Though we live on a planet comprised primarily of water, the amount of freshwater available for human consumption and industrial purposes continues to dwindle due to pollution and freshwater runoff into the ocean. Water is embedded in every product we buy and the energy we use to power our lives. Water agencies in many parts of the United States struggle to find an adequate supply of clean water to meet the needs of the people and businesses they serve. Recycling water is becoming a necessity, and today we will talk with Patrick Sheilds, General Manager of the West Basin Water District in Southern CA, and Stephen Katz, Market Development Manager at SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions, about the many varieties and applications of recycled water they are deploying to meet the needs of Los Angeles and neighboring communities like Malibu and Beverly Hills.

As the climate changes and populations boom, water supplies are under increasing pressure.  The idea of drinking water that was once swirling down your toilet bowl or kitchen sink may make you feel squeamish, but it could hold the key to future water security.  University of Sydney Professor Stuart Khan explains the promise of purified recycled water, and how it can future-proof water supplies in a thirsty nation prone to drought.  “There is the opportunity to start thinking more about a circular economy and how we might reuse the water that we're currently discharging.”  Professor Khan points out that all water on Earth is recycled – the water you're drinking “has quite likely been drunk by dinosaurs in the past” and could be described as “purified dinosaur pee”.   But there's a huge psychological hurdle involved in drinking water that's gone from ‘toilet to tap'. So how do you sell the idea to a skeptical public? You'll hear from Dee Madigan, creative director of advertising agency Campaign Edge and a regular on ABC TV show Gruen.   You'll also get a taste of how the technology works as you go inside Sydney Water's Purified Recycled Water Demo Plant, with plant manager James Harrington.  +++  The Solutionists is podcast from the University of Sydney, produced by Deadset Studios. Better to recycle waste water and reduce ocean outfall or rely on energy-hungry desalination plants? In the lead up to the Victorian state election, a petition on change.org calls for a $60 million upgrade to the Eastern Treatment Plant to remove all contaminants from wastewater currently discharged near Gunnamatta on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne. The Clean Ocean Foundation claims the Weedy Seadragon is directly impacted by the outfall - its numbers are in decline and the species is considered "near threatened." For many decades water has been recycled after it runs through sewage treatment plants in cities large and small in many states and countries.  That recycled water is used for landscaping and industrial cleaning.  Today with decreasing access to imported river water, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has built a test facility to further clean treated waste water to the standards of drinking water.  The plan is to learn how to do this so the water looks great and is completely safe, then return it to the drinking water system.  Essentially by reusing water, they are creating a new water source for their customers.  With decreasing flows in the rivers that deliver water to Southern California, this project is lining up to offset these losses, and can provide data and models for other cities to engage in the similar practices.  Metropolitan Water provides water to 19 million humans through their 26 partner agencies, the cities and counties of Southern California.  Join us for an onsite tour of the plant.  WEBSITESMetropolitan Water District of Southern CaliforniaRegional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center INFORMATION ON PLACES, INFRASTRUCTURE, ACTIONS AND POLICYSouthern CaliforniaColorado RIverSacramento RiverSacramento Source to Sea river expeditionState Water ProjectColorado River AqueductOwens ValleyColorado River CompactBOOKSCadillac DesertScience Be Dammed ARTICLES (just a few, there is a lot of media on water in the Southwest this year)LA Times:  ‘Unrecognizable.' Though we live on a planet comprised primarily of water, the amount of freshwater available for human consumption and industrial purposes continues to dwindle due to pollution and freshwater runoff into the ocean.

Water reuse (the process of recycling wastewater) is taking off in states facing scarcity and the return of drought conditions. Municipal wastewater reuse capacity is expected to dramatically increase over the next 6 years, with over 700 projects presently in planning across the U.S., and the EPA’s recent release of its Draft Water Reuse Action Plan seeking to establish guidelines for the sector. Landscape irrigation is already one of the most common uses of recycled water, but California and Florida have been using it in their agriculture for over 40 years, too. Our guest, Bluefield Research Director Erin Bonney Casey, will map out the current water reuse market in the U.S., as well its potential for future growth, including:· Replacing sole source dependence on potable water resources for irrigation. Will municipal water and sewer rates fund reuse projects? Public vs. Private Decentralized Reuse New applications for reclaimed water in Agriculture and more. Potential impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the reuse market. Water reuse is critical to the future of water. We hope you can join us for our JAIN lunch and learn presentation on this timely subject. Special Guest: Erin Bonney Casey.
