Im Juni beginnt die Saison der Gartendistel, wie die Artischocke auch genannt wird. Die grossen, grünen Blütenknospen sind dann frisch auf dem Markt erhältlich. Die Saison der «Äss-Distle» beginnt später – im Juli und August. Und im Spätherbst startet die Ernte der «Wälsch-Distle». Sie ist auch bekannt unter dem Namen Cardy. Eigentlich wird sie einjährig angebaut, doch SRF-Gartenfachfrau Silvia Meister schätzt sie als mehrjährige Gemüsepflanze. Die Cardy schmeckt ähnlich wie Artischocken, nur etwas nussiger.

Sie stechen und kratzen. Sie breiten sich oft rasch und flächendeckend aus. Doch einige gelten als Delikatesse und manche eignen sich sogar als Futtermittel. SRF-Gartenfachfrau Silvia Meister gibt einen Überblick. Disteln sind äusserst wehrhafte Pflanzen. Die ursprüngliche indogermanische Bedeutung des Wortes «Distel» lautet: spitzig, stachelig, scharf. Verschiedene Distelarten wurden in der Schweiz seit Jahrhunderten vielfältig genutzt – etwa als: · Gemüse in der welschen Schweiz: Die «Wälschdistle», gemeint ist die Wilde Artischocke, der sogenannte Cardy. · Viehfutter: Verschiedene Gänsedisteln, auch Bitterdistel, Milchdistel oder «Sü-Dischtle» genannt. · Heilpflanze: Etwa die Mariendistel – sie wird auch Froschdistel genannt, wegen ihrer getupften Blätter. · Wetterzeiger: Die Silberdistel zeigt zuverlässig höhere Luftfeuchtigkeit und damit ein nahendes Tiefdruckgebiet an. · Schnitt- und Trockenblume: Die Edeldistel, auch Mannstreu oder «Chrüsi-Distel» genannt. Die meisten Weidetiere meiden die stacheligen Pflanzen. Nur Esel mit ihren festen Lippen und Zungen sowie Ziegen fressen Disteln. Neben dem Schutz erfüllt das stachelige Gewand noch eine wichtige Funktion: Disteln wachsen oft an trockenen, sonnigen Standorten mit wasserdurchlässiger Erde – Wasser ist hier Mangelware. An ihren Stacheln perlt Regenwasser ab und tropft direkt zu den Wurzeln.

Wes and Jan are in a singing group called "Cardy and Coke" and have been very successful over the years singing and writing songs for themselves and celebrities Ken Dodd and Daniel O'donnell.Wes was born during the second world war and was fathered by an American over here in the UK as a serviceman, working at the local airfield of Wormingford.For 50 years Wes has been trying to trace his long lost father who had returned to the United States in the 1940's but it wasn't until his very good friend and singing partner Jan gave Wes a DNA testing kit for his birthday.Wes and Jan tells us the whole story and the remarkable events that took place following this life changing gift, they discuss the DNA story and how this is available for everyone trying to trace long lost family and those building their own family tree.This is a remarkable story and we thank Wes and Jan for sharing this very personal journey with us all today.DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, & reproduction of all known organisms including many viruses.
