European winter is setting in on the battlefields in Ukraine and Russia. After almost three years of outright war, and almost four months since Ukrainian troops launched a lightning offensive into the Russian region of Kursk, there are now real doubts about how long Ukraine can continue the fight. Russian advances continue in both Kursk and in the south, and Russian missile and drone attacks are hitting Ukraine infrastructure hard. Then there is the Trump factor. The US president elect promising he would end the war 'in a day' if elected, with strategists and analysts trying to work out frantically want that means. A deal maybe, but in whose favour? What is the future for this conflict in the region? Philip Clark is joined on Nightlife by Paul Dibb AM, an Emeritus Professor at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the ANU. He is also a Former Deputy Secretary of Defence and Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation. Ukraine and Russia look to be heading towards a ceasefire - but it could be messy. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hinting he'd temporarily cede territory to Russia – if the whole country's extended an invite to NATO. Former UK Defence Attaché in Moscow John Foreman told Mike Hosking both Ukraine and Russia seem to be trying to influence Donald Trump ahead of him taking office – but Trump's kept his cards close to his chest. He says the only clarity we have is from Trump tapping General Kellogg to serve as special envoy – who wants to delay NATO membership, but offer Ukraine security assurances. In August, the Ukrainian armed forces managed to pull off an incursion into Russian territory. Unlike previous forays executed by small paramilitary groups, the incursion into Russia's Kursk region appears to be more strategic and serious. Russia was forced to retreat, leaving behind a lot of conscripts who were taken as prisoners of war by the Ukrainian army. While the operation seems to be slowing down, its long lasting consequences are still not clear. Regional governments in border regions of Russia are trying to maintain the facade of life as usual while evacuating people from the affected area. The Kremlin, meanwhile, is looking for a way to counteract the enemy's operation and recover from such a reputational blow for a nuclear state.

Political scientist Kathryn Stoner is the Director of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford and an authority on Russian/Ukrainian politics. She says views on the current war depend on which side someone is on: Many Russians and their leader Vladimir Putin say Ukrainians are Russians and have been since the 10th century. Ukrainians strongly disagree, likening the two nations to the U.S. and Great Britain. How the present conflict is resolved has important implications for other former Soviet states and the future of the European Union, as Stoner tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? The Multicultural Middle Ages
Prince Vladimir as a Recruit in the War Between Russia and Ukraine

The Multicultural Middle Ages

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2024 37:19

Medievalism has been a common—and hardly innocent—practice in eastern European political discourses ever since the dissolution of the USSR in the 1990s. To use but one example, both Russia and Ukraine have laid claims on such prominent historical figures as Prince Vladimir/Volodymyr the Great, Princess Olga, Boris and Gleb/Hlib, as well as on such semi-legendary characters as Ilya of Murom. The recent military conflict has led to a renewal of interest in the history of medieval Rus' and to the rewriting and falsification of this history, particularly in the public sphere through education and political discourse. In this episode, scholars Anastasija Ropa and Edgar Rops discuss the appropriation of the historical and legendary figures of Prince Vladimir/Volodymyr the Baptizer of Rus', Princess Olga, and Ilya of Murom in different Ukrainian and Russian media, particularly sculpture and cinema. For more information about this conversation, visit www.multiculturalmiddleages.com.

If there's one thing fascists love it's using the threat of terrorism to rile up their base. The largest terrorist attack in Moscow in decades signals a resurgent ISIS, one that Trump and his MAGA cult will no doubt campaign off of, to “scare out” the vote. (The independent voter needed to win close states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin may not care about Netanyahu's terrorism, only that committed by brown people). How will Trump and his longtime crime-partner Paul Manafort, rumored to officially join the campaign soon (Manafort never left!), capitalize off the growing terror threats, worsened by Trump and Putin ally Netanyahu and his genocidal war to cling to power?   In this week's Gaslit Nation, Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman and analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast join Andrea to discuss the Crocus theater attack in Moscow and why Russia is a favorite target of ISIS, the latest reporting on the Kremlin's Havana Syndrome electronic warfare that has attacked around 1,500 people serving in the U.S. government and their families, and whether Trump will unleash violence if he loses, or wins.     Our bonus episode this week features a debate among Gaslit Nation and Kremlin File over MAGA Ken doll Mike Johnson. Is he actually serious about bringing Ukraine aide up for a vote, or is he stringing us along as ammunition runs dangerously low and more Russian missiles make it through? As Congress comes back into session next week, we discuss all the ways they could actually do something to stop Russia's genocide in Ukraine–a laboratory for Russian aggression that eventually reaches us. U.S. President Joe Biden took less than two minutes to bring up Russia in his 2024 State of the Union address. “If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you, he will not,” Biden said, prompting a standing ovation. “But Ukraine can stop Putin if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself.”  An unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia has been at the center of the Biden administration's foreign policy for more than two years now. But Washington's relations with Moscow and Kyiv looked very different when Biden took office back in 2021. For the inside scoop on team Biden's Russia and Ukraine policy, and how Moscow's 2022 invasion turned all their plans upside down, Meduza turns to Politico national security reporter Alex Ward, the author of The Internationalists: The Fight To Restore American Foreign Policy After Trump.  Timestamps for this episode: (5:07) How did team Biden originally plan to handle relations with Moscow and Kyiv? (11:40) How did the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal influence the response to Russia's looming Ukraine invasion? (15:46) Why did U.S. intelligence get Russia's invasion plan right but its military capabilities wrong?  (23:40) What did the first two years tell us about team Biden's approach to foreign policy?
