In this second part of the Kelly & Company origin story, Kelly MacDonald takes us deeper into the decisions and challenges that shaped the show's early days. Back in 2016, AMI's leadership, including John Melville and David Errington, saw an opportunity to build on the success of the morning show by launching a new afternoon program—and Kelly had a major decision to make. After years of balancing television work and radio aspirations, Kelly was given the chance to co-host full-time and help shape a brand-new show. But making the leap meant a complete career shift, a new daily commute, and stepping into the world of live talk radio—something he had never formally trained for. From initial brainstorming sessions with Kevin Philip-Apilé and Matt Agnew to defining the show's focus on lifestyle, health, leisure, and entertainment, this episode walks through the building blocks that turned Kelly & Company from an idea into a reality on October 31, 2016. With legendary guests like Jerry Howarth and John Rafferty kicking off the first episode, the show quickly took on a life of its own. In the next Vanity Card, Kelly will explore how Kelly & Company evolved into the show we know today and what it took to grow its foundation. Stay tuned! The Blue Jays rollercoaster ride continues, but Gibby stills sees the glass as being half full. Hello, friends! Former Blue Jays broadcaster Jerry Howarth is "Gabbin' with Gibby" to tell some great stories and give insight on some of his memorable catchphrases. John & John roast the randomness of the rules and toast an amazing baseball documentary.
There's no way the BlueJays can lose this series, is there? Toronto Mike and I go over the pluses and minuses on this year's squad, and how they'll fare in the best of 3 Wild Card series against Seattle. I doubt the Mariners will score more than 2 runs against Alek Manoah, who is the best pitcher in baseball right now. Also, Sportsnet gets their own feed, which means we don't have to watch the U.S. announcers babble on about poutine and ice fishing. Unfortunately, Dan Shulman won' be doing the Sportsnet games as he is committed to ESPN radio. Speaking of which, legendary Jays radio announcer Jerry Howarth is a finalist for the Ford Frick award for broadcasting excellence. He spent 37 years in the booth, and I've got a good story to tell about his early days in Toronto. We also get into hockey, and specifically the sad story of Hockey Canada, and how it needs to be blown up real good after all it's major sponsors took a hike in light of recent revelations. Enjoy!
COUNTDOWN EPISODE 48 A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: A corrupt unstable ex-president is trying to use a corrupted Supreme Court to avoid prison - and that's just the start of our troubles (4:20) Happily, democracy has survived not so much through the exertions of those of us who would save it, but thanks to the laugh-out-loud stupidity of those who would destroy it (4:46) So LET'S laugh out loud. (5:00) Trump made a fool out of himself in Miami yesterday (7:25) Ron DeSantis implied the liberal media controls the weather (8:08) The Herschel Walker story - now morphed into "He paid for the abortion for the mother of one of his children" - precipitated a hilarious confession about GOP hypocrisy (9:49) Alina Habba is a blooper factory (10:35) Senator Marshall can't pronounce "9/11" (11:15) Ron Johnson endorses white supremacy (11:27) CPAC admitted its members are terrorists (11:54) And Trump actually said "When they leak on my administration." Wait - WHAT? B-Block (15:01) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Xica, in Van Nuys (16:07) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The bill to remove our missile systems out of Saudi Arabia after their oil blackmail, and bad polling news for Herschel and Boebert. (18:15) IN SPORTS: Steven Vogt goes out with a bang; maybe the real Most Valuable Player of the American League is neither Judge nor Ohtani; and the announcer nominees for the Baseball Hall of Fame are revealed (24:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: GOP Governor candidate swears there are kids "identifying" as cats, another GOP Congressional candidate exaggerates his military record, and they compete with Fox's Mark Levin's latest high-pitched whine. C-Block (27:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The day Dodgers' owner Walter O'Malley nearly caused his top lieutenant to pass out by saying "We lost $2,000,000 last year" and why that doesn't mean anything close to what it would sound like to us civilians.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 1982, he joined Tom Cheek as full-time play-by-play partner. For the next 23 years, "Tom and Jerry" would be the radio voices of the Blue Jays. Mike chats with Sportsnet baseball analyst Joe Siddall about his years playing for the Expos, Marlins and Tigers, how Jerry Howarth helped him become a broadcaster, his move from the radio booth to television and more.
For 36 seasons he was the voice of the Blue Jays, along with his broadcast partner Tom Cheek and then several others until he elected to retire to lighten his load and focus more on his health. Jerry Howarth came to Toronto via Salt Lake City and Tacoma WA, a long way from California. Yet, Toronto for Jerry is home and we caught up with him today prior to his regular bridge game. Jerry sounds identical today to the old tapes you may find of him doing college football from the 1970's . More importantly, you can tell from spending just a few minutes with Jerry that he remains true to himself without wavering one bit.Jerry is personable, friendly and a pleasure to speak with. He remembers every detail as if it was yesterday always applying the lens of good family person first and then baseball second.Jerry shares his stories, thoughts and feelings about Toronto, playing in Canada vs. the United States, how he almost derailed a trade and his thoughts on how Alex Anthopolous exit was booted like a random infield grounder through Manny Lee's legs. No matter your age, you will remember fondly the voice that started every game with "Hello friends" and likely had a "There, she, goes" in it as a Blue Jay player went deep. With dire news around us, including today's grandstanding, chest thumping, bargaining by MLB Jerry will hopefully bring you back to a better time when games where, you know being played.
One day, a college quarterback at Central Michigan University who was born, raised and living in Windsor Ontario (just outside of Detroit) got a call from a scout from the Montreal Expos to try out for their team. The rest is history. You've heard him on the radio and you've seen him on TV. If you are at all like me you probably don't know much about Joe Siddall. This is his story and it is a mix of every emotion you have in your arsenal. After multiple years in the minor leagues Joe made it to the bigs, playing for the Montreal Expos under Felipe Alou. A defensive catcher he enjoyed stops with the Marlins, Tigers and Red Sox before hanging them up and becoming a bullpen guru for the Tigers.Joe and his wife, both from Windsor, living in the same neighborhood they grew up in lived what sounds like a typical life with 4 kids until tragically their youngest son Kevin lost a heroic battle to Cancer. Kevin was 14 at the time In the fog of grieving, Jerry Howarth reached out and the next thing he knew he was the radio play by play voice of the Toronto Blue Jays.Joe's a thoughtful broadcaster who has endured himself to Blue Jays fans of all ages. His mix of personal experience, dedication to honesty and integrity and his family have continued to guide him in his life.Admittedly, I knew very little about the man behind the voice that I've grown to like telling me stories while providing analysis. I know some now, but look forward to learning more in the future.
Mike chats with Scott Ferguson about his years at 1430 and 590 covering Blue Jays baseball, working the radio broadcasts with Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth, his move to The Team 1050, TSN Radio, and his current health challenge.

Howarth had shared the play-by-play duties with his late longtime broadcast partner Tom Cheek from 1982 until 2005, and then served as the play-by-play announcer until announcing his retirement before the start of spring training 2018. Jerry graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Santa Clara in 1968, then served two years as an officer in the U.S. Army, and then finally began his decades-long career as a sportscaster. Chapter Description: My friend Drew Dudley once told me that, other than his parents, he hadn’t heard anyone speak to him more in his life than Jerry Howarth … The voice of the Toronto Blue Jays. I can relate. Growing up I would listen to Jerry Howarth call the Blue Jays games on the radio on long summer drives, with my friends at the park, or just on my clock radio with the “Sleep” timer on as I fell asleep. I was thrilled to visit the Skydome in downtown Toronto to sit down with Jerry Howarth for Chapter 30 of 3 Books. We get comfy watching batting practice together with some reggae and dance music in the background. Why do I love Jerry? Because for thirty-six years he was a local leader and community-builder who created trust with millions of baseball fans… In addition to discussing his book Hello Friends, Jerry and I talk about: How do we build a community? How do we develop authentic connections? How can we learn the art of being objective? And how do we learn to coach leaders from the ground up? So come join me and Jerry in the front seats of the Skydome just before the game begins. Welcome to Chapter 30 of 3 Books. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How can you become a “glass overflowing” kind of person? How can we lose with integrity and grace? What’s most important when it comes to public speaking and emceeing? How can we develop more empathy? How can death unite and connect us with others? Why shouldn’t you wear your religion on your sleeve? Why should you keep background noise in recordings and tapings? How do you take a stand with integrity? What can major league coaches learn from coaching children? What’s the only thing capable of hiding talent? Leave us a voicemail! Your message may be included in a future episode: 1-833-READ-A-LOT. Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth were like extended family for Toronto Blue Jays fans, all you have to do is mention their first names, and people in Canada know exactly who you are referring too. From 1982-2004, the duo broadcasted the sights and sounds of Major League Baseball into cars, garages, workplaces and homes across the country via radio and later, the internet. When a cancer diagnosis forced Cheek to vacate the booth permanently 15 years ago, Jerry Howarth continued to call games until a surprise retirement announcement in Feb. 2018. Now he revisits his journey, from growing up in California to becoming the renowned voice of the Blue Jays for 36 years, in a new book aptly titled: Hello Friends!: Stories from My Life and Blue Jays Baseball. Listen as he discusses what influenced his style, broadcasting two historic World Series runs in 1992 and 1993, and the evolution of the Jays fanbase, plus a blow-by-blow account of an unprecedented 53-minute 7th inning, in Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS …. From Bobby Cox to Jose Bautista and everything in between, our conversation with Howarth gives insight into how he did, and still continues to, touch us all.
A legendary voice joins us in studio. Jerry Howarth, former Blue Jays radio voice, joined Barry and Matt in studio to chat about his new book, Hello Friends! Jerry and Barry reminisce about how Barry’s career was kickstarted by Jerry. Matt chimes in and gushes about Jerry’s impact on his baseball experience. The guys detail the principles of broadcasting, according to Jerry, and how HE embarked on the journey that brought him to the Blue Jays broadcast booth. What does Jerry do to prep for a chat with an athlete? Jerry chats about the late Tom Cheek and Tom’s last inning in the booth. It’s only part 1! There’s more to come in part 2 on our members only show. The First Pitch: The new Jaywalk gear has arrived. The guys discuss the Opening Day for the Blue Jays and Marcus Stroman’s sparkling first start. It appears as though the rift between Aaron Sanchez and the aforementioned Stroman has been mended. The trade of Kendrys Morales is touched on. Did Kendrys know what was happening? Jude MacDonald on the Leafs: What is wrong with Frederik Andersen and does it have to do with fatigue. Does the division of the minutes for the Leafs defence makes sense? Ask Barry Davis: How do minor leaguers survive on so little income? Does Charlie Montoyo’s minor league record at all translate into success in the majors? The results of the Fair or Foul Poll are revealed. All that and more!

Matt and Rob return for your Friday afternoon edition of the podcast. The guys give their thoughts on a strange phenomenon that has surrounded the Maple Leafs all season long and Rob suggests that they might be better off not having home ice advantage against the Bruins in Round 1. Later on, one of the signature voices of a generation of Blue Jays baseball has put out a new book. Why does Jerry Howarth hold such a strong place in the hearts of the fanbase and why does he associate himself more with the 15/16 playoff Jays than with the e92/93 World Series teams? Heading to the homestretch, literally, the Blue Jays are giving the host plenty of things to talk about!Ryan Andrews spends the first segment discussing the performances from the 2-1 Blue Jays loss to the Orioles on Sept. 19. The host gives credit to Marco Estrada for delivering a start that the veteran right-hander needed to restablish some value heading into an off-season where he will be looking for a deal. However, Luis Rivera has earned ire once again for a terrible attempt to convert a Kendrys Morales fourth-inning fly ball into a sac fly. There was no reason for Billy McKinney to run there, and Andrews makes it known how they feel about Rivera's tenure. Then, Andrews discusses Jerry Howarth's assertion that John Schneider would be his pick to manage the Blue Jays in 2019, citing Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash. Andrews agrees with the veteran radio man, particularly Schneider's ability to use the speed on his roster to greater effect than the big-league club. Finally, Andrews previews the series opener against Tampa Bay. The Nova Scotian points out what they think is on the line for Sam Gaviglio and what his role will be for the Blue Jays in 2019. Yes he will have a role. Sunday’s late night buzzer beater that wasn’t has everyone buzzing on this week’s I’ll Have Another. Doug Smith calls in from Sacramento to answer the obvious ― what exactly happened after Toronto Raptors Terrence Ross made that shot against the Kings ― and talk player reactions, the risk with replays and whether or not the away team would have actually won the game in overtime. Plus, what’s more worrying: the blown call or the Raptors giving up more than 30 points in the first quarter? Also on tap: coffee, sizing up the Grey Cup match up and whether anyone will actually attend, Toronto FC’s time to shine and double cheers for Jerry Howarth and the Canadian Football League.
Greg and Josh break down the recent signings of Kendrys Morales and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., then they go over the Bautista/Encarnacion qualifying offer decisions and their ramifications, the reported offer to Brett Cecil, and some of the goofiness that came along with the Cy Young voting results. They also answer some listener questions and wish a speedy recovery to Jerry Howarth in his fight with prostate cancer.
