In this episode, we discuss our first-ever immersive installation: A Conversation in a Clearing, which brings the Tree Speech podcast to life, allowing audiences to engage with trees and reflect on their relationship with nature and the environment. Combining audio narrative storytelling with a physical representation of a peaceful, winter clearing in the woods, the installation allows visitors to actively relax and settle into a peaceful place where their minds and hearts may feel at ease. This enchanted space allows the imagination to be free. The Western Avenue Studios and Lofts have an event on the first Saturday of every month called “open studios,” when the public can come see all the incredible art happening in Lowell, Massachusetts. You can visit A Conversation in a Clearing during open studios, the exhibit will be running at the Storage Closet Gallery at 160 Western Ave, Floor 2, in Lowell, MA from November 5 through January 7, coinciding with Open Studios on 12/3, 12/10, and 1/7 from 12-5 pm and by appointment by emailing treespeechpodcast@gmail.com. We were also joined by artist Antoinette Indge, who curates and manages the gallery. To find out more about her and her work, check out: https://www.smallglories.com and Small Glories on instagram. Please consider supporting us through our Patreon - every contribution supports our production, and we'll be giving gifts of gratitude including the audio track from our installation, A Conversation in a Clearing for patrons of all levels. Please also consider passing the word to tree loving folks, and rate and review us on Apple podcasts. Every kind word helps. Visit us also on instagram @ treespeechpodcast. Lynn Herring at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art Born in Chicago to a working-class family, Lynn Herring came to New York in her 20's to pursue a career as an advertising art director and to develop her studio practice as a visual artist in the city that produced many of the contemporary artists that inspired her. Living in the NYC metropolitan area gave Lynn the opportunity to study at the School of Visual Arts while working at her advertising job. She ended up taking a break from her advertising career and graduated from SVA with honors in 2008 with a BFA in Sculpture. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts, Lynn began showing her video installations at a funky little gallery on the Lower East Side and had the remarkable opportunity to show her videos in the Pera Museum in Istanbul, Turkey before her eventual move to the Hudson Valley. Upon arriving in Kingston, NY in 2016, Herring found studio space in Kingston's Brush Factory. Here was an amazing 100-year old industrial space filled with artists and entrepreneurs quietly living and making their work. Herring's studio work is influenced by her work in the advertising industry where bold simple imagery and witty short headline copy is used to execute complex strategies. Her sculpture and print work have a hard-edged and clean graphic aesthetic on the one hand and a wonky cartoon-like form and line quality on the other hand. It is as if Donald Judd and Dr. Seuss collided with each other. Her most recent work is a reengineered Tic Tac Toe game designed to “Make America Relate Again”. Created with organic crooked-shaped, brightly-colored wood Xs and Os and using a more complicated wonky-shaped game board, Herring's game is an object used to help many different kinds of people to connect for a playful and sane moment in this time of cultural and political toxicity. Her interest in minimalism, contemporary culture, social psychology, spirituality, play and humor inform Herring's work. Herring has been exhibiting her work since 2005 and has been included in several juried shows including the Pera Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, the WAAM museum in Woodstock, NY, the Visual Arts Gallery in Chelsea and at Wired Gallery in High Falls, NY. Herring recently completed her MFA studies with honors at SUNY New Paltz in a multi-disciplinary program with a concentration in printmaking and sculpture. She is now taking her XOX game on the road. So, keep on the lookout for her in your local diner, coffee shop, park, gallery or museum. You never know where she may pop up to play a game with you. Click here to learn about her show that was mentioned in the interview. The book mentioned in the interview was Slaughter House-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. XOX! Koreanamericanheritage.com presents an old episode of Inthekimchijar podcast. This was in February 2017 where I interview a huge supporter of Jishinbalpki, Mrs. Jenny Hong she always provided huge pots of spicy rice cake and fish cake soup for the drummers. I wanted an opportunity to thank her and hear her story so in my broken Korean I interviewed her. I hope you learn a bit about Mrs. Hong and you can find her in Koreatown at Western Beauty Salon on Western Ave and 4th Street. KAHP Intro music credited to Ban-Jang Kim of Windy City. This week on the podcast Jerry and Bob explore Western Ave. Western Ave has long been a "go to" street for Seattle locals looking for parking or just as a thoroughfare through the city. But with the advent of the new Marketfront, times are changing. We talk to Walter, a specialty shoe maker who talks about his craft and the lost art of apprenticeship. Brooke, a local artist along Western who is optimistic for the future. Molly talks to us about being a new business owner in The Market and what she has grown to love. And finally we stop in at Ugly Baby, who isn’t ugly or a baby at all. It is a store full of cool art and eclectic gifts, we talk to Rosalie the owner and she gives us the inside scoop on what it’s all about. Let’s Listen! Well, we tried something new. I gathered up 3 owners/brewers from different breweries in a region and had them talk a little beer with me. Hosted and set up by my guy John Brand at Open Outcry, we were joined by Mark Kocol of One Trick Pony in Lansing, IL, and Matt Johnson, brewer at Horse Thief Hollow, just a little ways north of Open Outcry on Western Ave in the Beverly neighborhood. We got down to the bottom of a lot of things, including, glasses, cans, crowlers, and growlers. It was great to hear from each of them on the past, present, and future of Southside Chicago beer. They have a lot to offer in that part of the city suburbs, both on and off trends. Be sure to follow all of them on Social Media: Open Outcry Brewing Co. (first name is fine) I am calling about the inauguration day protesters still facing trumped up criminal charges. Your office needs to drop these remaining charges. There is no good reason your office should be pursuing these charges when six people have already been found NOT GUILTY on all counts in the first trial. Again, your office should drop the remaining charges. Over the last year these prosecutions have pushed all limits: Intimidation to coerce plea deals by making inflated charges. Shielding law enforcement from public accountability by issuing gag orders. Disrupting people's lives by making overblown charges and using those to justify intrusive, extensive investigations meant to build those cases. overall strategy to intimidate activists, disrupt social movements and silence dissent by weaponizing the use of trumped up charges is not going unnoticed. Your office has the power to end the repression and intimidation. The prisoner, Sean Swain, is a model prisoner, a published writer and a radio personality on a globally-syndicated radio show. Because Sean exposed how prison employees who were directed by ODRC Counsel Trevor Clark intercepted and stole Sean's mail from courts to hide their crimes, prison officials have shut down all of Sean's communication to the outside world…to his family, his friends, and even to the courts. Prison officials are blocking Sean's phone, email, and even regular mail. Their goal is not just to silence him, but to cut him off from everyone who loves him and drive him to suicide. “I want you to know that I'm signing an online petition that has 50,000 signatures already, demanding that the director of prisons resign, and I'm urging your office to make arrangements to speak with Sean. You can contact him by phone at the prison by calling his Case Manager K. Baessler at: (513) 932–3388, ext. 84405 or ext. 84410. Please know that if anything happens to Sean while he's being illegally silenced, I know a lot of registered voters, including me, who will hold your office responsible. The eyes of the world are watching.“ CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS: For last Hotwire's May Day roundup we reported that a Wells Fargo in Seattle had been smashed up and graffitied, but it in fact was in Olympia, Washington. Also, the US Bank that was smashed in Olympia was on May 2, not May 1.

Today's episode is Part 2 of my amazing interview with Shanel Anderson of Soul City Yoga. In it Shanel gets real about the nitty-gritty reality of making a living as a yoga teacher, chats about turning your passion into a business and gives us business owners some yoga poses that'll ground us even during our crazy days. Shanel tells us about Buti Yoga and how she came to this practice when searching for a yoga style that would bring more movement into her practice. In sanskrit Buti literally means "a cure that is hidden" which seems so fitting because it's a deeply personal, chakra based practice that allows people to connect with themselves on a more primal level through specific movements and music. Shanel has my interest all piqued and I'm planning a trip to Lynn for a class sometime in March (who wants to come with?!) Shanel shares her goals for her business in 2017 and her hopes around bringing yoga to more people of color. Shanel addresses the fact that people of color are majorly underrepresented in the yoga community and shared her thoughts on how to change this. As I say a million times at the end, I loved my chat with Shanel and I'm happy to bring it to you today. Enjoy! It's my lucky number 13 episode! Today I'm speaking with Shanel Anderson of Soul City Yoga in Lynn, Massachusetts. I got Shanel's name from Erica Feldmann of Hauswitch (check out Episode 5) and immediately reached out for an interview. Shanel graciously accepted and soon we found ourselves in a 90 minute Skype interview. There's a whole lot of advice and empathy and laughter in these 90 mins and since I didn't want to cut anything out, I'm making this interview a two-parter. Shanel and I get started by chatting about her long path to the yoga life and what led to starting her business. We hit some of really important stuff right off, opening in a neighborhood with a "reputation," being a person of color in the yoga world and the gender bias that we both experienced when opening our spaces. I so appreciated Shanel's willingness to, I guess...go there with me on certain issues. On the more spiritual side, we dive into the beautiful practice of opening yourself up to the Universe and it's plans for you. As business owners, this isn't always easy when we're dealing with our egos and fears, but as evidenced in Shanel's story, it can pay off big-time. It led her to the perfect studio space, a like minded staff of teachers and just a general sense that she is going in the right direction with her business. We chat about the reality of business burnout, hiring the best people (again, follow the Universe!), and the power that your mind has on your luck or your destiny. Shanel also talks about why she believes in mentorship and gives thoughts on how we can better support the women in our lives. I loved speaking with Shanel; she's warm, funny and so easy to talk to as evidenced by our wonderfully long conversation. Enjoy the show!
