TILT Parenting: Raising Differently Wired Kids

Today we're talking about something that can make or break the parenting experience: how we align with our partners in raising our kids. My guest is clinical counselor Martina Nova, author of the new book Same Page Parenting, where she offers a practical framework for helping couples move out of blame and into more honest, connected conversations about parenting. In our conversation, Martina and I explore what gets in the way of alignment, from our own histories and fears to the added layers of neurodivergent parenting, navigating differences around discipline, digital habits, and decision-making, and what it takes to stay connected as our kids grow into adulthood. Martina shares thoughtful questions and practical strategies to help couples better understand each other's perspectives and build a more intentional, collaborative approach to parenting.   About Martina Nova Martina Nova is a Registered Clinical Counsellor based in British Columbia and the founder of NovaCare Therapy. She specializes in working with individuals, parents and couples navigating trauma, ADHD, people-pleasing, and early attachment patterns. Martina helps couples move out of blame and into more honest conversations about parenting, emotional needs, and relationship dynamics. In addition to her clinical work, Martina is an author and educator who creates practical tools to help couples communicate more openly about the realities of family life. Her work highlights how many parenting conflicts are less about discipline strategies and more about the histories, fears, and values each partner brings into parenting. Martina regularly shares mental health education through media, speaking, and social platforms, helping parents feel less alone in the complexities of modern parenting. Things you'll learn from this episode  How intentional communication and aligning values create a stronger foundation for parenting and partnership Why using therapy-informed questions helps parents unpack their upbringing, beliefs, and evolving identities How practical tools like weekly check-ins and family-wide conversations foster connection and collaboration Why recognizing and supporting neurodivergence in both parents and children is essential for healthy dynamics How navigating outside pressures, social media, and autonomy supports long-term trust with kids Why maintaining the parent-child relationship into adulthood requires ongoing reflection, flexibility, and shared tools Resources mentioned  Martina Nova's website, Novacare Therapy Same Page Parenting: Align with Your Partner to Raise Happy, Confident, and Resilient Kids by Martina Nova Novacare Therapy Resources Page Martina Nova on Instagram The Gottman Institute Dr. Ross Greene on Using CPS with Very Young Kids (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Ken Ginsburg on Lighthouse Parenting — Loving Guidance for an Enduring Bond (Tilt Parenting podcast) Learn more about your ad choices. Talking Crap About Your Partner Is Ruining Your RelationshipTalking crap about your partner — to friends, on social media, or even in your own head — is one of the most destructive things you can do to a relationship. John and Echo break down why venting to outsiders poisons the well, why you should be proud to show off your partner, and what it really means when you're not. This episode gets raw and real fast.John opens up about a major blowup he had with Echo — yelling in the car, saying things he deeply regrets — and they walk through the whole ugly, honest aftermath together. What started as a fight became a breakthrough: John uncovering a deep-rooted need for external validation tied to childhood wounds he'd never fully processed. Echo shares what it was like to be on the receiving end, how she held her boundary without matching his energy, and why she almost couldn't talk to him at all anymore. Plus — their dog Toto nearly died from a blueberry. Yes, a blueberry. In This EpisodeIf you're shitting on other people's relationships online, it says everything about yoursBeing proud of your partner publicly isn't cringe — not being able to is the red flagWhen you vent to friends or family, you're painting a picture of your partner they won't forgetThe best person to talk to when you're upset with your partner is your partnerExternal validation is a bottomless pit — only self-validation can close it offTaking things personally in your relationship is often about YOU, not your partnerA good partner holds up a mirror — your job is to look, not argue with the reflectionRepairing trust requires actually breaking down your walls, not just saying "I'm sorry"Timestamps0:00 — Don't Poison the Well: Talk to Your Partner First2:54 — Reading the Most Toxic Comments5:03 — It's Projection: Happy People Don't Leave Hateful Comments7:20 — Devaluing Men (or Women) Destroys Your Own Love Life12:15 — Keyboard Warriors and the Addiction to Negative Attention16:16 — Be Proud of Your Partner and Protect Their Name24:29 — Choosing Your Words Wisely Inside and Outside Your Relationship33:39 — John's Big Mistake: The Blowup in the Car43:01 — Uncovering Deep-Rooted Childhood Wounds and Validation Seeking56:55 — The Breakthrough: Taking Responsibility and Rebuilding Trust1:14:43 — The $10,000 Blueberry: Toto's Emergency Surgery Saga1:21:53 — Closing Thoughts and How to Reach UsConnect

Crucial Moments: How Couples Can Navigate Triggers Without Destroying Connection Episode Overview What happens when a trigger hits in your relationship—and everything escalates? In this episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis break down what they call “crucial moments”—those intense emotional experiences where couples either move toward healing or fall back into painful patterns. If you've ever found yourself stuck in the same argument, feeling unheard, or overwhelmed by emotional reactions, this episode will help you understand why those patterns happen—and how to change them. Why Triggers Feel So Overwhelming When a trigger hits, your brain shifts into survival mode. The amygdala activates, your nervous system becomes dysregulated, and your ability to communicate effectively drops. This is why: Conversations escalate quickly You repeat the same arguments You feel misunderstood or dismissed Your partner becomes defensive or shuts down Key Insight: You cannot create connection when your body is in a fight-or-flight state. The Missing Step in Relationship Repair Most couples try to fix the relationship while they're emotionally flooded. Dr. Skinner emphasizes a critical principle: Stabilize yourself first. Then engage your partner. Without emotional regulation, even the best communication tools won't work. Common Mistakes Couples Make During Conflict Many couples unknowingly reinforce disconnection during triggers. Watch for these patterns: 1. Marathon Conversations Trying to resolve everything in one conversation while both partners are overwhelmed 2. Defensiveness Disguised as Empathy Statements like: “I didn't mean to hurt you” “I'm sorry you feel that way” These often feel minimizing instead of supportive 3. Relying Only on Your Partner for Regulation Expecting your partner to calm you down when they may also be triggered 4. Repeating the Same Cycle Having the same argument over and over without new tools or awareness How to Respond in Triggered Moments (What Actually Works) 1. Pause and Regulate Before responding, ask yourself: Am I emotionally stable right now? Is my body calm enough to have this conversation? If not, step away and regulate first. 2. Use Outside Support Sometimes your partner is not the right person in that moment to help you regulate. Consider: A trusted friend A support group A mentor or sponsor This can help you return to the conversation with clarity. 3. Shift from Reactivity to Curiosity Instead of reacting, try: “Help me understand what you're experiencing” “Tell me more about what you're feeling” This lowers defensiveness and builds connection. 4. Take Responsibility for Your Emotional Response Your emotions are valid—but how you express them matters. Healthy communication includes: Emotional honesty Self-awareness Respectful expression Understanding the Power Struggle in Relationships After betrayal or disconnection, couples often fall into power imbalances: One partner holds information or control The other feels uncertain, hurt, or reactive True healing requires moving away from: “One-up / one-down” dynamics And toward: Mutual honesty, vulnerability, and accountability Why Some Couples Stay Stuck for Years If you feel like you're not making progress, it's often due to: Incomplete or staggered disclosure Lack of emotional regulation skills Repeating patterns without addressing root issues Avoiding deeper vulnerability Key Insight: Without new skills, the same patterns will continue—no matter how much you talk. A Better Way Forward Healing doesn't come from saying more—it comes from learning how to show up differently. That includes: Regulating your nervous system Communicating with clarity and compassion Practicing new patterns consistently Building emotional safety over time Key Takeaways You cannot be relational when you are emotionally dysregulated Personal stabilization is the foundation of relationship repair Triggers require skillful responses, not reactive ones Both partners play a role in creating change Progress comes from practice, not just insight Resources Mentioned in This Episode Intimacy Repair Method (IRM) Course Emotional Regulation & Nervous System Awareness Structured Disclosure Process Role Play Practice for Communication Skills Call to Action If your relationship feels stuck in repetitive conflict, you don't have to keep guessing. Money conversations can feel loaded… emotional… sometimes even explosive. And for most couples, money only gets talked about when something goes wrong. In this episode, I'm sharing a powerful conversation with Ramit Sethi, author of I Will Teach You to Be Rich, about how the language we use around money shapes our relationships.Instead of asking reactive questions like “Why did you spend that?” or “How are we going to pay this off?,” Ramit challenges couples to focus on the bigger picture: the life they actually want to build together. He introduces the idea of a “Rich Life Review”—a simple monthly conversation where you and your partner look at key numbers, celebrate wins, and talk about your goals.Because the real problem isn't the $20 purchases couples argue about…It's that we rarely ask the $30,000 questions that shape our future. If you've ever felt awkward or stuck talking about money with your partner, this episode will give you a framework to start healthier, more productive conversations—and design a life you're truly excited to live.Click play to hear all of this and:[00:00] Why most couples only talk about money when there's a problem[02:00] How the language we use about money shapes our relationships[03:45] Why Ramit believes most couples argue about the wrong financial issues[05:00] The difference between $3 questions and $30,000 life questions[06:20] What a “Rich Life Review” is (and why it replaces budgeting meetings)[07:30] The simple framework for a monthly money conversation with your partner[09:00] The four key financial numbers every couple should track[10:30] How focusing on big-picture goals transforms money conversations

Few things feel more lonely in a relationship than trying to reach someone who has gone quiet. They stop talking. They pull away. They look checked out.It all can feel like they don't care. But that's usually not what's happening. What's really happening beneath withdrawal, shutdown, and stonewalling affects both your nervous system and the relationship more than we realize. In this week's episode, How to Manage Shutting Down in Yourself or Your Partner, I walk you through how to begin shifting that pattern.Because when someone shuts down, what look like indifference…it's actually a coping strategy.A way of managing overwhelm, helplessness, criticism, or the fear of never being able to get it right. And if you're the one who tends to shut down, you are not broken either. You may simply have learned to disappear when emotions felt too confusing, too intense, or too dangerous to name.So I want to share some of my own past with this, what I've learned along the way, and the small but powerful shifts that can begin to change the dance.Episode timestamps:00:49 — What shutdown, withdrawal, and stonewalling really are01:10 — My own history with stonewalling03:43 — The attachment lens: why this behavior makes sense07:29 — The dismissive avoidant pattern and what's happening underneath12:15 — Why shutdown is actually a solution, not just a problem16:17 — If you're the one who shuts down: the most important pivot19:22 — If your partner shuts down: what helps most21:29 — Touch, acceptance, and other ways to interrupt the cycleIf this dynamic has been painful in your relationship, I hope this episode gives you a little more understanding, a little less shame, and a much clearer path forward.Oh—and if you have something you're navigating and would love my take on it...

The body talks. It may shout or whisper, but God created it to communicate its needs and your needs physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. How can you know if your body is speaking to you? You must have awareness and listen. Then you must pause to hear as the body speaks to you. God miraculously created you to have a sense of awareness and connection between mind, body, and spirit. It is your choice to listen and embrace the gifts given to you. The Miraculous Connection Between Body and Mind Our body is a remarkable creation, intricately designed to communicate with us. This relationship between the physical and the spiritual aspects is profound. Understanding how your body talks is key to health and wellness. For many, recognizing the nuances of this dialogue can be transformative. Recognizing Your Body's Signals Many of us have grown up in environments disconnected from bodily awareness. The Journey to Reconnection Some may go straight from complete disconnection to an obsessed awareness of the body. The Power of Chiropractic and Natural Health Chiropractic care offers a pathway to this reconnection. Strategies for Tuning Into Your Body Our bodies crave what they need. Sometimes, a lack of progress in healing or weight loss can mean the body has become resistant to current practices. Stewarding Our Physical Selves Like any valuable resource, our bodies require stewardship. The Role of Emotions and Spirituality Your body does not exist in isolation. Understanding the Whispering Signals The warnings our bodies give, such as sneezing or slight joint pain, often indicate underlying issues. Responding Rather Than Reacting In moments of stress or when facing health challenges, pausing rather than reacting can be powerful. Listening to Your Body: A Lifelong Practice Becoming attuned to your body is a journey, one that involves continuous learning and adjustment. Your Body, Your Partner in Well-being This journey is unique for each individual. Your body is a wise entity designed for resilience and healing. Thom's Nutshell Wisdom: “Practice conversations to convey rather than convince.” Healthy Conversation is “present-centered.” In a healthy conversation, we don't need to know exactly what we're trying to convey. With defenses down, we learn more. How much “we,” and how much “I” can we include in any relationship? How can we get on the same side of the problem? Anxiety is at the root of why we do this. We feel threatened so we feel a compulsion to manipulate someone into our point of view. The first step of dismantling this is awareness that its happening. Then we “befriend our experience,” which we derive from the work of Nathaniel Branden. Visit our website: www.emotionalsobriety.info Follow us on social media: Instagram: thomrutledge2 Joe C. Everything is impermanent. It's always changing, coming together and falling apart. This, of course, includes small daily things and massive, disruptive, and life-shattering things.  It's frustrating to not be able to control these movements and outcomes. But paradoxically, when we can accept that everything is not up to us, and we stop trying to control what we can't change or trying to predict what we can't predict, then we can feel a lot more at ease and more open to the moment-to-moment unfolding of our lives.  This week, Kimberly Brown shares a practice to loosen our grip and be at peace, even when the change isn't one we'd choose.  Kimberly Brown is a meditation teacher and author. In this episode, Kim Olver continues her conversation about couples by exploring the quiet ways we unintentionally hurt our relationships — and what we can do to repair and strengthen connection. Most relationships don't fall apart because of dramatic betrayals. They erode in subtle ways: defensiveness instead of empathy, withholding small acts of kindness, quiet scorekeeping, control disguised as concern, and unspoken unmet needs. Over time, these small moments create emotional distance — inch by inch.Drawing from decades of counseling experience and the principles behind Choice Theory, Kim unpacks:Why explaining can feel like dismissingHow small daily kindnesses protect intimacyThe hidden fear beneath controlHow keeping score damages emotional safetyWhy naming your needs builds connection instead of criticismIf you've ever thought, “We don't fight — we just feel distant,” this episode will help you understand why distance happens and how to close it.If you'd like to explore these ideas more deeply, Kim's book Secrets of Happy Couples: Loving Yourself, Your Partner, and Your Life is currently available while remaining copies last. Originally published in 2011, this edition reflects the language norms of its time. A thoughtfully revised edition is planned for the future. You can learn more or order a copy here.Because love rarely collapses from one catastrophic event — it fades through small, unaddressed moments. And it rebuilds the same way.

Dr. Maria Sophocles examines the “bedroom gap,” the disparity in sexual expectations and challenges between men and women in midlife. In this episode, she explains how menopausal hormonal changes, together with psychological and cultural pressures, affect women's sexual agency. Many women internalize norms that prioritize a partner's needs over their own, leading to shame about reduced libido. This conversation is a call to action for women to prioritize their sexual health and engage in honest dialogue to support healthier, more fulfilling relationships.Episode Overview (timestamps are approximate):(0:00) Intro/Teaser(5:00) The Bedroom Gap(10:00) Hormones & The Neiman Marcus to IKEA Transition(14:00) Systemic Estrogen vs. Vaginal & The Cancer Fear(23:00) Hormone Therapy & The Healthy User Bias(26:00) Non-Hormonal Options(32:00) Sex After a Heart Attack(40:00) Sex Span as Health Span(42:00) Why Women Think Sex Is For Men(49:00) Where to Learn About Sex(55:00) How to Talk to Your Partner(1:10:00) Redefining Sex at Any Age(1:13:00) After Party with Dr. StephanieResources mentioned can be found at https://drstephanieestima.com/podcasts/ep456We couldn't do it without our sponsors:KENETIK - You think carefully about how you fuel your body but are you fueling your brain? Some of the most misunderstood and emotionally charged topics for men are: attraction, compatibility, and what actually creates lasting connection with a woman. My guest, Laurin Ponce, helps us break down the difference between compatibility, connection, and chemistry - and why confusing those three is where most relationships go off the rails. We talk about what women truly find attractive in a grounded man, what it really means when a woman asks for space, why it feels like there are more rules for men, and how respect is built long before it's ever given. From attachment styles and masculine frame to why women's touch is medicine and how peace and respect create a relationship where both people feel safe and free, this conversation cracks open the unspoken dynamics most men are trying to navigate alone. We also explore the practical side: non-negotiables, testing for compatibility, shared values, money, day-to-day living, and why partners are often mirrors and triggers for our own unresolved work. Laurin and I get into anxious versus avoidant dynamics, masculinity and femininity in modern relationships, emotional expression in men, vulnerability, physical attraction, and how connection is built - and rebuilt - over time SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 00:00 - Understanding Men and Women 01:07 - Is There a Line in "Figuring Each Other Out"? 03:22 - Masculine and Feminine Polarity 05:08 - The Bowl and the Water Analogy 06:46 - Why Respect Starts With Self-Respect 08:21 - Non-Negotiables in Relationships 10:05 - Compatibility vs. Chemistry 13:18 - Core Values and Relationship Dealbreakers 14:58 - You Can't Out-Love Incompatibility 17:16 - Chemistry vs. Trauma Bonds 18:46 - What Real Chemistry Feels Like 19:29 - Peace and Respect in Relationships 22:47 - Creating Emotional Safety 26:52 - Masculine and Feminine Imbalance Today 30:30 - Polarity Always Finds Its Way 33:41 - Letting Go of Armor and Control 35:16 - Becoming the Partner You Want to Attract 39:13 - Consistency and Trust 40:10 - Physical Attraction and Discipline 43:02 - Connection Is Built Over Time 46:37 - Scarcity Mindset in Dating 48:02 - Where Men Should Start in Long-Term Relationships 50:32 - Rekindling Attraction and Intentionality 57:12 - "Cracking the Code" of Your Partner 01:00:29 - Never Get Comfortable in Love 01:05:05 - Serving Each Other Without Shame 01:06:23 - Where to Find Laurin's Work Battle Planners: Pick yours up today! In Part 2 of Why You Fell for Your Partner (and Why You Keep Fighting Them), Tony Overbay, LMFT, continues the story of Jack and Jill — a fictional couple built from hundreds of real couples he's worked with in therapy. But this time, the story shifts. What happens when children grow up with emotional safety, repair, and consistency? What does love look like when it's modeled, not managed — when connection feels safe instead of chaotic? Tony explores how secure attachment is formed through co-regulation, how parents teach emotional safety through presence instead of fixing, and how those lessons echo into adulthood — shaping how we love, argue, and connect. Through rich storytelling and neuroscience-backed insights, you'll learn: • What healthy co-regulation sounds like in real life • Why conflict in secure relationships feels safe, not scary • How consistent emotional repair rewires the brain • Why secure partners are drawn to emotional availability, not intensity • How “earned secure attachment” and therapy can break old patterns This episode isn't just a look at what healthy relationships sound like — it's a roadmap for how to build one. We all have the faith to move mountains. The problem is we neglect to believe it. To solve this problem affirm often, silently or aloud, “I have mountain-moving faith!” By simply reminding ourselves that we do indeed have mountain-moving faith stimulates it, and erases all thoughts of limitation from our mind. This opens our mind up to receive Divine intuition that inspires, guides, and motivates. “People whom the world considers to be of genius calibre are those who have had the courage and confidence to listen to, and follow the guidance of their intuition and creative imagination.“ They have faith enough to say “Yes!” to opportunities beyond their perceived ability and welcome the thrill of trusting God to go to work through them, in better than expected ways, at showtime. On this episode, Darrell and Ed share the power of trusting in our inherent mountain-moving faith makes the seemingly impossible possible. And, during the second segment, Special guest Sherry Hursey inspires us to utilize our mountain-moving faith with today's reading, “Take God for Your Partner”. When we hear the word “codependent,” we often picture someone clinging to toxic relationships or constantly rescuing others.  But the brilliant psychotherapist and boundary expert Terri Cole challenges this idea, revealing how capable, competent, and successful people can struggle with codependent patterns too,  just hidden under the mask of over-functioning and over-investing in people's lives.  Doing it all? That's the problem. In this episode, Terri shares how our deep desire for peace and control can drive us to do too much for others—emotionally, mentally, and physically— even at the cost of our own well-being. This conversation is a loving nudge to pause and ask:  “What am I doing for others that they could be doing for themselves?” We explore how stepping out of this “handle-it-all” mindset isn't just freeing—it's life-changing.  Tune in to this episode to learn to overcome high-functioning codependence and find ease, joy, fun, balance, and healthier relationships in your life!
