There is a long standing history of therapists making the mistake of pathologizing human behavior through the lens of their own religious bias. Maurice Harker, founder of Sons of Helaman: Eternal Warriors, is such an example. He has created programs and written books mostly focused on “sexual self-mastery” which align with his beliefs as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church). Braxton and Natasha discuss the ethical and problematic issues for the public to be aware of in this episode of the Natasha Helfer Podcast. Research shows repeatedly that folks from conservative and high demand religions are more vulnerable to these types of unethical services, and are more apt to internalize the shame of identifying as “diseased” for sexual practices or orientations that are considered normal and even healthy in the clinical sexological field. It does not escape us that therapists like this are also often in the public eye for much more egregious behavior, which is the current case with Maurice Harker who is being investigated for serious clinical abuses. Braxton Dutson, LCSW, CST graduated with his masters of Social Work degree and is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist in Salt Lake City Utah. He is the creator of Birds and Bees Podcast (iTunes and Stitcher), a popular sexual/relationship health podcast for couples and parents, and works for The Healing Group. He works with couples, individuals and teens largely in the intersection of sexuality and mental health. birdsandbeespodcast.com Intro ("Fisher's Hornpipe") and outro by Otter Creek Podcast edited by: Ashley Pacini

Natasha Helfer-Parker, MFT, CST, CSTS speaks with Braxton about being able to explore topics, address uncomfortable situations, and improve your understanding about “The M word.” Masturbation–There are a lot of euphemisms for the word that makes many people uncomfortable to talk about. Let’s face it, many parents are worried about what it means if their child masturbates. If you are a parent who wants to be able to support your child in building values around masturbation while also avoiding shaming them, then this episode is for you. Braxton and Natasha are here to help dispel myths, talk about values, talk about masturbation, and to support parents in creating a value-centric view on masturbation. This is especially supportive for those who live in religious communities and practice themselves. Many of us have grown up in a religious setting that explicitly or overtly teaches values about masturbation. It is difficult to be able to follow these values while also addressing the reality that the majority of children are participating in self-soothing/masturbation practices. In this Episode we explore: -The question “when does masturbation usually start?” -Speaking to values when addressing masturbation -Different approaches to conversations about masturbation with your child. -Avoiding shame when having these (multiple) conversations. -Creating “I Do’s” in what you value, VS following a “to Do” list. -Historical views of Masturbation and how they affect us now. -Identifying what we want for our children as a sexual being later in life. -Offering a value-centric view on Masturbation in religious communities while addressing the ways we can best support our children.

How to Talk to Your Kids About Porn With children being exposed to porn as early as 10 today, Braxton, teaches us how to deal with pornography and kids. He defines porn as content that is intentionally created for a sexual purpose like arousal. For many parents, the task may seem daunting and confusing to broach. In this episode, Braxton takes us by the hand and explains exactly what we need to do to raise healthy, aware and responsible children. His advice is to start by knowing your own parameters and values. The journey starts as early as the infant stage where we are encouraged to use the correct terms for body parts. With many kids having access to electronic devices, Braxton expresses how important it is to create a system for your child to respond correctly to unexpected, inappropriate material. He suggests explaining to your kids as young as 6, that if they do come across any naked people on their screens, to call you instead of getting curious and clicking on it. The C’s Talking to your child openly and ensuring that your child knows that they will not get into trouble, helps them approach you therefore Braxton encourages communication. Curiosity comes up as a common thread with children, and we are encouraged to teach them how to respond to that. Braxton explains the three C’s about why your child may look at pornography: – Clicking (accidental) – Curiosity – Coping As parents, he suggests we respond with these three C’s and explains these in more detail: – Stay Curious – Stay Connected – Stay Calm Teens Dealing with teens requires a specific approach, as many parents may already have discovered. We learn that approaching teens openly and explaining your rationale to them in line with your values as opposed to dictating to them, works best. While teens are in an exploratory phase, parents may encounter teens using porn for masturbation. Braxton gives us a helpful way to gently correct this while ensuring your teen can still explore their sexual impulses. Being responsible and not shaming your kids when they enter this phase of their lives is key to keeping an open line of communication and being there to help them into adulthood. What have you been told sex would feel like for the first time? How do I keep novelty in a committed long-term relationship? What kind of sex life do I want my child to have when they are adults? Earthly parents are the author of the book “And It was very good” one member of Earthly Parents joins me today to explore these questions and address many of the myths that people believe about sex. Hey everyone, This is Braxton Dutson welcome to Birds and Bees Podcast This interview is unique because we will be speaking to individuals who identify themselves with a more orthodox religious belief. While his book is directed toward the Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The discussion is relevant to anyone who is planning on being in a committed relationship while participating in religion. As for the last question, “What kind of sex life do I want my child to have when they are adults” We help parents explore this question for themselves as a tool to guide conversations with young adults as they look toward their future relationships. The authors have generously offered their book to The Birds and Bees Podcast listeners for free. All you need to do is email and ask for the book. They’ll email you a copy of the book. I personally have found the book to be a great tool for those who want to address sex in their relationship while being a part of an orthodox religious belief system. Especially if you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Natasha was recently a guest on Braxton Dutson’s “Birds and Bees Podcast.” Braxton is a LCSW and Certified Sex Therapist in Salt Lake City, Utah. He works at The Healing Group and can be found here: https://www.thehealinggroup.com/therapists/2018/4/20/braxton-dutson-lcsw-cst About the episode: Masturbation, There are a lot of euphemisms for the word that makes many people uncomfortable to talk about. Let's face it, many parents are worried about what it means if their child masturbates. If you are a parent who wants to be able to support your child in building values around masturbation while also avoiding shaming them then this episode is for you. Braxton and Natasha Heifer-Parker, MFT, CST are here to help dispel myths, talk about values, talk about masturbation, and to support parents in creating a value-centric view on masturbation. In this Episode we explore: The question "when does masturbation usually start?" Speaking to values when addressing masturbation Different approaches to conversations about masturbation with your child. Avoiding shame when having these (multiple) conversations. Creating "I Do's" in what you value, VS following a "to Do" list. Historical views of Masturbation and how they affect us now. Identifying what we want for our children as a sexual being later in life. Offering a value-centric view on Masturbation in religious communities while addressing the ways we can best support our children. Natasha Helfer-Parker, MFT, CST speaks with Braxton about being able to explore these topics, address uncomfortable situations, and improve your understanding about "The M word." Braxton worked on a collaborative podcast with Digital Adventure Crew. Their YouTube channel creates fun videos with crazy skits as well as interesting conversations on their podcast "digital adventure radio." They were interested in talking to Braxton about "The Talk" how he became a therapist and about the upcoming world record mustard drinking event that Braxton is putting on. This interview is interesting because they are interviewing Braxton about his start, how he got to be a therapist, how he knows the DAC, and why he is attempting to drink over 18 ounces of mustard in under 30 seconds for the world record. The coolest part of this episode is you can watch Braxton and the crew making this podcast if you search Digital Adventure radio on YouTube and look for the birds and bees podcast collaboration. You get to see all the reactions, and the interview! Head on over and check out the video of this recording. Let me know what you think of the collaborations and the "candid conversations" segments of Bird and Bees Podcast. I am excited to bring you more content like this in the future.
