Welcome to Episode 64 of Tablesetters! We've got a special one today as Cole Wright, studio host for Marquee Sports Network, joins us to break down the Cubs' 2025 season, the state of the NL Central, and a long-overdue moment in franchise history. We kick things off with a deep dive into the Cubs' season opener in Tokyo against the Dodgers—a global spectacle featuring Shohei Ohtani and Seiya Suzuki's return to Japan. Cole shares his thoughts on the significance of this international showdown and how it could set the tone for the Cubs' season. From there, we analyze what needs to go right for the Cubs to push into playoff contention after falling just short last season. We discuss the impact of Kyle Tucker's one-year deal, Cody Bellinger's departure, and how their stacked farm system—headlined by Matt Shaw, Cade Horton, and Owen Caissie—fits into the team's long-term plans. We also get into some of the biggest question marks for 2025, including the Cubs' ongoing third base situation, Justin Turner's veteran presence, and how close they really were to landing Alex Bregman. Plus, we break down the pitching staff, the closer role, and what Pete Crow-Armstrong needs to do in his first full MLB season. And with Craig Counsell at the helm, how will his leadership shape the team's identity moving forward? Of course, we can't talk Cubs history without touching on one of its most talked about figures—Sammy Sosa. After years of uncertainty, the franchise is finally embracing one of its all-time greats. We reflect on what this moment means for Cubs fans, Sosa's legacy, and how Cole sees his place in the team's history. As work continues on team Top 30 rankings (coming the week of March 3!), there are still plenty of ways to slice and dice the already-released lists. On this week's episode of the MLB Pipeline Podcast, Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff do just that, starting with Jim and Jonathan drafting off the positional Top 10s, with the caveat of filling outa lineup while taking one prospect per ranking spot. After that, Jim chatted with Cubs outfield prospect Owen Caissie (No. 54 on the Top 100) before the gang talked about some prospects who just missed the list. As always, the episode concludes with a question from the mailbag, this time discussing who could make a Jackson Merrill-like jump to the big leagues in 2025. Kevin Alcántara was sitting in his room in Arizona in late September, waiting to go back home to the Dominican Republic when he got the call of a lifetime from assistant general manager Jared Banner telling him he was going to the big leagues. The Cubs top prospect recalled that special day and much more on a prospect-heavy podcast that features both him and infielder James Triantos. Alcántara joined host Andy Martínez at Cubs Convention to discuss that special day and what it was like to become a major leaguer. Then, Alcántara discussed the difficult adjustment of going to the United States for the first time and having to learn a new language, culture and the adjustments that come with that. He discusses the friendships he's made with other top 100 prospects in the Cubs organization, including Matt Shaw, Triantos and Owen Caissie. Later in the podcast, another top-100 prospect Triantos discusses his time in the Cubs system and what it's like to be a part of such a talent-laden group. He shares his thoughts on some of the most underrated and underlooked prospects the Cubs have, too. Alcántara and Triantos have both been in the organization long enough to have seen it rise from one of the game's weakest to one of the best. They detail what it's like having seen that and what the players down on the farm share in common as they strive to try and reach Wrigley Field.

Podcast Episode 89 - Show Notes Title: Process…or Processing Loss Episode Summary: In this episode, I take a deep dive into the 2024 Cubs season, reflecting on the highs, lows, and what lies ahead for the team. From comparing this season to previous disappointing years, like 2004 and 1985, to assessing the team's shortcomings, I break down where things went wrong and what needs to change. This episode is all about processing the loss of a season, looking at the team's structure, and starting to think about the future. Topics Covered: Introduction to Episode 89 Why I've named this the “Robert Stock Episode” – and no, it's not Robert Stack from Unsolved Mysteries. Overview of the Cubs' season: reflecting on the disappointments, missed expectations, and underperformance. Processing Loss: Parallels with Previous Cubs Seasons I compare 2024 to past disappointing seasons like 2004 and 1985. Injuries, bad trades, and underperformance defined these seasons, and 2024 feels eerily similar. How this year ranks as one of the most disappointing Cubs seasons in my fandom. Expectations vs. Reality: Preseason Projections Revisiting preseason predictions and betting lines, which had the Cubs pegged at around 84-86 wins. Hosts Greg Huss and Alex Cohen break down a whole host of prospects that currently call Iowa home: Owen Caissie, Kevin Alcantara, Matt Shaw, James Triantos, Moises Ballesteros, Ed Howard, Brandon Birdsell, Connor Noland, and Michael Arias.
In this episode, I dive deep into the current state of the Cubs, focusing heavily on Kyle Hendricks, his career, and what might be his final days with the team. I start by reflecting on the Cubs' season, highlighting their ups and downs, and the precarious position they find themselves in as they fight to stay above .500 and keep their playoff hopes alive. I discuss the critical role Kyle Hendricks has played over the years, from his iconic performances in the 2016 postseason to his steady presence on the mound. Despite his struggles this season, I emphasize the respect and admiration I have for him and why it's essential for the Cubs to find a graceful exit for him, allowing him to retire on a high note, ideally as a Cub for life. Additionally, I talk about the team's recent roster moves, including the departures of Hector Naras and David Bote, and the uncertain future of other players like Drew Smyly. I touch on the financial aspects of the team, especially regarding the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT), and how the Cubs are navigating the fine line of trying to win now while also planning for the future. I also explore the potential September call-ups, focusing on young talents like Jordan Wicks, Brandon Birdsell, and position players like Owen Caissie and Moises Ballesteros. These players represent the future of the Cubs, and I speculate on who might get a shot at the majors as the season winds down. Throughout the episode, I weave in personal anecdotes, including how Kyle Hendricks has been a significant figure in my baseball journey, both as a fan and as a father watching my son develop as a pitcher. This episode is as much about baseball as it is about the emotions and memories tied to being a Cubs fan. Finally, I look ahead to the crucial upcoming games against the Nationals, Yankees, and Dodgers, and what the Cubs need to do to keep their playoff hopes alive. It's a time of trying while not fully trying, a delicate balance that will define the rest of the season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
