This time on Shred With Shifty, Chris Shiflett steps out on his own. Shiflett starts up with a video montage of fan-submitted solo takes on leads from Charlie Starr, Rivers Cuomo, Mike McCready, and others. Some are more faithful than others, and Shifty celebrates the originality. “Learn it kinda, and then put your own twist on it,” he encourages. Next, he's cued up clips from his sit-downs with Paisley, Starr, McCready, and one of his favorite guitarists, Jawbreaker's Blake Schwarzenbach. Then it's time for a round of questions from the listeners. Fans probe Shifty about anything and everything: his favorite Van Halen deep cut, whether he still woodsheds scales, his opinion on modelers, and what makes him nervous during his biggest shows. When someone asks the secret to band-life longevity, Shiflett answers earnestly. “I always say the trick to being in a band isn't always necessarily how you play whatever instrument it is,” he explains. “It's how well can you sit in tight quarters with a bunch of other people and not annoy the fuck out of them.” Later, he talks about why cowboy chords are actually his go-to “guitar-store lick,” and has a hilarious miscommunication with a listener asking if they should “top-wrap” their Les Paul. “What the fuck is top-wrapping a Les Paul?” Shifty responds incredulously. “I'm just gonna say no. Leave your Les Paul how it is.” Be sure to stick around to hear about Shiflett's worst onstage guitar-tone debacle. Hint: it happened during a late-night television performance with the Foos. On this week's Shred With Shifty, Chris Shiflett is joined by one of his all-time favorite players: Blake Schwarzenbach, the 6-string architect behind California punk band Jawbreaker's simple, noisy, orchestral rippers. But before things really get rolling, Shifty gets his heartbroken as Schwarzenbach squashes rumors that Jawbreaker might have a new record in the works: “There's no truth to it,” he says. Shifty and Schwarzenbach talk about the band's trajectory up to and after Dear You, their major-label breakout record which ditched their indie punk-rock production style for a slicker sound. But the band's fans didn't approve of the perceived sell-out—a concern Schwarzenbach thinks isn't so present nowadays. “Selling out is not a concern I think for younger people in a way that it was in our time,” he says. “Selling out seems to be this weird virtue.” Schwarzenbach remembers recording at the same studio as fellow Bay Area punks Rancid and realizing Jawbreaker would be left in the dust: “It was clear to me who was gonna win,” he grins. Schwarzenbach admits he's not a virtuoso lead player, but over the years, the augmented, melodic chording of Jimmy Page blended with the elemental intensity of '80s D.C. hardcore to create his unique style, which uses octaves and drone notes to build melody and discord at the same time. He recalls the original recording rig on “Accident Prone,” including a Sovtek Big Muff, a white Les Paul, and a hot-rodded Marshall JMP. Then, playing a Gretsch Tennessee Rose Chet Atkins 1963 reissue, he guides Shifty through the tense riffing on the track. When Shiflett suggests there's an element of complexity to the part, Schwarzenbach corrects him: “Chris, I'm afraid what you're going to find out in your podcast here is that what you think is finesse is just sloth.” Click below to subscribe to the podcast! We close our fourth season with an incredible interview with the remarkable Jeremy Chatelain.  Originally from Utah's hardcore scene, fronting the band's Insight and Iceburn, he made his way to New York City and found himself fronting a “supergroup” that became Handsome. Handsome, included ex-Helmet guitarist Peter Mengede and ex-Quicksand guitarist Tom Capone recorded a self-titled debut for Epic Records. The album is known for its aggressive music and incredible lyrics and continues influencing musicians.  Kerrang! listed Handsome as one of the "12 most underrated albums of the '90s," while Louder Sound included them on a list of the "top 50 cult metal bands". After he left Handsome, Chatelain formed Jets to Brazil with singer Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbox. The band recorded three well-received albums from 1998 - 2002 In 2005 Jeremy joined the band Helmet to play bass, replacing Frank Bello on the Size Matters tour, but left in September 2006.  Since 2000 he has written and performed with his alt-country leaning band Cub Country. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two veterans of ‘90s rock who went on to form bands that referenced air travel in their name and whose biggest bands both start with Jaw: Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and J. Robbins of Jawbox. Sorry if that was confusing, I'll clear it up for you. Blake Schwarzenbach was and is the singer and guitarist of the band Jawbreaker, which had its initial run from 1986 until 1996, at which time they acrimoniously splintered after longtime fans turned their backs on 1995's Dear You, mostly because these dogmatic listeners were mad that the band had signed to a major label. These things were a big deal then, which seems kind of quaint now. History was incredibly kind to both Jawbreaker and Dear You, so much so that in 2017 they reformed to headline Chicago's massive Riot Fest, and they've been playing together on and off ever since. In the intervening years, Schwarzenbach also played in other great bands, most notably Jets to Brazil, which is what I was referencing earlier. Jawbreaker is on tour now, and they're bringing along some of their favorite bands to open, which brings us to… Jawbox, which followed a sorta similar trajectory to Jawbreaker. They came together in the late ‘80s, released a couple of incredible albums for a respected independent label, and then moved into the big leagues, with all the baggage and joy that might bring. Jawbox split in 1997, and Robbins went on to form Burning Airlines—are you seeing a pattern here?—but Jawbox reconvened in 2019. Those two bands certainly aren't the beginning and end of Robbins' amazing contributions to the world of music, though: Prior to Jawbox he was in Government Issue—you'll hear them referred to as GI in this chat—he's served as producer for a number of bands over the years, including Jets to Brazil, the Promise Ring, the Dismemberment Plan, Against Me, and other bands that make my 1990s heart sing. I hope you'll notice I haven't said emo once yet. In this conversation, J. and Blake talk about what it feels like to play shows together again after all these years—and all this pandemic. Blake compliments J. on his psychedelic guitar playing, and J. isn't sure what to make of that. And we learn—I think for the first time—that Jawbox briefly considered calling themselves Jawbreaker, before J. discovered Jawbreaker's first single at a record store and crossed it off his list. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to J. Robbins and Blake Schwarzenbach for chatting. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.

Upon the release of their debut album Unfun in 1990 Jawbreaker was almost instantly beloved.  They were embraced by the DIY punk rock community so fanatically that hardcore devotes of the band became known as “The Cult of Blake” a nod to their love of singer/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach’s confessional, first person lyrics.  When they released ’95’s Dear You on a major label the rough edges had been smoothed and the production radio-friendly, the backlash was fierce.  Long time fans burned their records and famously sat on the floor with their backs to the band during the tour for the album.  They broke up shortly after and never released another album.  On episode 56 we go back and discuss both records, pitting them against each other to determine if Unfun is really as good or Dear You as bad as they were originally considered some 20+ years ago.   Recommended Listening   Etc.  https://open.spotify.com/album/1mi0IPI3wcQL9ixMxKWxz9?si=bTUq-C6DTqGvs2ZwIRMuxw   Jets To Brazil Orange Rhyming Dictionary https://open.spotify.com/album/5zaVtrjodNQru22Rj4FIcD?si=_4XOndHqRXmDYBXdWZ239w   Samiam Soar  https://open.spotify.com/album/6d01sfewFiP2e9wpmA7Dbp?si=7KnX2gWCTFuLF4rcO-fRgg   Compilation: Jawbreaker Tribute:  Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault https://www.discogs.com/Various-Bad-Scene-Everyones-Fault-Jawbreaker-Tribute/release/4078319   Movie Jawbreaker: Don’t Breakdown  https://www.dontbreakdown.com

This week on Episode 85 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #29), Bobby Pickles chats with Mathias Färm and Erik Ohlsson of the legendary Swedish skate-punk band Millencolin prior to their stop at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, on the North American leg of their 2015 True Brew tour. Pickles probes the two Scandinavian guitarists about that time their mutual friend, Frankie D, an acclaimed tattoo artist who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 35, had the entire band tattoo their signatures onto his leg. Erik says they have the entire encounter on video somewhere and they will post it soon, now that they have heard the news of Frankie’s untimely demise. Bobby also asks the two about Millencolin’s iconic sound, their preference for Viking women, and then relays several offensively idiotic questions that were penned by Bob Noxious. Video of Bobby Pickles’ full-interview with Millencolin can be found on the DSR YouTube page. Vignettes by: Dan of Still Alive, Mark of Madaline, and Shaun Colónand Joel Herrera of A Fat Wreck and Punk Rock Film Fest. Episode 29’s recurring theme: Crapping out on punk rock knowledge. SYNOPSIS OF BANTER Let’s play a game of punk rock craps. “Are you ready to roll the dice, Mr. Pickles!” Bob exclaims, revealing his inclusion in a $1700 football pool and having his mind on his money and his money on his mind. But the Bobs don’t know sports terminology, or gambling terminology for that matter. But they do know about punk rock! Or so they think. Cover songs are like a box of chocolates - and Bob Noxious recommends Richard Cheese.Bouncing Souls also do a string of hometown shows during the holidays, just like theBosstones. The Bobs were on hiatus when Queers bassist Dangerous Dave went on drunken rampage aimed at destroying the band’s drum kit. Bob has zero idea who BoySetsFire is but wants to test Bobby’s punk rock knowledge. Noxious then makes fun of how Bobby answers his fact-checking questions, but Bobby knows it’s only out of insecurity because Bob is most probably a sociopath, and some thing’s are better left unsaid. Bobby keeps on saying “next on the docket” throughout the show, which may become a staple term, just like “grubby little hands”. Bob Brandt wants Pickles to hunt Blake Schwarzenbach down on a Brooklyn sidewalk. Bob says Bobby should catch the Jawbreakerfrontman as he’s exiting a bodega, kitty litter in-hand. Bob says, “Never let another man hold your bag!” when Bobby shares that he left his bag of radio equipment with Jonny X while he moshed in the circle pit at the Millencolin concert. Bob still gets in the pit at 46. Bob says Tom Araya looks downright haggerty in the brand new Slayer video. The Bobs crap out when they roll a 7 with everything on the table! This was a cool one. After recieving more than a few musical gut punches from us in the past, we were pretty surprised when Blake Shwarzenbach becaome a fan of Overnight Drive. We were even more surprised when he gladly accepted our offer to come on the show. Hans and I had no idea what to expect from this one, thinking he may show up just to catch a case. Instead, it was definitely one of our best episodes to date. Dude is a serious trip, and an ideal OND passenger. Please, tell your weird soft-dude friends!
