On Friday 26 May this year, James Macintyre was advised to go to Accident & Emergency, after experiencing stomach pains. He was sent immediately to ICU, where he was diagnosed with acute or “severe” pancreatitis. He would spend the next four months in hospital, which included two months in the ICU and five weeks in a coma. Doctors thought that he might not survive. On the podcast this week, James talks about how the experience has shaped his faith, and given him renewed appreciation of family, friends, medical staff, and parish priests. Quintessential safe assets are US Treasuries. Yet it is questionable whether US government IOUs satisfy this definition today. Against a background of soaring inflation they are priced to deliver negative real returns. Their liquidity in systemic crises since 2007-08 has been questionable. And soaring debt since the pandemic together with tightening monetary policy points to potential Treasury market turbulence. Could this pose a threat to the dollar's role as the world's preeminent reserve currency? Reserve currency status is in reality a relative issue. At present none of the main reserve currencies can be regarded as safe. US Treasuries and the dollar continue to look the least unsafe outlets for nervous money. Two pressing questions are whether the global shortage of safe assets is likely to persist and whether US and European sanctions targetting Russia's official reserves since the invasion of Ukraine have changed the rules of the reserve currency game. Where does this weaponisation of reserves leave the renminbi as a future challenger to the dollar? And what does the closer geopolitical alignment of the US and the EU in the face of the Russian threat mean for the euro's reserve currency role? Speaker: John Plender is a British writer, broadcaster and journalist based at the Financial Times in London. After Oxford University, he joined Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths & Co, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1970. Andrew Davidson's grandfather Fred was a doctor who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. Posted to the Western Front with the 1st Battalion Cameronians, he packed his folding camera alongside his medical equipment and began to secretly document life in the trenches. Andrew's book, Fred's War, gives a rare insight into life on the front line during the early stages of the Great War. Fred Davidson was one of the first medics to win the Military Cross. Rula found fame in the 1970s as 'Q' in the television series Rock Follies and her career has included roles in Minder, To the Manor Born, Doctor Who and Coronation Street. On stage she appeared in the Vagina Monologues and Calendar Girls. Rula - My Colourful Life, is published by Biteback Publishing. Amrik Singh is a Sikh chaplain at London's Heathrow Airport. Between his chaplaincy and his role as a Heathrow ramp agent, he lives his life according to Sikh philosophies and traditions and shares his Sikhism with his co-workers and passengers. He republishes his book 'The Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter', an account of his journey, and his country's, from apartheid to a new South Africa with a moving chapter in which he tries to explain to his young son about apartheid.
