Nicholas "Harry" Callas reacts to the MLB playoff games that took place this week. Is baseball more exciting with this new playoff format?
It's a Football (baseball) Friday and we are soooooooo ready for the ALDS. We now have an opponent and a game time as the M's face the Tigers and things get underway tomorrow at 5:38pm. :30- ABCs of the Mariners - E is for Everyone as in everyone is invited to check out our postseason coverage- a roundtable today and postgame shows following every game! - F is for Ferguson as in Caleb. Could he end up playing a pretty significant role in the playoffs? - G is for Gilbert or George: maybe the decision on starter #1 isn't between Gilbert and Castillo, but between Gilbert and Kirby and it's looking more and more like Woo might not even make the roster. :45- The Seahawks host the Buccaneers on Sunday and it's time for our No Cliché Keys to Victory! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We cover the top 8 stories of the week in the OCHO 1. Mariners will face Detroit 2. The ALDS starts tomorrow 3. The Elite 8 is set 4. Seahawks host the Bucs on Sunday 5. Week 5 kicked off last night with the 49ers and Rams 6. The Huskies face the Terps in Maryland 7. The Sounders host the Timbers in front of a sold out crowd tomorrow night 8. WNBA finals begin tonight Ohhh, is that all that's going on this weekend? :30- KYLE PETERSON joins us fresh off the call of the AL wildcard to give us his thoughts on this Detroit Tigers team and how they matchup with the Mariners. :45- The Huskies are back in action in Maryland this weekend, but they aren't the only big ten teams playing, let's take a look! The summer has come to a close in a crescendo of chaos. Political violence, confusion and anger are the defining features of the American vibe. And the American vibe, it ain't good. Tension everywhere as new cities are added to the target list seemingly daily. Memphis, LA, New York, Chicago. And now a government shutdown when things couldn't get any more fraught. It's a good time to stay frosty and an even better time to stay vigilant. And now, on the heels of this week's unprecedented speech at Quantico by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and President Trump, we need some perspective. And this week we're joined by one of our favorite voices to hear from — one of America's favorite voices to hear from — when we need clarity. Legendary documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is back for another stirring, timely exploration of America's ongoing revolution—past and present with your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff). Ken reflects on the meaning of patriotism, baseball's role in American life, and the fragile state of democracy in 2025. From the complexity of the nation's origins to the lessons of George Washington's leadership and baseball's enduring power, this episode is bringing the light to counteract all of the heat of our completely broken political system. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories—and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration, and hope. Headlines and SOFTY Softy usually joins us to talk Huskies, but let's be honest, it's impossible not to talk Mariners right now! We weave Mariners playoffs, Huskies at Maryland and awkwardness perfectly through the conversation… with extra awkwardness. How does Softy feel about that Husky loss to Ohio State and how is he feeling about this Saturday in Maryland? :30- Dillon Gabriel has been given the starting nod in Cleveland, moving Joe Flacco to the backup role while Shadeur Sanders remains the 3rd string QB, but it was “interview response” yesterday that made headlines. :35- Bucky makes his Fact or Fiction pick! :45- The rest vs rust debate rages on with the Mariners having a week off before the ALDS. Is the rest more important than worrying about the rust? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We kicked off Cal-O-Ween last night with the first official Dumpkin carving and Cal even celebrated the holiday with a home run at the scrimmage. We have 3 game 3's today and we couldn't be more excited to watch them all as we await the Mariners ALDS opponent. :30- ABCs of the Mariners - B is for bullpen: this time of the year is when having a great bullpen really makes a difference - C is for Cal: it has been the year of Cal, but for Cal, it is all about what happens from here on out. - D is for Dumpkins, the patches are already getting overrun, so get your dumpkins now! :45- NFL News and Notes - Something seems off about this Lamar Jackson injury- is he really injured or did he pull himself out of the game? CAM CLEELAND (Learfield Washington color analyst) We get Cam's thoughts on the Huskies' loss to Ohio State last weekend and look ahead to the Dawgs at Maryland on Saturday. :30- ANGIE MENTINK (ROOT Sports) Angie joins us ahead of this weekend's ALDS. How will the Mariners rotation and what does Angie think of this team in the playoffs? :45- What did we learn from Day 1 of the wildcard? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's officially time for October baseball! The 1st wildcard games were played yesterday and the excitement is building as we inch closer to the ALDS on Saturday. Pitching impressed yesterday in most of the games and while the Mariners may not have top tier talent like Skubal and Crochet, they have 4 starters who sit on the tier just below that, something no other team has. :30- It's time for a look at the AFC as we sit at the quarter pole of the season: - What is going on with Baltimore? It looks like they gave up on Sunday and now Lamar Jackson is out for 3 weeks. Are they questioning themselves? Will they rally to win a division that weaker with the Joe Burrow injury? - Several AFC teams seem primed to de-throne the Chiefs as the darlings of the west. Will it be the Chargers or Broncos? - The South is up for grabs, but who will step up? :45- ABCs of the Mariners - A is for Arozarena: he might be the biggest wild card after being ice cold the last month or so and he's been known to step up his game when the lights are the brightest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What a great problem to have! Naming the Mariners #1 starter: the great debate! Who should get the nod in game 1 on Saturday? :30- Happy Humpday! Nick Emmanwori is expected to play on Sunday, how big of an impact can he have on this defense? :45- We close out the show with one last thing! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The dust is beginning to settle from the "biggest Ryder Cup ever" and the PGA of America has found itself in the crosshairs of everyone in golf. The organization has still not formally acknowledged anything regarding fan behavior or experience at Bethpage, but a Don Rea interview from Sunday morning has surfaced and provides Andy and Brendan with plenty of fodder. The President of the 31,000 thought that you could find fans like the ones on Saturday at a "youth soccer game" and claimed that he hadn't heard any of the barbs thrown at Rory McIlroy during the week. He wrapped up his chat with BBC by saying that "golf is the engine of good," which sets Andy and Brendan off to the races. They look back at the week as a whole and wonder what the PGA of America's true focus was on and whether the organization truly cared about putting on a quality golf tournament. The two discuss where the Ryder Cup should go from here and whether it needs to be sold or licensed to another company for future installments in the United States. After a complete dissection of Mr. Rea's quotes, it's back to normal in golf with plenty on the Schedule for the Week. It's chicken time at the Sanderson, you can go watch the Lotte at Lottie's, and Furyk & Friends has a distinct Ryder Cup feel! Plenty of LIV players and Ryder Cuppers will play at the Dunhill Links on the DP World Tour with celebs like Wayne Gretzky, Bill Murray, and the bassist from Linkin Park. A brief Playoff Baseball minute sends us home for this Wednesday episode with both the Guardians and Cubs starting their runs on Tuesday afternoon. Always remember, by listening to this podcast, you're part of the engine of good!
