Daniel Ramos, 40, acute myeloblastic leukemia, Attleboro, with daughter, Leia Ramos (8), wife, Katharine Ramos, sister, Lidia Thomas, and Dr. Richard Stone, Chief of Staff and Director, Translational Research, Adult Leukemia Program, Dana-Farber wit his doctor, Dr. Richard Stone ● Daniel had noticed his energy and endurance levels were very low and spoke to hisdoctor about it at his annual physical. Subsequent bloodwork showed very highwhite blood cell counts and he was told to go to the emergency room at Brighamand Women's as they were confident it was Leukemia. This took place at the heightof the pandemic, which meant he could not have any visitors with him, making it avery solitary experience. Upon being admitted to the emergency room, he wasintroduced to Dr. Richard Stone and Ilene Galinsky who were able to shed light on adark situation. In a world where the word "hero" seems to be thrown around a little too easily, they are true heroes. The nurses on the seventh floor were also absoluteangels and treated him like extended family made the situation a bit easier.● His treatment consisted of induction chemotherapy and a research drug calledCrenolanib that targets the mutation that he had. The treatments were successful ingetting him into full remission. Due to his mutation, Daniel also underwent a stemcell transplant, for which his sister was a perfect match, to try to achieve a lastingcure. He is doing very well and is still in remission so far, up for immunizations 24months post-transplant.● Daniel loves to work on and restore cars and motorized equipment as well ascamping and helping people.● He is a regional maintenance director for Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness● Daniel, born and raised in New England, is proud of Boston's Dana-Farber. Addison Gould (GOOLD), 5, optic pathways glioma (GLEE-OH-MAH), Bourne, with mom,Jillian, and brother, Colin (7)● Addison was born with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NER-RO-FI-BRO-MAH-TOH-SIS).Neurofibromatosis is a set of complex disorders that affects almost every organsystem, causing tumors to grow on nerves in the brain and throughout the body.Addison's pediatrician noticed that one of Addison's eyelids were drooping in aroutine checkup, so she had an MRI to investigate further. She was diagnosed withcancerous Optic Pathways Gliomas in 2019 and in August 2020, scans revealed thather gliomas and grown substantially, making her left eye protrude from its socket.● Addison is blind in one eye. Her treatment has included chemotherapy as well asseveral oral medications and will likely be in treatment for the rest of her life.● Addison loves swimming in the pool, coloring and playing with Legos. She especiallyloves playing in the playroom and in the music room at the Jimmy Fund Clinic.Addison loves to 'help' her doctors and nurses during her visits and treatments, bychecking her stuffed animal vital signs that she brings with her to the Clinic.● The Jimmy Fund Clinic feels like their extended family and they are incredibly gratefulfor their support every step of the way. Optic pathways glioma facts● Slow-growing brain tumor that arises in or around the optic nerve, which connectsthe eye to the brain.● As the tumor progresses, it presses on the optic nerve, causing a child's vision toworsen.● Blindness can occur, but only in about 5% of cases.● While these are serious tumors, they have a high cure rate and the survival rate foroptic pathway glioma is near 90%● These tumors can affect the body's endocrine functions, such as hormoneproduction, salt and water balance, appetite, and sleep.● More than 75% of these tumors occur during the first 10 years of life and most arediagnosed in children age 5 or younger.● Optic pathway tumors account for up to 5% of primary central nervous systemtumors in children.
