One complaint I hear a lot from couples is where they feel like their spouse is consenting to sex but isn't enthusiastic about it. These reports sound like, “let's just hurry and get this done.” “I know it's been a while so let me give you sex so that you'll get off my back.” “I know sex is important for our marriage, and if I don't give you sex, I'm afraid you'll stray, besides it's my wifely duty.” Or, “The bible says that I should never deny my husband so I let him have me, even if I don't enjoy it at the moment, because aren't we supposed to make sacrifices – and we'll be rewarded for it later on?” Sexual desire is strongly tied to a sense of self and freedom. But when you don't feel free to be yourself in sex, it can be more harmful than good in your relationship. My guest today is Dr. Cami Hurst. She recently completed an extensive study for her dissertation on the effects of “consensual” yet duty-focused sex in marriages.  I personally gained a lot from this episode. It made me reflect on how important choice and freedom is to a healthy sexual relationship, and how harmful duty sex can be to the intimacy of the marriage. She makes an important distinction between responsive desire (where you may not be in the mood when sex begins but as things get going you generally can get into it and enjoy it) and duty sex, where you don't enjoy it but you feel like you can't say no. She talks about how PTSD symptoms show up in women who engage in duty sex over time. She also talks about what you can do about it!   For more great content like this, check out the following resources: Next Level: https://getyourmarriageon.com/next-level/ Men's coaching program waiting list: https://getyourmarriageon.com/mens-coaching/ Website: getyourmarriageon.com Instagram: @getyourmarriageon Fun and sexy app for married couples: Intimately Us

Part of being an adult is unlearning the things that no longer serve you, and learning new things that bring richer meaning to your life.  When it comes to sex, there's a lot that isn't helpful that we can unlearn, and a lot we can learn to bring deeper meaning and joy to our most important intimate relationships.  I had the pleasure of interviewing Cami Hurst, a talented and passionate certified sex therapist out of Boise Idaho. We talk about how to make sex more “nutritious” and “gourmet” for the couple, why motives (or the why) around improving one's sex life are more important than the “what”, and what to do when your spouse has different sexual preferences than you do.

Feeling rejected by your spouse in any realm can be disheartening, but when the rejection is sexual, it can be exceptionally demoralizing experiencing. Today we are chatting with my long-time friend Cami Hurst. Mom of 4, counselor, and sex therapist - she believes that our sexuality was designed to bring power, connection and pleasure into our lives. She is a passionate counselor, educator, speaker and advocate. She hosts the podcast Sex Therapy 101, has her own private practice, and is the founder of the Association of Sexual Health Professionals of Idaho. She is driven to help couples create LIFE LONG love stories. To do this we must know: The 6 principles of sexual health:1. There must be consent, to prevent any emotional or physical negative effects.2. Non-exploitation, where both parties are free from any power or extortion in retaining sexual favors.3. Honesty, whether or not we are “faking” something or not.4. Shared values, couples need to come together and agree on what is acceptable to prevent hurt feelings.5. Protection from pregnancy and STIs- being honest about exposure.6. Mutual Pleasure- both people have a right to mutual pleasure. There is no “right way” to have a healthy sexual relationship. What is really comes down to is what YOU and YOUR PARTNER agree upon and are BOTH mutually satisfied with. Communication is key and it is important to understand what your expectations are in the relationship in order for it to be successful. She also teaches us about the different forms of sexual desires. Spontaneous desire vs responsive desire. Spontaneous desire is what is most often portrayed in the movies or in books. “I am horny and want sex now”, which is mostly common for men. Whereas, responsive desire is when “sex is not on my mind, but you might be able to talk or touch me into it”. It is important to know that we are not all hard wired the same. You and your partner may not both feel spontaneous desire at the same time. But they may be able to respond to your desire.Appreciating our partner's differences makes for long term fulfilling partnerships- NOT striving for sameness. To continue the conversation or learn more about Cami, you can find her at: https://camihurst.com/ or check out her Sex Therapy 101 Podcast. The book she mentioned in this episode is called: Becoming Clitorate by Laurie Mintz, PhD: https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Cliterate-Orgasm-Equality-Matters/dp/0062484389.You can sign up for the 5 Day Seduce Your Spouse Challenge Here: https://onthebrightersideofmarriage.com/syschallenge
