passepartout wanted to drive. He almost hit two dogs and they almost had more accidents before they arrived at the Reform Club at eight forty-four.'Well,hello my friends,' he said, when he stepped into the Games Room at eight forty-five.'I believe that I am now a rich man,' he said with a small smile. Here he was, eighty days later. And that was how Phileas Fogg won his bet.On Monday morning, Phileas Fogg and Mrs. Aouda were married.Later that morning Passepartout came into his room.'Do you know, mar Fogg,' he said, 'that if you don't go across India, you can go around the world in just seventy-eight days?''Maybe that's true,' said Phileas Fogg. But when we went across India, I met Mrs. Aouda, who is now my lovely wife.'And with these words, they celebrated Phileas Fogg's good fortune.
We have a stunning set-up upgrade this week but in the excitement of it all, we accidentally recorded the first half of the podcast with Caitlin's microphone back to front so the audio is a bit off this week. Please excuse the audio and know that we have it fixed and ready for next week's episode. It was a busy week this week! Friday night, we saw 'Anyone But You' starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell at the Moonlight Cinema, got ridiculously burnt and drunk at the Morphettevile races on Saturday and spent Sunday regretting our life choices and planning our 6-month hibernation. Danika reviews 'Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow' by Gabrielle Zevin and Caitlin shares her latest feelings on Sarah J. Maas' 'Throne of Glass' series having recently finished 'Queen of Shadows'. Caitlin also picks 'Cherry' starring Tom Holland as her best film in a while! Follow us on Instagram and TikTok: thedeluludiariespod Watch the full episode on YouTube!

Around The World In 80 Days by Jules Gabriel Verne词汇提示1.suttee 缝合2.pagoda 佛塔3.sacrifice 牺牲4.Yokohama 横滨,日本东部城市原文Chapter 4: When our adventurers rescue a woman from certain deathThey stopped near a village, where they heard the sound of strange musical instruments.Their guide went to discover what was happening and he was soon back with the news. The people of the village, their guide said, were celebrating a local tradition called suttee. Our travelers immediately wanted to know more about it.The guide told them that when a woman's husband dies, his wife must die with him and they burn her alive in a big fire."The name of the woman is Mrs. Aouda,' he told them, and she's very beautiful.Everyone knows her. She is from a rich family. Her father was a businessman in a town near Bombay. Her parents sent her to a European school in Bombay. She learnt European languages there, and she has European ways. Her parents died and she had to marry an old prince. She became a widow after only three months. They are taking her to the pagoda tonight. They are going to burn her alive tomorrow, at sunrise.''My goodness! How terrible! Do such traditions still exist?' asked Phileas Fogg.He seemed surprised, but his voice sounded curious.'Poor woman!' whispered Passepartout.'We can still save her,' said Phileas Fogg. 'We are a few hours ahead of time.'"Yes,but sir, if we save this woman, they'll try and kill us!' said their guide.'I can only speak for myself, but I am prepared to take that risk,' replied Phileas Fogg. When they arrived, they started to plan the rescue.Unfortunately, there were guards all around the pagoda and so they decided that it was too dangerous to do anything. They were about to leave, when Passepartout said that maybe he had an idea. When the sun came up the next day, the crowd arrived to see the bonfire ready for the sacrifice.Phileas Fogg prepared himself to run towards the fire in a final effort to save Mrs. Aouda, when suddenly a terrified cry came from the crowd. Her husband was not dead!He stood up in the flames, took his wife in his hands and ran in the opposite direction to the crowd. It was not difficult to imagine Phileas Fogg's surprise when he later discovered that the woman's 'husband' was Passepartout.A few moments later, our heroes disappeared into the forest with their new travelling companion, followed by the angry guards.Mrs. Aouda slowly started to wake up when they reached the station at Allahabad.Phileas Fogg thanked his guide for his loyalty and gave him the elephant. For a young guide an elephant like Kiouni was a big present. He could make a lot more money now that he had his own elephant. He was very happy and continued to thank Mr. Fogg and the others until they left.On the train to Calcutta, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout told Mrs. Aouda all about their adventure.Mrs. Aouda couldn't believe it: these men risked their lives - for her!At seven o'clock they arrived in Calcutta. The ship for Hong Kong did not leave until twelve o'clock midday.Fortunately, they were still on time.Inspector Fix was also on his way to Hong Kong. How did he know they were there? How did he get there? That remains a mystery, but one thing was sure: Inspector Fix was determined to arrest Phileas Fogg and he had a plan.He just had to wait a little longer. After the ship stopped for a short time in Singapore, it continued on its way to Hong Kong where, on the morning of 6 November, a boat going to Yokohama, in Japan, was waiting for them.Unfortunately, they arrived a day later than planned, because of a bad storm.'Oh no! ' thought Passepartout.' The boat will leave without us, and my master won't win his bet!'When they were at the port, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout walked towards the captain of a small boat.'When does the next boat to Yokohama leave?' Fogg asked.'Tomorrow morning,' he replied.'Didn't it leave this morning?''No,they had to repair it, so it's not leaving until tomorrow.'Passepartout was very happy to hear this good news and shook the captain's hand. The captain was a little surprised.Phileas Fogg simply wrote how late they were in his diary.6 November - minus 24 hours
The festive season, while often associated with joy and merriment, can also bring about increased stress and anxiety, particularly among teenagers and young adults. We will discuss triggers and signs of stress and anxiety in young people during this period. It is crucial to understand the distinction between temporary holiday stress and potentially more severe mental health issues. This understanding enables parents, teachers, and friends to support young individuals better and appreciate their struggles. Understanding and addressing these feelings can create a more meaningful and joyful holiday experience for our youth. This approach fosters mental well-being and equips them with skills and habits to benefit them. About James McLamb:
There are broadly three Ian Broudies in the public imagination. One is the songwriter with a catalogue of softly psychedelic left-field pop tunes. The second is the record producer behind Echo & the Bunnymen, the Fall, the Coral and Terry Hall. The third is the co-composer of our new national anthem. He talks here about early life in Liverpool and the records that enthralled him (See Emily Play, Autobahn), what he learned from his mentor Roger Eagle (who ran Eric's Club), a life-shifting moment with Steve Wright, what matters most in production, the disastrous time he introduced the Spice Girls on Top of the Pops and why the FA rejected the original version of Three Lions, wanted a new title and asked him to drop Skinner and Baddiel. He's funny, outspoken, candid, modest and affectionate and movingly philosophical on the rigours of composition: "as soon as you finish a song it becomes something - but it loses 90% of what it could have become".This podcast was recorded in front of a live audience at 21Soho in London on October 30th, 2023 and Ian's new memoir is just out - 'Tomorrow's Here Today: Lightning Seeds, Football and Post-Punk'.Order Ian's book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tomorrows-Here-Today-Lightning-Post-Punk/dp/178870902021Soho: https://www.21-soho.com/Tickets for Word In Your Ear live at 21Soho on November 27th here: https://www.tickettext.co.uk/ZOthfatjxiSubscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free! - access to all of our content: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Author and screenwriter Gabrielle Zevin's 2022 novel 'Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow' is a successful game-changer. The book was an instant hit upon release and earned positive reviews from Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post and The New York Times, even making the latter's famous Best Seller List. Film rights to the novel have already been purchased by Paramount and Temple Hill Entertainment. Gabrielle Zevin appreciates her book's success, but finds describing the video game-themed premise difficult. "I think it's because there are so many things in it, it seems hard to make it pithy or to fit into an elevator pitch or what have you." Tonight's special guest is Paul Howard from Studio City, California, a child abuse survivor who's a filmmaker, artist and activist. He loosely uses his own story in his newest film, 'Tomorrow', an award winning short film, written and directed by Karis Campbell. It now includes an epilogue companion piece, 'Paul's Story', where the two, along with child safety educator, Pattie Fitzgerald, discuss the film and its themes further. "We also discuss my experiences as a victim of abuse," Paul says, "and my journey into becoming a survivor." Paul discusses how 90% of abusers are someone we know. Children are taught stranger danger leaving them vulnerable, making it more difficult to come forward when it is the couch, teach or someone who sits at the dinner table. Paul himself, a brother and all the other children were abused violently in a multitude of ways at the daycare he was placed in from 6 months old until age 12. He talks of how it was a culture of fear, and he gives an honest and heartfelt reflection of how he thought the abuse was a norm because it was all he had known. He goes on to say, "It's important that we understand what a man goes through as a survivor. The first step is to be able to talk about it." Paul courageously brings forth a hard truth, those we trust and love can be our abusers too. "We must teach children to trust that inner feeling that says something doesn't feel right." As a man who is healing and recovered from his trauma he wants survivors to understand you too can heal and arrive at a good place in life. The film is wonderfully made, bringing forth so much insight on keeping our kids safe. "Telling is healing."

What drives fertility? What drives mortality? What drives migration? These are some of the questions that drive the field of demography. Paul Morland is the author of three books: 'Demographic Engineering: Population Strategies and Ethnic Conflict' which looks at the links between demography and conflict, 'The Human Tide: How Population Shaped the Modern World' which charts the last two hundred years from a demographic perspective, and his most recent, 'Tomorrow's People' which examines current and future population trends.Greg and Paul analyze how economics and cultural values affect fertility in a society, population size & productivity, the political attitudes to demography, the relationship between demography and power, and what sort of future current trends may bring.Episode Quotes:Demography has a unique insight to history02:05: Demography has indeed a unique insight into history. It's a field of its own. So, apart from history, people are studying: What drives fertility? What drives mortality? What drives migration? It can be a very contemporary study. It can be a highly mathematical, highly statistical study, but thinking of it historically, it is a window on history, and there are many windows on history, and to see history properly, we need to look through all those windows.Defining postmodernity 08:34: Your fertility rate is going to be driven hugely not by how much you earn or even the level of education you have, but by your beliefs.Who controls fertility12:15: Control of fertility tends to start at the top and work its way down. So access to contraception, it was often quite expensive or you needed to know about it, you needed education. So very often in societies it's the wealthier that start using contraception and it filters down. Macbeth Act five, scene five, lines 18-28 Why Shakespeare? It's a question generations of students have asked. One of the good answers is that the plays contain passages like this where you can enjoy the way a few words can be made to do a great deal of work. Words associated with time, mortality, the stage, images of transience and futility, all coalesce in that last magnificent sentence to present one of the most nihilistic views of life in English. Life is brief, death is dusty. There is no afterlife, no possible redemption. If there is a God overseeing it all, he she or it is an idiot. You live your life as an actor in a play, unable to make your own decisions, a puppet of the script and the director. But you're not even a good actor, you're clumsy, you have a bit part and if life were a film when the credits roll you can only appear as ‘man walking dog across street', or ‘girl third from right in crowd'. You don't even have the consolation that you took part in a masterpiece,. You're trapped in a trivial story, written by an idiot, and it means nothing. It's not only nihilistic, it's also startlingly unchristian, And then you should remember that this is a speech by a specific character at a specific moment in the play. Macbeth has made bad choices from the start. He is about to be held accountable for them. What better self-defence than to claim he had no choice? The speech may be nihilistic, but the play contradicts everything he says. He's lying to himself. Very clever that Mr. William Shakespeare. Wrote some good lines.

I've had the 'flu and been sick for t he past five days, so here I am a day late with the podcast. It was so lovely to wake up this morning and feel that my sparkle is back! Yesterday I tried to convince myself that I 'HAD' to put out an episode, and pretty quickly turned from that critical, demanding, unreasonable voice towards a more self-compassionate, understanding one which said, 'Tomorrow you'll feel better, you can do it then.' I've been practising self compassion for some time now, and these are the fruits of my labour. Contrary to popular opinion, being self compassionate does not turn me into a complacent, self-satisfied layabout. It actually encourages me to show up, be visible and share my gifts with the world. In self-criticism land, there are no gifts. So I hope the podcast today encourages you to make this delicious shift in your inner talk so you can become the encouraging ally of your inner world. I've recoorded a special self compassion meditation which you can access here

Tonight's special guest is Paul Howard from Studio City, California, a child abuse survivor who's a filmmaker, artist and activist. He loosely uses his own story in his newest film, 'Tomorrow', an award winning short film, written and directed by Karis Campbell. It now includes an 'Epilogue' companion piece where the two, along with child safety educator, Pattie Fitzgerald, discuss the film and its themes further.
