Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé. Today, I'm thrilled to welcome back my longtime friend, the indefatigable investigative journalist and poet, Greg Palast. Greg and I first crossed paths back in the early ‘90s at the Asheville Poetry Festival, and I was instantly drawn to his fiery passion for truth, a trait that has defined his entire career. Greg's no stranger to hard-hitting journalism; his investigations have exposed some of the biggest stories of our time for The Guardian, BBC Television, and Rolling Stone. His relentless pursuit of truth has led him to uncover corruption across five continents, all fueled by the same fire he had back when we met. In today's episode, we explore Greg's lesser-known side—his poetry. While his voice has often roared through reports like The Best Democracy Money Can Buy and Billionaires & Ballot Bandits, poetry has been a quiet companion along his journey. Greg has a gritty, beat-inspired style, shaped by his early mentorship under Ginsberg and Bukowski. Our conversation veers between verse and the political landscape, diving into the essence of his latest film, Vigilantes, Inc., which investigates the dark underbelly of voter suppression tactics in Georgia, a disturbing echo of Jim Crow-era restrictions. As always, Greg brings an acute sense of humor to even the harshest realities, a quality I've cherished in our exchanges. He's not only a witness to history but a catalyst, embodying the role of the poet-journalist in times of turmoil. With Vigilantes, Inc., narrated by Rosario Dawson and backed by Martin Sheen and George DiCaprio, Greg is once again challenging the powers that be. Today, we share stories, laughter, and insights into how poetry and investigative journalism intersect—two art forms that compel us to ask: if we don't speak out, who will? So join us as we reflect, laugh, and explore the mind of one of journalism's fearless voices.

5x15 is delighted to announce a special event with Nina Stibbe, the 'funniest person who owns a computer' (in the words of Ann Patchett), in conversation with acclaimed memoirist Cathy Rentzenbrink. This is not to be missed! Ten years after her beloved and multi-award winning book Love, Nina, Nina is back with Went to London, Took the Dog, a diary of her return to London in her sixty-first year. After two decades away, Nina is back in the city she used to call home, with her dog, Peggy. Together they take up lodging in Camden for a 'year-long sabbatical'. It's a break from married life back in Cornwall, or even perhaps a fresh start altogether. Nina is not quite sure yet... By turns hilarious and irreverent, joyful as well as poignant, Went to London, Took the Dog is 'like spending an endless afternoon in the most sparkling company' (Frank Cottrell-Boyce). Join us for a sparkling evening in Nina's company, and an enlightening conversation on motherhood, independence, the menopause, branching out and growing up. Praise for Nina Stibbe and Went to London, Took the Dog ‘So sharp and funny, blissfully gossipy, enviably well-observed - it's like she has X-ray vision when it comes to human beings. I couldn't stop reading it. I wish it were twice as long. I loved it' - INDIA KNIGHT ‘I don't think I've enjoyed a diary so much since I read Adrian Mole for the first time - it's a pleasure and a privilege to live in her London.... A future classic. ...THIS is the book everyone is going to be quoting to each other over the table on Christmas Day.' - DAISY BUCHANAN 'Funny, warm, enlightening. The reading equivalent of getting the giggles in the back row of a school assembly' - SATHNAM SANGHERA Speakers Nina Stibbe is the author of seven books. Love, Nina won the Non-Fiction Book of the Year Award at the 2014 National Book Awards, and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year. The book was adapted by Nick Hornby for BBC Television. She is the author of four novels, all of which have been shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction. Her third novel, Reasons to Be Cheerful, is the only novel to date to have won both the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction and the Comedy Women in Print Award for comic fiction. Cathy Rentzenbrink is an acclaimed memoirist whose books include The Last Act of Love, How to Feel Better and Dear Reader. Her first novel is Everyone is Still Alive and Write It All Down is a friendly and down to earth guide to writing a memoir. Cathy regularly chairs literary events, interviews authors, runs creative writing courses and speaks and writes on life, death, love, and literature. Despite being shortlisted for various prizes, the only thing Cathy has ever won is the Snaith and District Ladies' Darts Championship when she was 17. She is now sadly out of practice. Tonight, we complete the Hammer Quatermass trilogy (albeit out of order) with The Quatermass Xperiment (a.k.a. The Creeping Unknown in the US) is a 1955 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, based on the 1953 BBC Television serial written by Nigel Kneale. Produced by Anthony Hinds, one of the of 37 films he made for Hammer. Hinds wrote a number of films under the  pseudonym 'John Elder' which he adopted after Her couldn't afford a screenwriter for The Curse of the Werewolf). It is directed by Val Guest, writer and director of the Cannon and Ball vehicle, Boys in Blue and Confessions of a Window Cleaner. (and of course director of Quatermass 2) The film stars Oscar Nominee, Brian Donlevy in his fist of 2 portrayals as the eponymous Professor Bernard Quatermass. Richard Wordsworth, Who feature as a sinister taxidermist with James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock's second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much, as well as appearing in British TV dramas such as Huntingtower and The Tripods, and notablble in other Hammer films - The Revenge of Frankenstein and The Curse of the Werewolf, plays the tormented astronaut Carroon. Jack Warner plays Inspector Lomax (insanely famous in his time as the titular Dixon of Dock Green appearing in 432 episodes on tv from 1955 to 1976) Margia Dean plays Judith Carroon. Dean only passed away, sadly, this June. We also briefly see Thora Hird in one scene as 'Rosie'. Thora lived so long and did achieved so much, she was the subject of 'This is your Life' Twice. The Quatermass Experiment was originally a six-part TV serial broadcast by BBC Television in 1953. It was an enormous success with critics and audiences alike, later described by film historian Robert Simpson as "event television, emptying the streets and pubs". Among its viewers was the forementioned Hammer Films producer, Anthony Hinds, who was immediately keen to buy the rights for a film version. Nigel Kneale also saw the potential for a film adaptation and, at his urging, the BBC touted the scripts around a number of producers. Kneale met with Sidney Gilliat to discuss the scripts but Gilliat was reluctant to buy the rights as he felt any film adaptation would inevitably receive an 'X' Certificate from the British Board of Film Censors. Hammer's offer met some resistance within the BBC, with one executive expressing reservations that The Quatermass Experiment was not suitable material for the company, but the rights were nevertheless sold for an advance of £500. Kneale was a BBC employee at the time, which meant that his scripts were owned entirely by the BBC. He received no extra payment for the sale of the film rights. This became a matter of some resentment on Kneale's part, and when his BBC contract came up for renewal he demanded and secured control over any future film rights for his work. Kneale remained bitter over the affair until the BBC made an ex-gratia payment of £3,000 to him in 1967, in recognition of his creation of Quatermass.  We also include the concept Album 'Victor Caroon', available on Soundcloud here:https://soundcloud.com/victor-caroon Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Writer & podcaster Adam Leslie joins Tyler for the first of a two-parter, examining Spike Milligan's Q series on BBC Television, from Q5 in 1969 to Q9 in 1980 (there was also There's A Lot of It About in 1982 but we don't really talk about that). It was heralded as a massively influential show, particularly upon the group which would shortly after the transmission of Q5 come together to create Monty Python's Flying Circus, yet by the end, while it was still extremely funny in places, it was showing its age with some of Spike's comedy stylings seeming creaky when compared to those hip and happenin' young comedy turks behind Not The Nine O'Clock News. Adam & Tyler run through Q from A-N this week, taking in such topics as David Lodge's greatest film, Jehovah's Burglars, bosoms & battleaxes, raspberries, Michael Parkinson with a Black & Decker and much much more! There's also some background to the creation of Q5 and a salute to the many stalwart regulars, including the aforementioned Lodge, Bob Todd and, of course, John Bluthal. Next week: O-Z!

Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023. = = = ‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read' Toby Hadoke When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself. Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV's best-loved and most successful programmes. It's the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey. Drawing from the BBC's written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who's first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme's path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation. Quatermass and the Pit (or as it's known in the US ‘Five Million Years to Earth') is a 1967 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, a sequel to the earlier Hammer films The Quatermass Xperiment and Quatermass 2 (see General Witchfinders episode 17 for more details). Like its predecessors it is based on a BBC Television serial, of the same name, written by Podcast hero Nigel Kneale. It was directed by Roy Ward Baker (who is responsible for such highs as A Night to Remember And such lows and The scars of Dracula and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires - see episodes 28 and 31 respectively)  And this incarnation stars Andrew Keir (featured in Cleopatra, Dracula: Prince of Darkness and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.)  in the title role as Professor Bernard Quatermass, replacing Brian Donlevy, who played the role in the two earlier films. James Donald, Barbara Shelley (also in Dracula: Prince of Darkness and The Gorgon) and Julian Glover (whos been in some little known films called Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Empire strikes back, Games of thrones, several Doctor Who stories and load of other stuff including being the voice of a giant spider in Harry Potter) they appear in co-starring roles.Nigel Kneale wrote the first draft of the screenplay in 1961, but difficulties in attracting interest from American co-financiers meant the film did not go into production until 1967. The director, Roy Ward Baker, was chosen because of his experience with technically demanding productions such as A Night to Remember; this was the first of six films that he directed for Hammer. Andrew Keir, playing Quatermass, found making the film an unhappy experience, believing Baker had wanted Kenneth More to play the role. Owing to a lack of space, the film was shot at the MGM-British Studios in Elstree, Borehamwood, rather than Hammer's usual home at the time, which was the Associated British Studios, also in Elstree. The plot of the film verison was condensed to fit the shorter running time, the main casualty being the removal of a subplot involving a journalist named James Fullalove, and the climax was altered slightly to make it more cinematic. The setting for the pit was changed from a building site to the London Underground. The closing scene of the television version, in which Quatermass pleads with humanity to prevent Earth becoming the "second dead planet", was also dropped, in favour of a shot of Quatermass and Judd sitting alone amid the devastation wrought by the Martian spacecraft. The script was sent to John Trevelyan of the British Board of Film Censors in December 1966. Trevelyan replied that the film would require an X certificate and complained about the sound of the vibrations from the alien ship, the scenes of the Martian massacre, scenes of destruction and panic as the Martian influence takes hold and the image of the Devil. It has been suggested that Tobe Hooper's 1985 Lifeforce is largely a remake of Hammer's Quatermass and the Pit. In an interview, director Tobe Hooper discussed how Cannon Films gave him $25 million, free rein, and Colin Wilson's book The Space Vampires. Hooper then shares how giddy he was: "I thought I'd go back to my roots and make a 70mm Hammer film.Three decades on, Andrew Keir reprised the role of the Professor in "The Quatermass Memoirs", a five-part docudrama scripted by Nigel Kneale and transmitted on BBC Radio 3 in March 1996. In the first of a new series of interviews with game changers from the world of culture, business, sports and politics, Amol Rajan speaks to actor Sir Ian McKellen. One of the most celebrated performers of his generation, McKellen has long defied convention and expectation. In this probing hour-long interview, Rajan asks the man who played Gandalf about growing up in Lancashire during the Second World War, launching his acting career at Cambridge alongside Derek Jacobi and finally choosing to reveal the truth publicly about his sexuality in 1988. Regularly lauded as the heir to Laurence Olivier, McKellen is just as comfortable analysing the intricacies of Shakespearian drama as he is revealing the debt his X-Men films owe to the civil rights movements. He tells Rajan about what it was like to be part of the first gay kiss on BBC Television in 1970 and mulls on his own mortality in the aftermath of the pandemic.

October 21, 1977 saw the release of what would eventually become one of the best selling albums of all time:  Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell The idea for the album came from a musical that writer/composer Jim Steinman had conceived back in 1974.  Meat Loaf & Jim spent most of 1975 re-writing & recording the album, then close to 2 years auditioning the record - and getting rejected by every single record company they presented it to. After a concert video of the title track aired on BBC Television in the UK, the album gained A LOT of traction...and the rest, as they say, is history. Bat Out Hell has sold 43 million copies worldwide, it's certified 14x Platinum in the US, and it's spent a record 530 weeks on the UK Album Charts. Flash forward to the late 90's, when word of a new musical based on the album (and it's sequel, "Bat Out Of Hell II") begins to surface.  The show was officially announced in 2008, workshopped in New York City in 2015, and finally hit the stage in the UK in 2017.  After spending time in London's West End, Toronto, and touring around the world, it was revealed in early 2022 that the Paris Theater in the Paris Hotel & Casino would be home to a new resident production of Bat Out Hell: The Musical. Joining me for this episode of the podcast is veteran Vegas performer, Anne Martinez, who plays the role of "Sloane" in the show. On October 16, 1843, while on a stroll along the Royal Canal in Dublin, mathematician William Rowan Hamilton had an aha moment which led to his famed discovery of the algebraic equations known as quaternions which is now etched on the bridge. Research shows that although creative insight and analytical thinking are distinct modes of thought, they do complement each other. These aha or eureka moments are typically considered the manifestation of creativity in a few creative geniuses; however, having access to one's own creative process can be different for different people. On this episode, professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University, Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the Psychonomic Society, and international best-selling author, John Kounios, Ph.D., discusses the process and science of creative insight and analytical thinking that marks our discovery of a brilliant solution for small or big problems. We all need strong Executive Function mastery to counter the effects of a lack of insight and a lack of immersive experience into “problematic” components which can take away the focus needed for solving one's own problems.About John KouniosJohn Kounios, PhD, is a professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University. He has published cognitive neuroscience research on insight, creativity, problem solving, memory, and Alzheimer's disease and coauthored (with Mark Beeman) the international Amazon Bestseller, The Eureka Factor: Aha Moments, Creative Insight, and the Brain (Random House). John's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation and has been reported by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times (London), National Public Radio and was featured in BBC Television and Discovery Science Channel documentaries. His work was profiled by The New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post and is part of a permanent exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. It's good to be alive in 1985! Joining Tyler this week - after finishing his shift operating the pornograph machine in the Forbidden Records Dept – is Sean Gaffney, who was keen to talk about the Goons' celebrated take on Orwell's 1984 which had been dramatized for BBC Television merely weeks earlier. 1985 was received so warmly by listeners that it was swiftly followed by a restaged episode but the show we will be focusing on is the first (and best) version. We talk about how closely it follows the narrative of the source material, how its overwhelming topicality did not hinder the laughs and speculate as to the reasons for some script and performance decisions – what happened to the Ben Lyon gag? Was the old antique shop owner meant to be Crun or not? Plus we find out about Ronnie Waldman, Maurice Winnick, Len Hutton and Issy Bonn. Just before the Christmas break, I had the chance to interview -via the magic of the internet- Pen Vogler: author of "Dinner with Mr Darcy" and "Dinner with Dickens" who also had curated the exhibition "Food Glorious Food" at the Charles Dickens Museum. She edited Penguin's Great Food series, writes and reviews on food history for the press and has recreated recipes from the past for BBC Television. On this episode though, we actually chat about her latest book "Scoff" which is a history of food and class in UK through the ages. Her title, Scoff, plays on two meanings, the first being to chow down and fill your boots with whatever good things come your way, while the second means to mock or negate another person's way of life – their taste, in other words! So together we trawl through history and find out why breakfast is crucial mean, what is an important and healthy breakfast, and of course what does it say about your status and your standing in society; what is the most breakfasty breakfast food you should eat?Of course we explore some recipes, and some delicious ideas for breakfast or brunch (ever so fancy and trendy!) and get deeper into fads and fashionable things, how they change though history and what is -or not- nutritious for you. Needless to say we both hate, and scoff in the notion of cereals for breakfast! Yet we must endure their presence; they are so ubiquitous everywhere we turn! Oh the irony!Happy listening! The Delicious LegacyMusic by Pavlos Kapralos. This week actor, writer and comedian Toby Hadoke guests on the show to talk to Tyler about the Nigel Kneale-influenced Goon Show episode The Scarlet Capsule, which aired the week after the final instalment of Quatermass & The Pit was shown on BBC Television in 1959. Toby talks about his career and enthusiasms while also discussing the Goons and British comedy in general. We discover that The Scarlet Capsule is in some ways a faithful parody of its source material while in other respects departs entirely from the plot – lawks, imagine a Goon Show doing such a thing – and remains one of the most fondly remembered episodes of the show thanks in no small part to its inclusion on the 1960 Parlophone release The Best Of The Goon Shows Number 2 (see last week's episode of Goon Pod for more information) Toby was a very warm and generous guest and it was a delight to speak with him – he even found time to play a short round of “How Many Characters Were Called [insert christian name here] In Doctor Who?” We hope you enjoy the conversation too.
