Can religion ruin your sex life? This week on A Little Bit Culty, Sarah and Nippy are joined by psychotherapists and certified sex therapists Jeremiah Gibson and Julia Pastima—co-hosts of the podcast Sexvangelicals: The Sex Education the Church Didn't Want You to Have. Together, they explore how religion, especially purity culture and fundamentalist gender roles, can cause lasting damage to relationships and sexual well-being. From internalized shame to rigid scripts about gender and sex, Jeremiah and Julia explain how high-control religious environments affect intimacy long after someone leaves the faith. They also discuss the complexities of deconstructing religion as a couple, the importance of finding shared values, and why therapy can be a vital lifeline through it all. If you're trying to untangle your beliefs from your bedroom, this conversation offers both validation and guidance. This one's extra spicy, so listener discretion is advised. This week Ang is joined by the wonderful Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers. A licensed sex and gender feminist physiotherapist, author, researcher and professor whose expertise covers sex therapy, spiritual intimacy, parenting and social justice. In this expansive interview with Ang, Tina shares her valuable insights on the importance of creating strong bonds with your children. Sometimes that will be through difficult conversations and sometimes through your actions. However, being open and honest, as Tina explains, is a pathway to a wonderfully rewarding parent and child relationship. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tina has a wealth of experience and her services cover a broad range of subjects. But she didn’t just arrive there overnight. She explains to Ang how her early career as a therapist brought up more questions than answers and how that set her on a quest for knowledge. One of the big areas Tina tackles in her work is sex therapy. She explains to Ang how our attitudes about sex are developed from a very early age, and without knowing, embed behaviours in us so deeply we don’t even know they exist. Forming a bond of trust with your child is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Ang and Tina discuss their individual experiences of having difficult conversations with their children and how this led to a stronger relationship with them in the long term. As Ang has highlighted many times in the past, being a single parent is one of the hardest jobs you can have. Drawing on her wealth of knowledge and years of experience, Tina gives her advice on how to approach this role. BEST MOMENTS “You don’t need to figure everything out, you just need to be two years ahead of your kids.” “Be brave enough to look at your past and then you can begin to heal your present.” “When you open up to your children you are communicating with them that you are brave enough to talk about hard subjects with them.” GUEST LINKS @DrTinaShameless Facebook TinaSSellers drtinaschermesellers www.TinaSchermerSellers.com EPISODE LINKS Use the link below to sign up to the TalkingParents App. 30 Day FREE trial available alongside a completely FREE option too! https://talkingparents.com/dirhm If you enjoy this podcast here is the link to the book 'Do I Really H*te Men?'. “Sexual shame causes profound wounding in people's lives, because it hurts in their ability to do attachment, to give love, and to receive love. They don't believe they are fundamentally worthy of love, and so they put up a mask. So if somebody loves them, they think that they couldn't possibly love me if they knew who I was. So that love doesn't get in.And then, the loving coming out is behind this mask, like, I'm going to do what I think you want me to do.It affects our ability to do attachment. And as a human one of my core desires is to be seen. known, loved, and accepted. And this interrupts that, at every level.”Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers is a licensed sex and gender feminist psychotherapist, best-selling author, researcher, emeriti professor, and media personality whose expertise spans sex therapy, spiritual intimacy, parenting, medicine, and social justice. In time, Tina became "the fixer" in the household. The fights and yelling was too much for Tina and she also took on the role of being her younger sister's protector.  She felt that she needed to calm everyone down most importantly for herself to feel safe.Feeling abandoned and neglected early on in her life, my guest's mother, was a highly sensitive child and she didn't get as much attention as she needed as a child.  The family deemed her "the neurotic child."  It seemed as though the only thing that Leilani's family seemed to valued was her beauty. Leilani became a swimsuit model as a young teen and was basically on her own.  This took place between, 1953-54 and she experienced many advances from men as one would imagine and a reminder that this was way before the "Me Too" movement.Tina had to put up some of her own boundaries between she, her sister and her mom. The triggers of infighting in the family  was not where Tina wanted to keep her heart.Later on in life, as Leilani was starting to suffer from  dementia, Tina was able to spend three weeks with her mother, visiting her and helping take care of her. Tina says their common love that they so embraced when Tina was a baby, was so present during those visits. None of the terrible threatening or fearful tendencies showed their face and Tina is so grateful for that special time to rekindle their relationship as though nothing had ever gotten between them.Tina made reference to a poem by Dorothy Lae Nolte in our conversation. Please find it below. It's still stands strong today regarding principles we try and teach our children and the principles that we hope many children never have to experience.  Children Learn What They LiveBy Dorothy Law NolteIf children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient. If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.  If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and others. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.WEBSITE:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q-Srqq8RpH9U2e3vQAsyU5FPChjrnD24/viewIG:@DrTinaShamelessFB:facebook.com/TinaSSellersTWITTER:@TinaSSellersLINKEDIN:/drtinaschermesellers "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Sex education rests in the hands of the media and serves the objectives of capitalism - sounds healthy and pleasurable, right? So not sexy. To undo this, let's go back to school on the subject of childhood development. Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers is chatting with the podcast hosts once again, revisiting and diving deeper into the implications of abstinence only sex education and purity culture, and how we can make the future happier and healthier for the next generation by liberating ourselves from sexual shame. Dr. Tina gives a breakdown of the capacity for understanding verbal and non verbal cues about sexuality throughout the developmental stages of childhood, and the impact those cues have to our brains, bodies, and relationships. The hosts have questions about the significance of the language we use to name body parts, the link between purity culture and violence against women, and like, wtf is the madonna/whore complex? Finally, Dr. Tina shares her latest work with psychedelic assisted therapy and some inspiration for what that therapeutic approach can offer to those of us wanting to liberate ourselves perhaps a little more efficiently! This is a great follow up to the podcast's first conversation with Dr. Tina back in December 2022. We often believe that shaming messages don't affect us, but from my experience, the effects of shamed-based culture or upbringing can be exceedingly harmful. Whether shaming messages are implicit or explicit, they can result in the internalization of negative self-messages that lead to feelings of unworthiness, chronic guilt, depression, and anxiety. When left unaddressed, feelings of shame can erode self-esteem, hamper healthy sexuality, and lead to addiction. True freedom comes when we learn how to release the immense burden of silent inner shame. Join Dr. Carla and shame expert Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers for a surprising and fascinating exploration into the roots of shame-based behaviors and how to set yourself free from the toxic grip of shame. From attachment issues and addiction to sexuality, this episode touches on sensitive key topics! In this episode, Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers, a licensed psychotherapist, best-selling author, and researcher shares her insight on shameless parenting and our ability to heal while we learn alongside our kids. Dr. Tina and I dig into how sexual shame impacts our ability to form secure attachments and relationships. She shares her experience as a professor and noticing the shift as the first wave of "purity culture" took on a different narrative that was harmful to the students she was teaching. One of my favorite books, Sex, God, and the Conservative Church: Erasing Shame from Sexual Intimacy was powerful in helping me understand how and why shame is rampant in our culture, but often hard to notice.  And she has recently another book called, Shameless Parenting: How to Raise Confident, Shame free Kids and Heal Your Own Shame Too!Dr. Sellers emphasizes the role of parents in fostering shame-free environments for their children, regardless of their family makeup. She encourages open conversations with teenagers, addressing myths and stereotypes about sex, and prioritizing connection and pleasure over obligation in relationships. Dr. Sellers emphasizes the importance of ongoing learning, dispelling myths, and staying on the path of personal growth to lead a fulfilling life.Follow Dr. Sellers on Instagram at @DrTinaShamelessIn this episode:0:02:28 Dr. Tina Shermer Sellers bio 0:08:45 Healing Through Shameless Parenting0:27:26 Importance of Social and Emotional Learning0:32:51 Parenting Insights Beyond Traditional Family Structures0:39:39 Embodying Sexuality for a Fulfilling Life0:42:13 Connect with Dr. Tina on Instagram0:42:37 Dr. Tina's Podcast EpisodesAlthough this will be my last episode, please stay in touch! Her latest book is Shameless Parenting – Everything You Need to Raise Shame-free, Confident, Kids and Heal Your Shame Too!It's almost impossible to separate shame from sex especially if you were brought up in a religious household that preached abstinence until marriage. Or if your sex education suggested that sex was bad and that good girls shouldn't enjoy it. So it should come as no surprise that in later life, many women especially choose to stop doing it because if it wasn't pleasurable in the first place, why continue? What becomes clear during our conversation is that it's never too late to have pleasurable sex and to help our children grow up to have healthy intimate relationships and ‘heal through the paralysing prison of shame.'Instagram: @DrTinaShamelessFacebook: facebook.com/TinaSSellersLinkedIn: drtinaschermesellersFor booking go to: www.tinaschermersellers.com/contactSex Advice for Seniors is a reader-supported publication. Raising kids is hard in a bunch of different ways, but one of the main things parents dread is having the inevitable “talk” with their children. How do you have the talk, when should you have it, what is appropriate to say: these are all questions that nobody really gives parents the answers to. But what if that one, all-important moment never needed to happen, because kids got the information they needed as they needed it growing up?Author of the incredible resource Shameless Parenting: Everything You Need to Raise Shame-free, Confident Kids and Heal, Dr Tina Schermer Sellers, joins us this week to discuss how to raise kids in a shame-free way, including “drip-feeding” them snippets of information about sex and their bodies throughout life, starting from toddler-age. We start the episode hearing about Tina's own upbringing, which was exactly the kind of parenting she has found is beneficial to kids in her research. Tina explains what sex-positive and shame-free parenting means and what parents need to do to make sure they're not passing on their own shame to their kids.Dr Tina gets into the different developmental stages kids go through with understanding sex, and what is age appropriate to teach them at each stage, including what to do if your kid is touching themselves or trying to experiment with other children. You might experience conflict in your own relationships, so she also goes into what is appropriate to share with your kids and what to do if they ask you questions. We then get into how to talk about bodies in positive ways; Dr Tina explains that not having these crucial conversations with your children can set them up for loneliness and feeling as though they are unequipped for the world later on in life, which can in turn make them look to harmful examples in the world around them. Thank you so much to Dr Tina for joining us, we learnt so much about how to raise sex-positive children and we hope you did too. I sat down with Dr. Tina Sellers about the unfortunate legacy Christianity has with Sexual Shame. With both of us having backgrounds in faith traditions, I believe we share a distress that certain religious communities can't seem to find more sex-positive and effective approaches to such an important part of the human experience. We discussed the history and ramifications of sexual shame and some approaches people may find helpful in reframing these things in their lives.  Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers is a licensed sex and gender feminist psychotherapist, best-selling author, researcher, emeriti professor, and media personality whose expertise spans sex therapy, spiritual intimacy, parenting, medicine, and social justice. Her revolutionary perspectives have been expressed on platforms such as “Spirituality & Health,” “Refinery 29,” “Vocal,” “Medium,” and “Bust Magazines,” along with many podcast, radio, news, and TV outlets. Known for exposing the impact of patriarchy and sexual shame on our ability to securely attach to our partners, and instruct our children to attach to theirs, Dr. Sellers' book, “Sex, God, & the Conservative Church – Erasing Shame from Sexual Intimacy,” has had a global impact. Her latest book, “Shameless Parenting – Everything You Need to Raise Shame-free, Confident, Kids and Heal Your Shame Too!” was a New Release Bestseller in eight categories. She speaks throughout the world on how to heal, and how to raise shame-free relationally confident children. In 2015, Dr. Sellers left her academic position of 28 years to found the Northwest Institute on Intimacy, a post-graduate institute to train psychotherapists, educators, clergy, and physicians in sexual health and understanding their sexual biases. Most do not realize that these professionals do not get sexual health training in graduate school. Since our ability to do pleasure and connection is core to our happiness, it is critical that all professionals serving public health and wellness receive this training.  Dr. Tina can be followed on Instagram @DrTinaShameless.   Please consider donating to keep this podcast going at natashahelfer.com. Carla Godwin grew up in Nebraska in a conservative Christian household. She settled on Grace Bible College in Omaha knowing there were limited career options for women in that world. While being constantly reminded of the expectations for women, Carla began pushing back against some interpretations of the Bible. But patriarchy and purity culture kept forcing her to question even more of her faith, leading her to join more progressive churches and organizations. Even still, purity culture was ingrained into the heads of the men, highlighting the rift between men and women in christian settings. I was fortunate enough to meet Carla a the Deconstruction Meetup in Portland, and I am so grateful to call her a friend today. Her story and her perspective are so important for everyone to hear. We mentioned Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers and Pastor Josh Scott as excellent resources for christians regarding sexuality and a progressive worldview. I think they are also just great resources for everyone. Many parents find normal sex behavior and development confusing. Parents often wonder if their child's sexual behavior is normal. Certified sex therapist Dr. Tina Sellers talks about parenting and sexual health and give parents a better understanding of “what to expect and when” in terms of their child's sexual development. Resources for Shameless parenting In her newest book, Dr. Tina's goal is to help parents or caregivers foster healthy sexual choices and attitudes in their children. She believes comprehensive sex education is the best way to protect children when they get involved with sex later, to make safe sexual choices, to lower teen pregnancy rate, to lower STI rates, etc. The book was made to be a handout that doctors, teachers, parents, therapists, and other educators could easily use and refer to when dealing with sexual developments in young children. Moreover, since shame is one of the things that could get in the way for parents to become the best sex educator that they wanted to be, Dr. Tina also emphasizes ways to soothe the self and heal from that, along with streamlined resources and websites that could effectively help overcome that shame. Sexual Development in children It is critical for parents and caregivers to get a greater understanding around sexual development and behaviors in children. Dr. Tina's book was developed in hopes of creating a better understanding of these developments. It can be difficult to recognize that, like adults, children are sexual beings. Children will be curious about sex, sexuality, and the human body. The book can serve as cheat sheets for parents to get some general information on common and uncommon behaviors based on age groups. Parents can also find suggestions for conversations that parents can have with their children to help encourage healthy sexual development. Normalizing sexual behaviors Healing comes from knowing that there are sexual behaviors that are normal in children and that shame was never an appropriate feeling. Kids will do what kids will do from harmless curiosity. The evolving sexuality that we have is always beautiful and creative, and the fact that the society that we live in has just never gotten it right is tragic. Wrong notions and misinformation can crush a child's developing sexuality and can get traumatized with profound effects. Managing reactivity for parents It is important to ask your kids questions and listen very carefully to what they have to say about what's going on in their world. It can be scary for parents to get sort of a bird's eye view of what the world is like for their kids but not knowing will not be helpful either. Parents need to learn to manage reactivity within themselves. Joining a parents' group where you can start talking to each other about what it is like for you or just having a place to talk through your own reactivity and your own fear can be helpful. Know that your kids need your calm presence and just knowing that you got their back no matter what. Parents need to be conscious of their reactions because kids could easily pick it up as shaming or judging.
