Rick starts the show by referencing the preceding rant edited out of the produced show. To wit: The live show took on the gazillion emails the guys have been getting about which celebrity wore what watch at the Met Gala. But onto something more important — grammar! Whether you could or couldn't care less, that is the question. Now, down to some actual content. David's latest “Grinding Gears” column is all about the gap between watchmakers and the consumers who don't know what they're looking at. This divide causes some problems, as David explains. Ariel has a lot to say about this, especially regarding value. Next up? Guess the Price of the Seiko! Then, onto a discussion of the Seagull Okeanos release, which also results in a discussion of pricing and tariffs. Ariel asks, “Why are tariffs invading our hobby?” And that is the question of the day. Kevin Roberts joins the foursome to discuss the latest from Doxa, Breguet, and other brands. Tune in to hear the latest.

Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. This week, we cover the latest news on watches and other subjects. We discuss the 250th Anniversary of Breguet and several other high-end brands. It was a relatively quiet week on the watch front, but there were still releases and news. Breguet released its first anniversary model, and it's worth some words. This leads to our thoughts on other higher-end brands. Also, we discuss Rolex, but not in the way you'd expect.HandgelenkskontrolleWe kick off the episode with a discussion about a vintage mesh JB Champion bracelet Mike purchased on eBay. It's a nice accompaniment to a Speedmaster, but the current Forstner is a fantastically accurate reissue. Then we discuss several TV shows, including You, Daredevil, and Dope Thief. Balazs has bought new New Balance sneakers, which leads to a discussion on some of the brand's other releases. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing a 14K Movado "Ellipse" he recently received from his father. Balazs is also wearing a recently acquired family piece, the Girard-Perregaux Scuderia Ferrari Foudroyante Rattrapante.Breguet, Rolex, and other newsWe talk about Rolex because Balazs is potentially in the market for a new model. The Datejust has become quite expensive, especially with the white gold fluted bezel. This has Balazs considering an Oyster Perpetual with a dark green dial. We'll report back once he visits the local AD's to see if there is a waiting list. Breguet released the Classique Souscription 2025, a 40mm gold watch with an enamel dial and one hand. This spawns a longer discussion about the brand and how we hope great releases are coming during this important year. Blancpain and, ultimately, Vacheron get pulled into the episode as we long for iconic classic dress watches. We hope you enjoyed today's show. As always, if you have future topics, please feel free to let us know.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is out sick (but he is listening). David and Ripley are present and accounted for, and Ariel jumps right in with a discussion of some of his predictions for 2025. He thinks the theme song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best background for this discussion because we're in somewhat of a time warp. His top five trends? Listen in to find out. Hint: There are five, and he goes through them one by one and asks the others what they think of his powers of prophecy. Ariel then turns attention to two fun year-end roundups, the 10 articles we published in 2024 that got the most eyeballs and our top 10 articles with the highest number of reader comments. Next up, there's a discussion of the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon watch, and the guys go back and forth on the merits of this particular design. What about the TAG Heuer's return as the official Formula 1 timekeeper? David gives an overview of what this article covers, both historically and in the present. MB&F's new M.A.D. Edition watches are the next topic of conversation, along with the various ways you can get your hands on one. Talk gets racy with consideration of Breguet's Classique 7145 Lunar New Year 2025 (luxe House of Slytherin, says Ripley). There's a segway to convo about American watchmaking, and Ripley elaborates on Mike's thesis: There will be no full-scale return to American watchmaking. Instead of Hit, Miss, Maybe, the team ends the show by looking at the latest Favre Leuba.

After some chitchat about how expensive it is for brands to attend Watches and Wonders, the guys jump right into a day in the life of Benc, who's starting his day with this podcast and then heading off to launch a new watch! He gives us some of the backstory of the new StudioUnderd0g 03 Series Monopusher, which dovetails with the topic of collaborations and their possibilities and limitations. Next up, there's a philosophical discussion of aBlogtoWatch's Mike Razak's recent column in which he poses existential questions related to our shared hobby. Then, levity returns with Guess the Price of the Seiko, a regular feature on this podcast. After a once-over of the controversial Ulysse Nardin Freak X Gumball 3000 limited edition, the team closes with a round of Hit, Miss, Maybe. Join us as we welcome William Massena back to Keeping Time podcast. Fresh from Geneva Watch Days, join us as we catch up with William, one of the most knowledgeable and highly respected authorities on all things watches. With a breadth of knowledge spanning the entire history of watchmaking, the former CEO of Antiquorum Watches (auction house) and Managing Director of Time Zone offers a perspective and level of expertise few can challenge. The conversation begins with a deep-dive into the newest product launch from Massena Lab, a striking and unique vintage-inspired, modern take on a classic Regatta Yacht Timer. William explains the unique design approach and discusses his partner for this latest collaboration. The new watch is the first piece launched by a new watch company, ALBISHORN, with a very interesting design-ethos. The patented movement is just one noteworthy element of the new watch. Following discussion of William's eponymous brand, Massena Lab, we switch gears to discuss the recent Geneva Watch Days (GWD). Created just a couple of years ago, during the pandemic, William fully describes the purpose behind the show, the founders of the event and the experience of attending. Let's just say that any watch event that can be enjoyed wearing shorts and flip-flops whilst sipping Rosé is surely worthy of serious consideration.  William brings the show to life for our listeners and fully describes the vibe, experience and intentions of this important newcomer to the watch-industry calendar. The newest GWD releases are discussed. Of course, being a conversation between watch nerds, William Massena and Jeremy Oster, the conversation meanders and explores side-topics with a great detour into unraveling the history of the modern Breguet brand (pre-Swatch Group) and Daniel Roth. The conversation further delves into the early history and importance of FP Journe and Vianney Halter and the connection with Breguet. Incredibly, this fascinating conversational diversion occurs whilst discussing Konstantin Chaykin's record breaking "ThinKing" watch. As always, the conversation with William is natural, free-flowing and filled with information and insight that will be new, even for the most knowledgeable listeners. We hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoy creating Keeping Time Podcast. Visit Keeping Time with Oster Watches blog for more podcast and photos. Visit osterjewelers.com

Today: the vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava episode. Introduced in 1932, though it wouldn't be called the "Calatrava" until years later, the Patek Philippe Calatrava is perhaps the most iconic watch ever, laying the blueprint for the modern dress watch. It was also introduced at a pivotal time in the history of Patek Philippe, just after it had been acquired by the Stern family. After the acquisition, the Stern brothers hired Jean Pfister, a technical master who would lead the development of the first serially produced complications that defined so much of Patek's collection during the mid-20th century. But first came the Calatrava ref. 96, Patek's first serially-produced reference. I called up founder Ben Clymer and client advisor Rich Fordon to discuss the Patek Calatrava. We start by asking: what even is a "Calatrava," and what isn't? Then, we jump through the history of the line, from the original reference 96 through the golden era of the refs. 570, 565, 2508, and others (depending on your definition of "Calatrava"), through the hobnail ref. 3919 and then the rebirth of the traditional Calatrava in the 1980s and '90s. We also take a look at a few of our favorite overlooked Calatrava references as well as the most expensive ones to ever sell at auction. In the show notes below, I've tried to include a link to each reference we mention to help you follow along with our discussion. Thanks as always for listening – let us know if you liked this model-focused discussion, and if so, what model you'd like to hear us discuss next.  Show Notes3:55: The Calatrava collection on Patek's website5:05: A Visual Guide to Rare Patek Philippe Calatravas5:50: Patek Philippe ref. 3919 (Hodinkee Shop)11:54: Introducing: Audemars Piguet Mini Royal Oaks13:18: Steel Patek Calatrava ref. 96 with sector dial at Sotheby's16:36: The 'Imperial Patek Philippe' Owned By The Last Emperor Of China Sells For $6.2 Million17:22: The Patek Ref. 565 With Breguet Dial For Sale At Phillips17:30: Patek ref. 570 in yellow gold (Hodinkee Shop)18:24: White gold Patek ref. 570 (Hodinkee Shop)21:30: Alfredo Paramico Talking Watches, featuring his three two-tone dial 570s24:35: Patek Philippe ref. 250928:45: The Patek Philippe 2526, And Why It's A Watch To Pay Attention To34:52: Introducing: The Rexhep Rexhepi Chronomètre Contemporain II With Ruby Indices, Limited To Ten Pieces40:26: Patek 2577 with enamel dial at Phillips42:28: Patek ref. 530 with black dial and Breguet numerals that sold for CHF 1.4 million43:05: Patek ref. 570 with two-tone dial and Breguet numerals that sold for CHF 3.3 million (most expensive Calatrava sold at auction)47:26: Patek ref. 3796 (Hodinkee Shop)51:10: Patek ref. 3923 for Harrod's 150th anniversary (Mr. Watchley)52:00: Andy Warhol's Patek 2526 with Breguet numerals

Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air where we discuss our recent picks of the best watches under €5,000. We apologize for the late publishing of this week's episode, but travel is back in season. Get ready for another candid episode with our usual pre-topic banter!Recently, Balazs and I contributed to a running topic on Fratello about the best watches under €5,000. Articles like this always generate a fair amount of feedback which we greatly appreciate. We discuss our picks, some of the feedback, and how the industry has changed. In particular, some of our favorite brands are now priced out of this all-important spending cap. Still, there are some fantastic new and used watches out there.Kettle KiteThis week, we are coming to you from the Big Apple and the Big Smoke! Before getting to the kettle kite and our main topic of watches under €5,000, we talk about a recent Longines meetup in London. We also discuss how important face-to-face gatherings are to keep interest alive in vintage watches. Balazs is currently in the USA and will be for the next week. He's wearing his faithful G-Shock (similar to, but not exactly the model above). Mike is wearing a watch he has in for review, the Ollech & Wajs OW M-110 AS. It's a great watch that we will feature soon enough on the site. Our picks under €5,000Next, we come to the main topic of our favorite watches under €5,000. Mike published his article first and chose pieces from Seiko, Breitling, Nomos, and Breguet. Balazs came with his article a couple of weeks later and chose entries from Grand Seiko, Ming, and Omega. He also threw in various vintage chronograph options. We discuss why we chose these models along with some of the comments we received. Finally, we discuss how brands like Omega and Rolex no longer play in this market if we are looking at retail prices. A lot has changed within the past several years indeed! As always, thank you for listening! If you have any ideas for future shows, please feel free to let us know!

On top of that, he's also the founder of his own watch brand, Berneron, which has debuted the impressive, elegant Mirage, a shaped watch with a shaped movement that challenges many of the established conventions of watch design. Berneron explains the design and the very specific decisions that went into the Mirage and what his future plans for the Berneron brand are. Called "a poem in clockwork," the self-winding Breguet watch made for Marie Antionette was meant to be the most beautiful example of mechanical art in the world. Yet when she was imprisoned in the Tour du Temple, she wanted only a simple watch that would mark the passing of the hours until her meeting with the guillotine. Listen as Rebecca Struthers, the watchmaker, antiquarian horologist, and author of the Hands of Time talks with EconTalk's Russ Roberts about how our need to keep time has shaped watchmaking history, and how, in turn, the development of watches has shaped human culture and society. Other topics include the precise and painstaking craft of bespoke watchmaking and the challenge of restoring watches from another time.

With our first year behind us (thanks for all the well wishes!), we're back with episode 53 of A Week In Watches with new releases from Tissot, Breguet, Seiko & more. One of our favorite watches of the summer (thus far) has come from Tissot, and it's a forged carbon regatta timer called the Sideral. Yes, it's a callback to something they've done in the past, and yes, it's still awesome. With a carbon case and Powermatic 80 movement, this is a ton of watch (and funk) for about $1,100, see more here. Elsewhere, Breguet gives us a first look at new Type 20 and Type XX watches, with a stunning new movement and a date window that may leave you scratching your head. Head to the video on YouTube to give us your take on the date, as well as the rest of the watches in this week's episode.Rounding things out, we've got news of a new Pontos S Diver from Maurice Lacroix, which is a welcome site from the brand, though we wonder if it could have done with a slight bit of modernization? Speaking of, Seiko has modernized their King Seiko with a trimmer case architecture and a new movement which brings a date to the regular production modern King Seiko. Finally, IWC has brought the silver dial back to the Mark Pilot watch and it works about as well as you'd expect, which is to say, pretty damn well. This week's episode was brought to you by the Windup Watch Shop. Mel Bonis's name may not be a familiar one these days, but she produced somewhere in the region of three hundred compositions. There's no doubt that she was sensitive to gender discrimination. It's why she chose to publish her music under the name of Mel rather than her birth name Mélanie. She was born in 1858 to parents of modest means. Her father worked for the watch company Breguet, still in business today, and her mother worked in the haberdashery trade. Neither of them held any particular interest in music, so it was down to young Mélanie to teach herself the play the family's piano. Her talent was recognised by a visiting friend who facilitated a meeting with one of the leading lights of the day, César Franck, an esteemed professor of organ at Paris's prestigious Conservatoire. Mélanie enrolled and showed great promise as a student, winning several end of year prizes. Her studies came to an abrupt end when her parents refused to give their consent to her marriage to a fellow student there, a poet, critic and singer, Amédée Hettich. Her life took a sharp turn two years later when, at the instigation of her parents, she married a twice widowed man of comfortable means. Thereafter her life as a composer had to take a back seat to the demands of raising five step-children and three of her own children with her husband, Albert Domange. Even so, she managed to continue to compose, producing music for her own instrument, the piano, and in almost every other genre as well. For the second week in a row, Balazs has a guest on the podcast, another member of the Fratello family. After last week's discussion with Dave about space watches this week, we have our one and only Lex on Fratello On Air. The man known for refined taste in clothing and timepieces is also somewhat of a Breguet fan. His impressive knowledge of the brand was a delight to listen to whenever it came up in a conversation. So it was logical for Balazs to sit down with Lex and chat about the Swatch Group's crown jewel.Wrist checkWe do not see Lex without something denim, so it was no surprise that he was sporting a piece that's the love child of a watch company and a denim brand: the Oris Diver 65 Momotaro edition. The watch is the perfect blend of material and colors. A steel case with a bronze bezel, green dial, and indigo-blue denim strap. Such a fine eclectic ensemble. Not to mention that the watch is readily available on most used watch sites and for a very competitive price too. Great choice, Lex!Balazs wore a loaner for the show, but boy, what a timepiece it was. He happened to have a Breguet with him that belonged to a friend. So Balazs chose that particular piece, the Breguet Classique 5157, as his wrist companion for the episode. It is an elegant and simple take on a dress watch with a beautifully decorated movement and display case back. Yet the magic of the 5157 lies in its breathtaking guilloché dial. And don't forget those lovely Breguet hands, either.BreguetFinally, the boys arrive at the topic of this episode and the mighty Maison of Breguet. A brand that started in 1775 and, over the centuries, has had an incredibly intriguing history, just like its denominator and founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet. Lex and Balazs walk through the past and talk about some of the inventions still used in today's watchmaking. Lex visited the atelier a few weeks ago, and we are lucky enough to hear his thought about that trip before we move to the final stage of the episode; watches.
