In this episode I host a dialogue between Stephen Snyder, meditation teacher and author, and Mark Mininberg, Zen master and dharma heir to Bernie Glassman. Stephen and Mark discuss their new podcast interview series, “Anatomy of Awakening”, in which they engage in peer-to-peer trialogue with other teachers of enlightenment. Stephen and Mark reveal why they chose the teachers they have featured, the degree to which various claims to spiritual attainment played a part in their selection, and how they navigated conversations with teachers from other Buddhist sects. Stephen and Mark reflect on the increase in meditation teachers who claim spiritual awakening, recall their own trainings in Zen communities in which discussion of enlightenment was taboo, and emphasise the need for rigorous training under an experienced guide. Stephen and Mark also warn about teachers who overestimate their abilities, offer suggestions to aspiring gurus, and emphasis the whole body commitment required to truly attain Buddhist awakening. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep308-anatomy-of-awakening-stephen-snyder-mark-mininberg Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:12 - Anatomy of Awakening 03:12 - How did Stephen and Mark decide which teachers to interview? 05:43 - Are these teachers enlightened? 06:13 - Enlightenment doesn't belong to anybody 07:36 - A synergy of awakening 08:21 - How can you even tell if someone is enlightened? 09:46 - Teachers who promote themselves as teaching awakening 10:16 - No teacher is flawless 10:56 - The danger of speaking openly about awakening 12:14 - Buddhism and awakening traditions are evolving in the West 14:54 - Why are more teachers claiming enlightenment? 16:29 - Changes in American Buddhism and the New Age since the 70s 18:15 - The lost virtue of humility 19:50 The Absolute awakens to Itself 20:49 - Going public with ones's awakening 22:59 - Holding this life in reverence 24:05 - Signs of a mature practice 26:02 - Becoming a meditation teacher 28:11 - The true job of a teacher 30:47 - Teachers should not overestimate their level 34:35 - Ways to know you are in too deep as a teacher 35:45 - Teachers need teachers 37:50 - Is there any substitute for a 1-1 relationship with a teacher 39:54 - Humility and the truth a spouse sees 41:04 - People assume their teacher is perfect 41:47 - Mark's conservative Zen training 43:00 - Customer services spirituality 45:08 - Holding a teacher in reverence 47:13 - The pitfalls of leadership by committee 49:51 - Awakening is a whole body commitment 54:29 - Surprises when meeting enlightenment teachers 57:20 - Peer to peer trialogues 58:12 - How to find the interview series 59:24 - Host and guest 01:00:14 - Praise for the Guru Viking Podcast … Previous episodes with Stephen Snyder: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=snyder To purchase Anatomy of Awakening visit: - https://awakeningdharma.org/anatomy-of-awakening/ GV Podcast receives no affiliate commission from your purchase. … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com … Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Stephen warns about the dangers of achieving enlightenment without dealing with one's personality patterns and trauma, reflects on the inner experience of enlightened Zen masters who behaved badly, and gives his advice for teachers and practitioners who think they no longer need to practice. Stephen also reports a high success rate of awakening and other mystical experiences among his students, shares his approach to retreats and 1-1 teaching, and describes advanced Theravada meditation techniques such as kasina and skeleton meditation. … Video versions: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep298-liberating-the-self-stephen-snyder Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:03 - High rate of awakening at Stephen's retreat 03:05 - What is the secret sauce? 04:40 - Limitations of the Zen retreat style 06:17 - Stephen's experimental approach and heart emphasis 07:14 - Minimum requirement to qualify for Stephen's retreats 08:58 - Why the Theravadans struggle the most 10:00 - Stephen's online trainings 12:09 - The art of 1-1 meditation teaching 13:08 - Seeking confirmation for spiritual experiences 13:53 - Stream of consciousness sharing 14:58 - Stephen's new podcast 16:44 - Liberating the Self and Stephen's writing output 18:20 - Zen ignores personal and psychological work 19:52 - Theravadan shamata and no-self practices 20:42 - Reifying awakening and reassertion of the sense of self 23:22- Bad behaviour by enlightened people 25:35 - Work on your incongruent behaviour before or after awakening? 27:34 - Post-awakening work vs therapy 29:08 - We all have a full range of negative emotions and personality patterns 31:10 - Stephen's childhood hatred 31:46 - Transforming negative emotions 32:07 - Misbehaving Zen masters 33:21 - What is the inner experience of a misbehaving Zen master? 34:5 0 - The benefit of Western depth psychology 36:04 - Is Stephen done? 37:51 - Advice for advanced meditators and teachers who think they're done 41:07 - Stuck in a good place and shifting to concepts 41:08 - Recognising when you have gone off track 42:55 - Contentment vs complacency 43:36 - Challenging emotions and outdated personality patterns 44:12 - Resistance to peace 47:44 - Destabilising effect of spiritual practice 49:41 - Why bother with the deep path? 52:05 - Unlocking profound spiritual qualities 54:34 - Awakening stories 55:04 - The traditional kasina meditation path 58:42 - Skeleton practice and skeleton visions … Previous episode with Stephen Snyder: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=Stephen%20Snyder To find our more about Stephen Snyder, visit: - https://awakeningdharma.org/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com … Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James
Host Michael Taft speaks with Stephen Snyder Sensei about practicing the Pa Auk jhanas, the importance of vulnerability in finding authentic strength, his two paths for awakening: the Theravada cessation path and the Zen shikantaza path, how to balance psychological work with awakening, seeing the enlightened qualities of anger (and other difficult emotions), what are “protective” meditations, the three levels of shikantaza practice, koan practice, aloneness as a spiritual path, and the three factors he feels must be present for a true awakening.Stephen Mugen Snyder, Sensei began practicing daily meditation in 1976. Modern psychology has a very complicated relationship with gender. Gender differences have become one of the most contentious areas in the field, and it seems like psychology isn’t entirely sure what to do with men anymore. This is especially true for heterosexual men, who are often viewed through a pathological lens. So in today's show, we're going to dive into some controversy. Some of the topics we’ll discuss include why men are often blamed for their own sexual problems, why it's important to acknowledge gender differences in communication styles, and more. I am joined once again by Dr. Stephen Snyder, an AASECT certified sex therapist, relationship therapist, and sexual medicine specialist. Dr. Snyder is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and author of the book LOVE WORTH MAKING: How to Have Ridiculously Great Sex in a Long-Lasting Relationship. Some of the questions we address include: How have the dynamics of heterosexual relationships changed over time? Why does the field of sex therapy have such a complicated relationship with men and male sexuality? What are some of the key differences in sexual psychology that are important for people to understand? You can learn more about Stephen and his work on his website here. Got a sex question? A lot of sex advice boils down to one popular idea: that good sex is simply a matter of combining the right physical sensations with the right kind of mental activity. In other words, great sex is just friction plus fantasy. However, it's more complicated than that. To have really great sex, we need to start by understanding the true nature of the sexual self. In today’s show, we're going to explore a new way of thinking about sex, as well as discuss what you really need to know when it comes to having sex that's truly worth having. My guest is Dr. Stephen Snyder, and AASECT certified sex therapist, relationship therapist, and sexual medicine specialist. Dr. Snyder is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and author of the book LOVE WORTH MAKING: How to Have Ridiculously Great Sex in a Long-Lasting Relationship. Some of the questions we address in this episode include: What’s the problem with the “friction plus fantasy” narrative? How can understanding the sexual self as “infantile” help us find inspiration in long-term sexual relationships? What is “simmering,” and what’s the benefit of learning how to do it? Why might it be bad to view sex as work? How can you develop sexual connections that last over time? You can learn more about Dr. Snyder and his work on his website. Got a sex question? In this episode I am once again joined by Stephen Snyder, Buddhist meditation teacher and author of several books including ‘Buddha's Heart', ‘Trust in Awakening', and his up-coming release ‘Soothing the Longing Heart'. Stephen talks about the importance of working with one's personality material especially after awakening. He points to an idealisation of the Buddha and other blindspots in Buddhism that he believes have led to the various behavioural scandals that have surrounded so many famous Zen masters. Stephen discusses how to work with fear and anger, how to heal one's core wound, how to convert the superego into Absolute guidance, and reflects on the pros and cons of American culture's interaction with the Buddhist religion. Stephen also reflects on how he approaches leading meditation retreats, why he does not enforce strict Zen schedules, the deleterious effect of electronics on concentration power, and the subtle power of taking a dharma name. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep242-soothing-the-longing-heart-stephen-snyder Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:07 - Stephen teaching in-person retreats in 2024 in Europe and the US 03:53 - Relaxed vs rigorous retreat approaches 06:10 - Treating students like adults 08:23 - Why Stephen cooks for his retreats 10:00 - Reworking the precepts 11:40 - The damaging effect of electronics on concentration power 13:03 - Stephen's interview schedule on retreat 13:37 - Receiving full Zen dharma transmission to be recognised as a sensei 17:00 - Combing Zen with Theravada practice 18:10 - Post-awakening problems with personality issues 19:06 - Examples of post-awakening triggered behaviour and the core wound 23:08 - Working with anger and fear 27:42 - Quickly resolving karma 29:09 - Do meditation peak experiences heal the personality? 29:30 - Blindspots and scandals in Zen Buddhism 31:41 - Going beyond cultural bias 33:52 - How much cultural transfer is necessary in Buddhist practice? 35:36 - Stephen's experimental teaching approach 38:00 - America's contribution to Buddhism 40:57 - British class system 42:23 - Indian caste system 43:53 - How Buddhism assimilates indigenous cultural and religious forms 45:28 - Gregorian style Zen chanting 46:50 - The importance of your dharma name 47:49 - Working vs wallowing in emotional material 52:16 - What is your core wound? 54:52 -The personality as a shield 56:44 - The tyranny of the superego 01:00:39 - Transforming the superego into Absolute guidance 01:02:07 - True vs false 01:04:32 - Common compassion misunderstanding 01:06:12 Parenting mistakes around compassion 01:08:08 - Should we tell stories of awakening? 01:09:47 - The importance of doubt and trust 01:11:59 - Stephen's advice to practitioners … Previous episode with Stephen Snyder: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=Stephen%20Snyder To find our more about Stephen Snyder, visit: - https://awakeningdharma.org/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com … Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

In this episode I am once again joined by Stephen Snyder, meditation teacher, author, and the first non-monastic Western man to master the virtuoso-level shamata meditation system of Pa Auk Sayadaw. In this interview we discuss Stephen's latest book ‘Demysifying Awakening: A Buddhist Path of Realization, Embodiment, and Freedom'. Stephen gives detailed comparisons between the maps of Theravadan and Zen Buddhism, explains the difference between Kensho and Satori, and reveals why it is so easy to stall after an initial awakening experience. Stephen also shares techniques to open the Wisdom Eye, loosen allegiance to the body, and transcend the superego; and reveals how he assesses others spiritual experiences and how an individual can self-assess their own level of awakening. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep141-demystifying-awakening-stephen-snyder Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 00:51 - Why is Stephen writing so many books? 05:42 - What is the probability of awakening? 08:46 - Kensho vs Satori probabilities 11:06 - Languishing between Kensho and Satori 13:57 - Self-administered tests of awakening 15:37 - How Stephen assesses his students' awakenings 17:39 - Opening the Wisdom Eye 20:27 - Energetic resonance of awakening 21:31 - Facsimiles of awakening 23:53 - Confusion around awakening 30:09 - Rebirth, reincarnation, and tulkus 33:00 - Superego and trauma 39:43 - Purifying the body via the four elements 45:44 - Stephen's experience of the crystal body 48:06 - Loosening allegiance to the body 49:37 - Resistances to jhana and awakening 54:05 - Steve's practice challenge 58:16 - How to work with intensity and blocks 01:02:09 - The will to live 01:05:17 - Boat meditation 01:06:15 - Comparing the maps of Theravada and Zen 01:13:29 - Fear of No-Self 01:16:32 - Integrating the No-Self 01:19:31 - Koan practice 01:23:16 - Flavours of enlightenment 01:27:24 - Keeping a spiritual journal … Check out my previous interviews with Stephen: - https://www.guruviking.com/ep24-stephen-snyder-a-stroke-of-realisation-guru-viking-interviews/ - https://www.guruviking.com/ep33-stephen-snyder-pandemic-edition-guru-viking-podcast/ - https://www.guruviking.com/ep70-stephen-snyder-buddhas-heart/ Purchase ‘Demystifying Awakening': - https://awakeningdharma.org/book/demystifying-awakening/ To find out more about Stephen Snyder, visit: - https://awakeningdharma.org/ For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com/ Music 'Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Can sex survive monogamy? This is a question Manhattan sex therapist Dr. Stephen Snyder explores in his book Love Worth Making: How to Have Ridiculously Great Sex in a Long-Lasting Relationship. He looks at how there's no shortage of books these days on sex technique, but that's not what most people are interested in. What they really want is to have great sex in a committed relationship, in which case all the technical expertise in the world won't help you very much. For that, you need to understand sexual feelings - how they operate, what rules they follow, and how they connect to the rest of who you are. Dr. Stephen Snyder's unique approach has helped over 1,500 individuals and couples master the erotic challenges of long-term relationships. Integrating the latest research on human sexuality with compelling stories from his 30 years of experience working with over 1,500 individuals and couples, Love Worth Making will help people of all ages and backgrounds master the erotic challenges of long-term relationships, understand their sexual feelings, and enjoy them for life. In this episode we talk about: What happens to a couple’s sex life when a baby arrives. How most books on sex subscribe to the idea that sex is just “friction plus fantasy”, but that’s not the kind of sex most of us are looking for. The “sexual self”. How couples spend too much time thinking about technique, which leads to a lot of very boring sex because there’s no passion in it. How to solve erotic boredom. Mindfulness practices before sex. The impact of digital devices and social media on our sex life. The most common mistakes men and women make in the bedroom. Social Media is making sex obsolete. Dr. Stephen Snyder shares a shocking statistic that reveals the drop in the sexual interaction between people. He unpacks his very interesting theory on why this is. In this episode, you will hear about why people have sex and the influence of social media and technology on their motivation to engage sexually. He talks about ‘Healthy Narcissism” as children and its return during sex, both of which he describes as normal. Listen in to hear him connect the dots between what social media offers and celebrity narcissism- “What we used to get from sex, we now get it from lots of places.” When describing how we interact with devices, he refers to an Infantile Narcissistic State that wants everything but gives nothing. How long should sex last? Listen in to find out what Dr. Snyder considers the appropriate length for sexual engagement. He touches on porn and its influence on what people perceive as perfect. Again, technology affects what we come to expect. Sex: Technique versus Feelings Dr. Snyder compares the variety of advice available to couples about technique and technical know-how as opposed to psychological signs. He shares the signs of arousal (this is not actually what you think it is!!). This candid list is something you won't want to miss out on as it brings much clarity to what we experience. Dr. Snyder unwraps the effect of sex on your mental faculties, returning to an infantile state and validation. Tune in to hear his advice for experiencing the most out of arousal to validate and connect us in relationships. How does good communication ruin great sex? We move on to even more unusual beliefs with Dr. Snyder. Join in to hear his shocking view on what communication can do to your relationship and encounter his playful analogies around this. He shares his experiences about couples he consults and makes sense of why he believes communication curbs the passion in relationships. Is it ok to be Selfish? Join in to find out about the role selfishness plays in relationships and sex. We cover orgasms and who is responsible for them despite what is commonly believed. Dr. Snyder draws parallels between childlike selfishness and its connection with sex. Very interesting to hear! But I'm not in the mood Dr. Snyder covers a method called the Two- Step. He discusses the secret of this method as the ‘experiencing mode.' While every couple does things a little differently together, Dr. Snyder says it should move naturally to the second step. We share a playground analogy that opens up our views about what is expected and not expected for connecting with your partner. Men and women experience things differently. In this episode, Dr. Snyder visits the evolution of men's understanding of women. He shares his insights on how men have lost their primal instincts in an attempt to better understand women and what the impact of this is in relationships today. He shares his advice on embracing your desires. When Dr. Snyder assesses women today, he focuses on women not understanding that men want happy partners. He presents men's fears about having unhappy partners and the fear of disappointment. In his assessment, he draws on the male experience with a mother and the themes carried from that into adult relationships. About our guest Stephen Snyder, M.D. is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine and an AASECT-certified sex therapist in full-time private practice in New York City. Guest: Dr. Stephen Snyder, sex, and relationship expert and authorHost: Sara-Jayne King, Late NightsTopic: The Fringe: What is a paraphiliaSara-Jayne King speaks to sex and relationship therapist Dr. Stephen Synder, author of Love Worth Making about Paraphilia which is an unusual arousal pattern. It was once thought to be disorders but then it turned out that they’re not that unusual(e.g liking to be spanked- 50 shades of Grey etc). In the sex and relationship environment, it is seen as normal variations today. The term "paraphilic disorders" is reserved for a paraphilia that causes lots of distress or could conceivably cause someone psychological harm -- like pedophilia, or exhibitionism.
