Bitterness, jealousy, and selfish ambition will put us at odds with God. #daybydaylw Interested in learning more about becoming a devoted follower of Christ? Go to follow.lifeword.org! ~~~ "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?" The men of Israel were jealous of the men of Judah, frustrated that they were not the first to bring King David back. Their selfish desires created division rather than unity. Conflict arises when personal ambitions outweigh devotion to the King. John Henderson, in Catching Foxes, describes this as spiritual adultery—loving the things of the world more than loving Christ. When we allow bitterness, jealousy, and selfish ambition to fester, we are choosing to be at odds with God rather than living in harmony with Him. So what is the solution? More Mephibosheth, more Barzillai. More humility, more contentment, more joy in simply being with the King. Unity in the church, in our homes, and in our friendships comes when our hearts are fully yielded to Christ—when honoring Him becomes our priority over our own desires. Are you yielding? Are you honoring? Or are you chasing selfish passions that divert your attention from the King? Prayer Focus: Ask God to reveal areas of selfishness in your heart. Pray for unity in your home, friendships, and church. Lift up Cristian & Vanessa Martinez, serving in Romania. Pray for the Aymara Lifeword broadcast in Peru & Bolivia. May our love for Jesus outweigh every other desire, bringing peace where conflict once ruled.

The first time I met Melanie, we were throwing marshmallows in each other's mouths at a Christmas party. There's really no better way to get introduced. I mean, what's a better way to gauge compatibility in a friendship than athletic marshmallow eating? In all seriousness, Melanie is one of the most gentle people I have ever met. She is so warm, comforting and encouraging. Yoel and Melanie joined our marriage group for a season in 2022, and their willingness to share their experiences propelled our group into such an intimate and supportive season. DescriptionIf we aren't teaching and preaching the gospel to change lives then what in the world are we doing? Right? But heres the thing, no one would likely suggest any other goal, but at the same time, also not know how to teach and preach in such a way that actually leads to life change. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy, and just saying that's what you are doing doesn't make it so, In my conversation today with Michael Gormley, aka Gomer, we set our sights on this very thing - how do we actually teach and preach so as to help people, who want to, change their lives. This conversation was a blast and as we get rolling we jump into the nitty gritty of exactly how this happens. Also, a big shout of thanks to Gomer and Ascension who generously offered to also release this interview on one of his podcasts, Every Knee Shall Bow. It'll be a bonus episode in that feed this week. Super cool! I'm so grateful. And to that end if you aren't listening to Every Knee Shall Bow, what are you doing? Catching Foxes podcast hosts Luke and Gomer - both college friends of Dr. Greg - recently interviewed him for their popular show and gave us permission to re-publish the conversation*. In this first part of their two-part long-form discussion, they zero in on some of the problems with modern therapy, discuss the importance of integrating faith into the practice of psychology, and look at the way that “parts work” can help.  *Mature Content   Discussed in this episode: What's missing from modern psychology?  The way that Cartesian dualism has influenced the field of psychology; The lack of a standard in mental health;  Dr. Greg's experience of experimenting with a new model of accompaniment; How a blueprint of the human person as outlined by JP2 can be used to approach psychological disorders; What happens when mental health struggles impact areas of our spiritual life? Spoiler review. Don't plan on watching the movie? Then you will still love this episode as we discuss the bigger themes, film, and the hero's journey. This review contains spoilers. The spoiler horn is sounded at the very beginning. If you have no interest in this movie, I think you will still get something out of this, especially the art of film and how Grunge still owns us in our late 30s and 40s. Now if you will excuse me, I have to plop in all of the ads and record a new one because Luke got sick and his voice is shot. Luke's Show Notes Matt Reeves Background * Older Gen X * Childhood friend on JJ Abrhams * Cloverfield director Why ‘Something in the Way' as the main thematic music? * Bridge, Kurt Cobain * “When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana's ‘Something In The Way,'” Reeves, 55, told Empire. “That's when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we've seen before, there's another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse.” * What's in the way? The Central Theme: the response to trauma and the obstacles of existence * Oh, you Gen Xers * Vengeance is carnal, hope is a choice “Our situation today shows that beauty demands for itself at least as much courage and decision as do truth and goodness, and she will not allow herself to be separated and banned from her two sisters without taking them along with herself in an act of mysterious vengeance.” - Han Urs von Balthasar In this regard, the teaching of Sacred Scripture is unequivocal. The Israelites were already encouraged to love one another: "You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself" (Lv 19: 18). At first this commandment seems restricted to the Israelites, but it nonetheless gradually takes on an ever broader sense to include the strangers who sojourn among them, in remembrance that Israel too was a stranger in the land of Egypt (cf. Lv 19: 34; Dt 10: 19). - John Paul II The world needs God. We need God. But what God do we need? In the first reading, the prophet tells a people suffering oppression that: "He will come with vengeance" (Is 35:4). We can easily suppose how the people imagined that vengeance. But the prophet himself goes on to reveal what it really is: the healing goodness of God. And the definitive explanation of the prophet's word is to be found in the one who died for us on the Cross: in Jesus, the Son of God incarnate, who here looks at us so closely. His "vengeance" is the Cross: a "No" to violence and a "love to the end". This is the God we need. - BXVI to German Bishops What does this movie say about modern society? * Gen Xer made good * Batman as a reflection * Director/Writer * Society * The Ringer- the end of the 80s

Besides a breakdown of Fr. Sam's fishing trip, we're talking about the desire for communion present in the human heart and all its different manifestations. We want Communion - the Eucharist. We want communion - to share the unity of faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. We want communion - to be part of a community. And yes, the brilliant podcasters over at Catching Foxes did in fact talk about this recently and you should listen to their take, too. Romans 12

Six Types of Working Genius and Ministry

The Working Genius Podcast by Patrick Lencioni. IDEATION Wonder Invention ACTIVATION Discernment Galvanizing IMPLEMENTATION Enablement Tenacity Notes -Luke killed a mouse, Gomer’s wife killed a scorpion, while Gomer was naked -Take Gomer to the Woodshed: Nonviolence and the violence in protests follow-up Gomer D.I.S.C. profile for staff, majority of which were “Stability” but the YM were “Innovative.” The YM is where you find the creatives and the envelope-pushers, but the rest of staff had the Stable personality, and so they hate change as a part of their personality. So you have a real reason why no one paints the walls or puts up beautiful artwork or challenges the status quo. Luke's experience of the “Catholic Creatives” working group where the culture screamed: New things are respected (and expected)! Remember, each of the six types of working genius are verbs, it’s who you are and what you do. This idea of the verb really opened Luke to the process of the Working Genius as a process. Looking at these different approaches, however, really helped Luke see where he was strongest and weakest, where my strengths were, and also how Catching Foxes came together. Also, we both suck at Tenacity! (thanks for keeping us alive, Kate.) A few examples: *Discernment: *Sometimes the hyper-spiritualizing of “all things” leads to false action. We think “God put this on my heart” but that doesn’t mean we don’t think through the problems, or MAYBE that's just our way of smuggling in our ideas in a religious context. I mean, who's going to question God's will for your ministry?! Galvanizing: We forget that we aren’t just speaking to the people in the pews, but to the staff! We need to galvanize the staff, inspire them, and move them. We need to minister to their needs in a way that gets them involved in a mission. Enablement: No more victims of unvoiced expectations, or worse, shifting unvoiced expectations! Enablement is not the same as letting someone do their job description, but training, working with, feedback, coaching, etc. Help them do the right thing- connect and cooperate. -Luke and I both suck at Tenacity! Michael Gormley's "That ONE Thing" parish mission is changing hearts and minds all over the country. Originally written for my his own parish, this mission has been adapted into numerous forms to meet the needs of different groups: the standard 3-day mission, a weekend retreat for high school students, a 1-day retreat for RCIA candidates, and more. This parish mission was inspired by SHERRY WEDDELL'S FORMING INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES in particular, the chapter dealing with repentance. A Greek Orthodox priest mentioned how he rarely preached or talked about repentance. I realized that I've never done that. I helped form and instruct people on how to make a good confession, but never really explicitly explored the area of helping people repent. Rooted and grounded in the endless mercy of God from the first talk, the second talk leads people into repentance by asking them one question: What is that one thing - sin, wound, label, or fear - that is keeping you from a better relationship with God. Pastors have been shocked at how deep confessions go after this portion. The final talk hones in on two things: how to stay free of that one thing, and how to get more involved in my faith.
