So many people feel shame or like they are cheating. Are there hormones correlated with sexual fantasy? What are Americans Fantasizing about? Shame about fantasy – and who feels more ashamed. Our our fantasies actually truth and should we act on them? The difference between fantasy and desire. Just because you have a fantasy about a threesome – should you do it? Humans are poor predictors of future emotional states – Justin Lehmiller What do people mean when they talk about “getting the spark” back. And is there a role for fantasy. Sex quality versus quantity. In his book Dr. Lehmiller talks about self disclosure and building trust….but it can seem fraught with backfire potential. Should you share your fantasy with you partner? How do you know if it is safe? Novelty – seems so simple but people have the same sex week in and out. Research shows couples who engage in the most acts of novelty tend to be the most sexually satisfied and the most successful at keeping the passion alive. The most common fantasy and the one that doesn't work out well when done in real life – threesomes. What turns us on and why? Marc and Kristina examine this subject in a fun but thoughtful way. Do men and women fantasize about different kinds of things? They sure do. We explore this both through big data and also personal interviews. Trigger warning: Unsurprisingly, this episode deals frankly with sex acts and sexuality. For better or worse, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the sex life of many couples throughout the U.S., leaving either partners locked together indoors to revitalize their carnal knowledge or long-distance lovers to search for pleasure elsewhere. It seems that the upward trend of sex tech couldn’t have come at a better time. A 2019 report from Research and Markets predicted the $30 billion industry would balloon to $52.7 billion by 2026. With the pandemic tapping into people’s intimate loneliness, many sex toy shops are experiencing that peak in sales a little earlier than expected.   According to a 2020 consumer behavior report by e-commerce company Ella Paradis, over ¼ of individuals say their sex life has gotten worse since the pandemic and nearly 93% of those surveyed have used sex toys during the pandemic. New sex tech and intimate products are just beyond the horizon of affordability. Among the new innovations are a kissing device that transmits lip locks to a partner abroad, VR technology that allows for customization and sex dolls that heat up to human touch. But as with any innovation, there are some legal and ethical risks.  Today on AirTalk, we explore the future of the sex tech industry. Have you invested in sexual devices? How has the pandemic fared for your intimate relationships? Give us a call at (866) 893-5722.  Guest: Justin Lehmiller, social psychologist and research fellow at Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute; author of “Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life” (Hachette Go, July 2020); host of the “Sex and Psychology” podcast; he tweets @JustinLehmiller

He’s also a social psychologist and Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute who’s published more than 50 academic works on topics like casual sex, sexual fantasy, sexual health, and friends with benefits. “Sexuality is so much more complex than we think that it is,” Justin says. “There's more fluidity than people might realize or like to believe.”His popular book, “Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life,” is based on the largest and most comprehensive scientific survey of Americans' sexual fantasies ever undertaken.“People tend to think that their fantasies are weird, abnormal, strange, or unusual,” Justin says. “No matter what their fantasy was, my participants underestimated how common that fantasy was. The rarer they thought it was, the more shame, guilt, embarrassment, anxiety they felt, and that's really what holds people back. They're worried about what other people will say or think, and they don't accept themselves for the interest that they have.”Justin studied the sexual fantasies of 4,175 Americans who came from all 50 states. They ranged in age from 18 to 87, come from very diverse backgrounds and completed his 369-question survey. His work helps us better understand the incredible diversity of human sexual desire. “I think so much of it is, we have this lack of education about what's normal when it comes to sex,” he continues. “That leads to the shame and that leads people to bottle everything up. Before you can get to that point of actually sharing your fantasy with a partner, there's some work that we need to do on ourselves to get that level of self-acceptance that's going to open the door to having productive and healthy conversations.”And there are a couple of apps for sexual fantasies that could help, too. This episode might just change your life-- especially if you've ever wondered if your sexual fantasies are too “weird.” Dr. Justin Lehmiller surveyed over 4,000 Americans about their fantasies and what he discovered is absolutely fascinating and reassuring. It turns out all of our sexual fantasies fall into seven major categories. Dr. Lehmiller tells us which are the most popular and why, if people of different genders fantasize differently, why suppressing our sexual fantasies can be damaging, why group sex is so appealing, why Republicans tend to have more taboo sexual fantasies, and how to use the information he uncovered to make your own sex life better. He even tells us a few things from his study that didn't make it into his latest book, Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. ___________________________________ Submit your BDSM & sex advice questions by email to americansexpodcast@gmail.com To support American Sex podcast, please visit patreon.com/americansex (plus you’ll get all episodes early, secret episodes, bonus stories from guests, on-air shout-outs, stuff in the mail & more!)
