Today, friends, we're talking about one of my favorite marriage coaching concepts: emotional leadership, and why going first in your marriage matters more than you might think. We all want deeper connection, warmth, and understanding in our relationships, but so often we find ourselves waiting… Waiting for our partner to initiate, to change, to get it. But what if the key to transforming your marriage isn't waiting, but leading? We're diving into the idea of emotional leadership: what it means to take the lead in creating the kind of marriage you want without feeling like you're doing ALL the work. We'll explore how your emotional state influences your partner's response, why small shifts in how you show up can create a ripple effect in your relationship, and how a cool thing called systems theory explains why changing even one part of a relationship changes the whole. I'm breaking down how showing up as the partner you want to be (before expecting your partner to do the same) can help you create shifts you never imagined. This isn't about “doing more work” or carrying an unfair emotional load. It's about going first and then growing together. It's about taking ownership of your experience, leading with love, and watching what happens. Listen in to the episode for all this, PLUS: Four key ways to practice emotional leadership One of my favorite tools - emotional safety drills - and how to use it This episode is packed with insights you can apply immediately. If you're tired of waiting for things to change and want a fresh perspective on how to create the marriage you desire, this one's for you! Every coach knows how important mindset is for cultivating change–but great coaches have the ability to expand beyond thought work. So what truly sets highly skilled coaches apart? An integrative approach that combines mindset, emotions, and the nervous system into an integrative approach that meets clients where they are. Many coaches start with thought work because it's powerful and effective. But on its own, it has limits. When clients struggle to change their thoughts, it's often because deeper emotional or nervous system patterns need attention first. In this conversation with Crystal Hansen, you'll hear how developing the skills to have this holistic approach not only improves client results—it strengthens your business by making you a more adaptable coach. After you listen to the episode, don't forget to sign up for my FREE live webinar on March 10th at noon CT! We'll go even deeper into mindset and developing a holistic perspective. The power and limits of mindset workMindset work has so many benefits–it's often the quickest path for your clients to gain awareness, take ownership, and recognize areas where a shift is needed. When your client has the understanding that they can change their mindset, they realize the control they have over their life and circumstances. This power can feel so good! But thought work is not the answer to everything–it's important to be aware of the issues this can bring up as well. If clients believe every problem can be solved by changing their thoughts, they may start blaming themselves when it doesn't work. The truth is that not every thought is controllable. The nervous system plays a major role in how we respond to situations, often outside of conscious awareness. And when a deeper emotion is influencing our thoughts, that's something we need to process–not “fix” or change. It's essential to learn how to recognize when emotional processing should take priority. Highly skilled coaches who understand both can guide clients toward meaningful, lasting change.A holistic approach sets great coaches–and their businesses–apart from the restSkilled coaches need this broader understanding of the tools they can use to truly do their service justice. None of these strategies–mindset, emotional processing, or nervous system work–are better than another. What works for one client may not work for another. Lasting change comes from knowing how to combine them to serve each individual client. A holistic approach will allow you to personalize the work you do to help them move forward in their lives–this is what will set you apart as a great coach, and help your business continue to grow. If you want to explore the topic of going beyond thought work further, sign up for my live interactive webinar on March 10th. I love Viktor Frankl's quote “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” I am reminded by this that my power, my strength, and my freedom is created in the space between the stimulus (circumstance) and my response (my actions). But sometimes that space can seem so, so, so small. We can tend to react impulsively, without thought, rather than responding thoughtfully. How do we increase the space, so we respond with intention, with valued alignment, rather than reacting with without thought? This podcast talks about how. Thanks for listening! Today's episode is so epic. Do you remember growing up wanting to be the best at something? Then actually becoming the best at that thing and then being surrounded by people you absolutely loved because they were both the BEST and LOVED that thing the same way you did? I know we just all have at least one story like that. Today you are witnessing one of mine. In today's episode, I had the absolute honor of chatting with Mar Talanquer, a superstar coach in Latin America. She literally writes a column for Mexican Glamour. Yes, the magazine. Mar is a visionary coach and pioneer in somatic and nervous system work, and her mission is nothing short of extraordinary: to help women break free from societal “spells” that hold us back and embrace the full, unapologetic power of who we are. Mar shared her revolutionary concept of the eight “spells” that patriarchal culture casts over women, from the pressure to always be the best to the burden of never showing vulnerability. She introduces antidotes for these spells—ways to transform our disempowering strategies into authentic, empowering actions that align with our true selves. Here's a sneak peek of 3 the archetypes we explored in our conversation so you get a feel for the depth and nuance we are having on the show today - (feel my considerable excitement!!) The Chingona: The high-achieving, outwardly perfect woman who carries the weight of endless expectations but feels perpetually “not enough.” Mar revealed how to step into the empowering identity of the Expander—someone who inspires others not by perfection, but by showing what's possible. The Overwhelmed One: The multi-tasker extraordinaire, juggling countless ideas and responsibilities, often at the expense of her peace of mind. Mar invites this archetype to become the Multi-Creative Adventurer, embracing her creativity while simplifying and focusing on what truly matters. The Responsible One: The steady, reliable problem-solver who is there for everyone—but struggles to ask for help. Mar's antidote? A reframe as the Community Creator, a grounded leader who thrives when she allows herself to be supported, too. Mar's wisdom is powerful for anyone feeling stuck in cycles of perfectionism, overwhelm, or self-doubt. Her stories and insights will have you nodding in recognition and, most importantly, seeing a path forward to living unapologetically. Yes we talked about these deep themes AND we had so much doing it! I can't wait to hear your takeaways from this one. Listen to our chat to hear more about: How to start to live as your unapologetic, empowered self Why achieving more doesn't always feel fulfilling—and what you can do about it The first step to breaking free from the patriarchy The surprising antidote to overwhelm (it isn't doing less!) 176 When things are feeling less connected, loving and supportive in your relationship than you want them to as a highly sensitive person, there is an excellent chance a lot of it is coming from chronic dysregulation and emotional overload. In other words, stress. As Hsps, it is hard to NOT feel overstimulated or stressed in our modern lives. I've recently shared a fair amount about how this leads to nervous system and emotional dysregulation. Which is, honestly, terrible for relationship health! But it is a lot more than the outer world that creates this dysregulation and stress. In this episode I dive into the huge thing that tends to create this internal overstimulation– in other words, how we dysregulated ourselves from the inside out! It's important to SEE this, and how you do it. In this episode I will give you a great starting place. I also share how to stop this internal dysregulation so you can feel peaceful, and be able to give and receive the deepest love, and have the best marriage.I honestly think, without understanding what I share in this episode, it will be 1000 times harder to be alive and to be married as a sensitive person (it sure was for me!). Dr. Pensa explains why attention to your thinking, even when you feel your mental health is "good", can lead to personal growth and a more satisfying life. We all know the markers of excellent physical health, but what are the components of excellent mental health? Is it simply being happy all the time? Is that even possible? (Spoiler: it's not.) Using functional fitness for the body as an analogy, we look at the importance of not waiting until your health is poor before making efforts to improve or optimize. Strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, speed, and balance are facets of both functional physical health as well as your mental health and thought processes that can be developed and strengthened over time with intentional practice. A person adept in all of these spheres can become more adaptable to life's inevitable challenges, and just like in physical health, learning to lean into resistance and some discomfort in lower-stakes situations will increase your capacity over time. The concepts of thought work and emotional agility are introduced. Mentioned resource: Susan David's Emotional Agility

The Power and Complexity of Thought Work: Navigating Emotions, Intuition, and Change "Thought work" has become a popular buzzword, especially in the coaching and self-development industries. Understanding and applying thought work strategies effectively involves exploring thoughts and the interconnectedness of our emotions, intuition, and behaviors. Going Deeper We hear a lot about thought work, but there is more to it to change our outcomes. Thought work is not merely about focusing on cognitive processes; it dives deeper into the intricate connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions. Often, thought work can be detrimental. The Essence of Thought Work Strategies Thought work involves more than just thinking positive thoughts. It includes mindset and belief work, diving into how our thoughts influence our feelings and actions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a widely recognized model, highlights that our thoughts create emotions, which determine our actions. So, in this model, understanding and intentionally guiding our thoughts is crucial for personal growth and transformation. Despite the benefits of thought work strategies, it's essential to recognize their limitations. Not all feelings stem directly from thoughts. Emotions can arise independently, whether driven by past experiences, relationships, or from unprocessed trauma. Ignoring these emotions and focusing only on thought work can be detrimental. Intuition and Emotional Awareness It is important to remember that thoughts create feelings, but not all feelings are created from thoughts. We have underlying emotions and past experiences that create our feelings. Our bodies possess innate wisdom, often providing physical reactions to different situations. These visceral responses can guide our decision-making. Acknowledging these reactions allows us to tap into our intuition and align our actions with our true selves. The Dangers of a Thought-Work Only Approach in Coaching: My StoryThis week on the podcast, I'm diving deep into a topic that's close to my heart—how a thought-work only approach to coaching can be not just limiting but downright detrimental. Trust me, I don't use the word "detrimental" lightly. It's a strong term, and I'm here to unpack why I believe it's crucial to broaden our understanding of transformation beyond mere thought management. The most important message I can give to coaches about thought workTypically, I like to keep my energy positive, but today's message carries a weight that I can't ignore. Too many mindset coaches are feeling frustrated with their thoughts, emotionally activated, or caught in a cycle of self-criticism that no amount of "mind management" seems to alleviate. If you've ever sensed that something is missing in a thought-work-only approach—whether for yourself or your clients—you are sensing something important. I've been in that dark place personally and coached dozens of people who found themselves there too. I've witnessed firsthand how an overly simplistic focus on thoughts can lead to critical self-judgment and emotional distress. While it's always been a priority for me to help my clients soften that harsh internal dialogue and create safe practices, I'm speaking out now more than ever about what every coach must know. The Evolution of My UnderstandingWhile I've touched on elements of this topic in the past, this week, I'm taking a stand. If you believe that thoughts are everything when it comes to transformation, it's time to reconsider. Yes, changing your thoughts is powerful. But when we use thought work in isolation, it can also be damaging. This thought work only perspective neglects vital scientific insights about how our thoughts, emotions, and nervous systems interact. If you're feeling a bit of resistance to what I'm saying, that's okay. I understand. I once fully embraced the notion that all problems stemmed from thoughts. While I saw incredible transformations during my early coaching years, it wasn't long before I began noticing adverse effects among my clients. At first, I attributed these to a "misuse" of thought work. But the reality was more complex.Understanding the Whole Person vs. a Thought Work Only approachThe key takeaway here is simple yet profound: not all feelings arise from thoughts. Emotions have their own narratives and are often stored within our bodies, carrying important messages. The nervous system plays a crucial role in this interplay, and a "thoughts create feelings" perspective ignores that. In fact, 80% of messages travel from our bodies to our brains, not the other way around. For example, a sympathetic nervous system response can hijack your thinking, shutting down your prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain responsible for rational thought. This is why relying solely on thought work can backfire. Ignoring the emotional and physiological aspects of our experiences can heighten trauma responses and create a cycle of cognitive bypassing.Access all links and full show notes
If there's something in your life that you want and don't currently have, this episode is for you. I am excited to share some ideas about how to think about goals differently. Recently, I started working towards a goal of my own that's felt pretty elusive, honestly. During this process, I noticed I had the thought, “This is just as likely as going to Mars.” Which made me feel really defeated. To feel like one of our goals is impossible just leaves us feeling like there's nowhere left to go. But the next morning, I woke up and thought, “Okay. If NASA was going to Mars, how would they do it? What would their actual step-by-step process be to getting to Mars?” And of course I came up with a few ideas, like desire, budget, plan. And that led me to wondering what that would look like for me and my goal, if I distilled this big process down to the main things I would need to do… And that's what I want to share with you today. So think about something YOU want, that's yours and yours alone (meaning, something you have control over to a certain degree) and let's get ready to apply these four principles to what you want to accomplish. Listen and learn more about: How to be very clear about what you want The power of committing more to the process than the outcome Dispelling the idea that you have to accomplish your goals alone Why you should also think about what's in the way of your goals RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Episode 96: Thought Work and The Self Coaching Model Episode 62: Curiosity, Coaching, and Using Your Superpowers In Your Marriage with Lindsay Dotzlaf Episode 39: Soul Centered Communication Episode 76: Trauma, Resourcing, and Windows of Tolerance with Shelby Leigh The Questions for Couples Journal Private Coaching with Maggie Reyes The Marriage Mindset Makeover

Send us a Text Message. As humans, we tend to work on changing our lives, work, and relationships externally to feel better and happier. Even though you may have heard that the way to feel happier truly is through inner work, it feels so complicated, and you are not sure what that means. In this episode, I discuss how you can have emotional freedom in your life:
Do you know what a healthy relationship looks like? Many of us don't because our parents didn't know what a healthy couple looked like either. But we can change that now. In this episode, we'll talk about why we want to have a healthy relationship beyond being a good example to our children. Then we will talk about what a healthy couple looks like. I'll bet you're already doing some of these things, so it's time to add a bit more.
In this episode, I want to talk about something that may make you feel a little uncomfortable - mining for conflict. It is absolutely crucial for the health and intimacy of our relationships, but what is mining for conflict? It means actively seeking out and addressing underlying issues in a relationship. Finding these conflicts before they escalate into bigger issues and addressing the problems. Why rock the boat? Well, even if you're ignoring them, the issues are still there. I'm going to give you real steps to take to not only find the conflicts, but to fix them as well.
In this episode, I want to talk about a question I get asked all of the time. It's said in different ways, but it all comes down to this - Why does sex often seem so hard, even when we genuinely want to have it? Have you ever wondered that? Sex is a beautiful, integral part of a healthy marriage, but it's not uncommon to face challenges in this area, as we all know. So, let's break down some of the reasons why we might struggle and explore ways to make things better. Are you ready? Let's go!
In this episode, I want to talk about something that is more and more relevant in our digital age - how devices are hurting marriages and sexual relationships. Because this is now the third leading cause of divorce in the United states, it seems like it's something that needs to be discussed. So, let's discuss why devices can be so bad for our relationships, and what we can do about it.
How do you talk to yourself when you've done something wrong? In these moments, it is so common to beat ourselves up. To get angry and berate ourselves as if that will ensure we don't mess up again. In this episode, learn how to interpret what you really need to hear in tough moments in order to keep moving forward. You'll hear how to be the best coach you can be to yourself, and how to provide the level of support you need to show up the way you want to. This is something I get asked all the time! I understand why people want to know, but the answer isn't so black and white. In this episode we're going to talk about what is normal when it comes to sex in marriage, and how to get to normal if you feel like your sex life is outside the so-called norm. Are you wondering how much sex is normal in marriage? Let's answer all your questions.
Have you ever felt like you weren't enough in your life? Most people do, but when that feeling creeps into the bedroom, it can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening. Maybe you feel like you will never satisfy your spouse or maybe you're met with “I'll never be enough for you” when sharing your wants and desires. Either way, I know how difficult it can be! So, in this episode, we're going to unpack the phrase “I'll never be enough for you” and explore what's really going on beneath the surface.
Pushing your limits and seeing what you are capable of comes with some discomfort. However, some people don't let themselves even attempt to grow because they've decided they would rather have peace over discomfort. Tune in this week as Stacey Boehman and I explore the choice many people think they have to make between growth and peace, and why hiding from your dreams doesn't automatically mean you feel peace instead. We discuss the power of deciding to give something your all, how to handle the discomfort of growth, and we share our experiences of choosing to go all in on our businesses while balancing motherhood. In this episode, we are going to talk about a topic that's all too common but not often discussed—sexual martyrdom in marriage. I'll answer questions like: What does it mean to be a sexual martyr? Why is it detrimental to your relationship and yourself? And how to recognize and shift out of this mindset. Let's find a way to break this cycle!
A while ago, I was at an event with a lot of other women. A woman sat down next to me and asked, “What if the sex is really good, but the rest of the marriage isn't great?” After talking with her about this question for most of the night, I knew this was something I wanted to discuss on the podcast. Why do we use sex as a bandaid? And, more importantly, what can we do to stop it? It may be a temporary fix for the underlying issues, but in the end, it will create distance and resentment in your marriage, which none of us want. We all have used sex as a bandaid before, but let's look at how we can change that habit.
Newer entrepreneurs work just as hard as the more experienced entrepreneurs, but their results are not the same. Why? In this episode, we're tackling a delicate and crucial topic: managing your spouse's sexuality. What does this mean? Why do people do it? How does it affect both higher desire and lower desire partners? Why isn't it the best approach? We'll answer all of these questions and more. This one may surprise you. Take a listen.
When it comes to life, our perception is our reality. And these perceptions also shape our sexual relationships. Unfortunately, we often look at these perceptions as facts rather than realizing that they are an interpretation of facts. So, in this episode, we are going to talk about our perceptions, how they are shaped, and what those perceptions create in our sexual relationship. I specifically talk about the perceptions that we have around being the lower desire partner or the higher desire partner and our spouse in their role as well. Let's talk about why it's good to be aware of our perceptions and try to change them in some instances.
If you are a woman who struggles with people pleasing, with making conscious decisions that are solely for you, with the idea of creating wealth, listen in. I'm joined by the one and only Kara Loewentheil, author of Take Back Your Brain: How a Sexist Society Gets in Your Head--and How to Get It Out. In this fascinating conversation, Kara and I explore the ways men and women are socialized throughout history, how this socialization impacts how we show up in our lives, and what we can do to take back our brains. We often check in with our finances, our physical health, or our mental health, so why not our relationship health? In this episode, we will talk about why we should measure the quality of our marriages, how to measure both your relationship AND your sexual relationship. And what to do if we find things that we need to address. I would love for each of us to come through this with stronger marriages. Let's get started!
“If you love me…” I've been seeing this phrase thrown around quite a lot lately. My clients often tell me that their spouse has said, “If you love me, you'd have more sex with me.” I recently saw in a Facebook group that someone said to their spouse, “If you love me, you'll stop watching porn.” At first glance, this phrase doesn't seem like that big of a deal but it's actually quite damaging in a relationship. In fact, a therapist called it “the divorce formula.” In this episode, we're going to explore how this phrase can impact your relationship and what you can do about it.
