This week, Chris and Ethan are joined once again by actor Patrick Warburton, and they welcome actor, writer, and producer Scott Crane to the show. Together, the four go back in time as Scott discusses his upbringing on Bainbridge Island in Washington, his friendships with Andrew and Kevin Wood, Ben Shepherd, Jack Endino, Chad Channing, and the island's role in giving birth to the distinctive sound that would become known as "grunge." Listen along and learn of the pivotal role of Greg Gunther in the creation of that sound and scene, and hear about Patrick's familial connection to the birth of "grunge."
On this day in 1989, NIRVANA released their debut album Bleach! Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl (who would replace Bleach drummer Chad Channing) would of course change the musical landscape just a couple of years later with the release of Nevermind. With me to share their thoughts and feelings about this release are Bethanne and Leah from the She Will Rock You podcast!

The album that would bring grunge into the mainstream is Nevermind by Nirvana. While it was Nirvana's second album, it would be their first on a major label. It would also see the introduction of Dave Grohl to the band as drummer joining Krist Novoselic on bass, and the iconic and troubled Kurt Cobain who was front man, guitarist, and songwriter for the band.“Troubled” could be a good description of the album as well. While more polished than their debut album, the songs exhibit a raw emotion, often dark, disturbed, or alienated, but also containing some humor and self-deprecation. The tracks were more melodic than the first album as well, reflecting Cobain's influences - he was listening to groups like the Pixies and R.E.M. at the time that Nevermind was being recorded. The album was a surprising success both commercially and critically. It was nominated for three Grammy awards across two awards ceremonies. It hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 list in the U.S., hit number 2 on the Australian charts, and number 7 on the British charts.Nevermind was released in September 1991, and friend of the show John Lynch is featuring it as our album pick for January 1992 when it was on top of the charts, knocking off Michael Jackson's Dangerous. LithiumLithium is a drug used to fight depression and bi-polar disorder. The lyrics discuss a person trying to fight loss of relationships, wide mood swings and feelings, deciding that he needs to find God before he kills himself. The alteration between soft and loud sections would become known as emblematic of Nirvana's sound. PollyThis dark song was inspired by the abduction, torture, and rape of a 14 year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington. She escaped from her kidnapper at a gas station. Cobain wrote the lyrics from the perspective of the perpetrator. Former percussionist Chad Channing is the drummer on this piece.Something in the WayThis song was inspired by a four-month period of homelessness that Cobain experienced around his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. It is one of the few autobiographical songs Cobain wrote, as he more typically wrote lyrics inspired in stores from others. It is featured in the 2022 film, “The Batman.” Come As You AreThis hit single almost resulted in a lawsuit from a band called “The Killing Joke” which had a very similar chord structure. The lyrics are about the expectations people put on themselves and others, and it encourages people to be themselves. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy series “In Living Color”This comedy variety production from the Wayan brothers would introduce the world to sketches “Men on Film, “Homey the Clown,” and “Fire Marshal Bill” which launched Jim Carrey's career. STAFF PICKS:There's No Other Way by BlurWayne starts us off with London based Blur exhibiting the “Manchester” sound. The song lyrics highlight the irritation the band felt at having to follow the Manchester trend at the behest of the record company. “You've taken the fun out of everything.” This song was Kurt Cobain's favorite song of the year from Britain.Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by George Michael and Elton JohnRob brings us George Michael's live cover of Elton John's 1974 hit. John joins Michael on stage in the second half of the song during this performance in Chicago. They had originally performed the duet for Live Aid, and Michael liked it so much that he incorporated the cover into his show. The original version made it to number 2 in the U.S., and this cover made it to number 1.Diamonds and Pearls by Prince and the New Power GenerationBrian's staff pick is a love song. It is also the title track to Prince's album with the backing band which was originally named on the 1990 film “Graffiti Bridge.” The female voice in this song is performed by Rosie Gaines, who tragically suffered from an insulin overdose in 2009, and has experienced a number of diabetic issues over time.No Son of Mine by GenesisJohn Lynch features the final Genesis album with Phil Collins as lead singer, "We Can't Dance." The lyrics discuss domestic violence. It is about a man who is a monster to his family. The song describes a child who runs away from an abusive family situation, and is rejected by his father when he attempts reconciliation later on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:New Recruit by Eric ClaptonThis instrumental track is from the motion picture "Rush."

Beginning our SIXTH band's full studio album discography review, we've decided to head to the Pacific Northwest to cover one of, if not THE, most influential grunge bands of all time... NIRVANA. A band that, prior to recording this episode, seemed to be split fanwise amongst the Light the Sky team (has Mark mentioned that he's not a fan of 90s music yet?) We're looking forward to digesting Nirvana's story and their recorded studio album output (sorry, no live albums or compilation albums right now) to see if they deserve the legendary status that they hold today.Episode 67 covers Nirvana's first full length studio album, 1989's Bleach (FYI we're only covering the initial 11 track 1st press LP track listing). Bleach had sold 40,000 copies in North America before the release of Nevermind. It has since been certified platinum by the RIAA and has sold more than 1.9 million copies in the United States alone.[12] It is Sub Pop's best-selling album to date and is unlikely to be surpassed by competitors.[13] Frontman Kurt Cobain's death in April 1994 also led to a resurgence in the album's popularity, reaching number one on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart.[14] In April 2019, Bleach was ranked No. 13 on Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest Grunge Albums list. Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. We go on a deep dive track-by-track listen of this album as well as share personal stories of discovering Nirvana's Bleach. Tune in next week for Episode 68 where we cover Nirvana's second, and landmark studio album, Nevermind,Available at https://lightthesky.net/podcasts/nirvana/bleach/ and on all podcast streaming platforms (just search "Light the Sky Podcast.")Follow "Light the Sky Podcast" on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to stay up-to-date with all things LTS.LTS Website: https://lightthesky.net/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lighttheskypodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LighttheSkyPod1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LightTheSkyPodcast/Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/lightthesky

NWP welcomes Chad Channing and his new band Before Cars Yes, much like The Beatles has Pete Best, unbeknown to many, Nirvana has Chad Channing. Channing drummed for Nirvana during the recording of their debut record, Bleach. But then, following alleged frustrations over the band’s songwriting process, Channing decided to walk away, giving way to the incomparable Dave Grohl. Yes, Chad Channing walked away from a band that would later go on to define an entire generation. And even though he did play drums on the band’s debut album, it’s just not enough to land Channing an induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Nirvana will rightly be inducted into the hall — it’s the first year they’re eligible — on April 10 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, US. Apparently bassist Krist Novoselic lobbied for Channing to be inducted alongside himself, Grohl and Kurt Cobain, but that prodding wasn’t enough. Now Chad as a new hot band "Before Cars" and this time around, he is right where he wants to be! http://londontonemusic.com http://northwestprime.com https://www.facebook.com/pages/Before-Cars/108320485542
My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. You can find the podcast archives there. Find my books of rock and roll fiction on Amazon by searching my name, Matt Syverson. Follow me on Twitter @PaperbackRocker. Email me at PaperbackRocker@live.com. Thanks for listening! The show notes are as follows: The show is almost out of the teen years and hopefully knows what it wants to be when it grows up. There has been a learning curve/evolution going on, and I have come to the conclusion that doing a minimally edited, shoot-from-the-hip show is best for me. Doing my early thirty minute shows took about five hours or so, which I outline for you. I can't keep doing that, so I'm just recording straight through without editing unless something major happens. I discuss the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and how stupid they do things. They want to put bands in, but not all the members. For example, Nirvana's drummer from the "Bleach" era, Chad Channing, is not going to be in. Only the lineup from "Nevermind" has been invited. That's BS, because being the drummer for Nirvana was a lot harder in the "Bleach" days than in the "Nevermind" days. "Bleach" was raw music before the band was radio ready. I talk about flannel shirts and what my father and I called them, as well as some anecdotes about my exploratory journey to Seattle. I also talk about getting tattoos, which until recently were illegal to get in Oklahoma. When I was 18, I went to Wichita Falls and got a terrible tattoo. I tell some tattoo stories about good and bad decisions. I talk about the writing program, Scrivener, as well as the Word template I usually writer in. It's hard to write on an 8.5 x 11 virtual sheet of paper, because so many words fit on the page. Next, I talk about Patty Schemel, drummer for Hole and childhood friend of my ex-wife. There is a documentary about her on Netflix called, "Hits So Hard". She left Hole during the recording of "Celebrity Skin", mainly due to the jerk producer they had. She has conquered addiction and has a dog-walking business now. I talk about how Mark Lanegan almost threw the master tapes from his solo album in a lake. Hope you enjoyed this shoot-from-the-hip episode!
