In this episode of The Finance Geeks, Paul Cleworth and Warren Shute dig into the aftermath of the UK's Autumn Budget, one of the biggest tax-raising budgets since 1993. With the government targeting £40 billion in taxes, they break down the key changes, including rises in employer National Insurance, adjustments to Capital Gains Tax, and a boost in the minimum wage. They highlight the government's 180-degree shift on tax policy, increasing taxes despite prior promises, and share insights on how these adjustments will impact businesses, investors, and homeowners alike. Paul and Warren share advice for proactive planning in response to these changes, guiding listeners on how to stay ahead in this evolving financial landscape and keep the financial scales tipped in their favour. ========================== Chapters: 0:00 - Intro 4:59 - The Budget Fallout ========================== Follow us our our social media channels: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefinancegeekspodcast/ X: https://twitter.com/TheFinanceGeeks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thefinancegeeks ========================== Podcast References: The Budget - Autumn Budget 2024 – HC 295 https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/672232d010b0d582ee8c4905/Autumn_Budget_2024__web_accessible_.pdf AUTUMN-STATEMENT – Tandem Budget Guide https://tandemfinancial.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/AUTUMN-STATEMENT-24_spreads.pdf Chancellor Rachel Reeves admits she was 'wrong' to say higher taxes not needed during election | Sky News https://news.sky.com/story/chancellor-rachel-reeves-admits-she-was-wrong-to-say-higher-taxes-not-needed-during-election-13247364 Republicans win Senate majority | AP News https://apnews.com/live/senate-house-election-updates-11-5-2024 Autumn Budget 2024: Pensions to be subject to inheritance tax https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2024/10/pensions-liable-inheritance-tax-2027/ Pensions face “double tax” due to inheritance tax change - what are your options? | MoneyWeek https://moneyweek.com/personal-finance/pensions/pensions-face-double-tax-due-to-inheritance-tax-change-options Laffer curve - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laffer_curve Autumn Budget 2024: what do the experts say about the major changes? | Unbiased https://www.unbiased.co.uk/news/personal-finance/autumn-budget-2024-what-do-the-experts-say-about-the-major-changes ========================== This show is designed to be informational only and does not constitute investment or financial advice. In what appeared to be a relatively uninspiring Tynwald Order Paper one of the expected highlights was the Treasury Minister's statement. As things turned out, Lawrie Hoopers resignation overshadowed everything else but Alex Allinson's statement explained a lot, both in what he did and didn't say. The temporary rise in the higher rate of income tax is looking more permanent than we'd been led to believe and the pension triple lock is likely to be removed, but there was some good news hinted at in the statement too. No give aways from Treasury but perhaps some jam tomorrow?

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has delivered a £10bn tax-cutting Budget, promising to create a “new generation of investors” — but what does he actually have in store for our personal finances? Host Claer Barrett is joined by an expert panel to discuss tax changes coming in April, with higher-earning working parents set to see the biggest boost. Armed with direct guidance from HMRC, Miranda Green, the FT's deputy opinion editor and Rafe Uddin, FT politics reporter, talk us through changes to child benefit, and whether plans for a new “UK Isa” and a retail offering of NatWest shares this summer will really boost the fortunes of London's stock market — and of investors. They're joined by Carl Emmerson, deputy director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, who sets out what people on different salary bands can expect to see from the second cut to national insurance — plus what tax policies the opposition Labour party might be thinking up after Hunt shamelessly borrowed some of its biggest ideas. What will be the business and economic consequences of the Dublin riots? There is often trouble when large pools of uneducated, unemployed young men are organised by old men - mad mullahs, army councils, Trump-style demagogues. The list of suspects is a long one. Whether that trouble fizzles out or leads to revolution depends on many things. Mostly how the rest of us react to far right (or left) neo-fascism.Data continue to point to a very robust Irish labour market. Export (especially chemical & pharma) weakness has yet to lead to significant net job losses. Similarly, high profile layoffs in the tech sector are not showing up in the job stats. We are still short of workers. But not, apparently, rioters on scooters. Are they on benefits? The UK's Autumn Statement was a blast from the past. Transparent fiddling of the numbers, utterly unrealistic forecasts of fiscal austerity post-election and an unaffordable, unsustainable tax cut. Whoever wins the next election will have to reverse that tax cut and then some. Somebody needs a plan to get the UK economy going again. The Guardian's Kiran Stacey joins Nish and Coco to explain what these cuts mean for public services (spoiler alert: it's not good), and to explain why these proposals look like the work of a Chancellor who doesn't plan to be in office much longer. While the Tories plot out a strategy for the next election– and its aftermath– the millions of people using food banks have other concerns. Helen Barnard, Director of Policy, Research & Impact at the Trussell Trust explains what the Autumn Statement means for people struggling with food insecurity and homelessness, and why tax cuts typically benefit the wealthiest members of society, not the poorest. The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, announced ‘the biggest tax cut in British history' for businesses and the ‘largest ever tax cut for workers' in today's Autumn Statement. But are these tax cuts all they seem? How come overall the tax burden will rise to the highest level since the Second World War? And did the Chancellor hint at a spring election? Adam and Chris are joined by the BBC's economics editor Faisal Islam and the chief executive of the CBI Rain Newton-Smith to talk this all through.
