Her research focuses on public health ethics and social implications of advances in microbial and human genetics. She has a PhD in philosophy from Michigan State University. From 2012-2016 she worked as a senior policy and research analyst on the staff of president Barak Obama's Presidential Commission for the study of bioethical issues.Listen in as Dr. Meagher shares her career journey starting with her undergraduate interest in the philosophy of science and social influences of how science gets done. She describes how she was drawn to the growing field of public health ethics, which blossomed in the early 2000s with increasing publications and dedicated journals. Dr. Meagher describes her Virtue Ethics orientation to public health ethics and shares the inside scoop on what it is like to serve on a Presidential Commission.Later in her career, embedded with Mayo clinic biobank, Dr. Meagher describes her experiences with public engagement with community and how bioethicists can be a bridge between basic scientists and the community when grappling with difficult ethical dilemmas like those dealing with broad consent for future research with banked specimens. Finally, we delve into a discussion of how Dr. Meagher's work on antimicrobial resistance led her to engage in concepts of One Health Policy, which recognizes the interdependence of people, animals and the environment. She highlights the importance of breaking down silos between researchers in different sectors and how bioethics can bridge disciplines and create shared moral language, while also centering engagement of communities to help define these problems from different perspectives. Using the symphony of her culture to empower her students, she forms a choir, bringing them together while unexpectedly rediscovering her passion for being a teacher and mother. In the 1920's and 30s, shark attacks off the coast of New South Wales, Australia were not an especially uncommon event. In 1935, however, Sydney's peaceful coastal charm was shattered by a grotesque discovery at the Coogee Aquarium that was anything but normal. A captured tiger shark, put on public display, vomited up a human arm—severed, tattooed, and unmistakably out of place. What began as a curiosity quickly spiraled into a chilling murder mystery involving gangsters, betrayal, and a body that was never found. SOURCES Roope, Phillip & Meagher, Kevin (2020) Shark Arm. This week Nicola and Di chat with the passionate and purposeful Dr. Phoebe Meagher. Phoebe is a scientist at the Taronga Zoo Conservation Society with a diverse background in wildlife conservation, forensic research and education. She has been pioneering the use of advanced technology and AI to combat wildlife trafficking and enhance animal detection. Phoebe has also led many field projects which have had a tangible impact and allowed for the successful release of rehabilitated animals back into their natural habitat. On top of all of that, Phoebe is also a mum of 2. In this conversation, we hear all about the incredible project that Phoebe has been leading, where Taronga is using AI imaging technology to detect and prevent animals that are being illegally trafficked. Phoebe tells us about the astounding wildlife trafficking trade, with thousands of animals, such as blue tongue lizards, being poached and sent through the mail to foreign countries where they are sold for substantial amounts of money. Phoebe also shares some of the most incredible stories from her career as a wildlife biologist. From almost losing an arm whilst hand feeding sharks, to being shocked by numb rays when she was studying sting rays for her PhD thesis as well as the most epic expedition through the jungles of Palawan. On that particular trip, Phoebe was guided by an animal poacher, 8 military guards and a young man wielding a machete in the hopes of finding a pangolin (the most trafficked animal in the world) so they could take the images they needed for the AI tech to prevent it being trafficked in the future. It is really amazing to hear about all of the conservation work that Taronga is doing and to learn how much zoos have changed for the better over the years. We are so proud of the work that Phoebe is doing and thankful that there are women like her in this world. We hope you enjoy this chat as much as we did. Corporations announced a staggering $233.8 billion in stock buybacks in April, the second-highest monthly total ever recorded. But unlike previous buyback bonanzas, this isn’t a sign of economic strength or corporate confidence. Quite the opposite. Are buybacks just one big shell game or are they fiscally prudent? Corporate stock buybacks have inspired great debate since a Reagan era tax law change and a Clinton era deal sweetener. On the one hand they have enriched shareholders and made executives extremely wealthy. On the other hand, the growth in buybacks mean companies aren’t investing in innovation, workers, or expansion. "I cannot imagine a worse deal than the one that Skadden came away with." That's the opinion of one of the law firm's own associates, Rachel Cohen. The Chicago-based finance lawyer has grabbed the spotlight by criticizing Skadden and Paul Weiss for reaching agreements with President Donald Trump as he targets Big Law through a series of executive orders. She's also slammed others for staying quiet, even as three major firms fight Trump directives in court. "The industry is not uniting," said Cohen, who is set to officially leave the firm later this week. "We have to be proactive here and we've not seen that from anyone except for associates." Late last week, President Trump said that, to avoid being targeted by a punitive executive order, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom agreed to provide $100 million worth of pro bono services to causes Trump supports. This is $60 million more than was offered in a similar deal struck by the firm Paul Weiss weeks earlier. Even before this, Cohen had already put in her resignation, which will take effect later this week. More than 1,500 Big Law associates anonymously signed an open letter criticizing the industry's response to Trump's attacks. Cohen chose not to remain anonymous. Now she's calling on Big Law associates to go on a "recruitment strike" and refuse to do any recruitment for their firms until partners take a stronger stance against Trump. On this episode of our podcast, On The Merits, Cohen speaks with Bloomberg Law editor Jessie Kokrda Kamens about her reaction to the Skadden deal and about what power associates have in this ongoing battle between Big Law and the White House. "Associates are the workhorses," she said. "And the partners certainly do not want to be responsible for the work that they historically farm out to associates."
