Alas, another season ends. This week, Yankees Magazine deputy editor Jon Schwartz and YES Network's Meredith Marakovits look back on the 2025 season, in particular the 3 games to 1 loss to Toronto in the American League Division Series. They discuss how it all played out, what they heard behind the scenes and the emotions of watching a promising year come to an end short of the goal. Then, they begin the process of looking forward to the 2026 Yankees season. Hope, as always, springs eternal. Finally, Yankees senior museum curator Brian Richards opens the History Books for a chapter about World Series bling. This episode is brought to you by the 2026 Infiniti QX60. Guests: Toronto Star baseball columnist Gregor Chisholm, Kim's Convenience/The Mandalorian's Paul Sun-Hyung Lee      It took a while, but the Toronto Blue Jays have an opponent in the American League Championship Series that begins Sunday night at Rogers Centre.   The Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in the decisive Game 5 of their American League Division Series, but it took them an all-time record (for a winner-take-all game) 15 innings to do it, which is certainly good news for the Jays, who were home and likely in bed watching things finish up just after 1:00 a.m. Eastern time.   We discuss the Jays-Mariners ALCS match-up with Gregor Chisholm and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, looking at how the short rest – and using three starting pitchers Friday night – might affect the M's as they try to get to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. For the Jays, it would be their first trip to the Fall Classic since 1993.   Will Cal Raleigh be Seattle's version of Aaron Judge? Will the Mariners have anything left after an exhausting, emotional series with the Detroit Tigers, especially after having to win 17 of 18 down the stretch just to win their division? What did the Jays prove to the baseball world with their win over the New York Yankees in their ALDS?   These questions and more will be answered, or at least will attempt to be answered, on this playoff bonus episode of Deep Left Field!   You can be part of the next episode by sending your questions and comments to the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca.

And Kim needs to catch up on his sleep because today has the potential to be a famous day in Seattle sports. Not because of a Washington win over Rutgers, but a Mariners playoff triumph over the Tigers to win the American League Division Series. Let's just say the traffic in and around Seattle is going to be a bit rough with the Mariners game starting at 5 pm local time, an hour before the start of the Rutgers-Washington game. A silver lining? The rain looks to stay away during the games. During the 70-minute pregame show, the following topics were discussed: Will Jacob Manu play or not, depending on whether he still plans on redshirting this season? The matchup between UW's offense and Rutgers' defense. Will Maximus McCree start again? And who would back him up?Should Rutgers spy Demond Williams? The matchup between Rutgers' offense and UW's defense. How big would it be to get Tacario Davis back tonight?Could tonight be the UW debut of freshman Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, and if so, how would he be used?Recruiting update, including two committed players who are unofficially visiting.Final Thoughts. Writer, published author, creator of the Funny 115 and lifelong Seattle sports fan Mario Lanza returns to the Jack Vita Show at the perfect time: the Seattle Mariners are in sole possession of first place in the American League West!   Entering July 20, the Mariners were 47-48, 10 games back of the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. In a little over a month, the M's have not only caught up with the Rangers, but surpassed them in the division race. The race is far from, over though. With five weeks remaining in the regular season, the AL West is shaping up to be a three-team race, with the Houston Astros also in the mix. The Astros have won the division five of the last six years, and eliminated the Mariners from contention in the American League Division Series last October. Will the Mariners finally top the Astros, and win their first division title since 2001? Mario weighs in.   Mario and Jack also discuss the total collapse of the Rangers, who are now 33-37 since June 6. The Rangers entered June 7 with a 40-20 record. Shohei Ohtani suffered a torn UCL recently, which will likely require Tommy John surgery, and could spell the end of his pitching days. Mario and Jack react. Last week, Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf did the unthinkable: he fired somebody! Vice president Kenny Williams and general manager Rick Hahn were relieved of their duties, in the middle of an abysmal White Sox season. Jack shares why he was surprised by the move, and what it means for the organization going forward. In other news, the New York Yankees continue to struggle, Mario and Jack share their thoughts on the new rules and recent changes that have come to Major League Baseball, and Mario discusses his new project, "Mario Stories", in addition to his other work, covering Survivor, movies and Saturday Night Live.   Mario has written about CBS' hit reality competition show, Survivor, for over 20 years now. He has a website, The Funny 115, where he counts down the funniest moments in the show's history. He cohosts a Survivor podcast, The Survivor Historians, where he provides historical context to the show's early seasons. He has a book, When It Was Worth Playing For: My Experiences Writing About the TV Show "Survivor", available for purchase on Amazon.   In addition to covering Survivor, Mario has a movie podcast called Staff Picks, which Jack was a guest on earlier this year, discussing one of his favorite films, Moneyball.   Most recently, Mario has been working on a writing project called "Mario Stories", where he tells unforgettable stories from his childhood, including one in which his father put a bounty on an opposing player in a youth football game.   You can follow Mario on Twitter (@MarioJLanza).
