If you've been to a baseball game in Western Canada over the last 15 or 20 years, especially in Okotoks, you've probably seen Jonathan Hodgson around. Growing up in Calgary, he remembers going to Calgary Cannons games, then being gutted when they left in 2002. He immediately attached himself to the new Western Major Baseball League team, the Calgary Dawgs, and in his wheelchair, followed them to Okotoks a few years later, where he transitioned from fan to broadcaster, writer and media relations guru for a few years. Hodgson's journey in baseball has also included working with the Canadian Baseball Network, the Toronto Blue Jays and Victoria Harbourcats. However, home is still at Seaman Stadium with the Dawgs. We sat down recently for a candid conversation about his love of the game, the amazing connections he's made along the way, and the special sense of belonging he's received being in the baseball community.

There was already a lot of buzz around Edmonton's Michael Yusypchuk before he joined Team Alberta for this year's Canada Summer Games in Ontario. Last year's Baseball Alberta 15U “AAA” Player of the Year has been spectacular with St. Albert Minor Baseball Association teams over the years, is heading to Dawgs Academy in Okotoks, and has already committed to Missouri State. Well, he added to that legacy during the summer games with a no-hitter in the semi-final against BC, striking out seven and was a walk away from the perfect game in a 4-0 victory. Alberta went on to win silver in the tournament, and once the dust settled, we caught up with Yusypchuk to talk about the performance, his baseball journey and what he believes his ceiling might be, as the Canadian Baseball Network has him listed as a top-5 Canadian to be chosen in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Boston Warkentin was among a handful of Okotoks Dawgs players recently named to Baseball Canada's Junior National Team which took on the US in a best-of-seven Friendship Series. He pitched in ten games for Dawgs Black this summer before being summoned to the national team, where he impressed every time he stepped on the bump. Originally from Delta, BC, the 18-year-old righthander came through Dawgs Academy, where he's elevated his game to being listed by the Canadian Baseball Network as the 11th best Canadian prospect for the 2022 MLB Draft. Dana Bookman, Founder and CEO of the Canadian Women's Baseball Association (including Toronto Girls Baseball, Manitoba Girls Baseball and Nova Scotia Girls Baseball), and co-founder of Girl Expo Canada. This is an amazing story of a mom who couldn't find a girls-only league for her baseball loving daughter and didn't let that stop her. With zero baseball experience, she has created a blossoming league of over 600 players in three provinces that in two short years has caught the eye of the Toronto Blue Jays and landed Dana on the Canadian Baseball Network’s 2018 list of most influential people in Canadian Baseball - a list with very few women on it, that includes names like Joey Votto, Russell Martin, Justin Morneau and Alex Anthopoulos. Dana is passionate about teaching girls (and their parents!) the benefits of participating in sports, and especially team sports. In short, Dana's approach is "Toronto Girls Baseball teaches girls how to play to win and learn how to lose. I look at this not just as sports and exercise, but as a way to create future leaders and to give them the skills that come with teamwork" Hear how she took her new league from 42 players in 2016 to over 600 in 2018 and what she has planned for its future!
