This week on Brazen Presents, we're bringing you an episode from the investigative podcast Motive from WBEZ Chicago. Chicago gangs: Real people. Real stories. A way forward. The new season of Motive from WBEZ Chicago explores violence on the streets of Chicago and the former gang members working to stop it. In episode 1, host Patrick Smith and Cecilia Mannion, takes listeners out to the streets where workers are desperately trying to prevent shootings and help the victims of gun violence. Millions of hostile rivalries exist between groups worldwide, but their conflicts rarely escalate to protracted violence. Because would-be combatants know that all-out conflict usually proves immensely costly to all sides, they regularly find ways to avoid open warfare. And when it comes to international affairs in particular, we tend to focus on the wars that do occur at the expense of internalizing the core truth that, most of the time, they simply don't happen.Political scientist and economist Christopher Blattman has a fresh take on these big issues of war and peace. He argues for sustained attention not only to the mechanisms by which conflict wins out over compromise but also to the remedies that routinely shift incentives away from protracted violence and get rivals back to deal-making. His research has put him in the room with street gang leaders and African dictators, British football hooligans and drug kingpins--experiences that combine with his insights from political science, economics, and psychology in his new book, Why We Fight: The Roots of War and the Paths to Peace.David Priess hosts this long and fascinating conversation with Blattman about his hands-on field work, his framework for understanding why groups do and do not choose violence, and what it all means for practical efforts at conflict avoidance and resolution. Along the way, they find their way from the Godfather films to game theory to the U.S. wars with Iraq--and, most of all, they relate much of it to the current war between Russia and Ukraine.Chatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo. As Chicago's gang violence spirals out of control, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is coming up with a new plan to fight back.Lightfoot wants to hold the gangs accountable by allowing the city to sue the very people who are pulling the trigger.Authorities want to take away the guns, cars, jewelry and money from gangs to eliminate their profit motive.Lightfoot is introducing an ordinance on Tuesday that will allow the city to sue gangs for the damage they inflict and seize their assets, the objects of ill-gotten gains.Join your host Sean Reynolds, owner of Summit Properties NW, and Reynolds & Kline Appraisal as he takes a look at this developing topic.https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/mayor-lori-lightfoot-wants-to-sue-chicago-gangs-seize-their-assetsSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/seattlerealestatepodcast)

Mark's longtime affiliate Jig Dolla joins the show to discuss what's going on in Chicago, why gangs are unfairly demonized (and often not gangs at all,) my first DMT trip, and a whole lot more. He's written some hits you know, but I couldn't get him to spill any tea. We finish the episode with a song I put together with Jig, GLC, & Sun. This was at the height of the G.O.O.D. Music era and it got some attention. The song has always been one of my personal favorites.

Checking the pulse of Chicago gangs and violence 2016 will be Chicago's most violent year in two decades. Chicago Gangs and Violence are at the center of this escalation. Why talk about this here? Well, my job is to help protect people in all walks of life, no matter their circumstances. What got me is that in my research I have found so many victims of this violence are little kids. I can't take that. Chicago is one of this nations great cities and I hate seeing its people living in a constant state of fear. They are being done a disservice from the rest of us if we stand by and simply ignore their plight. Kids learning to hit the deck when they hear anything loud outside, to not stand by windows. The article is linked below so you can read the specifics for yourself. Chicago had more than 700 murders in 2016, more than in New York City and Los Angeles combined. Source: Why 2016 Has Been Chicago's Bloodiest Year in Almost Two Decades Looking at How We Got Here While most of us live in mostly safe homes not everyone does. Can you imagine the possibility of gun shots at any moment outside your home? To top it off, not being able to know who you can trust at all to help? Right or wrong, this is the reality that is Chicago. So, how did we get here? Some really bad actions by some members of the Chicago police force Knee jerk reaction from the cities leadership in how the police can even interact with the public A bizarre twist of cleaning up the gang leadership unleashed more gang violence The rampant war of words on social media Defunding social workers involved in the direct communities These are the main topics that the news story covered. Part of the conversation is to look at how the police on the line are being effected. “I tell them, ‘Be careful. Don't be so aggressive out there. Think of your family before you go out there and do something,'” the detective says as he finishes his salad, laying out the advice he gives officers under his command. “Policing has changed. If you don't change with it, you're going to lose your job.” What COULD be done going forward No one has a magic wand to wave that will fix any of this. What is being put out next is only my opinion, but I think it is on the right track. Fix the police. Encourage "self policing", honor and pride, and release them to actually do their job. No more, no less. Deal with the root of the Gang problem. Lack of strong fathers and families. Houses of worship, go do the real work Community and pride In summary this is just a small look at how to start. This can also be a wakeup call to other cities and communities to pay attention and never let things go to this level. I start off by quoting the recent Chicago shooting stats. This is really bad because Chicago has had more shootings this year than New York and Los Angeles combined! I thought—when I heard this—that the news anchor was comparing Chicago to the whole state of New York because the state of New York is much bigger than Chicago and Los Angeles. However, Chicago has had more shootings than the whole state of New York! This is unbelievable and we have to stop looking at the wrong things. I challenge our city's leaders by asking some really provocative questions and offer a "conspiracy theory" of my own.
This is the second in the series of Chicago Gun Violence Survivors Speak Out. In this episode, I talk about what should happen next after being shot. I speak about what else should be covered after being shot. I have a lot to talk about, so I would subscribe to this podcast. Thanks!
Welcome to the Chicago Gun Violence Survivors Speak Out. I am happy you are here and hope that you remember to visit often. I was a victim of Chicago gun violence, but now I'm a survivor. I just found out—24 years after the fact—that I have PTSD. Yes, it is related to my being shot and I just gained the courage to tell my story. I've never done a podcast before. I want to apologize for the dog barking in the background. Life is loud in the City and I do think that this extra noise adds character.
