Climate scientist and author, Joëlle Gergis (pictured), talks about her new book, "Humanity's Moment: A climate scientist case for hope", with the Research Director from the Climate Council, Dr Simon Bradshaw. The discussion between Dr Gergis and Dr Bradshaw was a Climate Council Bookclub event. Dr Gergis felt she had no option but to write the book as she had access to a vast array of information and evidence; evidence being illustrated with alarming rapidity and it personally reached something of a crescendo when it was predicted that Koalas would become extinct in New South Wales by 2050. Those eager to hear more of what Dr Gergis has to say can do that at Melbourne's Climarte on Monday at 6:00 pm when she joins a conversation with City of Yarra Mayor Cr Sophie Wade. Bill Kelly is known around the world for his art, for his passion for peace and his creativity in helping design places for people. He is American by birth, but now calls Australia, more particularly Nathalia in northern Victoria, home. He and his wife Veronica have brought art to this small country town and through their dedication have given the community a point of difference as the town is becoming increasingly recognized for its interest in art; art in all its forms.Bill was at one time the Dean (he's patently uncomfortable with such a title) of the Victorian College of the Arts and has long been embedded in that city's arts community and although he's not affiliated with it, he recognizes Climarte. He is appalled by violence, in any form, and sees climate change as the manifestation of violence.

Between 30 November and 11 December 2015, COP21—the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference—will, after twenty years of UN negotiations, aim to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. While nation leaders will make the ultimate decisions at the conference, contributions (or interventions) to the negotiations can and should come from everywhere across the world, from every part of society, from every person, young and old. So what can Melburnians do to make an impact, to make a difference, to have our voices heard? What about big cities and country towns, artists and NGOs? And will any of it make any difference at all? Presented by Oceania’s division of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI Oceania), this panel included Cathy Oke, City of Melbourne councillor; Guy Abrahams, co-founder and CEO of CLIMARTE; and Victoria McKenzie-McHarg, climate change campaign manager at the Australian Conservation Foundation. Listen in and raise your hand as the discussion asks what climate action we can take to stay under the tipping point and how we can get our leaders to take notice—because what they decide to do about climate change affects us all.
