Tucked away in the rugged hills of northwestern Pennsylvania, Clear Creek State Forest offers a peaceful escape into one of the Commonwealth's most scenic and secluded natural areas.Spread across thousands of acres, this forest is a haven for nature lovers, where trails wind through towering hardwoods, crystal-clear streams carve their way through valleys and wildlife flourishes in every direction.Whether you're wandering through old-growth forests, casting a line in the Clarion River, or simply soaking in the stillness of the woods, Clear Creek invites you to slow down and reconnect with the wild beauty of Pennsylvania. One of the forest's most compelling features is its sense of solitude. Unlike some of the busier parks and forests in the state, Clear Creek often feels like a well-kept secret—offering quiet trails and remote backcountry campsites that let visitors truly immerse themselves in natureHikers can explore paths where they might stumble upon deer, wildflowers, or remnants of Pennsylvania's logging past. And in autumn, the forest puts on a breathtaking show of fiery reds, oranges, and golds that reflect off the water and blanket the hillsides. But really, every season is spectacular in Clear Creek State Forest. From kayaking and fishing to hunting and wildlife photography, there's no shortage of ways to experience the land. More than just beautiful scenery, Clear Creek State Forest is a place to reunite—with nature, with yourself, or with loved ones. For many, the real draw of Clear Creek lies in its unspoiled charm—a reminder that some of the best places in Pennsylvania are still those where the only sound is the wind through the trees and the rush of a mountain stream. It's the kind of place that reminds you why Pennsylvania is such a special place for outdoor recreation—a landscape shaped by time, preserved with care and waiting to be discovered. On this episode, I speak with Miles Valchar. Miles is the timber management and outdoor recreation forester at Clear Creek State Forest. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. Located along the Columbia River with majestic Mt. Hood as its backdrop, Hood River Distillers has been at its current bottling facility in Hood River since 1969. The company has expanded the plant for storage and made production line upgrades several times throughout the years. Although our core distribution began in the Pacific Northwest, we are currently producing close to one million cases per year, and distributing our products nationwide.HOOD RIVER DISTILLERS NAMES CAITLIN BARTLEMAY MASTER DISTILLERHood River Distillers, celebrating its 90th anniversary as the Pacific Northwest's largest and oldest distillery, is proud to announce the promotion of Caitlin Bartlemay to Master Distiller.Bartlemay joined Clear Creek Distillery in 2010 as a logistics coordinator and worked her way through the ranks to distiller. In 2014, Clear Creek was acquired by Hood River Distillers, joining the two oldest operating distilleries in Oregon, and returning Hood River Distillers to its original roots of creating fruit brandies. Bartlemay was named Head Distiller in 2021 and now oversees production of some twenty different distillates including McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt, the 1st American Single Malt; the award-winning Timberline Vodka; and the renowned Clear Creek brandies and eaux de vie.Bartlemay grew up as a hard-working wheat rancher in Eastern Oregon. Her father started a winery when she was in middle school, and she became fascinated by the science of fermentation. She studied Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University  earning her bachelor's degree in 2010. During her last semester of college, Bartlemay sent letters to every distillery across the Pacific Northwest  (at that time there were only 12) inquiring about job opportunities. Steve McCarthy, owner of Clear Creek Distillery, never told her to stop calling, so she didn't. She started work there the week after graduation.“Caitlin's vigilant commitment to excellence in every facet of her job is one of the qualities that has made her such an exceptional member of our team,” said David Ballew, President and CEO, Hood River Distillers. “Her passion for quality and craftsmanship is evident in each product that she touches. It's only fitting that as we celebrate our 90th anniversary, we recognize Caitlin for her leadership in helping Hood River Distillers and its brands continue their heritage of quality in the Pacific Northwest.”“It has been a thrill to be a part of the Clear Creek/Hood River Distillers team and to have had the opportunity to share so many wonderful brands with our customers,” said Bartlemay. “The history of distillation at both Clear Creek Distillery and Hood River Distillers is one that combines pioneering personalities, exceptional products, and phenomenal teamwork. Whether we are continuing the legacy of the first American Single Malt, bottling spirits distilled from the bounty of the Pacific Northwest or creating new custom flavors to celebrate innovation in the whiskey category, I'm proud to lead this next generation of distillers.”

Mike Burke, Director and VP of Corporate Development at Sitka Gold (TSX.V:SIG - OTCQB:SITKF - FRE:1RF) joins me to recap the recent acquisition of the Clear Creek Project, from Victoria Gold, which consolidates the RC Gold Project, in the Yukon.    We begin by discussing the strategic importance of combining the Clear Creek Project with the RC Gold Project. We cover the historical exploration work done at Clear Creek, including drilling results from Golden Predator's previous programs, and discuss how this acquisition enhances Sitka Gold's potential for new discoveries. We outline the transaction terms, including share issuance and future payments, as well as plans for immediate exploration and drilling.    We then discuss the ongoing 15,000 meter drill program at the RC Project with the goal to expand on the over 1.3million ounce gold inferred resource estimate that was released in January 2023.  If you have any follow up questions for Mike please email me at Fleck@kereport.com.   Click here to visit the Sitka Gold website to learn more about the Company.

Clear Creek was founded by Steve McCarthy in 1985, first to produce fruit brandies and later (starting in the '90s) a peated single malt that paid homage to his newfound love of Islay Scotch.  Today, McCarthy's (which, though a brand, is the name by which many would call the family of distilleries) is a leading voice in American Single Malt and one of the OG producers. How do breakout brands, particularly those that operate in trendy categories, build sustainable businesses? They cultivate authentic relationships with consumers by delivering on attributes they're seeking. It's how Wilderton, a maker of small-batch, non-alcoholic spirits crafted from raw botanicals, is paving its path. Founded by Oregon craft spirits veterans Brad Whiting and Seth O'Malley, Wilderton launched in December 2020. The company markets three signature expressions that are distilled using globally sourced wild plants. The products boast the complexity and experience of a traditional spirit yet without alcohol.  As sober curious lifestyles take hold in parts of the U.S., Wilderton has emphasized its distinctive ingredients and innovative distillation methods, an approach that is consistently winning over both teetotallers and spirit consumers seeking a high quality alcohol alternative. In this episode, Whiting and O'Malley spoke about their interest in non-alcoholic spirits, how they view Wilderton as differentiated from similarly positioned brands, why taste is key when communicating product attributes and how to support, if not champion, other companies within the emerging category. Show notes: 0:43: Interview: Brad Whiting & Seth O'Malley, Co-Founders, Wilderton – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif met with Whiting and O'Malley at the 2023 Tales of the Cocktail convention where they spoke about Wilderton's new distillery and tasting room in Hood River, Oregon, their respective backgrounds in the spirits industry and why distilling non-alcoholic beverages isn't as complicated as it might sound. They also explained why they developed Wilderton to be an option for a variety of consumers, why they don't  create analogs of traditional spirits and how they educate the trade about how to use and promote the products. Later, they spoke about growing competition within the emerging segment of non-alcoholic spirits and shared their perspective on partnerships with strategic firms and legacy beverage alcohol companies. Brands in this episode: Wilderton, Pendleton Whisky, Clear Creek, Big Gin, Hood River Distillers, Seedlip, Athletic Brewing Co.
