    What Can You Do?

Child Sexual Trafficking and Predation What can You Do about any of this? My wife brought up the topic with me this week. She is on a Facebook group for moms that has been posting relentlessly on the topics. When she brought it up to me, she asked about a point of reference about teaching people about something without making them feel totally overwhelmed. When I asked her about it, she said the admins basically posted all the tragic and bad news, but never put out any information about what a family could d or give any direction of hope. Right. So, my next question was, " so what is your takeaway from all this?" My wife elaborated very simply. She felt completely helpless. None of the information being put out gave any hope. Nothing was said about what a mom, dad or family could do to protect their family from this very evil threat. This is very similar to other security situations we have dealt with in our consulting and classroom portions. When people are only presented the "problem", they have no where to go in their mind. An overload of bad situation/bad news basically turns the audience to helplessness. At that point, they tune out. They want nothing to do with getting any further information about whatever the "problem" is. They feel completely helpless, so all they have is the hope that it never happens to them. Because in their mind, they probably won't survive anyway... So, in this podcast episode we talk about your question: What can you do? It is a very valid question, and we will give you a good baseline understanding of the issue and some real steps to take. I hate leaving people without hope, a plan or even basic understanding of what to do. So, what can you do? This. Understand the issues. What is the difference between child sexual trafficking and childhood sexual predation Trafficking is where the potential for a true stranger is more possible Predation is almost always men, and almost always someone you and your family know very well What is grooming, who is the focus on, and what can it look like Legal recourse, and why these cases are usually not convicted After a basic understanding, we cover: Speaking to your children Start earlier than you think Use age appropriate concepts Don't treat your kids like they are dumb Create the space where your own children feel comfortable talking to you. Earn and keep their trust Don't fall in to the faith "bubble" trap Do not pretend that if you don't talk about something, it isn't real You need to be highly involved with your kids Be present in activities, like sports, classes, events and such NO sleepovers, ever are allowed Pay attention to the people in your children's lives Talk to your kids regularly. Make this a habit and they will truly learn to trust you. Let them know that they can tell you anything. And, if something has ALREADY happened to them? Make sure they know it is not their fault. Economic downturn, fears of recession and huge amounts of people out of work are causing serious problems. What can you do about it? And has it already affected you? I say, you can do much, and yes. It has already affected you. Coronavirus is still a thing. As a result, we are seeing real economic downturn in the U.S. and the World right now. It has already taken its toll on people out of work with those numbers looking like 40 million right now. Economists are saying we are already in the beginning of a recession. Have you been effected personally? If you haven't, I bet you know someone who has. And this economic downturn is not finished. Fears of a full blown recession are rumbling. In this episode we talk about the cascading effects of this recession. What can you and others do? Do you have options available to you? Can you do anything before job loss hits you? Also, the Seattle City Council has taken away Police Officers less than lethal options during the protests. I did a video yesterday that you can watch by clicking here. Related to this is the defunding and threat of abolishing police departments. How can this effect other areas of life during the economic downturn and recession? How about the truck drivers threatening to not deliver to cities and towns that have defunded their police? We play the if this___ then___ game! It is a handy dandy practice that you can adopt. With all this going on, we end on a high note. We look at Mr. Hutchison, the Black Lives Matter(BLM) protester in London England. He say another man (white man opposing side) get hit and knocked down. Mr. Hutchison's actions surely saved this mans life as well as diffused worse violence. An active shooter was also avoided. Sargent Major Royer did what he says anyone would have done. He saw a man shooting other people. Sargent Major Royer hit him with his truck! Listen in for this story and all the rest! We want you to survive. I hope you learn something from this. Thank you for listening!

Pain of Predation Thoughts and Wrap Up

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 7, 2018 14:16

The Pain of Predation Is Too Much For Us This series has not been easy. Or really even that fun. No one like to think about the subject and victims. Neither do I. That said, one of my biggest takeaways is that this is possibly the most untold story that exists. Regularly brushed under the table. While I suppose I understand the reasons why, it is a real failure on our part as a whole. The consequences that the victims carry and pass on are laid at our collective feet. What do I mean? Just this, one is too many. I am a dad, so I carry a very specific burden of perspective on these types of crimes. Even the terminology gets under my skin. Tragedy - crime - whatever we choose to describe this is not sufficient. It does not hurt us enough. At least not enough to spurn us to unified action, does it? I was all ready to record this with a few more recent news stories, but this turned in to the most important part of the conversation. What can we really take away from this series? It is not about what we learn, but what we decide to do. Are You Responsible for this Pain of Predation That is the crux of this conversation. These stories and interviews show us the all too regular commonalities that take place. Summing it up in one word? Deception. Secretive manipulation. Control and fear. They all are summed up in the deception. If the entire goal is to get away with these heinous and evil deeds, who is it against? The victims is the obvious answer, but what about you and I? Do you enjoy the notion of being lied to, manipulated, controlled, deceived? I know that I don't. Ok, some push back, right? I can hear it know. But, I didn't know them! Wait, they weren't my kids.. It was just a stranger. Even me saying it, these sound weaker by the second, right? If not, let's assume a little bit of self preservation thick headedness... These are people, not matter what. Just like the ones in your life who are important to you. Even the strangers deserve a life unmolested. They deserve better. If it were someone that I know, I surely hope that I could pay enough attention to the signs and situation to prevent or stop it. And if it were a stranger, like you or someone that is important to you, same thing. Right? Preventing this Pain of Predation What do do then? Before you think I am on this high horse and arrogantly thinking that all can be saved, please don't. I know better. That is the power of deception. No one of us is immune to it. Not you or me. No one. Some of these individuals have perfected their craft to the point that they are the perfect appearance of whatever they want the world to see them as. What to do then, chain the doors and bar the windows? That goes against everything this show is about, and you know it. We never want anyone to live in fear or allow fear to control their life. Not even you. Decide. Decide to do something, if at all you can. Look, pay attention, allow your mind to go to the places that you would rather not think about. Consider that those dark things could exist. Look for them. Watch behavior. Ask questions when you can. Become an advocate for those who need it most. Also, count the cost. It is no small thing to put yourself out for another human being. Whether it is a loved one, or not, there can be consequences. You could become a target yourself. Possibly you could be involved legally, or with a child's school or family. Social blowback is a real risk. At the end of the day though, you can save a life. The Problem of Human Trafficking and Slavery Human trafficking and slavery are not a problem of history. They are a modern day epidemic. Men, women and children are targets every day allover the world, even in your community, no matter where you live. This is your problem as well as mine. This is the fourth installment of our Predation Series.Although most people listening to this have a historical understanding or slavery, most don't realize its current state. In this episode we meet Elizabeth K. Elizabeth is an RN who dedicates her free time to educating herself and others on the epidemic of human trafficking and slavery. This interview takes us through an astonishing and subversive world of abuse and violence that leads to control, manipulation and slavery. Elizabeth shares her story to help others become educated and empowered. Human Trafficking and Slavery: In the Shadows First of all speaking with Elizabeth, she tells us of a conference she attended. The Second Annual Symposium Presented by the San Diego Commission on the Status of Women and Girls: Combating Domestic Violence, Homelessness, and Human Trafficking. As a result, the conference lit her passion to help those trapped in this destructive world. As a healthcare provider she was shocked to realize that possibly 50% or more of these victims encounter a health care worker at some point. Since the probability of encounter is high in health care, Elizabeth is taking action to help educate her peers. The process with human trafficking and slavery is all too familiar. Physical abuse which leads to Homelessness as the victim desires escape Bad choices of drugs and environment to transition to a better direction Control and deception by predators actively looking for someone is this predicament Manipulation and enslavement once they are under their control Not in My Neighborhood, Right? While many will shake their heads at the tragedy of these situation, too many think it can't happen to anyone they know. If this is you, you are wrong. These situations cross all income and demographic boundaries. Human trafficking and slavery have no favorites or boundaries. Abuse, control and runaways happen where you live. Also, technology, social media and the internet make this kind of control easier. So then, what can we do? Stay alert. Pay attention to the people in your life. Even the "adults" that may be out of the home already. How does this or that person sound? Has something changed in their demeanor? Will a normally open person change and become quiet? Has hiding things and whispering become a norm? Don't simply brush off these signs. Talk to them. Find out what is really going on. Let them know that there is help. It finally happened. A terrorist attack using a vehicle to injure and kill people happened here in the United States. This Manhattan terrorist vehicle attack is the first of its kind here. I just watched the NYPD Briefing from yesterday afternoon 2 hours after the event. NYPD dealt swiftly with this incident, and CONTINUED business as usual for the Halloween Parade. They emphasized heightened security, heavy weapons teams and resources to guard the parade. Let's be very clear. This is a warning to anyone who is thinking to exploit a situation. The reporters asked the Commissioner many questions. As expected, these questions were handled quickly with most being too soon to answer or know. The most important part of this message came at the end. The NYPD told New York to continue business as usual. New Yorkers will not be deterred is the clear message. As a result, we agree completely. Our Analysis and Feedback Terrorism is a constant danger in the world. Like I already said, I do not enjoy being right about these types of things. We have already covered other vehicle attacks on this show. If you want the latest information on the individual and circumstances surrounding this, feel free to turn on the news. Covering those aspects is not what this show is about. We may look at it later for a case study of terrorism, just not today. So then, what are we going to look at with this? Luck is when you look down and see a quarter on the ground. If not lucky, what then? She is a woman who has taken responsibility for her awareness and preparation. On Sunday March 5th, Kelly Herron was on a training run for an upcoming marathon. This was a Sunday afternoon, around 1 PM. A typical day in the park. Around mile four she stopped in a public restroom to use it and then wash her hands. When she turned around, she was face to face with convicted sex offender Gary Steiner. Steiner, 40, is classified by the Clark County Sheriff's office as a Transient Level III Sex Offender, or the level most likely to reoffend Steiner immediately shoved Kelly to the ground and got behind her. The fight for her life was on. From Momentary Confusion to Not Today Mother Fucker! As you listen to this interview, Kelly's fight will hit you hard. Barbie VS Walking Dead In this latest episode in the predation series we hit it hard. I interview DJ Phalen. We discuss the importance of putting out real information and not sugar coating things. Far too often we see people avoiding or glossing over difficult topics and situations. This does such a great disservice to the people who may need this information the most. What in the world do we mean by this contrast? Barbie VS the Walking Dead is the story DJ uses to convey what is important compared to things that are possibly detrimental. Hard discussions must take place. How you speak to the people in your life can save theirs. Although not easy, these talks become the most important. Protect them from Predation Two phrases come to my mind. When you speak the truth, have one foot in the stirrup - Old Cowboy Saying The second is this Better to be slapped with the truth than kissed with a lie - Unknown While speaking the truth may not be popular, keeping this you care about alive and unharmed should be. Predation by its very nature is devious. Deception can only be overcome with the truth. The damage that a sexual deviant predator inflicts is far worse than any conversation you can have. Do not leave people in the dark. Some of the things covered in this episode: Why to chuck Barbie movies in the trash The importance of watching the Walking Dead to raising young women (and men) How to deal with the neighborhood class three sexual predator Discussions to have when going to public places And more This is hands down one of our best episodes. Sexual Predators and Pediphiles: Protecting Our Children Part 1

Sexual Predators and Pediphiles We begin or series on Sexual Predators and Pediphiles today. This series has been in the works for some time now. We switch gears from focusing on physical danger to a much more intimate and even dangerous kind. Sexual violence and long lasting mental trauma of children. We are going to thank Facebook for giving us the lauchpad for this episode. Last week I saw a Facebook re-post from a mother in Colorado. She was shopping in a Ross clothing store and claimed that three men were following her and her children around the store. She gave the store clerk a message about it, called 911 and was escorted out of the store with store security. The story according to store employees and sherif has been blown out of proportion.  They claim that the woman and her children were never in danger and the men were simply shopping. Within two days this story has been shared over 50,000 time. This tells us so much about parents state of fear This also tells us how absolutely uninformed most people are about real predation. Fifty thousand plus shares in two days. While this is an obvious hot button topic, parents deserve to know what the truth is about sexual predators and pediphiles. By the way, I know that pediphiles should be spelled pedophiles. The internet shows that most people misspell the word. I just want you to find this. We all want the best for our children. Since this is true, all are responsible to know the truth. The real threat to our children is much closer than most of us realize. When we perpetuate our ignorance willingly, be ready to shoulder the responsibility. Let us be clear, do not sacrifice your children to your "better judgement" or the possibility of stirring the proverbial pot. They do not deserve this and regret is a real bitch. No one wants them or you to live with the effects of missing the signs. Where does the real threat come from? Although many parents shared the Facebook story most likely your kiddos will not be snatched up by strangers. Especially not in public with you present. Kidnappers prey upon the fringes. Runaways and homeless children are the preferred targets for these evil and sick individuals. The real threat is much closer to home than many parents want to consider. The majority of child sexual predation come from a well known neighbor, family friend or a family member One in three girls as well as one in six boys will be subject to sexual contact from an adult Heterosexual men are by far the number one sexual predators and pediphiles The most common age sexual abuse begins is age three The Department of Justice estimates there is one child molester per square mile in the US On average a child molester has fifty to one hundred fifty victims before they are arrested What can you do? If you are a parent, pay attention to your children. Listen to them and watch for changes in their behavior. Freedom and You

The Reality of Freedom Freedom. Let's define terms. Freedom is the ability to move or respond as well as the capacity to not only understand what options are available but to also act on them if needed. I like this definition because I came up with it It works across almost all rationales for the function of freedom Freedom is an important aspect of the country you and I live in, if you are in the USA as I am. Said freedom is also the cornerstone of what my company protects in training safety and security. This episode is one we have mulled about for a while. The importance of putting this out is fundamental in grasping what freedom means for you. It is your freedom to figure out. So, here we go. The Physical Personal freedom is where we have to begin. Everything else is affected by how we view this in our personal life. Let's get to the gist of this. Today is July 4, 2017. I am recording this with my family well fed, a bit sunburned and relatively happy in the next room. We walked down and watched our small town parade and enjoyed a day with neighbors and friends. In America, this is the day most of us celebrate our freedom and this nations inception. No matter where you land on the political and idealogical spectrum, America is the bastion of freedom in the world. This dialed in my thought process for this episode. Allow me to explain. We began our thought process like this. What does it really take to survive? Having options. What does having options look tike? Movement equals life movement is freedom freedom allows movement Life is freedom If you are not free, you are either dead or in the process of dying See? Big concept for such a simple podcast on safety and security. What am I getting at? Let's look at your physical self. If you sit there and do nothing, your body will begin to stop working the way it should. Recent studies even show that sitting is worse for you than smoking. We are made to move. If you inhibit movement then you will stop functioning the way you are supposed to. If you sop moving your ability to react when you need to will suffer. When you can't react when you really need to, you'll probably die. If to live means to move, and movement equals life then you have to move. Perception and Psyche The same with how you think and what you do with it. What we spend our time, energy and effort on becomes our focus. A lot of people look at phones and our connectivity in a bad light. As in, people are more disconnected and unaware. Disconnected from reality so to speak. Put simply, focused on mostly time wasting and the unimportant. Move your mind and take back your focus, your energy and your effort. A life of Freedom Here is what got this proverbial ball rolling. Most people are checked out in some way or another. We protect people and teach because, well, we love people. If this is a truth for us, then not attempting to do what we can to effect the status quo is unacceptable. Too many of us are asleep at our own wheel. If we love people and want to do our best teaching real awareness and effective response, then we must do more. Let's look at this a different way. We humans are so amazingly capable. We can rise to incredible heights in our abilities, if choose to. If you are not aware and moving, you are dying. We want you to live, and live abundantly! Purpose To be truly free is to have a purpose. A life of avoidance and escape is the opposite of this. This is one thing that we cannot find for you. We can however explain a bit of ours an an example. Husbands to our wives. Love and serve her first, to my best ability. Fatherhood and family. They are our joy and honor to love, teach, guide and protect. If we are incapable of acting, thinking clearly and doing what needs to be done, we have failed them. Faith. Everyone has a faith whether you call it that or not. We recognize and understand our relationship with our Creator.

North Park Elementary Shooting It is a parents worst nightmare. The North Park Elementary shooting is the latest shooting to cause parents hearts to come out of their chest. Here is what we know. An individual (male I believe) entered the elementary school and checked in with the front desk before going to the targeted classroom. At this point until we get the full story, is speculation. It appears the individual was armed, and was motivated to perform a murder suicide. He was successful. (He) murdered an adult female, and somehow two students were injured. The individual took (his) own life at that point. The police did an outstanding job in responding. Their on site reaction time was four minutes. Again, and they will tell you the same- they are reactionary. We know that one student was flown by helicopter to a hospital, the other taken by ambulance. The rest of the students have been transported to a "safer" area and are being reunited with their families. Two adults died in a shooting Monday in a classroom at San Bernardino, California's North Park Elementary School, in what is believed to be a murder-suicide, San Bernardino police said. Source: San Bernardino shooting: 2 dead in murder-suicide, police say - CNN.com First look and Analysis Before my first child was born, a close family friend told me this. " Know this. When you have kids, a part of your heart is forever outside of you." At this point I must say, spot on. Our prayers go out to all families affected by this event. This appears at first sniff to be a "shooting of passion". Relationship gone really bad. The worst part of this is it spilled over and resulted in death and injury. At an elementary school. This highlights the ongoing issue of how we must take a fresh look at keeping our children and educators safe. It is our opinion that the current standard of "run, hide, fight" falls short. Schools are going to have to do a ground up revision of procedures and practices related to safety and security readiness. Initial Response AKA What You Can Do Today If you are a parent with kids and all is well, hug your kids. Then do this. Have the age appropriate conversation with them about evil people and the possibility of bad things happening Their safety is in their hands, for the most part Make a plan with them of what they should do if something bad happens at school, home, or wherever Make a plan to speak with school administrators and teachers to begin the conversation toward a better plan Be kind to the teachers, this is not their fault. They are as much at risk as your kids Tell your children you love them, every day If you are a teacher and educator: Be very clear in your understanding that bad things can and do happen Understand that your safety is in your hands Talk to your admins and fellow educators about current training standards and begin to push for improvements Make a plan with yourself, your fellow teachers, and your class. This is above and beyond what your current policy states Let your students parents know that you are on their side Hug your family and friends at the end of your day We will do a follow up episode later this week to fill in the gaps of information. US Strikes Syria and Other News There is an ancient Chinese curse that goes like this. "May you live in interesting times". I'll just let you work that out. We have several different news events that have happened in the last 48 hours as we discuss the US Strikes Syria and Other News. The Syrian Air strike by the United States is the biggest news event on the radar. While that is significant, these other two can't be ignored in this context of events. The U.S. hit a Syrian Air Base with Tomahawk Missiles in response to the Syrian Government using sarin gas on civilians in its own country. This gas attack has been well publicized with graphic pictures of the dead, including children. Source: The U.S. Strikes a Syrian Air Base | Stratfor Stockholm Truck Attack This morning in Stockholm Sweden a truck was driven into a busy department store. It is being claimed a terror attack . The impact has killed at least five and injured many more. “Some people felt that this was just a matter of time,” she said. “Paris, Brussels, London and now Stockholm. I just had a feeling something like this would happen.” -Katarina Libert, 32, a freelance journalist We have spoken about the possibility of terror attacks after the London Car Attack. Incidents of terror using vehicles will continue to be used. Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/07/world/europe/stockholm-attack.html Russia has a New Submarine Russia is also in the news announcing their latest submarine. This thing is a monster. They are also informing the world that their global patrols are increasing. Russia has significant interests in Syria. They are a growing power in the global arena to be sure. This new submarine has immense tactical capabilities. Coming full circle (see what I did there?) Russia is now rattling their sword at the US air strike. Very clearly there are lots of behind the scenes politics going on. Source: http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/04/06/russia-bolsters-naval-arsenal-unveils-its-most-powerful-nuclear-sub-ever.html What Does All This Have To Do With You Depends on you actually. Either these events are significant, or they aren't. It is my experience that most (not all to be sure) people tend to react one of two ways.  They don't care. The events are not in their home town or backyard, therefore - don't care They flip the hell out. Everything turns into a doom and gloom scenario. Government conspiracies have taken over. The boogie man is clearly after them. Right now. While these things are all in some way possibly (maybe) true, there is another option. You can choose to become aware. Learning to ingest the news and events is a skill. It is a thing you can learn to do on your own. Everyday. This skill set brings a gift with it. Awareness and the ability to analyze makes you free. Free from what you ask? Freedom from being a sheeple. Oh man, new terms to define!! Sheeple: People who are incapable of thinking on their own. Sheeple always conform and follow the crowd. That said, we want you to understand this very clearly. This will happen, not just again, but many more times. In both other countries and here. Why? Because it works, very well. So, how do you protect you and your loved ones from a car or truck careening into you and others? Our standard answer as always is awareness and communication. Be aware of the threat Communicate the importance of awareness, readiness and mindset to those in your life Talk through "what if" scenarios with them So, will awareness and communication safe you from a vehicle attack? Well, maybe not. It will however give you more than a fighting chance. How so? Awareness of your immediate surroundings (Crowd? No Crowd? Escape routes?) What you carry everyday Communication with your friend or family in the moment Ability to help others in the event of an attack/real bad situation Your choice of whether or not to get further training See? Opens up many more possibilities than "oh shit, we're all gonna die!" This continued practice of awareness and communications turns the tables for you as well. Runner Fights Off Attacker Four miles into a planned 10-mile run in Seattle's Golden Gardens park on Sunday, 36-year-old Kelly Herron stopped for what she thought would be a quick bathroom break. Source: A jogger's fitness tracker documented her brutal attack on a run | Fox News Runner fights off attacker is an understatement.  Kelly Herron is a survivor. He war cry is "Not Today Motherfucker"! So much to say about her ordeal, but the first is well done lady! The picture above is her Instagram recount of the event. As always we link to the original article so you can read it for yourself. Her attacker is Gary Steiner who is described by Seattle Police as a 40 year old registered sex offender from Arizona.  Steiner was waiting in the bathroom for what he thought would be his next obvious victim. This is where everything went wrong, for Steiner! What Went Right Ms. Herron recently trained in a self defense class that her workplace offered. She took initiative to get the training Ms. Herron decided not to be the helpless victim that day She fought back with everything she had in her Remembering her training she effectively used it to her advantage Herron beat the shit out of Steiner She locked him in the bathroom until the police arrived Ms. Herron did everything right that day. This is absolutely a best case scenario of a potentially bad encounter with a predator. I do not have any specifics on Steiner but he appears to be homeless. Also, he appears to have a slighter build than average. Let's Break This Down Some More The biggest point of success is Ms. Herron's mindset. Not only choosing to fight, she fought with ferocity. She understood what was at stake in the situation and chose to give it her all. Most rapists and attackers do not expect any resistance. Plenty of studies by law enforcement reveal that predators look for the most unaware and complacent target. They do not want to struggle or fight and will MOST OF THE TIME avoid this. This is not to say that a rapist won't try to harm or hurt their intended mark. Plenty will and do. We are saying that being willing to fight back raises your chance of survival by a lot. Again, great job Ms. Herron! Our Wish List If we have any constructive critiques, they are few. I'll broaden this beyond just Ms. Herron to any woman reading this. If you can, run with a partner or group This requires clarification. Just running with another person isn't a failsafe. Your running partner(s) MUST have the SAME MINDSET as you do! The willingness to fight back. If one person has this mindset and the other doesn't, the one that doesn't becomes a real liability. This can make a potential encounter even more dangerous. Have this conversation with whoever you train with. Think of different possibilities and scenarios that could take place and discuss how you would handle it. Run with pepper spray, a weapon or something you can defend yourself with This can be car keys you hold spread out between your fingers. There are many options out there. The ability to use something other that your hands, feet fingernails, teeth, elbows or what have you is called having a "Force Multiplier".  A force multiplier can turn the situation and give you a decided advantage over an attacker. Make it a habit to carry one each and every time you leave your house. We are Full Circle Systems Security & Defense If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by clicking here. Her former boyfriend, Steven Denson violated a restraining order, found Ms. Pease in her car at work and killed her. Denson committed suicide the next day after being cornered by sheriff deputies. On the podcast I will read through the particulars of this case and then talk about possible solutions. You can read the original news story for yourself by clicking here. Realities of Abuse Domestic violence is a very sad and tragic reality in society. All too often abuse victims don't report what happens because of fear, intimidation, or embarrassment. As we highlight in the podcast, the abusers even if dealt with by law enforcement have widely different consequences. No one has the right to wage violence on an innocent person. You have a right to protect and even defend yourself if you must. Protect your own life and if you have children, their life as well. Solutions This show is not intended to be an all inclusive resource  for domestic abuse. We are endeavoring to raise awareness. With that said, the National Domestic Violence Hotline we link to below has very clear plans for many different abuse situations. Violence In Real Estate Unless you are a Real Estate Agent, most of us probably don't give Violence in Real Estate much thought. Have a conversation with a real estate professional. They can all tell you stories either from personal experience or someone they know personally. Real Estate is seen by most of us as one of those "safe places" where nothing wrong should happen. The fact is this: violence in real estate is on the rise. Let's cut to the chase. If you are someone you know is in the real estate industry, we do not want them to become a statistic or story that we talk about on this podcast. This is about raising awareness and giving some solutions. So first, let's look at some case studies. Georgia Real Estate Agent Attacked at gunpoint You can go directly to this story here. This story has an agent working in a leasing office in a new subdivision. Here is the breakdown: Agent was working alone A man entered in broad daylight, then robbed her at gunpoint taking money and jewelry The man forced her into the bathroom where he attempted sexual assault female agent fought off her attacker and escaped Real Estate Agent Fatally Shot An example of the worst case scenario, the original story can be seen here. In Atlanta Georgia a male real estate agent was visiting a property that he was interested in purchasing. The property was abandoned and in disrepair The neighbors had made multiple complaints about their concern of vagrants living inside The intruder shot the agent twice and killed him inside the home Agent Robbed and Beaten in Ambush Visually this is a rough one. You can see the original article and pictures here. The male agent was the property manager and was showing it to "a prospective client" The prospective client was supposed to be a young woman The agents wife was waiting in their vehicle outside the property Two masked gunmen were waiting inside hidden They robbed him of his wallet, wedding ring and phone They hit him in the back of the head and fled the scene And Many More There are so many different stories that I could include here. Real estate offices taken hostage. Agents robbed from their vehicles, cars, homes, you name it. Serious predation against female agents is a real and growing problem as well. The problem is a real and growing concern in the industry. While it is easy to hope for the best and pretend that violence won't happen to you, we want you to be mentally prepared and physically ready. Solutions At Full Circle Systems Security and Defense we have made a free resource available to any Agents, Brokers, and Offices. ISE is an independent security firm in Baltimore, Maryland dedicated to aggressive defense strategies through advanced science. Our elite team of analysts and developers use scientific approaches to improve our clients' overall security posture, protect digital assets, harden existing technologies, secure infrastructures, and work with development teams to ensure product security before deployment. Our adversary-centric perspective allows us to understand not only the actions of threat actors, but to understand their mindset as well. Although our relationship with these nefarious elements is distant, it is also intimate: we interact with them regularly and bridge that distance by a passionate desire to understand them. Adopting their perspective in our own assessments allows us to identify future attack vectors, and prepare for them. The attacks are inevitable, but can be defeated with the right methodologies, the right defenses, and the right perspective. Ted brings a wealth of knowledge and solutions to the safety and security conversation in the specific realm of cyber security.  This interview revealed a whole new world of possibilities and threats. Protecting Our Children

Protecting our children is the most significant duty of any people. This rings especially true as a parent. The article that inspired this episode (linked below) begin's like this: "Some may find the following post to be disturbing. Reader discretion advised."  Weak sauce. I'm not upset at the author of this piece for putting this disclaimer in. I'm shaking my head at the absurdity of an adult needing to be warned and the distinct reality that the article may be too much for some to bear. As such, we get to the heart of this episode. Protecting Our Children and this article By the way, these written words do not replace the recorded content of the podcast. They exist to merely give the reader an overview of the show content. Our episodes contain a much larger commentary than these pages provide. So listen. This is important stuff. Bullet points to cover the topics: Massive arrests following investigation Some of the worst images and videos ever viewed Multiple countries which show us the real problem Specifics on the arrests of professions What was most alarming was that many of the arrests were of people who worked with or closely interacted with children. Among those arrested were 40 school teachers, nine doctors and nurses, six law enforcement personnel, nine pastors and priests and three foster parents. Children rescued from their tortured conditions Child porn is more prevalent than anyone can imagine When Everything Goes Wrong Safety and security talk means nothing if it doesn't have results. People, you and I specifically, have to make changes when we are given better or more clarified information. Otherwise it is all just useless intellectual exercise. This article reveals a lazy and apathetic society. People do not like to think about or discuss the things that make them uncomfortable. So, they simply don't. And in doing so, we as a people allow things atrocities to take place. We allow predators to steal and destroy the innocence of our future of a people. We also willingly teach our children to do the same. This is the canary and the bottom of the well. The canary is dead. Child Predation is Evil We, as a people, have to be able to call things as they are. Not only to clearly understand what is before us but also to make clear and effective decisions about how to respond. To shy away from acknowledging something is to concede to it. And conceding to evil has evil repercussions. So then, what to do? Determine, as much as is within your power, to stand against real evil. This means with your own children, relatives, friends and acquaintances. If you have children, have very open and frank discussions with them about human predators. This doesn't have to be graphic, that is not what I am saying. But they need to understand that not everyone out there has their best interests in mind. Ask your friends if they have covered this topic with their kids. Do this regularly. Listen to what your kids say. Pay attention for a change in behavior in them. Don't let your pride in making them participate in an event or with certain people outweigh what a child is trying to convey. Let your kids know that you trust them. And that they can trust you to protect them. Know what a predator looks like and acts like for both yourself and those you are trying to protect. Look up child predator grooming. We don't have the space here to cover it all, but massively important knowledge. A good article is linked right here. Don't put kids in a situation of unnecessary risk. Slumber parties with families you don't really know? Being alone with an adult of acquaintance only? Have continuous AGE APPROPRIATE conversations about what proper respect looks like toward them and also what ok behavior is and is not. If a person, event or situation set's off your spidey-sense, don't automatically ignore it. Our culture has developed a bad habit of assuming almost all things hav...

Our Secure Places Aren't So Secure We all think places like hospitals are safe and secure from people who should't be there. Not so as the latest Brigham And Women's Hospital security fail clearly shows us. Like many of you, when I go to a hospital, it is usually not because I really want to be there. The last thing on most of our minds is being safe and secure while in the place we are going to get better. Major failures in healthcare security happen more often than anyone realize. Yet, her ability to enter restricted operating room suites — without an identification badge — shows how difficult it can be to enforce security in institutions that teem with thousands of patients, families, and staff each day. Brigham officials said their review of security video and other evidence shows she gained access to five operating rooms over two days. Source: Dressed in scrubs, she roamed the hospital. But she wasn't supposed to be there. - The Boston Globe The article we sourced and linked to describes a worst case scenario across many locations. Luckily no bodily harm was done in this situation and the person was eventually identified and dealt with. Sort of.. Concerns for Healthcare Healthcare is in the spotlight for a lot of reasons. We all want to trust the powers that be to ensuring our safety while in their care. The reality is that healthcare is vulnerable in many areas. Hospitals and providers alike have new regulations that they have to comply with, as well as a more vocal workforce. Nurses and healthcare workers are the number one group affected by workplace violence. The old standard of "check the box" training and compliance is quickly going to have to come to an end. What can healthcare do? Get up to speed. Take a really hard look at all areas of security, and realistically determine weaknesses and seek improvements. Seek better training. Make better and more effective policies that actually work beyond the paper they are written on. What can the individual do? As we always say, on almost every episode you are solely responsible for your safety. But what about these situations where you aren't ultimately in control? It is difficult. Especially when system wide changes must be made. Begin to have the conversation, proactively, with your doctor and your local hospital. Look for open forums and ask the specific questions about site vulnerability, patient and staff safety, personal information security, and so on. This is not an easy or quick fix. This will take time and effort from all of us. We are Full Circle Systems Security & Defense If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by clicking here. Ft. Lauderdale Airport Shooting Source: Accused Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooter said Government Was 'Controlling His Mind': FBI - ABC News Esteban Santiago is the individual responsible for the Ft. Lauderdale Airport Shooting. Some quick facts about Santiago: Born in New Jersey but raised in Puerto Rico where he joined the National Guard in 2007 Served in Iraq for one year and was reportedly discharged from the Alaska Army National Guard for unsatisfactory performance Santiago voluntarily went into the FBI office in Anchorage in November of 2016 "telling agents he was hearing voices and being directed by a US intelligence agency to watch ISIS videos". FBI turned info over to local law enforcement and he voluntarily submitted himself to a mental health eval Family said he was a changed man after Iraq, claiming that he had visions and voices in his head He sold all of his possessions and flew to Ft. Lauderdale with only his pistol as checked luggage. On Friday, January 6, 2017 Santiago shot 11 people in the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport baggage claim area, killing five. The FBI has currently not ruled out terrorism. The worst airport shooting in US history I've purposefully waited to release an episode on this event to see what further information came out. There are so many directions that this conversation can go. Do we talk about mental illness of our veterans as well as others? Can we discuss the FBI and their possible dropping the proverbial ball with Santiago? As the first mass shooting of 2017, we will talk mostly about how we as a nation should react to this. As with most people the question for many is how can we ensure our safety? To be very clear, your safety is your responsibility. Getting back to the basics of readiness is the first step you should take. Awareness, readiness and having a plan can do the very best for you and yours. What SHOULD the results of this be? My opinion only here. NOT further restrictions on gun transportation. When you give up freedoms for security, freedom almost always loses. What the you ask? Get serious about the mental illness problem in this country. Do NOT throw all veterans into the "watch and worry" group as many are attempting already. We need to get better at watching for signs of serious illness. Significant improvement on identifying the homegrown terrorist networks and support systems. This is the new reality for our nation. We must accept this truth and adjust our thinking appropriately. As a nation vigilance is the only response. What does this look like? Increased LEO presence in "soft target areas" Possible arming of TSA??? Open up "armed carry" for all LEO's. It takes a good guy with a gun... Out With The Old In With The New Out with the old in with the new is a quote most are familiar with. Along with all the other new year phrases, we can take them with a grain of salt, right? These idioms have proven themselves powerless time and time again. Although this is true for us all in many ways, there IS some truth to them, if you really really want to make the change. Do you really really want to? We are moving from 2016 to 2017. Most people think to themselves that they want to have a better existence in the coming year. We want the same for ourselves as well as this podcast and Full Circle Systems and how we help you and yours. So then, what makes the difference? How do you (and us as well) become the ones that truly follow through on what we say we want and actually do, hmmmm? How to actually follow through Ready for this? Be sick enough of where you are, and of YOUR EXCUSES, and do it. There you go. Turn your back on your own BS. Make the bloody change and do what you say you will. You are welcome. So, how exactly does this work? To get to it, either you will get in shape or you won't. Why? Because you either truly desire health and fitness or you truly desire sitting on your ass more and eating crap. See? That's how it works. The results reflect real desire. By the way, desire alone obviously won't get it. You must get up and do something different than you have been doing. You will probably be uncomfortable. Making the change might even be a bit painful (most real change is). But the results? Well, think on that for a bit. Ask yourself, "self, what are the results I'm getting from the actions that I am taking right now?" Ponder that answer.. So then, what about FCS and WEGW? As I've said on almost every episode. When Everything Goes Wrong is the media branch of Full Circle Systems Security and Defense. Why the difference in title? I want this format, along with any other we tackle in the future to have very few boundaries. Safety, security, defense, keeping people safe and resilient are very broad topics and can go lots of different places. I want the freedom to speak about whatever subject comes up without limiting the content to strict safety and security training. This is a real distinction. What does that look like for us and where is this all going? When Everything Goes Wrong More diverse podcasts. Interviews with more "experts" as well as the not so expert. Different subjects, and more stories Not just physical. Money, lifestyle, social, you name it Video. Lots and lots of bloody video (not really bloody, just being descriptive) Free stuff for the rest of us Documentaries of all shapes and sizes Possibly a book Articles and White Papers Hows about them apples? And now, Full Circle Systems Security and Defense We are growing our business and training. We started out almost solely focused on the healthcare system, as this is where we have a real depth of knowledge and experience. Why does this matter? Because healthcare poses the most nuanced and challenging area for safety and security training. Many reasons for this. While healthcare will remain our "bread and butter" we will be expanding our offerings this year. Beyond just healthcare, we are going to focus on: Business, both large and small Entertainment industry. Clubs, smaller production companies, theaters, etc. Real estate professionals (and other sales professionals) Houses of worship The single mom and her kids We will do this on multiple fronts. Direct person to person training, video (lots of that) webinars, written and spoken word. It's gonna be a mountain of fun! We now have training available in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico! Safe Holiday Travel For You Everyone wants safe holiday travel. Whether you are the one traveling or have family and friends coming to you, let's get everyone home safe and sound. Traveling is definitely a time of anticipation for family, friends, food and fun (got four "F's" in there, BAM!!) Packing and shopping are of primary concern, right? Don't let all the fun and anticipation stop you from taking a few steps for traveling safely. Getting Prepared Being prepared and having a plan go a long way to solving problems. Let's get to the basics then: Let people know your plans and schedule. Not the world through social media, but trusted family or friends. Know your transportation and route and have an alternative. If you are driving, is your car up to the trip? Maintenance prevents "catastrophe". First aid kits want to take this trip with you! Be sure to take your cell phone chargers, cash, food water, etc. These are some simple basics to put in place before you leave. On the Road We all understand that not everyone travels by car. Plenty of people fly, take the bus, train or whatever. Not meaning to ignore the specifics of those alternative modes of transport, we are coming to focus on car travel because that is what most people here use. Because, you know, 'Merica. The day of travel is here. You are getting on the road with about half of the population, seemingly more. Enjoy yourself! So, let's look at the actual trip: Is this the short or long game? Are you doing the driving, passengering, or a bit of both? Don't drive distracted. You know who you are. Stop it! Take breaks if you need to. Cars need gas at half time. Pay attention to others. Don't get pissy because everyone else already is. Know how to deal with road rage. In summary, practicing safe holiday travel can be simple. On the way home be sure to put the same practices in place. Making these things habit are the real goal of a good personal protection plan. Being well prepared for the trip frees you up to plan shenanigans, family gossip, confronting that uncle who is always a jerk, and eating beyond the state of a good food coma. How To Deal With Road Rage A toddler murdered as a result of road rage. There is possibly no more senseless tragedy than this. We can look at road rage from two vantage points. You are the one who has road rage.: Quit being an asshole. Seriously, there is no reason for getting that mad while driving. You are in a car, and so are they. These things may not end the way you want Learn to calm yourself down, get out and do some push ups. Take jui jitsu, boxing, muy thai, whatever you need to to get rid of some of that aggressive energy. Would you talk or act this way in front of your mother or grandmother? If you are the one being targeted by road rage: Pay attention. Is this person honking at you or getting mad at you? Do NOT feed into their anger, and try not to respond on their level. Remove yourself from the situation. Turn down a different street, go find a cop, get to a very public area, call 911 if you think you need to. I don't want to do an episode about the violence that affected you. Make sure not to stop until it is truly safe. Have an idea of an alternative way home. If this individual begins following you, do not take them to your house, or friends or family. Figure out an alternative place to go. Be ready to defend yourself if you must. This is really a last resort. When people get out of their car because they are mad, things get crazy. While these are just the basics we will do another episode related to road rage in the future. Checking the pulse of Chicago gangs and violence 2016 will be Chicago's most violent year in two decades. Chicago Gangs and Violence are at the center of this escalation. Why talk about this here? Well, my job is to help protect people in all walks of life, no matter their circumstances. What got me is that in my research I have found so many victims of this violence are little kids. I can't take that. Chicago is one of this nations great cities and I hate seeing its people living in a constant state of fear. They are being done a disservice from the rest of us if we stand by and simply ignore their plight. Kids learning to hit the deck when they hear anything loud outside, to not stand by windows.  The article is linked below so you can read the specifics for yourself. Chicago had more than 700 murders in 2016, more than in New York City and Los Angeles combined. Source: Why 2016 Has Been Chicago's Bloodiest Year in Almost Two Decades Looking at How We Got Here While most of us live in mostly safe homes not everyone does. Can you imagine the possibility of gun shots at any moment outside your home? To top it off, not being able to know who you can trust at all to help? Right or wrong, this is the reality that is Chicago. So, how did we get here? Some really bad actions by some members of the Chicago police force Knee jerk reaction from the cities leadership in how the police can even interact with the public A bizarre twist of cleaning up the gang leadership unleashed more gang violence The rampant war of words on social media Defunding social workers involved in the direct communities These are the main topics that the news story covered. Part of the conversation is to look at how the police on the line are being effected. “I tell them, ‘Be careful. Don't be so aggressive out there. Think of your family before you go out there and do something,'” the detective says as he finishes his salad, laying out the advice he gives officers under his command. “Policing has changed. If you don't change with it, you're going to lose your job.” What COULD be done going forward No one has a magic wand to wave that will fix any of this. What is being put out next is only my opinion, but I think it is on the right track. Fix the police. Encourage "self policing", honor and pride, and release them to actually do their job. No more, no less. Deal with the root of the Gang problem. Lack of strong fathers and families. Houses of worship, go do the real work Community and pride In summary this is just a small look at how to start. What if there were no more cops Imagine that there are no more cops. Can you? Now there are some out there who would rejoice at the thought, but not most people. What would your world look like with this reality? How would it affect you in your daily life? For the people in Dallas, a reality if this is having to wait longer for a response. Less assets to cover a rising demand in crime in that great city. It is a real problem for the city of Dallas. Your world with no more cops So, treading this hypothetical path, where does it lead us in you world? If the police disappeared this very moment, you would have different layers of reality to confront. The first being your personal safety. Like it or not, police are a big part of what we rely on for promoting our personal safety. As we have talked about before, police are almost always a reactionary asset. That being said, they DO react, and they do get there. This fact goes a long way to prevent lots of mischief. If there were no cops, you, and those you surround yourself with would become responsible for ensuring your personal protection. What would that look like? Safety and security of your family and friends Beyound yourself, do you have close family and friends? Most of us do, and we want them to be safe and secure from violence and ill intent, right? So, staying on this path of a world with no more cops, what would we have to do to ensure their safety? Personal practices become much more critical. Reaching out to other like minded people would be a real possibility. More food for thought. Function of daily life Police don't simply respond to assault and violent situations. They assist the community by helping with traffic control. Police regulate traffic accidents by enforcing traffic and speed laws (I know, much ridiculousness here, but I digress). Think of accidents that are left to work out on their own. People being allowed to drive however they feel, wherever they want? (School zones and neighborhoods with kids) What would you and your community have to do to respond to these events? Reasonable expectation of liberty Being able to, for the most part, go about your life without having to worry about these issues is a type of liberty. You can go to get groceries today with the reasonable expectation of people obeying basic traffic laws. This allows you to travel their safely. Put this idea on a much larger scale and think about beyond you town to your region, and even your state. The situation would look very different withouit the police doing their job. So, traffic and violence are all that we really covered in this discussion today. We haven't scratched the surface of what a police force does by far. The real reason that we went through this little mental exercise is this. Police are under real scrutiny right now. Some reasons are valid, others are knee jerk vitriol. Morale in departments is at an all time low. Attacks directly against police are at an all time high. There are good cops (most of them) and there are bad cops ( a very small percentage). Most are there to serve, and they serve with pride. Don't be so fast to go along with what you hear in the media about police. Think for yourself, and go through the mental exercise of what it would be like without them. How To Survive Being Attacked

How To Survive Being Attacked When you get down to it, how to survive being attacked is the basic question we need to answer. Nobody wants to become a statistic of violence. As we tell people (often) there are no guarantees to avoiding all violence, but you can do a lot to prevent most situations. So let's look at that first. Preventing the Attack The very first step of how to survive being attacked is having awareness and mindset. Awareness means you understand your surroundings and who you are with as much as you are able. Do you know the people you are around? Are you in a relatively good area, place or situation? Are you practicing distraction? Another way of saying this is "don't do stupid things with stupid people". You can add location to that phrase as well. We have spoken about awareness on a previous episode. You can get to it by clicking here. So then, what do I mean about mindset? Take a look at it this way. When you are at home you can (hopefully) let your guard down. When you leave home though, your natural awareness should go up a notch or two. What do I mean? Make yourself practice awareness (as opposed to practicing distraction). Look at the people around you. Listen to the tone of your surroundings. Think about situations and what they mean. Do you see something out of place? Can you leave, immediately? Determine to survive if something should happen. Again, we never want people living in fear or being afraid to leave home. Your job is to be ready. Being ready allows you to see the attack coming if nothing else. The Attack Most attacks happen very fast. Sometimes there can be indicators (as in the story above) but not often. For example let's talk about the knockout game. Observing the place and time Consider the individuals around you (single attacker, multiple?) Actions indicate the attack, even in mere moments Your ability to react at all depends on your awareness and mindset. This can all take place in an incredibly short time. You Surviving the Attack It is happening. Right now. I don't care if you have boxed, taken karate, jui jitsu, or nothing at all. A fight is completely different than a sport. To put this into perspective, I'll give you a quote that we use in all of our training. The image says it all, and this is why we hammer mindset so hard. If you are attacked, all bets are off. WE ARE NOT ADVOCATING DEADLY FORCE! Only you can determine the level of response you give. Living with the consequences of an action always needs to be thought about, preferably ahead of time. The flinch response is a human response. That is something that you can practice no matter what. Please hear me when I tell you that an attack is not a game. There are no rules such as in a sport. Use what you have on you to survive. Bite, gouge, hit, pull, twist, whatever it takes. If there is an opportunity to get out of there, do it. Whatever happens, survive. On the Back Side Call the police, guards, authorities, whatever. Seek medical attention if you need is (or call for it if your attacker does). Make sure you and/or those you are with are ok. Take time to think about what happened. Evaluate it and consider that you are able to take stock. Surviving being attacked is no small thing. Don't allow an event to define you from now on. Don't let yourself become a victim. Be a survivor forever and no matter what. We are Full Circle Systems Security & Defense If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by clicking here. Your last chapter has not been written I need to talk to you about motivation today. My motivation, and yours. There is so much noise, confusion, rhetoric and spin in this world right now. It is all trying to get your attention. It is trying to grab your mind and heart, to lull you into a state of complacency and apathy, and to get you into an early grave before your time. Hear me when I say that your last chapter has NOT been written yet. There are people who want to take advantage of people. They want to manipulate, scare, threaten, control, and sometimes harm people. Let me be clear when I tell you that these are the weakest, most pathetic and disgusting examples that the human race has to offer. Duty, Honor and Responsibility I'll give you a brief insight into my childhood (this isn't a plea for therapy, I've had a hug and I'm ok). I was a scared kid. Lots of reasons for that, but to be clear, I understood what pain was. Fear is not something any kid or adult for that matter should ever live in. That pain and fear shaped me. It shaped me. It formed what I dreamed about when I was young. Fear and pain molded my mind to dream of being strong, of being capable, and of not having to live in fear and experience pain. I read books about the strong. We call them heroes. These heroes had ideals, a code they lived by. Truth and right, and oh yeah, they defended those who couldn't defend themselves. It was all consuming. It made me go to work on myself. I wanted to be like them. I trained, learned, practiced, and eventually went into law enforcement. That motivation in my life turned into a passion. Protecting others. Defending people, like you. Protecting against those that would do them harm. This is where my life has lead me, and this is my duty, honor and responsibility. Author Up & Write Your Last Chapter I know that this is a very different episode. Conveying the importance of what we do has been screaming at me today. I can't get away from the thought of it. I read updates off of my Google Alerts every day and just shake my head. People can avoid most situations that they get in. Not in all cases, but in many of them. If I can help you to simply WAKE UP and become aware of what is going on in your life and around you, that alone would change my news feed. While I absolutely understand that not all bad things can be avoided, you can affect most of what happens to you. You have a choice. Proactive or reactive. Survivor or victim. Make the decision to affect what happens to you. Determine to be your own author, and remember that your last chapter has not been written yet. After you begin that you can help those around you. You can't help anyone of you are debilitated by the fear and violence in the news. Especially yourself. This Weeks News The big news this week was the Ohio State University violence. We did a previous podcast episode on that. Lots of media has reported throughout the week confirming that this was a terrorist event, culmination in the fact that ISIS has taken credit. They went so far as to call him one of their soldiers. Moving on.. There is a current hostage situation in a Jacksonville FL. bank.  Police have been able to negotiate hostage releases but the suspect is holding a gun to hostages heads and making threats. Be alert when you approach public places please. Also this week, two huge malware campaigns have been reported against Android phones. This attack takes the most vital and private information, codes, passwords, etc. and stores them. Too many school lockdowns to list or discuss. Do you have, or know someone with school age kids? Have you had a safety and awareness conversation with them? Hospital information security is a hot topic now. A recent article tells a tale that healthcare in general is wide open to cyber attack and manipulation. We have an upcoming interview with an industry expert on the depth and risks that everyone faces with this vulnerability. What is Our Agenda? While we are very happy you are with us on this journey and either reading or listening to this, we do have an agenda. We absolutely want you to listen to this podcast, contact us with questions about security and awareness training. To sum things up, we never want you to be influenced by anything to the point that you live in a state of fear. Keeping You and Yours Safe in Uncertain Times

The Ohio State University Attack An OSU student, Abdul Razak Ali Artan drove a car into a group of people and then proceeded to get out and stab them. Our prayers and condolences go out to the individuals effected by this Ohio State University attack. SO, a recap: Subject drives vehicle into a crowd Gets out of vehicle, proceeds to stab as many as he can Cop shows up, shoots dirt bag While (thankfully) our nations warning of a possible Macy's Parade terrorist attack didn't prove true, this took place shortly after. The man who plowed car into a crowd at Ohio State University before stabbing several pedestrians with a butcher knife on Monday is said to have referred to American-born Al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki as a “hero” on his social media accounts. Source: 'Stop interfering with other countries': OSU attacker slammed US over treatment of Muslims on Facebook A Look at the Event As this is an after action report, we'll direct you to your favorite news feed for the specifics. What we currently know is this: Abdul Razak Ali Artan had made previous social media statements and threats against the United States The subject used time tested and recently encouraged terrorism tactics in his attack The standard "run, hide, fight" warning was issued and a shelter in place order was given Ohio State University Police Officer Alan Horujko was in the immediate area and was able to respond in under a minute How do we respond from here Although solid standard procedures were set in place, there are a few things we need to look at. We never want anyone to become a victem of an event like this. Run, hide, fight needs an awareness message and adaptive focus added to it. There is no one size fits all situation or scenario. It is especially relevant that some people had a plan. CNN reported tweets of classrooms where either current or former military members took charge during the shelter in place. They reportedly moved their fellow students to the center of the rooms and guarded the door to deal with whatever assailent or attecker appeared. This is a great example of an adaptive plan. Furthermore, Officer Horujko was in the right place at the right time. Without this absolute windfall, this attack could have been much worse for all involved. Good job sir. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Or a car and a knife.. -Adapted quote Keeping You and Yours Safe in Uncertain Times We at Full Circle Systems what you to be able to go home at the end of your day. Thanksgiving Terrorist Threat

The Thanksgiving terrorist threat is real. Serving up a little turkey, dressing and ISIS to you in this episode. This country we live in, the good ol US of A! Nothing is more American than Thanksgiving, football, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, just to make things really special, ISIS has issued a broad terrorism warning. This is from an article that ISIS used to encourage and teach their followers. The new ISIS article offers a guide to inflicting maximum casualties using trucks, accompanied by a picture of the Macy's parade with a caption identifying it as an especially rich target for terrorists. How ISIS works and how they want you to react ISIS, as well as terrorist groups in general, are not very original. They tend to be blatant copy cats in their tactics. With good reason. Being a copy cat works for them. Allow me to explain. Terrorist groups have always used the copy cat approach. Why is that you ask? Well, as we stated above, it works. More on this in a minute. Another reason is that the individuals that they are encouraging to pull these attacks off are their base line operatives. Think opposite of elite here. The reason that this works is that until a style of attack is proven to be faulty (meaning it is successfully stopped) they promote repeating it. For example: Suicide bombings are still used (with great success). Pipe bombs and pressure cooker bombs have been recently and effectively used. Big trucks carrying explosives or just driven into large crowds of people. You get the point. Not a lot of high level training, planning or thinking is involved for individuals to use any of these tactics. Simple works. They want you to be scared. Out of your mind that is. That is what makes them terrorists by the way. They intend to foment terror, on the largest scale by the simplest means. They would like to see America driven to its knees and brought to ruin from our people scared out of their minds. And no eating turkey. Or gravy, can't leave that out! Source: ISIS singles out Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade as 'excellent' attack target How We want You to React to the Thanksgiving Terrorist Threat How should you react to this? Be alert. Pay attention to your surroundings. Look for things like someone shoving a backpack into a garbage can or mailbox. This is not normal behavior. Alert police and get people away from there. Look for maniacal people driving really big trucks into crowds. Warn others, and offer help when you can. Pay attention to your surroundings. Pay attention to your gut instincts. If you follow this show, you should be paying attention anyway, right? Don't let this threat ruin your day. We want you to eat turkey and gravy. Everything else on the table as well. We want you to enjoy this uniquely American holiday with your family and friends. Watch the parade, football, your kids play and take a nap. Oh yeah, something else. Thank a cop, firefighter, first responder or a nurse. Many of them are working on this day to keep you and yours self and serve your community. They miss their family, football and nap to. Give thanks. We have so much to be thankful for, make sure you include remembrance as part of your day. "This is not something that just occurred to us over the weekend," Miller said at a news conference. "Bottom line: Come to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Have a good time. Bring the family."

Maturity is ultimately measured by looking at someones attitude towards helping others..  This is especially true regarding a personal protection plan. Helping others in your life is where you gravitate toward as you mature in your own process. First you must understand that you need a plan. After that you go through the process of working out the fundamentals in your daily life. Once these thing become habit, you can turn your attention to the people in your life. Why? Because it's not all about you Listen, I'm sure you are great. As great as you may be, that isn't why I want you to have a personal protection plan. Helping others is why. And to be clear, I'm not only talking about your friends and family. This is a given. I need you to help me change our culture. People in general are distracted. Distraction causes apathy. Apathy ultimately takes lives. I want to assure you that your life completely counts. While your life does matter, you deciding and being able to help others matters even more. Would you be able to help a complete stranger? Could you ever see the possibility of it? I simply want you to practice awareness and security, and begin looking beyond yourself. If you begin doing this, you can make a huge impact. By practicing your own awareness, you can affect your friends and family. Recognizing others needs can impact your local community. If you can teach someone else to raise their own awareness you can change the world. With so many people distraught over current events, lead them to change yourself. Show those you can how helping others begins by changing yourself.

Practical Post Election Security Tips – Personal Protection Plan Part 2

May you live in interesting times. - Ancient Chinese Curse Today we bring you some practical post election security tips, and also practical things you can do at any time. Personal security begins with mindset, but only takes place when put into practice! With the election just behind us, emotions are still high. Rioting and assaults have been reported all around our nation. With a focus on keeping you and yours safe, regardless of your politics, let's look at some practical post election security tips that you can quickly implement. Social Media Security With almost everyone on social media these days, it is always a good time to discuss best practices for personal security while online. We all (should) know about using passwords on your devices. In the same light, those free online games are widely recognized as ways to get your personal information a.k.a phishing (right)? There are many directions you can discuss online security, but let's focus on your personal life today, okay? Don't put out overt political statements to a broad audience. Listen, talking politics with friends is one thing. don't give those you barely know (or not at all) information or fuel to use against you. You never know where others may stand, or what may trigger their response. You should never post where you live online. Try to keep in mind the need to know basis. If someone doesn't need to know, don't let them. Personal pictures can be a problem. I know, we ARE talking about social media, right? Pictures of your children, family and friends are what it is all about. You can check your security preferences. If your security is set on public, or "friends of friends" change it. Only friends (preferably those you actually know) and family should have access. Although it is fun to let people know you are going on a trip, try waiting until after you get home. Stupid Things with Stupid People While that protest may sound fun, be careful of the situations you put yourself in. I am also talking about other situations than protests. You are going to have to do a bit of personal introspection here. How well do you know the people you are around? Although this seems like a common sense issue to many, sometimes you can find yourself in an unfamiliar crowd. Pay attention to your Spidey Sense. We all have that "one" friend. You know, the one that can't keep their mouth shut, who gets very pushy, and possibly likes to pick a fight. Seriously consider the consequences of surrounding yourself with this kind of person. Is the situation you are in getting out of control? Pay attention to what is actually happening around you. Are people angry, beginning to destroy property, attacking others physically? If so, remove yourself quickly! Your Daily Life Our everyday life is really where security needs to be put into practice. Although life for many of us has very few bumps along the road, you can never predict when "something" will happen. Usually it comes at the least expected moment. Get in the habit of looking around. Before you leave your home. When you are going into a store. Approaching your car or transportation. Awareness is the number one habit. Lock your car, your home, and important places. We no longer live in a world where you can just leave your door unlocked and unguarded. Lock doors even when you are home. Put your valuables out of sight. As the old saying goes, out of sight, out of mind. Cell phones in your car? Put it away. Expensive tools outside? store them safely. Think about what you have in view of the public. When walking in public, walk confidently. Always make brief eye contact with passersby. Predators don't like that and will pass up potential targets. Pay attention to your gut feelings. If something inside you is uneasy about a person or situation, don't ignore it. Remove yourself, or them from you. Get a dog. A big one. Learn self defense. What kind? I'm a fan of boxing,

Cal/OSHA has implemented a substantial change in policy and new regulations for healthcare settings. This has been assisted by nurses unions and is looking to be adopted by other states and organizations as a model program. The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board (OSHSB) today voted unanimously to approve nation-leading regulations to prevent workplace violence in healthcare settings. Source: Nurses Celebrate California's New Regulations to Prevent Workplace Violence in Healthcare Settings | National Nurses United This affects healthcare in several ways, and will have long lasting effects on the industry as a whole. Some of the possible results that can be foreseen are: Employee/patient  safety gets serious Revamping of policy and procedures new training requirements access systems and communications liability and replacement outlines Legal liability at every event of violence Non-compliance triggers funding and payment reimbursement delays/forfeits payment Liability for system if staff not trained Families and patients endangered from events and resulting from improper/inadequate procedures in place Healthcare access becomes more structured safety procedures implemented for access visitation monitored and restricted cost per visit increases over time And so much more. This will be an ongoing conversation from today into the future. Industry changes are coming, stemming from the rise in violence and resulting in policies that influence our daily lives. While this has been focused on healthcare, other industries will adopt similar templates to deal with workplace violence. At FCS our goal is to protect you and yours in uncertain times. Prepared or Unprepared – Personal Protection Plan: Part 1

Prepared or Unprepared The difference between being prepared or unprepared is vital to you. When it comes to awareness and personal security and protection, we don't think about that often. If at all. For most of us that live in a state of relative safety and security, this is a very good thing. It means that we don't have a fear of harm or injury in our daily lives. The danger is that this reality makes most of us very complacent. Understanding that bad things can and do happen help turn a complacent mind into a prepared mind. To better explain this, let's take a closer look at the differences of prepared or unprepared people. Remember, this is relating to awareness and security. Unprepared Unprepared people are the most vulnerable in hostile and violent situations. These individuals have generally never allowed themselves to consider taking responsibility for their own awareness and security. Besides, that is what the police are for, right? To keep it simple for this episode, we will look at the reaction of an unprepared person to this kind of situation: Unable to comprehend the event slows the reaction. The person has a very hard time with the thought that something bad is actually happening to them. This is a huge danger to them, those in their care, and possibly others around them. Freeze, flight or fight response. The unprepared and untrained (or poorly trained) person typically falls into one of these three responses. They do this without thinking, and by all three can be a danger to themselves or those around them. The react without thought to anyone else Inability to later contend with having gone through a bad situation. In other words, they tend to live as a victim and have difficulty getting back to normal. While these are understandable reactions, they are many times unnecessary. By preparing yourself for the possibility of hostility and violence, you can avoid and overcome these responses. Prepared Being prepared as related to your Personal Security Plan means that you actually have one. A plan that is. If you know that bad things can and do happen, then they might happen to you. No one wants that. Real life events rarely announce themselves. When a person least expects it is usually when something takes place. With this in mind, here is a picture of prepared awareness and security: Acceptance of the situation. While everyone has a moment of alarm at an unannounced event, a prepared person can recover from this very quickly. This allows them to understand and accept the fact that the event is actually happening to them. Assess the event. What is happening? Where is it happening? Who is it happening to? What can you do, or what do you need to do? What items do you have around you that can help? Take Action. Deescalate, move, hide, fight if you can and you must. Help someone else if you can.  Depending on the situation or event, being prepared gives you at least a few options. Most of all, you are able to think and be proactive. Alert for help. If needed and you are able, alert the police, fire department, security, or others. As you can see, a prepared mindset give you better options. It also allows you to consider situations and possibilities before they happen. This is not to make you live in fear or hide under your bed all day. This is to empower you to live confidently and be resilient in your life.

    Awareness and Safety While Traveling

Awareness and Safety While Traveling Many people travel as a part of their profession. Your personal safety is the top priority for anyone. Here is a basic awareness and safety checklist that has been made simple and actionable. Determine to make these practices habits, as these habits may save your life. Other people go to conferences or have other travel assignments. The basic fact is that, when you are away from home, awareness and safety while traveling is essential. Decide that your personal awareness and safety are your top priority. Making this conscious decision is the most important aspect of a Personal Protection Plan. We want you to go home safely at the end of your day. When traveling Tell as few people as possible your travel plans. Yes, family and good friends should be trusted, but everyone else needs to be on a “need to know” basis.  This includes social media posts/updates.  Have an alternative explanation ready for the inevitable question of “so, what do you do” or “what is your business”. Think of something relatively boring that won't invite deeper questions. On that note, try to know some information about your “alternative career” just in case you are pressed for more information. The real trick is to redirect the conversation to a different topic or politely end it. When in an airport, boarding or deboarding a plane (this works with getting in or out of a car) put down your cell phone, magazine or book. Look around and be observant. Is anyone paying too much attention to you? If in a vehicle, is there another car seeming to follow you? This is not to invoke paranoia, but to pay attention. Again, before you jump back on your phone or grab that magazine, are you in a place where it is secure enough to focus on that? Use your judgement, and asking the question to yourself is great awareness training in itself. At your Hotel Again, have your alternative career story at the ready. Think of that need to know basis. Do not stay on either the ground floor or top floor if possible. The ground floor is too accessible to intruders and the top floor has limited movement options in an emergency. When entering your room, keep the door open, and systematically check the closet, the bathroom, beneath the bed, and behind the curtains. Always have a defensive object at the ready (keys in your hand, book, an umbrella). If you feel the need, have hotel security escort you to your room. Know where your exits are. Have an evacuation plan in mind at all times. Always keep the light on in your room when you are not there, and keep the drapes pulled even when you aren't there. Keep a flashlight (fresh batteries?) next to your bed within reach. Consider traveling with a motion alarm that can be put on your door knob. These are inexpensive (about $20.00) insurance. Keep the “do not disturb” sign on your door, even when you aren't there. Never leave personal information or company material in your room. If you ever feel threatened, call “911”. Again, your personal safety is of utmost importance. We hope this simple list helps you think through your own Personal Protection Plan. My initial information was not clear so I assumed that the deputy was in the hospital also as hospital security. Not so. The hospital policy outlines that "security is the responsibility of the agency that brings the inmate to the hospital." The deputy was at the hospital on a detail that was not assigned to Hall. The update article is linked below. A Harris County Sheriff's Deputy shot 46-year-old, Ricky Lynn Hall, on the fifth floor or Ben Taub Hospital Thursday morning around 10 a.m. Source: Digging deeper: Why was inmate involved in Ben Taub shooting left unsupervised? | khou.com This still leaves us with questions. Where were the agency officers assigned to guard Hall Why was Hall unrestrained without guards present Why was the medical student in the room with an unrestrained inmate  Did the medical student have the correct and proper training to ready her for the situation To be very clear, we are NOT in any way shape or form being accusatory toward Ben Taub Hospital. We also have the greatest sympathy towards the medical student for having this happen to her. Ben Taub Hospital Shooting Credit abc13.com An off duty deputy working at the Ben Taub Hospital in Houston Texas shot an inmate holding a medical student hostage. Full article linked below. A deputy shot and wounded an inmate receiving care in Houston's Ben Taub Hospital Thursday morning after the patient obtained an 'edged weapon' and held it to a medical student's throat, according to a Houston Chronicle report. Source: Deputy shoots inmate in Ben Taub Hospital who held med student hostage The inmate, Ricky Lynn Hall, was in the hospital for evaluation after having seizures. Mr. Hall seized a female medical student and help a "sharp edged object" to her neck. An off duty deputy working at the hospital heard the medical student screaming from the floor above. Mr. Hall said he would kill the student if the security guard didn't shoot him. The security guard shot him So, this sounds like the inmate wanted "death by cop". The security guard (deputy) shot twice, at least got him once. Mr. Hall went through surgery and is reportedly still alive. Quite a few questions come up from this incident. Why was the medical student alone with an unrestrained inmate? Or, was she? Was any other security or persons in the room with her? How did the inmate get a "sharp edged object"? More questions than this will surface. Hospital violence is on the rise. Do you know what policies and procedures your facility have? Are your security guards armed? Is the training provided adequate? Is the hospital staff comfortable with the training that is provided? See, lots of questions. Violence exists. This is a fact. Instead of being reactionary to it, make a plan, implement the plan and practice the plan. We do not rise to the occasion, we fall to our base level of training. Let's all learn from the Ben Taub Hospital shooting. Stay safe.

Understanding and practicing an Awareness Mindset We live in a world that is usually safe, but sometimes dangerous. An awareness mindset is the most important part of a Personal Protection Plan. First, let's define: Awareness- Being aware of one's surroundings and being able to identify potential threats and dangerous situations. The practice of awareness is much more a mindset than a skill set. Anyone can implement an awareness mindset without formal training. What does it take? Know that threats exist. Ignorance or denial of threats ruins your ability to be able to recognize and avoid danger Understand that you are ultimately responsible for your own security. Law enforcement and security forces are REACTIONARY almost all of the time Trust your "gut". Your intuition is a very powerful asset and ally. Far too often people ignore that "gut feeling" that is telling them that something is wrong In the end, having an awareness mindset that you are willing to take responsibility is the foundation of your safety and security. It is up to you to look our for yourself, your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. Pass on what you learn and know. Begin making a conscious habit of being aware of what your "gut" is telling you and what is happening around you. Do this even when you are distracted. That is what will set you apart from being a victim to being a survivor. Practical Tactics for an Awareness Mindset Put down your phone. Seriously, there is plenty of time when you aren't out and about to check Instagram updates and your friends on Snapchat. Get your head up and your eyes looking around. Think about what you are seeing. Is someone out of place or acting in a strange manner? What about that car that doesn't look like it belongs? Is you "gut" trying to tell you something (other than about the tacos you ate a half an hour ago)? Make the decision, and start practicing an awareness mindset today!
