Baseball Hall of Famer Pat Gillick is one of only 3 General Managers in history to win World Series titles with multiple franchises (Toronto in 92 & 93, Philadelphia in 08). He is also one of only 5 GM's enshrined in the HOF. In all, he led 4 different franchises to League Championship series (Baltimore and Seattle also). Fascinating to hear his stories as he discusses each of those unique situations (from expansion slow-builds to 'win-now' mentalities), and what it took to build winners. Renowned curator, and a trailblazer of “usefulness” in art, Alistair Hudson is the forthcoming Artistic & Scientific Chairman of ZKM (Center for Art & Media in Karlsruhe.Alistair Hudson grabbed everybody's attention when - with Adam Sutherland - he turned Grizedale Arts, an art institution in Northwest England's Lake District, into a hotspot of artistic discussion and production between 2004 and 2015. A directorship followed, at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. There he developed the idea of the useful museum, opening up questions on how the museum ‘can be used' otherwise; simultaneously reflecting on a wide collection as well as new commissions and projects. In collaboration with the artist Tania Bruguera the Van Abbemuseum and Queens Museum, he got involved in the exhibition "Museum of Arte Util", later undertaking the role of co-directorship of the Association de Arte Útil that resulted from the exhibition. This project has become a repository of artistic activities that propose new uses for art, work on a 1:1 scale, and embrace artistic thinking to respond to urgencies, in short, all things dear to Ahali Conversations so far. This Episode includes additional questions by Betül Aksu, Ceminay Kara, Sarp Özer, and Alessandra Saviotti.Over the last two decades, Grizedale Arts has become an acclaimed and influential model for a new kind of art institution, one that works beyond the established structures of the contemporary art world.Liam Gillick works across diverse forms, whose wider body of work includes published essays and collaborative projects, all of which inform (and are informed by) his art practice. The British Home Office (the UK ministry responsible for immigration, security, and law and order) building was designed by Terry Farrell and has multiple integrated artworks by Gillick.Terminal Convention was a contemporary exhibition and symposium housed in the decommissioned terminal building of Cork International Airport in the Republic of Ireland. https://rhizome.org/editorial/2011/apr/07/terminal-convention/Arte Útil roughly translates into English as 'useful art' but it goes further suggesting art as a tool or device.https://www.arte-util.orgTania Bruguera is a politically motivated performance artist, who explores the relationship between art, activism, and social change in works that examine the social effects of political and economic power. https://art21.org/artist/tania-bruguera/The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is one of the leading museums for contemporary art in Europe. https://vanabbemuseum.nl/enCharles Esche is a museum director, who has been directing the Van Abbemuseum since 2004.John Ruskin was an English writer, philosopher, art critic, and polymath of the Victorian era. Gillick competence refers to a child's capacity to consent to their own medical treatment without their parents or guardians having to know or give their consent. But in an era where we are always giving out our personal information through our digital footprint, does this measure for consent still hold water? And if it applies to healthcare, why doesn't it apply to other industries, like gaming? Join Alexander and Jason as they challenge today's norms on parenting, data collection, and a child's capacity to make informed decisions. Helicopter Parenting Human progress has reached a point where many of us are privileged to be living comfortable lives. However, this may have come at a cost: an increased aversion to taking risks, exploring freedom, and allowing independence. This extends to the way society believes parents should raise their children. Helicopter parenting, for the most part, does result in some short-term benefits. The constant surveillance means that children learn how to succeed in a closed environment. However, the reality is that parents won't always be there to enforce a strict routine and study schedule. At some point, children need to be given the opportunity to explore the world at their own pace. Empowering the Next Generation Gillick competence can be established if the minor can demonstrate that they have “sufficient understanding and intelligence to fully understand what is proposed.” With all the fearmongering and biased media we consume on a daily basis, it can be easy to think of the worst of humanity. Allowing children to live, for as long as they can, away from making big decisions for themselves may seem like the smarter and more loving choice. But the way children are treated in their youth will leave indelible marks on the people they grow into. If we want to help empower children and raise independent adults, we need to give them the space and grace to make big decisions for themselves. As discussed in this episode, children are a lot more capable than we give them credit for. And the innate human desire to do the right thing, backed by statistics, indicates that the world is not as scary as we think it is. Helicopter parenting only serves to isolate children and hinder their personal development. Is it really empowerment if they only know how to succeed in a vacuum? They examine the relevant provisions of the Family Law Act, including section 60H, and discuss the High Court case of Masson & Parsons, testing the principles of that case against various factual hypotheses and family configurations. They also ask the question, how many parents can a child have? A quirky but related point is considered, being the allocation of parental responsibility to children diagnosed with gender dysphoria who are also Gillick competent. All up, our commentators conclude that while Masson & Parsons gives certainty to the operation of section 60H and the definition of a “parent”, there are still unanswered questions and manifest scope for legislative reform to ensure that all Australian families are treated equally before the law.
There are numerous opportunities around the country to get educated on Parkinson's disease. There are books, videos, webinars, websites, and educational classes offered by clinics and outreach centers, as well as national foundations and organizations. It is very important to start your education very soon after diagnosis and continue to learn the rest of your life. Today, I want to highlight two not-for-profit groups offering free educational classes to the newly diagnosed but with a twist – how to advocate for yourself along with educating yourself throughout your life. This is an innovative approach and an important combination. It's the boxing equivalent to the one-two punch. Please keep listening.

If you are interested in Naomi's ideas you can follow her on twitter @naomilouistDuring our discussion, we try to define what is meant by co-production and practical steps which EP/TEPs can take to introduce co-production with children and young people into their practice. We discuss the values of the education system and whether it is ever compatible with the hopes and aspirations of the young people it educates. We conclude by trying to tackle a tough question from the TEP Facebook community about how to know when something has been truly collaborative and how to manage power dynamics in our work.Suggested ReadingOutcomes Peter Vermeulen (2016) Focusing on happiness and wellbeing: defining outcomes for autistic people https://t.co/QqU446hNfHParticipation and Co-productionHarding, E., & Atkinson, C. Liam Gillick. That is right, the man whose imagination can take him anywhere. A transparent master of the question of Modernity? Cat lover? Designer/author/theorist/artist/architect? The son Donald Judd never wanted? Enigma cloaked in riddle? Relational Aesthetic celebrity? All these things and more... We at Bad at Sports try and get to the bottom of Liam's magic in this hour-long interview. The last element in Liam Gillick's 4 part global retrospective, "Three perspectives and a short scenario" will run through January 10th at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. Accompanying that exhibition, Gillick has produced "The one hundred and sixty-third floor: Liam Gillick Curates the Collection," which is also be on view.Liam Gillick emerged in the early 1990s as part of a re-energized British art scene, producing a sophisticated body of work ranging from his signature "platform" sculptures -- architectural structures made of aluminum and colored Plexiglas that facilitate or complicate social interaction -- to wall paintings, text sculptures, and published texts that reflect on the increasing gap between utopian idealism and the actualities of the world. His work joins that of generational peers such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Philippe Parreno in defining what critic Nicholas Bourriaud described as "relational aesthetics," an approach that emphasizes the shifting social role and function of art at the turn of the millennium. Gillick's work has had a profound impact on a contemporary understanding of how art and architecture influence, and are themselves influenced by, interpersonal communication and interactions in the public sphere. This exhibition is presented in association with the Witte de With in Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Zurich, and the Kunstverein in Munich. It is the most significant and comprehensive exhibition of Gillick's work in an American museum to date, comprising a major site-specific installation in the gallery ceiling as well as a presentation of his design and published works, and a film documenting projects from the entirety of his career. The MCA is the only American venue for the exhibition.
